On behalf of the University Interscholastic League, I welcome you to the UIL Texas High School State Championships! The League has a long and exciting history of educational and athletic excellence through competition, and now these participants are adding to that tradition. I wish to thank the administrators and
sponsors who have supported these devoted young people. Of the millions of Texas students, these participants have risen to the top through hard work and perseverance. Congratulations on your success and accomplishments in extracurricular activities in Texas. Best wishes for the future!

The One-Act Play Honor Crew was initiated in 1977 when the State Office invited Austin ISD theatre arts students to serve on the State Meet One-Act Play Contest production staff. In 1982, this highly successful program was made available to students from all UIL member high schools. Students selected as Honor Members of the State Meet One-Act Play staff will be involved in a learning experience otherwise available only to State Meet participants.

54 One-Act Play State Championships
oap & theatrical design judging panels
Judges for this contest are members of the Texas Theatre Adjudicators’ Organization (TTAO) which is dedicated to the development of quality theatre education in Texas schools in cooperation with UIL and each community’s school administrators, theatre directors, students and parents. These judges were selected by the TTAO and assigned by the State Theatre Director.
CONFERENCE 1A
Travis Springfield ma-jored in theatre at Texas State University, graduat-ing with a BFA in Acting. Travis taught theatre for nine years with Bishop ISD, Humble ISD, and Klein ISD. During his teaching career, he received numer-ous awards for directing, including a UIL One-Act Play State Championship and two additional UIL One-Act State appearances. He is current-ly employed as Dean of Students at Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA). Travis has served on the State UIL Advi-sory Committee as well as the Past-Chair of the One-Act Play Adjudicators Organization. He cur-rently serves on the Board of Directors for the Texas Educational Theatre Association as Secre-tary. He is a sought-after one-act play judge and clinician working with 70-80 high school produc-tions annually.
Omar Leos’ career in the-ater education spans over 18 years in San Antonio public schools. For the last seven years, he has taught at Thomas Edison High School where his students made an appearance at the State Meet in 2011. His one-act plays have advanced to the district, area and regional levels. He believes strongly in the importance of educational theater and the One-Act Play Contest to build the next generation of fine arts advocates. Omar also is an active the-ater director in San Antonio. Omar holds a BA in Theater and English from The University of the Incarnate Word and an M.Ed. in Educational Ad-ministration from Lamar University. For four years he was the Coordinator for Visual and Theater Arts for San Antonio ISD and is currently the Fine Arts Director for Harlandale ISD in San Antonio.
Allana Patterson--2018 marks the 20th year that Allana has been adjudicat-ing the UIL One-Act Play and her first year to judge State Meet. Allana grew up in Snyder under legendary theatre director Jerry Wor-sham. She first appeared at the State Meet in 1971 as a junior in high school and won the Samuel French award in 1972. 2018 STUDENT ACTIVITIES CONFERENCESfor High School students in Academic, Speech/Debate and One-Act Play
held during the fall semester on college campuses
★ They’re free! No pre-registration needed!
★ The Conferences begin at 9 a.m. and end by 1:30 p.m. without a lunch break. This allows us greater flexibility in scheduling without sacrificing program quality, and allows schools to return home earlier. Bring along snacks for students who need a sugar or carbo boost around noon.
★ Conferences are scheduled as best as possible to minimize conflicts with national testing dates, band contests and state conventions and to maximize participation by the finest students and teachers in Texas. Pre-registration is not required and there is no fee for attendance.
★ Instructional Sessions are designed for beginning students, advanced students and academic coordinators and coaches. Lectures and demonstrations will be scheduled for all UIL academic contests, including One-Act Play.
★ Conferences feature lectures and presentations by UIL contest directors, college professors and high school teachers. Sessions will include discussions on contest preparation, demonstrations, performances and contest administration. Students may choose from novice and advanced sessions in some academic areas, as well as small-group sessions in specific UIL activities.
★ Bring students! Most sessions are intended to help students begin preparing for high school spring contests. Mark your calendar and plan to attend one or more of these free conferences.
★ Tentative programs for each site will be posted on the UIL web site, and final programs will be available at each site.
