This year’s theme is “Crossover”. Asahikawa is an intersection in Hokkaido, both geographically and functionally, so our goal is to exhibit a diverse array of intersections and points of crossing, not just between people, but also including nature, design, space and cuisine. Look forward to the addition of “Fabric and Wood” to our lineup of popular annual installations.

2 「Palapala」　Mikko Halonen ／ MOBEL TOKOThis is the debut of the adult version of the Pa l ape l i ch i l d ren ’ s ready - to -assemb le furniture. This ready-to-assemble chair is just like the Palapeli.

「Koja project」　Staffan Holm, Dan Sunaga ／ WakasaKoja, the Swedish word for “hut” is pronounced in the same way and carries the same meaning in Japanese. This compact folding chair was designed precisely for these kinds of small spaces.

4 「Desk Box」　Makoto Koizumi ／ TaisetsumokkoFrom boxes for “putting in” comes a box you can “get in”. This manufacture specializes in boxes , and the i r search to un lock new potential led to the creation of a box that is both furniture and a space. Experience a new kind of box that is for more than just storage.

5 「New Product Sofa」 Yoshimitsu Asakura ／ Interior Hokusho KoboThis new sofa series is by Yoshimitsu Asakura, the designer known for his hit children’s chair, UPRIGHT.

World-class interior designer Gwenael Nicolas brings a special installation to the Design Center.

This year, we are pleased to welcome Gwenael Nicolas, a French designer who has been involved in space design for Dolce&Gabbana, Moncler, Swarovski and many other global brands. His installation with the theme “Nature Palette” expresses vivid colors of the sky, sunsets and clouds, ears of rice and Japanese white birch, forests and other Asahikawa scenery. The presentation also features Asahikawa furniture crafted from Hokkaido materials and fabrics from Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat. At the venue entrance, visitors will be greeted with tunnels of multicolored fabric hanging from the ceiling.

Kvadrat was established in Denmark in 1968 and has deep roots in Scandinavia’s design tradition. Kvadrat holds the leading position in Europe’s high-quality contemporary textiles market. We supply architects, designers and private consumers across the world with textiles and textile-related products.

Use of Hokkaido materials has exceeded 40%.The Hokkaido Wood Furniture Project continuesmaking powerful progress.

This year marks the sixth year of the Hokkaido Wood Furniture Project, which is dedicated to furniture produced with wood harvested from the forests of Hokkaido. In 2018, over 40% of products made at Asahikawa Furniture used Hokkaido materials, 1.5 times that of the first year of this project. This achievement is the result of united production areas and continued proactive development of products made with Hokkaido broadleaf trees. This year, by improving coordination between government and manufacturing companies, we plan to exhibit an even more diverse array of products made with Hokkaido wood.

Our seventh consecutive WorldSkills Competition.A young Asahikawa craftsperson will enter theinternational competition again this year!

Asahikawa is dedicated to raising our youth, and we are known for our regular entry into the WorldSkills Competition. In April of this year, Tomohiro Yamaguchi, who plans to join Gauzy Calm Works, won the Japan competition and will enter WorldSkills Kazan 2019 in Russia（starting Aug. 22）, the 45th WorldSkills Competition.

Approaching Japanese manufacture beyond the production area:The 8th Japanese Wood Furniture Summit

At the Japanese Wood Furniture Summit, furniture manufacturers from regions across the country gather and exchange valuable information on their craft. With each passing year, more proactive efforts to use domestic wood are introduced, and discussion ensues about the current situation and future hopes.

The Open Factory has been well-received every year for giving everyone the chance to get a close look at the process of manufacture. There is so much to see, from the incredible facilities and equipment to the faces of craftspeople at work. Each location also has prepared cuisine, such as “Genghis Khan” lamb, sweets and cheeses.

This year we have a special 3-Days Passfor the ADW shuttle taxi.

The ADW shuttle taxi is available to take you between the main exhibition at the Asahikawa Design Center to the various event locations and manufacturing sites at your convenience. This year, we are making a 3-Days Pass available for purchase. This may also be used for the shuttle buses between locations.

A restaurant has been opened in the front courtyard of the Design Center.Enjoy the cuisine of Hokkaido under its massive sky.

We first tried food truck CRUISE KITCHEN last year, and it was such a big hit that we are bringing it back to the Asahikawa Design Center again this year. Savor the seasons of Hokkaido in the collaboration with local cuisine selection by Kamikawa Tabemonogatari. We are still planning the menus for drinks, lunch and nighttime.

This year’s ADW Party, a rare chance to make rare connections,will once again be held in the main building.

Interior designers, furniture designers, architects and many other kinds of industry professionals gather at the ADW Party. The party is a rare opportunity to make valuable connections, from conversation to business development, with guests praising it every year, saying things like, “We both live in Tokyo, but it wasn’t until we came here that we finally met!” A menu featuring Hokkaido cuisine is sure to help get the conversation started.

Knoll International and Bauhaus, two exhibition areas for the Oda Collection.

This year, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus with simultaneous exhibitions of chair researcher Noritsugu Oda’s collection. At Knoll International, 20 chairs that inherited the Bauhaus feel and greatly impacted 20th century design will be exhibited. At Bauhaus, valuable Oda Collection materials will be on display.

The Bauhaus and Asahikawa exhibition celebratingBauhaus’s 100th anniversary will be heldat Asahikawa Station.

Bauhaus was a base of trailblazing modern design research and education established in 1919 in Weimar, Germany. Using it as a model, Tokai University established the Tokai University School of Art and Technology in Asahikawa a half-century later to produce a great many talented professionals. Looking back on the history of these two schools has enabled the School of Public Creation to take the form required as it continues in Asahikawa.

The message of “Your Chair”, a place where you belong.

This project for supplying small wooden chairs that began in Higashikawa has reached its 14th year in 2019. Including the Your Chair Club for individuals to participate in, the project has expanded in size, with participating local municipalities including Kembuchi, Aibestu, Higashikagura, Nakagawa, Urugi in Nagano and Katsurao in Fukushima. Come take in all the adorable chairs that Asahikawa Furniture has helped create.

This event was planned independently by Nakagawa and other nearby towns and villages in coordination with ADW. If you feel like a little travel, you will definitely want to come and check it out!

Tour such as woodworking experience, forest walk, campfire, lunch, and you will be satisfied with nature of Hokkaido. Shuttle bus will be running from Asahikawa Design Center this year.
