RI President 2014-15
Dear Friends in Rotary
Rotary is an organization that has something for everyone. All
over the world, in cities and towns, for well over a century,
Rotarians have come together to serve. And in the years since
Rotary was founded, countless Rotarians and others have
discovered the joys of Rotary service, through Rotaract, Interact,
Rotary Community Corps, Youth Exchange, and many other
programs.
All of us are part of the family of Rotary. And we have all gained
so much from our Rotary service. We've made friends, helped
our communities, and made the world a better, safer, and healthier
place. We've become part of a truly international network of
volunteers, and we've learned how much we can achieve when
we put our differences aside and work together.
Many of the ideas and values that we cherish in Rotary are not
unique to Rotary. Perhaps the reason Rotary resonates so deeply
with me is that I find many traditional Chinese values reflected in
Rotary: values of service and responsibility, of respect for family
and for others.
It is not surprising, then, that the ideas of Confucius so often
guide me in my Rotary service. To me, Confucius was the original
Rotarian. More than two thousand years before Paul Harris was
born, he said: To put the world in order, we must first put the
nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must put the family
in order; to put the family in order, we must first set our hearts
right.
In Rotary, we set our hearts right by putting Service Above Self.
And we recognize that in order to be ambitious in our service,
we must first care for our own organization and expand our family
of Rotary. In 2014-15, I will ask all of you to Light Up Rotary -
by sharing our service, Strengthening our clubs, and letting our
light shine in our communities.

ROTARY CLUB OF DULIAJAN
29th Installation Ceremony
In this Rotary year, we will Light Up Rotary by reaching our goal
of 1.3 million Rotarians, bringing in new members while working
to keep the members we have. To do this, we'll need to approach
membership in new ways, and try new ideas. Hold a Rotary Day
to give your community a chance to learn more about Rotary.
Remember that Rotary is a family and is for the family: Encourage
your spouse and other family members to consider joining, and
reach out to Youth Exchange and Foundation alumni. Focus on
your own club, and look realistically at why members stay, and
why they leave. What can you do to make being a Rotarian an
appealing and attractive opportunity for busy professionals and
those with young families?
We will also Light Up Rotary - and make history - by eradicating
polio. Polio eradication within the next few years is absolutely
realistic - if we keep up our momentum. So tell your friends,
associates, and elected officials how critical it is that we End
Polio Now. Donate to the Polio Plus Fund and encourage others
to do so as well. By meeting the newest challenge issued by the
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we can make our money work
three times as hard. Be an active part of the greatest public-
private health partnership in the history of the world, and share in
the pride when the job is finished.
In 2014-15, as we strengthen our clubs and Light Up Rotary in
more than 34,000 communities, our commitment and our service
will light up the world.

Installation ceremony in Rotary Clubs all over the world
is perhaps the most important event of the year, signalling
as it does the end of one term and beginning of a new
one. It is a happy occasion for all concerned to be able to
applaud the out-going leader and greet the in-coming
President and his team. The occasion provides a perfect
opportunity to focus on the myriad achievements of the
year that was and, at the same time, enumerate the
priorities of the year ahead. I believe this is a twilight
zone for Rotary pregnant with new hopes and aspirations.
This is a moment to cherish.
Rotary Club of Duliajan is one of the active Clubs of RI
District 3240 with several feathers on its cap. It has a
proven track record. I commend the Club's unwavering
support and commitment to Rotary movement.
On this happy occasion, I send my best wishes to all
Members of the Rotary Club of Duliajan. I am absolutely
sure that the Club will continue to achieve newer
pinnacles of glory during the new Rotary Year under the
new Leader Rtn Partha Protim Hazarika.

