Pastor’s Message XXIX Sunday in Ordinary Time
Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?" Knowing their malice, Jesus said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax."(Matthew 22:17-19)
Our allegiance to country – be it in the United States or other nation – is important, but never more important than our allegiance to God. Our primary identity is not as citizens of a particular country, but as children of God. In the Gospel, Jesus’ opponents try to entrap him on the question of taxation. Jesus’ response is, repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. Caesar’s image and inscription are on the Roman coin. Thus, they belong to Caesar. Jesus does not ask, but the next question is implied: Where do we find God’s image and inscription? The answer is, in us, his children. God created us in his image and inscribed his law into our hearts. No matter what their allegiance to Rome, Jesus’ message to his opponents is that they belong to God. Caesar may claim the coins to be his own, but he cannot claim people; they are claimed by God. (excerpts from Daily HOMILIES for Sunday and Weekday Masses, Lansing, MI 48906) If we truly belong to God, are we willing to give him back our very selves, the gifts he has entrusted to us for a responsible stewardship? Are we putting him first before anyone or anything else? Our dynamic participation in the Eucharist unites us in offering ourselves back to God. Only in Him do we find true freedom and peace. For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with much conviction.(1Thess 1:5)
Mensaje del pastor
XXIX Domingo
del tiempo ordinario
Díganos, entonces, cuál es su opinión: ¿Es lícito pagar
el impuesto del censo al César o no?Conociendo su
malicia, Jesús dijo: "¿Por qué me probáis, hipócritas?
Enséñame la moneda que paga el impuesto del cen-
so" (Mateo 22: 17-19).
mos verdadera libertad y paz.
Porque nuestro evangelio no llegó a ustedes solo
en palabras, sino también en poder y en el Espíritu
Santo y con mucha convicción (1Tes 1: 5).

St. Luke the Evangelist October 18 is the feast day of St. Luke. Everyone knows that he was one of the four gospel writers, but he was also a
doctor, born in Antioch Syria. Some say that he was a Gentile, others think that he was Greek. In addition to the gospel, he also wrote the Acts of the Apostles,
recording facts. Tradition says that he lived a long life. St. Luke was also a friend and disciple of St. Paul, accompanying him on many missions. He followed St. Paul until St.
Paul was martyred. St. Luke’s take on Jesus is seen in the six miracles and eighteen parables not found in the other gospels. He champi-ons the poor and social justice. His sto-ry of the poor Lazarus and the rich man who ignored Lazarus is telling. He uses the phrase “Blessed are the poor” and wanted God’s kingdom and mercy for
everyone. Mary’s Magnificat is noted in Luke’s gos-
pel where Mary says: that God "has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty" (Luke 1:52-53). St. Luke has a special connection with the women in Jesus' life, especially
Mary. His gospel tells the story of the Annunciation, Mary's visit
to Elizabeth including the Magnificat, the Presentation and the story of Je-
sus' disappearance in Jerusalem. We can thank Luke for the scriptural parts of
the Hail Mary: "Hail Mary full of grace" spoken at the Annunciation and "Blessed are you and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus" spoken by her cousin Eliza-
beth. He respected women and saw hope for all.
St. Luke stresses forgiveness and God's mercy to sinners. He tells the story of the Prodigal Son welcomed back by the
overjoyed father. From St. Luke we hear the story of the forgiv-
en woman disrupting the feast by wash-ing Jesus' feet with her tears. Through-out St. Luke's gospel, Jesus takes the side of the sinner who wants to return
to God's mercy. He is often depicted in pictures with an ox or calf because these are symbols of sacrifice, alluding to the sacrifice of Jesus for everyone. Although some say that he painted im-ages of Mary, this has never been prov-en. Yet he is still considered a patron of painters of pictures, as well as the pa-tron saint of physicians and surgeons. The reports of Luke's life after Paul's death are conflicting. Some early writ-ers claim he was martyred, others say he lived a long life. Some say he preached in Greece, others in Gaul. The earliest tradition we have says that he died at 84. He was a complicated, but blessed soul handpicked by Jesus to tell generations everything we need to know about our religious heritage..
Life Long Faith Formation Life Long Faith Formation places particular em-phasis on spiritual, moral, intellectual, social and cultural needs of our community. Life Long Faith Formation ministry seeks to form our children, youth and adults to be true disciples of Jesus Christ, who through active participation in our faith community, learn to value all people as children of God and create a more loving and just
society.
