Colonel H@udlton ) Miss J.Ainsworth l Mr.& Mrs.Hotimsk:y Mr.Martin, Camp Director s.Cesat'(ta,

paid a visit to the Hospital

A Jmsh Commission with Dr.Nab.on visited tho Hospital step by step. They spoke to the patients and when they left the Hospi ta.l they seemed very pleased.

Onoe and twioe a week, the Medioal Executive Officer is in Le'UO& Hospital. Dr.To&asald. sees the most interest.in& cases and p.ves her advice. By her arr&n,iement, a patient of the Hospital went to Bari's University for Stomach X-Ray.

If the rurmi~ of the Hospital pt'OCeeds now much more smoothly, it is because the Camp Dire~ helps us in ervery wq.

Maintenanoo, supplies and administrative pro lems are dealt with promptly and satisfaotori• by the Camp Director.

9• HOSPITAL ( continued)

A Garrison E~nee:r from Brindisi visited the Hospital on 14-. 1 .46 to view the Sa.ni tary arra.n,eements in connection with the new lavatories and pipin,; we have asked for, -we are hopin& that be:f"ore the surmner is on us, o,n- Sanitation will be more adequate and in 4ood order.

We have now in tm Hospital and work:in&, a ,;enerator, - this supplies the Hospital, with the exoeption of the Ma tern:i. ty Department, with li&h,t, the Maternity Dept. is supplied with emercenoy li&htini from the X-Re;y 1enerator; this now pnerat.or is now enolosed in a shed at the rear of the Hospital. On the 30th Dec.1945, plans for the re-arran,:eJDt,nt of the Maternity De~nt ""'re submitted to the oamp Director, same -were approved and in just over. a. week a pax-ty of workmen arrived in the Hospi. tal to c me -nrk in the Maternity Dept. Tho Maia.zi.ne where patient's clothes used to 'be stored, has been oonverted into a. Nur:-sery and we now have aocomoda.tion far 20 babies, this enables us to put more beds into the "l3'in& in" wards, now that babies oots will not be neoessary there, the deli very room has been rea:rran&ed am. painted and we feel w are more able now to cope with the lar&or number of expectant mothers at present rep.stered on our books.

The patients clothes are now stored in a converted store-roan in the Dootor•s house. The Re:t'riierator f'ran the Lecce Ambulance ha.s been put in the lar,;e lower hall of the Hospital, this also is enclosed in a. she

10. NURSING SERVICES: Out' numberbof' sur&;ioal oases he.vo decreased a little dut"in& this past month due to no operations ein& perf'ormed durin& Christma.ss, oven so with fewer operations I was unablo to allow the nurses the Christmass holid~s ott aB we still had siok patients to look after.

Mrs.Pasqua our new surll, cal nurse, haB been in the operatini room durillJit operations am. will I think soon be able to aot as Theat.l.-e nurse, thus relievi~ Miss Ciampa.tLia a little.

Miss Zoppola has taken Miss Di Giulio's plaoo on the wards.

The hi&hli&ht of Christinass in Materni. ty Department, was tho arriwal of twins on Christma.ss a.q. They wero tho fit-st twins to be born in I.euoa. Hosp.ital since UNRRA took over. These boys were the pat"ents first chi.lemon and arrived at 2am. & 2.50am, the first vertex and the second a footlini presentation; all did very well and were dischar1ed from Hispital on the 12th dq.

10. NURSING SERVICES. ( oontinuod)

Another oase which I think is worth mentionin&, is the caso ot aoute appendix which a.tTi ved on 29 .12.4-5 from another camp. All arran, ements for the show:i.!18; of the fillll had been made, the screen, projector etc. had been put into position, the show was about to start, when the case at acute appendix was bro\l&ht in. Dr.T.rankowsky, our sur&e<>n, saw the patient and deoided that an immediate operation was necessary. The Theatre Nurses prepared tho operatin& room and the patient was p.ven the usual preoperative treatment in tlie WBl"d.. It was Mcessary that he should wait a li ttlo until the Doctors and nurses were ready to coom, noo the operation, so he watched. the film, after about 15 minutes he walked to the operati.!18; room where he had his troublesomi, appendix removed under local anaesthesia (Novocain) and af'tern.rds walked baak to the ward in which the film was bein& shown and sat on the bed until it finished. He did not suffer any ill effects and was dischar&ed fit from the Hospital e:f ter 8 days.

11. GENERAL SANITATION: Sani t&tion problems have been mentioned under para,;t"aph 9,HOSPI'T.AL. We are hopin& that the new lavatories w.ill soon be forthoom:l.n&.

12. FOOD & KITCHENS: We h&ve very few complaints now about the food and. feel that tru, qua].i ty and quantity p.ven to the patients an3. staf':f' is &ood.

1}. DISINFESTATION: The disi.nf'estation at mattresses, 'blankets, pillows etc. is carried out in the camp as 'before. We oontinue to boil linen and put beddin& in the sunshino ani frosh air. The clothes are al'W83's washed in this order:-

1. Opera tin& room and lia.tern:i ty. 2. General wards. }. Isolation.

1li-. MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND EQUIB!EN.ri The arrival of two new small autoclaves brou, cht by Col.Hamilton when he visited us just 'before Christma.ss, has helped considerab4', they work ,vell and officientl;y. Dr.Ubertalli bas received from Major Brakeley sane X-Ray developer and fixer.

Moro material for baby clothes has arridd from Romo. It consists of': ..

11t,. MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND EQUIR4EN.r: (continued)

These 1a:rments I cut out in the Hospital and then take them to the camp far so'Wi.n&• The sewin& roo in the camp has helped considerabq in the makinc of these 1arm,nts.

15. GENERAL COMMENTS: We have had rather more visitors to the Hospital this month. Mias Ainswarth from Rom,, am. Mr.& Mrs.H timsky fr Bari visited us over the Chris'bu.ss. A Jewish Comi:oittee consistina of a Dr.Nahon, Mr.Garf'U?lkol and Dr.Ama.shikowsli visited tho Hospital on the 30th Deo.19l,.5. They ffltN very interested in everythina that they saw am. talked freely with the patients.

Ha.Yin& now been responsible for the nursina: side of the Hospital for throe nths, I feel I must sq that lI\Y' work has been made much easier by the assistance &i,ven to the Hospital by the Camp Director, cooperation between the C~ and the Hospital is 1ood,- administration, maintenarJOe and supply problems are fewer with such cooperation.