Dear Rtn Partha ,
I am happy to learn that ROTARY CLUB OF DULIAJAN
is celebrating its Installation Ceremony on 27th June
and publishing a special issue of PHOENIX on this
occasion. The various community service works being
carried out by your esteemed club deserve applause from
all and sundry.
"Each of us will one day be judged by our standards of
life - not by our standard of living; by our measure of
giving - not by our measure of wealth; by our simple
goodness - not by our seeming greatness" said William
Arthur ward, a famous writer from USA. The installation
function of a rotary club not only celebrates the
achievement of the previous year but also reinforces the
goals that have to be met during 2014-15. The act of
service comes out of love for humanity and that is what
we have to imbibe in the minds of Rotarians.
A small tip on leadership - A leader has to be firm yet
flexible. Flexible yes but no compromise with the values
we cherish, principles we live by, ideals of the
organization we have embraced. Integrity, honesty,
dignity, sincerity are not redefined. Rotary club is an
association of individuals coming from different walks
of life having different mind set up, different
temperaments, different reasonings. What we learn by
association with these members is their perspective as

to how they look to Rotary and to the world. By
association, we learn tolerance and mutual respect. We
must afford to understand each other. The association can
remain an association only when we develop that feeling
of togetherness, and then and then only we can provide
meaningful service to the community and to our rotary
organization.
I am reminded of the words of T.S.Eliot who said "Only
those who risk going far will ever know how far they can
go". I am sure Rotary Club of Duliajan will go far beyond
the confines of their club and LIGHT UP ROTARY during
Rotary Year 2014-15 under your strong leadership and
shared vision.

Rotary, a word of few letters which opens the door for an entire life and great achievements.
People may bond together with different relations, for business, for education or for many otherpurposes, but it is a rarity to find people gathered for all those purposes which is what ROTARYdoes. The same has become applicable for our members who come from different backgroundsand classifications, but are united for a single cause.
We serve, bond, socialize, learn, develop ourselves and develop others, meet new people, gainknowledge and experiences, open up to the world and ultimately become friends for life.
RI President Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang wasinspired by the teachings of Chinese philosopher Confucius who said: "It is better to light a singlecandle, than to sit and curse the darkness."
Gary C.K. Huang -"The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. Ilight one, you light one, 1.2 million Rotarians light one. Together, we light up the world,"
With this goal in mind, we need to assume leadership for building strong clubs. The same is applicablefor Rtr Partha Pratim Hazarika who is taking up the mantle of leadership this year. Best wishes tohim for the year ahead.
Bowing to the Rotary year 2013-14 that has passed off with brilliant assuredness. I welcome theyear 2014-15 which in all probability will be a forerunner of goodwill, service and companionship.
Our ex-president Rtn. Dr. Amal Deka's incessant hard work and dedication has taken the club togreat heights.
My thanks to President Partha for bestowing upon me the Editor's responsibility.

ROTARY CLUB OF DULIAJAN
29th Installation Ceremony
RTN. DR. AMAL KR. DEKA
President 2013-14
Respected Chief Guest, dignitaries, AG, Zone 12, distinguished guests, fellow
Rotarians, Annes, members of the Inner wheel Club, members of interact clubs,
Rotarylets, members of the Press, ladies and gentlemen.
I welcome you all to this 29th Installation ceremony of Rotary Club of Duliajan.
A short while from now we are going to hand over charge to the incoming committee.
I do not know how far we have been able to live up to the expectations of our fellow
Rotarians. Last year on the day of installation, I expressed my desire to start some new
projects to focus our attention to the backward villages where they need us most.
All our activities will be reflected in the secretary's report however I would like to
mention some of them.
Most of our activities were influenced by the Rotary motto for 2013-14,
'Engage Rotary Change Lives.'
We started a permanent project of adopting a remote backward village Chapatoli
Bangali Gaon, which is about 25 Km away from Duliajan. The project was inaugurated
by DG Arijit Kr. Endow. We wanted to pay our attention to Rotary's six areas of focus in
that village in a phased manner. To start with we did need assessment and a base line
socio economic study. We have addressed some basic needs in that village and hope;
the new committee will continue their activities there so that the village could be
transformed into a model village and made a benchmark within a reasonable time, so that
it could be applied in case of other villages as well. On the whole, apart from continuation
of other permanent projects of our club, we paid more attention to the have-nots.
During our tenure we have taken few other projects with Rotary 3240 Foundation
and TRF grants namely 'Sahanubhuti' and 'Parivartan'. We also started another project

