Mission Statement We, the faith community of St. Bernadette, strive to better know, love and serve God, through the teachings of

His Son Jesus Christ and the graces provided to us through His Holy Spirit and the Sacraments.

Dear Parishioners, After 11 years at St. Bernadette and a little over 4 years at Our Lady of Lourdes my time with you all as Pastor

comes to an end in just 4 days. Priests strive to model the Good Shepherd, yet we all do that not in the same manner. It is a tall order, but we don’t serve without the grace of the Lord. I hope I have been open to that grace. A Pastor is expected to not only be a spiritual leader and care giver and celebrant of the Eucharist but somehow a wizard of financial management, human resource guru, building supervisor and any other administrative skill that might be needed. The seminary does a fairly good job of seeing to the spiritual aspects of priestly life but does a rather poor job of seeing to the temporal aspects of the task. Thankfully over the years I have been able to rely on many talented parishioners in taking care of the managing parts. Priests leave their impact on Parishes for good or ill, but the people also leave their impact on the Priests. I am grateful for your goodness to me in my years as your Pastor and the good imprint you all have left with me. My journey doesn’t end now that I have no administrative duties but continues as I serve people in a different way. I will still be in KC with a home in the Waldo neighborhood. Yes, I will still be found quite often at a baseball game. Also, I intend to do some traveling as time and money permit. At the end of a Navy retirement ceremony the retiree asks permission to go ashore. You all may not wish to grant me that permission but I will now take it.

    God Bless, Fr. Dave

Question of the Week Feast of the Holy Family

    Compassion

Reading I Sirach 3:2–6, 12–14 (duties toward parents) Reading II Colossians 3:12–21 (the practice of virtues; the Christian family) Gospel Luke 2:22–40 (circumcision of Jesus; presentation in the temple) Key Passage: As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. (Colossians 3:12) Adult: How do your family members know that you are a compassionate person? Child: What family member needs your compassion and kindness right now?

Reflection Within the simple family from Nazareth, Simeon recognizes the consolation and salvation he has been awaiting his entire life. We could ponder what it was about the child, these parents, that prompted Simeon to utter, “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace.” Only through the power of the Holy Spirit is Simeon given eyes to perceive the light of the world enfleshed in the newborn Jesus. Christ is present in our daily lives as well, in the people we meet inside and outside of our homes. Through the revelation of the Holy Spirit may we, too, be able to recognize him and serve him.

    Monday, January 4, 2021.

Wishing each and every one of you a very Blessed New Year!

Friday, January 1 Happy New Year New Year’s Day - Office Closed Saturday, January 2 Maintenance Fund Collection Sunday, January 3 Maintenance Fund Collection

Question of the Week Mary, Mother of God

    Blessed by God

Reading I Numbers 6:22–27 (the priestly blessing) Reading II Galatians 4:4–7 (free sons of God in Christ) Gospel Luke 2:16–21 (the shepherds’ visit)

Key Passage: So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. (Galatians 4:7) Adult: Which of God’s blessings are you most thankful for right now? Child: What does it mean to you to be a child of God?

Reflection We are meant to live our Catholic faith in community and to live and share our knowledge and experiences with others Our primary experience of that commu-nity is at Sunday Mass in our parishes. One of the final words we hear at Mass is “go”—that is, take what we have encountered and bring it beyond the doors of the church. We are called to be eager and transformed like the shepherds who encountered Jesus in the manger. Like them, let us not contain what we hear and see but rather “go forth” glorifying God and sharing him with others.

CARES GRANT EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE A few of months ago, in the Parish Connect sessions, pastors shared that housing was the #1 challenge facing parishioners. As a result of those discussions, Catholic Charities KCSJ began searching for the funds to address this need. The Missouri Non-Profit Relief and Recovery Program became available at the perfect time. We received an award from the State of Missouri to provide housing and utility assistance to families in our diocese who are struggling to stay in their homes and keep their lights on. Our goal was to reach a wide geographic area throughout our 27 counties. To that end, many of our parishes were willing to host these distributions on very short notice. Thanks to your help we were able to distribute $185K in direct assistance to community members and parishes. It is our plan to continue identifying available funds for this continual need. For information about our programs and services please contact Nancy Butters, Parish Outreach Manager at 816-659-8266 or [email protected].

    MARK’S GOSPEL AND THE CHALLENGE OF DISCIPLESHIPWednesday Evenings – January 6, 13, 20 and 27, 2021 ~ 7-9 PM

Repeated on Thursday Mornings – January 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2021 ~ 10 AM to Noon Lectionary Year B focuses on the Gospel of Mark, the first gospel to be written somewhere between 67-73 CE. Mark is the first evangelist to give Jesus a human face along with a mission to proclaim the realm of God. Suffering, misunderstanding, rejectionand persecution are an inherent part of that mission for Mark’s Jesus, for his followers, and for the community that forms itself once Jesus is no longer with them. Beginning with an overview of the Christian approach to Scripture and the biblical tools used to unpack a gospel, these four two-hour sessions examine the mind and heart of Mark and the community that produced the gospel. We will carefully examine the gospel, focusing on its key themes and message for the community that produced it. The situation, needs and concerns of Mark’s community will be highlighted through an examination of specific gospel passages. Mark’s image of Jesus as God’s suffering servant continually challenges those who claim to be disciples. Each generation of disciples has to discern how to carry out Jesus’ mission and ministry in light of Mark’s community focus on Jesus as God’s suffering servant and on disciples’ need to take up their cross and follow him. Come with a bible and invite a friend along to explore Mark’s gospel together and to be better prepared to enter more deeply into this lectionary year. All Christian churches and other faith traditions are most welcomed. The sessions will be conducted via Zoom and facilitated by Bia io Mazza Pastoral Associate at St. Sabina Catholic Church in Belton MO. For more information or to register please e-mail Biagio at bia [email protected]. Once registered you will be sent a Zoom link to the sessions. Please specify if you prefer the Wednesday evenin sessions or the Thursday mornin sessions. bia [email protected]
