Genesis 11:1-9The Tower of Babel11 Now the whole earth had onelanguage and the same words. 2 And aspeople migrated from the east, theyfound a plain in the land of Shinar andsettled there. 3 And they said to oneanother, Come, let us make bricks, andburn them thoroughly. And they hadbrick for stone, and bitumen formortar. 4 Then they said, Come, let usbuild ourselves a city and a tower withits top in the heavens, and let us make aname for ourselves, lest we be dispersedover the face of the wholeearth. 5 And the LORD CAME down tosee the city and the tower, which thechildren of man had built. 6 Andthe LORD said, Behold, they are onepeople, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of whatthey will do. And nothing that theypropose to do will now be impossiblefor them. 7 Come, let us go down andthere confuse their language, so thatthey may not understand one anothersspeech.8 So the LORD dispersed themfrom there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building thecity. 9 Therefore its name wascalled Babel, because therethe LORD confused the language of allthe earth. And from therethe LORD dispersed them over the faceof all the earth. 9. Acts 2:1-21The Coming of the Holy Spirit2 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were alltogether in one place. 2 And suddenly there camefrom heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they weresitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared tothem and rested on each one of them. 4 And they wereall filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak inother tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devoutmen from every nation under heaven. 6 And at thissound the multitude came together, and they werebewildered, because each one was hearing themspeak in his own language.7 And they were amazedand astonished, saying, Are not all these who arespeaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, eachof us in his own native language? 9 Parthiansand Medes andElamites and residents ofMesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus andAsia,10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts ofLibya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors fromRome, 11 both Jews andproselytes, Cretans andArabianswe hear them telling in our own tonguesthe mighty works of God. 12 And all were amazedand perplexed, saying to one another, What does thismean? 13 But others mocking said, They are filledwith new wine.Peters Sermon at Pentecost14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up hisvoice and addressed them: Men of Judea and all whodwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and giveear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, asyou suppose, since it is only the third hour of theday. 16 But this is what was uttered through theprophet Joel:17 And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;18 even on my male servants and female servantsin those days I will pour out my Spirit, and theyshall prophesy.19 And I will show wonders in the heavens aboveand signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;20 the sun shall be turned to darknessand the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great andmagnificent day.21 And it shall come to pass thateveryone who callsupon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 10. John 14:23-3123 Jesus answered him, If anyone lovesme, he will keep my word, and myFather will love him, and we will cometo him and make our home withhim. 24 Whoever does not love me doesnot keep my words. And the word thatyou hear is not mine but the Fatherswho sent me.25 These things I have spoken to youwhile I am still with you. 26 But theHelper, the Holy Spirit, whom theFather will send in my name, he willteach you all things and bring to yourremembrance all that I have said toyou. 27 Peace I leave with you; mypeace I give to you. Not as the worldgives do I give to you. Let not yourhearts be troubled, neither let them beafraid. 28 You heard me say to you, Iam going away, and I will come toyou. If you loved me, you would haverejoiced, because I am going to theFather, for the Father is greater thanI.29 And now I have told you before ittakes place, so that when it does takeplace you may believe. 30 I will nolonger talk much with you, for the rulerof this world is coming. He has noclaim on me,31 but I do as the Fatherhas commanded me, so that the worldmay know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here. 11. Psalm 143My Soul Thirsts for YouA Psalm of David.143 Hear my prayer, O LORD;give ear to my pleas for mercy! In your faithfulness answer me, inyour righteousness!2 Enter not into judgment with your servant, for no one living is righteous before you.3 For the enemy has pursued my soul;he has crushed my life to the ground;he has made me sit in darkness like thoselong dead.4 Therefore my spirit faints within me;my heart within me is appalled.5 I remember the days of old;I meditate on all that you have done;I ponder the work of your hands.6 I stretch out my hands to you;my soul thirsts for you like a parchedland. Selah7 Answer me quickly, O LORD!My spirit fails!Hide not your face from me,lest I be like those who go down to the pit.8 Let me hear in the morning of your steadfastlove, for in you I trust.Make me know the way I should go,for to you I lift up my soul.9 Deliver me from my enemies, OLORD!I have fled to you for refuge.10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God!Let your good Spirit lead meon level ground!11 For your names sake, O LORD,preserve mylife! In your righteousness bring my soul out oftrouble!12 And in your steadfast love you willcut offmy enemies, and you will destroy all the adversaries ofmy soul, for I am your servant. 