called 'Swampurna swaystha' with financial grant from Oil India Limited. Under this
project, for the first time in the history of Rotary Club of Duliajan we have organized a
Cataract detection camp followed by free cataract operations.
Ladies and gentlemen, whatever we have done so far may not be enough, but even if
we were able to bring about some change to the lives of few and bring some happiness to
them then that is our greatest reward.
I take this opportunity to thank all the board members, committee chairpersons
and Rotarians of RC Duliajan. As usual some Rotarians helped me out of the way but I
will not mention their names. I will remain grateful to them. I thank IPP Dr. J. K. Goswami
for his help and for organizing successfully 'Sampreeti', the seminar on Peace and
Conflict Resolution. I thank all the Annes, the Inner Wheel Club and Interact Club
members for their cooperation and help. I thank our AG of Zone 12, Sri Aditya Goswami
for his guidance in all our activities. I will fail in my duties if I do not thank the members
of Duliajan Press Club and Sanmilita Sangbadik Mancha for their coverage of all our
activities. We are grateful to Oil India Limited without whose support Rotary Club of
Duliajan wouid not have been able to attain its present state.
I offer my best wishes to the incoming Committee under the stewardship of
Partha Pratim Hazarika, who will take over from us after a short while from now.
Ladies and gentlemen, I once again welcome you all.
Long live Rotary Club of Duliajan.

Honorable Chief Guest, Padmashree PDG Rtn. Manas Choudhury, Asstt. Governor
Rtn. NB Choudhury, Guest of honour Shri Varunoday Sharma, RCE,OIL, Installation
Officer, PDG Rtn. Kalpana Khound, my fellow Rotarians, Annes, Inner Wheel members,
Interact members, Invited guests, Members of the Media - a warm good evening to you all.
This is indeed a very special evening for me and my team. In this august moment
I do feel myself most fortunate enough to have this magnificent opportunity to serve
my very own Club from front and also the community at large with my utmost capacity.
I do offer my sincere thanks and gratitude from the bottom of my heart to all my Rotarian
colleagues of our Club for showing conviction on my ability and gifting me with this
lovely opportunity to be the leader of the team that has constantly been chasing a dream
to serve the have-nots and also keeping an indomitable desire of bringing positive changes
and raise hope into the society.
I did start my personal journey as a Rotarian in the last millennium. One shiny
summer Monday of June 1997, our Charter member Rtn Golap Sharma, whom we lovingly
call "Bhisma Pitamaha", one of the strong pillars of our Club as well, took albeit a young,
tall and timid bachelor boy having a sincere attitude to serve the community, to the
Rotary Club of Duliajan, pursuing its temporary office at AGCL Guest house in those
early days and inducted him into the amazing and incredible family of Rotary. Since that
very day, long seventeen eventful years have so far been rolled down and during this
course of time Rotary has not only played a pivotal role in shaping and nourishing his
personality, but also offered him such ample of opportunities to boost up his inner vigor
and self-confidence that the boy is now going to shoulder the responsibility as the
President of the Club. Thanks a lot Rotary, for all your incomparable endowment !

Address
ROTARY CLUB OF DULIAJAN
29th Installation Ceremony
I shall truly remain indebted to you and dotingly cherish your belongingness till I walk in
this earth.
In the yesteryears, I had the privilege to serve the Club in various capacities under
the stewardship of some very accomplished leaders whose selfless and relentless affords
have brought enviable achievements to the Club. Its indeed owing to those visionary
leaders, we are going to inherit a Club that can justifiably afford to serve the
underprivileged populace of our society.
In many ways, this Rotary year 2014-15 is very exceptional for all of us Rotarians
from District 3240; as this year our District is celebrating twenty five years of its selfless
service towards community, a long and persistent journey packed with saga of triumph
and accomplishment. I am really privileged to congratulate you all for such wonderful
attainment.
An ancient Chinese scholar, Confucius, said "It is better to light up a single candle
than to sit and curse the darkness". With relevance to this perpetual philosophy, Rotary
International President Rtn. C K Huang ably said, "Rotarians have always believed this to
be true. When we are confronted by the world's problems, we are not paralyzed by despair,
we are called to action". The momentous theme for this new Rotary year "Light up Rotary"
best reflects the action what we Rotarians ought to do in order to carry forward the
Rotary Motto of "Service above self" in true spirit of the words. Putting service above
oneself is most valuable, and has both social and personal importance. This importance
is installed within every one of us from the very early age: the sharing attitudes of children
with their friends, participating in random acts of kindness are couple of examples. These
initial principles seem to become lost, however, as we age. Once learned, even with
prideful acknowledgement, but as we get older, because of our self-interest, these eternal
values of service above self turns into intentional, purposeful choices that we make.
In current state of affairs, the world around us is in desperate need of those willing to
serve others. There are uncountable students around us that need education, full of
underprivileged that need helping hands to serve food, provide shelter, and find work.
I say, we every Rotarian with our humble affords can be a great source of help and hope
to those have-nots. But most importantly, we should not think that to serve humanity is
a sacrifice on our part. Right from our birth to death, we all go on receiving things from
society. We are indebted to the society for what we receive from it and it is our moral
duty to repay the debt back. But the debt is so heavy that it can never be fully paid up.
We can only repay a tiny portion of what we have taken from it through our selfless
service. Service to the society is not only the act of kindness but it is a social obligation,
a sacred duty and the most requisite way of making payments against our debts.

