PARRTS TO THE FURNITURE

Mr. Sou Fujimoto is an Asahikawa-born architect who held a special installation last year, and he passed the baton to another

Asahikawa-related architect, Mr. Tsuyoshi Tane. He had lived in Asahikawa while learning architecture at Hokkaido Tokai Univ.

(Asahikawa campus). PARTS TO THE FURNITURE is the title of the installation by this world’s high profile young architect. The

installation with about 400 chair parts dancing in the air was certainly the symbol of ASAHIKAWA DESIGN WEEK 2016. The

installation received a lot of media exposure and impressed more than 5,000 people visiting Asahikawa Furniture Center, the main

venue of ASAHIKAWA DESIGN WEEK.

Furniture is made by the combination of “parts”. Wood is sawn, selected after close check, and processed to parts without wastes; those parts are combined up to beautiful furniture. When visiting manufacturers and their factories in Asahikawa and seeing such ordinary and proper processes, I was impressed and got the feeling it was an origin of creation: design to production. In other words, furniture is made by combining, jointing, and polishing parts, which is difficult especially in case of using wood. If made without deep understanding of wood, wood furniture will eventually break down of itself due to natural wood warping. I have learned furniture manufacturing is realized by long experience in handicraft, inherited knowledge, and creation enthusiasm. My installation, “PARTS TO THE FURNITURE”, is made from furniture parts provided by manufactures in Asahikawa. Those parts are just one step before furniture. I would like visitors to focus on manufacturers’ enthusiasm shown in the details of the parts: sawing patterns, grains, and joints. In the installation, the parts dance in the air, attract us by casting complex shadows on the floor, and get back to their respective factories after exhibition.I heard the history of Asahikawa furniture began in 1989. Wood was from virgin forests covering the north ground. Wood furniture was one of the important living tools. Asahikawa has woven a long history of manufacturing, preserved forests, grown many manufacturers and craftpeople, collected designers: created great designing environment. I definitely think ASAHIKAWA DESIGN WEEK is a big challenge to make the bright future from the inheritance.

The special talk event of this year was held at Asahikawa Taisetsu Cristal Hall with a capacity of 500 people. Fortunately the hall

was fully crowded, and Mr. Tane explained his three main projects including “Estonian National Museum” which took 10 years to

be completed. Subsequently, design journalist Ms. Noriko Kawakami joined as a moderator and got many interesting stories from

him, such as his thoughts on the installation, furniture industry and city development of Asahikawa, etc.

At Asahikawa Furniture Center, new collections (furniture and wooden crafts) by 49 manufacturers in Asahikawa were gathered; a

special installation by Mr. Tsuyoshi Tane well symbolized handiwork potentiality and the manufacturing process of beautiful things;

some manufacturers were highly evaluated for the renovation of their exhibition booths in connection with new collection launch. In

addition, as part of the second year initiative by Asahikawa Furniture Industry Cooperative called “Koko no ki no kagu Hokkaido

project”, more than 20 manufacturers launched their new collections made of local wood.

There were 27 participating manufacturers, 5 more compared with last year, opening their factories where visitors can see

technology, skills, design, and craftsmanship of Asahikawa. They also held welcoming events under the name of “All kinds of

Asahikawa foods” and served Mongol ian barbecue, homemade soba noodle , sweets , etc . It is a future task to avoid

overlapping of their menus.

For the official party, we chose Taisetsu Crystal Hall, expecting record-high more than 600 visitors. Thanks to the good

weather, the number of visitors turned out to be 1,050. People enjoyed Asahikawa gourmet and conversation with new people

at this communication space. We also increased the scale of ADW BAR having received good reputations last year. Its venue

expanded to a part of the main shopping street of Asahikawa, besides two restaurants: Machibar and MORROW’s. The same

as last year, people got most excited at the first night.

At the Chairs Gallery in Asahikawa, Mr. Takahiro Tsuchida curated this special exhibition of Oda collection: the world largest collection of Scandinavian furniture and household goods treasured by chair expert Mr. Noritsugu Oda. Selected were about 60 items from the 20th century. Dining and living scenes were made by those sofas, tables, and cabinets. About 1,500 visitors enjoyed the display of daily life trimmed by beautiful design.

Architect Sou Fujimoto is now very popular, and his exhibitions held in Tokyo last year also got good reviews. Some items were selected from those exhibition for the Station Gallery located inside Asahikawa station as “FUTURE OF THE FUTURE in ASAHIKAWA” which attracted around 1,000 visitors.

SOU FUJIMOTO EXHIBITION

At AEON HALL, held was a talk show by design journalist Mr. Takahiro Tsuchida and Mr. Akio Aoki from MIRU DESIGN, with a theme of Milano Salone, the world’s largest international furniture trade fair. Many people were attracted by world interior trends and beautiful images the two speakers introduced in a light and easy way. The second part of the talk show was a design talk by three Hokkaido-born speakers: Mr. Yamada from pen; Mr. Yamazaki from JDN; Mr. Tsuchida.

“Japanese Wood Furniture Summit” was the final part of the talk show at AEON HALL, where domestic wood utilization for furniture production was discussed among representatives from five competing furniture manufacturers with a positive attitude toward domestic wood utilization: CONDE HOUSE (Asahikawa); Tendo (Yamagata); WISE WISE (Tokyo); Karimoku Furniture (Aichi); Hida Sangyo (Gifu). This is the first trial receiving a great attention, and was decided to be held again in “Hida Furniture Festival 2016” this September. The total number of visitors for this three-part talk show amounted to 170.

JAPANESE WOOD FURNITURE SUMMIT

We, at AEON HALL, held a panel session by three chief editors from AXIS, ELLE DÉCOR, and WIRED, respectively. Along the main subject of the session, “future viewpoints needed for manufacturing”, they shared their impressions on ASAHIKAWA DESIGN WEEK 2016 and thoughts on how to develop Asahikawa, a city with plenty of skilled people, resources, and infrastructure, through design and manufacturing. The two hours of active discussion just flew so fast that we had to stop it in the middle of Q & A session. What is impressive is it was not only people in the furniture industry but also people in the advertising industry or studying woodworking who joined this discussion. The total number of visitors amounted to around 150.

This event was held at Takumi Kohgei by three panelist who are designers and also the owners of interior shop. They passionately discussed manufacturing of Takumi Kohgei and the future of furniture industry of Asahikawa. Although the number of visitors initially fixed was 50, the event gained much more popularity, and the total number of visitors amounted to 120.

“Kita kara Life Craft Festival” is one of the largest craft exhibitions in Hokkaido which, by introducing around 150 craftsmen, relays craft culture cultivated in Hokkaido from makers to users. The exhibition has been held four times so far at an underground shopping area in Sapporo. This time, it was downsized and held at Asahikawa Furniture Center, which gathered high attention and did great help to increase the number of visitors.

An annual exhibition was held by Asahikawa Craft Design Association composed of craftsmen in woodworking, glass, pottery, and textile dyeing. In connection with opening an international airport terminal in Asahikawa in 2019, the title of the exhibition was “Craft International Courier” containing the expectation of the association: Asahikawa crafts will be delivered more to all over the world. Around 1,400 people visited Design Gallery.