12. THE DAY OF PENTECOSTGenesis 11:19Acts 2:121John 14:2331The Holy Spirit Gives PeaceFollowing the flood, Noahs descendants failed to spread out and fill the earth as God hadspoken. Rather, they exalted themselves; with one language and the same words (Gen. 11:1)they spoke proudly and arrogantly. The Lord humbled them by confusing the language of allthe earth, dividing and dispersing the people (Gen. 11:9). That dispersal was reversed onPentecost Day (the fiftieth day of Easter), when God caused the one Gospel of the Lord JesusChrist to be preached in a multitude of languages. At this sound the multitude came together(Acts 2:6), for the preaching of Christ is the primary work of the Holy Spirit, whereby Hegathers people from all nations into one Church. The Holy Spirit teaches and brings to ourremembrance the words of Jesus, which are the words of the Father who sent Him. These wordsbestow forgiveness and peace to those who keep and hold on to them in love for Jesus. Peace Ileave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not yourhearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. (John 14:27). 13. I cried. I am ruined! For I am aman of unclean lips, and I live among a people ofunclean lips, and my eyes have seen theKing, theLORD Almighty.6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a livecoal in his hand, which he had taken with tongsfrom the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth andsaid, See, this has touched your lips; your guiltis taken away and your sin atoned for.Romans 11:33-36Doxology33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdomand[a] knowledge of God!How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!34 Who has known the mind of the Lord?Or who has been his counselor?[b]35 Who has ever given to God,that God should repay them?[c]36 For from him and through him and for him areall things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.John 3:1-17Jesus Teaches Nicodemus3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man namedNicodemus who was a member of the Jewishruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night andsaid, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher whohas come from God. For no one could performthe signsyou are doing if God were not withhim.3 Jesus replied, Very truly I tell you, no one cansee the kingdom of God unless they are bornagain.[a]4 How can someone be born when they are old?Nicodemus asked. Surely they cannot enter asecond time into their mothers womb to beborn!5 Jesus answered, Very truly I tell you, no onecan enter the kingdom of God unless they areborn of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth toflesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7 Youshould not be surprised at my saying,You[c] must be born again. 8 The wind blowswherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but youcannot tell where it comes from or where it isgoing. So it is with everyone born of theSpirit.[d]9 How can this be? Nicodemus asked.10 You are Israels teacher, said Jesus, and doyou not understand these things? 11 Very truly Itell you, we speak of what we know, and wetestify to what we have seen, but still you peopledo not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken toyou of earthly things and you do not believe; howthen will you believe if I speak of heavenlythings?13 No one has ever gone intoheaven except the one who came from heaventhe Son of Man.[e]14 Just as Moses lifted up thesnake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man mustbe lifted up,[f]15 that everyone who believes mayhave eternal life in him.[g]16 For God so loved the world that he gave hisone and only Son, that whoever believes in himshall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For Goddid not send his Son into the world to condemnthe world, but to save the world through him.Psalm 29A psalm of David.1 Ascribe to the LORD, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;worship the LORD in the splendor ofhis[a]holiness.3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters;the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters.4 The voice of the LORD is powerful;the voice of the LORD is majestic.5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars ofLebanon.6 He makes Lebanon leap like a calf,Sirion[b] like a young wild ox.7 The voice of the LORD strikeswith flashes of lightning.8 The voice of the LORD shakes the desert;the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh.9 The voice of the LORD twists the oaks[c]and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, Glory!10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;the LORD is enthroned as King forever.11 The LORD gives strength to his people;the LORD blesses his people with peace.