Opportunities for community service to do well to others are ample. It needs only realization
of our duty and goodwill to perform it and our acts of kindness may put sunshine into a
dark life. The great saying of Mother Teresa well goes in this relevant- "At the end of life
we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have
made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by "I was hungry, and yougave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you tookme in."
At the end of the day, the big luxurious car we drive, those imported brand ofclothes we wear, the multistoried home with all modern amenities we reside in or howmuch acres of land and volume of wealth we left for our offspring - will not matter.
It all depends how we want to be remembered. After our departure, people will notremember us by the size of our wallet, but by the size of our heart. Our positivecontribution to society will be our personal benchmark of success. The greatest and
most memorable achievement we can imagine is helping another person.Service without self-interest is a great educational discipline. It lifts us out of our
petty selves. It elevates our minds, hearts and spirit. It is spiritual training. It makes our
lives richer and fuller. It gives us profound spiritual satisfaction and makes us really andtruly happy. There is no greater happiness than the happiness that comes to us throughthe happiness of others.
Before I signoff, I must confess- Rotary means a lot to me as it has made me dareto dream and I am sure collectively we can make good things happen and can raise peace, prosperity and glee in society. In ensuing future, I would love to see my beloved Rotary
fully vivacious and vibrant Institution extending all its care and affection towards allclass of people. Let us all resolve to put in the best we can and generate an insatiabledesire in the heart of all Rotarians to hurtle the image of Rotary into an unexplored
horizon of growth, affluence and all round brilliance. I am optimistic that, future ofRotary will be as bright as the pole star in a starry cloudless night sky.
I would also take this privilege to welcome all the invited dignitaries to this 29th
Installation Ceremony of the new office bearers for the year 2014-15 and urge them to
confer their blessings to the incoming team for their all round of excellence and success.
Finally, let me wind up with this thought, "to love without condition, to talk without
intention, to give without reason and to care without expectation-this should be heart of
a true Rotarian"
Once again thanking you all,

Born in the year 1972 to late Durgeswar Saikia and Mrs Minakshi Saikia in Duliajan,
Indira Hazarika joined Oil India Limited only at the young age of 18 just to take care of
her family, as her Oilindian father left his family and made his premature journey to
heavenly abode in 1981. Despite encountering severe tough situations in those ill-fated
days, Indira was very much determined and resolute about her studies and completed her
graduation in Arts stream as a private student under Dibrugarh University. At the same
time her passion towards Indian Classical music had also inspired her to take Bachelor
of Music (Bisharad) degree in Sitar from Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya,
Mumbai. She has already staged several modern and classical Instrumental and vocal
programs in and around the state and also showcased her talent in Doordarshan and in All
India Radio as well.
Intensely inspired by the perpetual motto of Rotary International, "Service above
self" and also with a deep sense of obligation towards underprivileged people of our
community, Mrs. Indira joined Inner Wheel Club of Duliajan as a charter member and
ably served the Club as Vice President for two years and as the President for 2013-14.
Besides above, she is actively associated with the forum of WIPS (Women in Public
Sector) by serving as Secretary in 1999 and 2008.
Her hobby includes playing musical instruments, travelling, shopping, internet
surfing and making friendship with fellow people.
Indira already became a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) in the year 2012 and has attended
several Rotary Programs since she has married to Rtn Partha Protim Hazarika, a leading

