Field Visit to Birbhum leads to extension of Wash 4 Global Grant with Rotary Foundation approval for sustainability

Place: Birbhum Date: 27 October 2021

As part of this project we provided 121 toilets and 13 bore-wells, followed by 25 additional toilets with the surplus monies from this Global Grant project. These are now complete and we have visited the site and photographs taken.

During our project field visit and mind-set change training on 26th and 27th October 2021in Birbhum villages, , the community identified a need for three extra toilets and Nitayanagar village. This adjoining village had been made open defecation free a couple of years ago by an earlier Global Grant. However, new families have come in and if we can build these 3 toilets, the village will benefit.

The existing water source will be adequate to support three toilets. The proposed three toilets would be at the houses of Dasarath Soren, Clubendi Konra and Sanaka Konra; all of these families belong to the Adibashi (Tribal) group in Nityanagar village.

The total cost would be INR 17,500 x 3 = INR 52,500.00, as per the Global Grant project GG 1874131 rates. Rotary Foundation have approved our appeal as follows.

PP Saumen Ray wishes to thank our project team members and international Rotarians for this success.

THE ROTARACT CLUB OF GEORGE COLLEGE - “ HATHE KHORI 2.0”

THE INTERACT CLUB OF SILVER POINT SCHOOL - “ BOOK DISTRIBUTION DRIVE”

ROTARACT CLUB OF CALCUTTA –“DUGGA SOHAY “Description: The biggest Bengali festival Durga Puja ended with few high and low notes this year amid the world wide pandemic. But Rotaract Club of Calcutta, RID 3291 brought smiles to our lives with its innovative cultural celebration “Dugga Sohay”, jointly with Rotaract Club of Kolkata Krishti on 7th November 2021 . More than 75 Rotaractors from 25 and more clubs registered and came that day to make this event even more great. The team arranged a grand get-together wrapped with few amazing events. Few of them were much enjoyed by all the members participated, such as 'break the pot', 'word lipsing', 'lit the candles', 'reverse phrase', 'blow the conch' and many more. Apart from all these fun games there was a well organised cultural program. Classical dance and music performed by the very talented club members. This event not only brought a fresh air to us but also rightly kept with the festive- vibe intact. All the props and decorative designs were a result of relentless efforts of the club members. The money collected will be spent for upcoming community service based projects and other donation drives.

In collaboration with the Rotary Club Of Calcutta Duttapukur, the Interactors of Silver Point School distributed 200 books ( story books, GK, grammar books) among the students ( between 6 to 12 years) of the locality enabling them to pursue their academics. A set of 3 books was given to each student. The smile on the faces said it all.

LESS IS MORE: ADDING UP MAY BE COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE

Through the Lens of PP Haladhar Dey

Says Rtn Bodhibrata Das

Our minds always think linearly. Whenever we encounter an issue, we plan to bring more to the table, adding up more strength, scaling up resources, and so on. Hold your breath, the paradox I will talk about will unsettle the age-old belief and jostle you to think on a new trajectory.

Let me brief you about an incident in Seoul, South Korea - when the city was suffering snarl of traffic and the authorities decided to demolish the bridge, which was passing through the center of the city and everybody got the jolt due to the contrarian move. Demolition of the busy bridge brought the much-needed panacea to the traffic issue and it surprised everyone around. A similar incident happened in New York, Germany - those facts lend more credence to the thought “Less is more”.

German mathematician Dietrich Braess postulated this Paradox in 1968. He observed that adding one or more roads to a road network can slow down traffic flow through it. This is Braess Paradox. This can be applicable in a few other areas as well.

Hence, before you choose to improve upon something, ask yourself, will that bring a positive result or it will go southward.

We should thank Mr. Braess for waving the red flag! Braess's paradox can also be found in biological systems, electrical engineering, sports strategy, and computer science.

In sports parlance, there is something called the Ewing paradox which is strangely analogous to Braess's paradox. It describes how teams mysteriously play better when their star player is not on the court or field.

Now, the question for you, do you think - the premise of Braess's paradox is contextual to Politics- where you are taking off the face of the political party from the election campaign. Will it work or won't it?