The Modi-fication of India !
Tridiv Hazarika visited the Metropolitan Rotary Club in Den Haag when he was
undergoing a PFDM course in Sustainable Local Economic Development in
International Institute of Social Studies, Den Haag, Netherland in April-May, 2014.
It is but very rare when one man occupies the mental
landscape of a nation with over a billion mortals...when the cyber
space, satellite television follow one man's story 24/7...when
smart political slogans and cleverly crafted jingles becomes
popular amongst kindergarten kids who are still memorising
nursery rhymes...when one man can generate such extreme
responses from those who swear by his name and others who have
reasons to loathe his growing stature. The point is rather very
simple, be it the sheer magnetic persona or oratory skills, the
strong anti incumbency of the outgoing government or the

strategic brilliance of a smart electoral
campaign, the connect with the aspiration
driven youth of the country or just the
mood of the nation, you just can't deny the
fact that the whole world is looking at
Narendra Damodardas Modi with rapt
attention.
For someone who like to discuss life
skills, you just can't overlook this very
defining moments in our country's political
history and the impact that one single
leaders in the past have had the advantage
of listening to such prophetic
pronouncements. Modi can very well
decide how he wants the world to remember
him down the years.
Sometime you are left with no option
but to be awestruck by the meteoric rise of
individuals from very humble backgrounds.
When someone without a B School degree
to flaunt or an illustrious lineage rises
above all odds to occupy a position of envy,
39
person can have on an entire
nation. There are already
enough discussion and in
depth material on the life and
growth of Modi as a person
as well as a political leader.
In fact, I doubt if any political
leader has undergone such
scrutiny by his followers as
well as his detractors. While
critics continue to harp on
Modi's right winged
ideological stance and
dictatorial leadership, the
Modi fan club has ample reasons to believe
that Modi can give the decisive leadership
that India desperately needs. I believe in a
way, the critics have done Modi a great
favour by foretelling all the wrong that he
can do in the days to come. We have read
and heard quite a lot how according to
certain political commentors Modi could
play a divisive role and damage the
delicate social fabric of India. Very few
it implies that the person is blessed with
certain very special skills. In many ways,
these skills are horned not in the closed
space of conventional classrooms but
under the open sky amidst the company of
diverse people, where the hard lessons
imparted by abject poverty and social
prejudices at times ends up stirring the
infinite capabilities that remains dormant
in every person. If determined enough, we
ROTARY CLUB OF DULIAJAN

can convert adversities into an advantage
and sharpen the god gifted natural instincts
to yearn for a better life and succeed in
converting such desires into a reality. In
many ways Modi has epitomised this
incredible journey of a person who could
convert all the challenge thrown at him to
his advantage in a manner which could
influence an unprecedented number of
people in India and actually translate this
endorsement of Modi as a leader into what
many calls a turning point in India's
political life.
Now whether this euphoria and faith
reposed by such a large percentage of
voters on the new government actually live
up to their expectations or the critics of
Modi have the last laugh, only time will
tell. As common citizens, we can hope that
the very simple and basic needs like good
roads, clean drinking water, steady power
supply, affordable education and sense of
security becomes a reality in India under
the new leader. I believe despite all the
intellectual cacophony about the "Idea of
India" and complex jargons of the world of
business, good governance and visible
development, essentially will give enough
reasons for the people of India to give
Modi the thumbs up.
But there is a catch here. While all
of us have more or less in the past few days
are clear as to what we expect from the new
government or even may be dismissive of
what we may feel is too much of a Modi
hype, have we set ourselves our own agenda
as to how will we contribute to the cause
of a India of our dreams? The onus lies
equally on each of us to pledge our
contribution as a citizen of this great
country. India can only change if all of us
are prepared to do our bit. It is therefore
not said without reason that people get
the leader / government they deserve. For
the time being, let's pray that India wins !

The book 'The Winner Stands Alone',
narrates a story which goes like this. A
small country surrounded by snow and
jungle was ruled by a section of corrupt
people whose image in the eyes of their
subjects had reached its nadir. To
rejuvenate their image, they decided to
appoint a new king -a willing common man
- for a term of four years. But after
completion of his term as king, he would
have to leave the kingdom empty handed
into the dense forest covered with deep
snow. It was a known fact that anybody
going to the forest could not survive for
more than a few days. (The corrupt people
had thought that no common man would
come forward to risk his life).
A young man- married and having
two kids- came forward and offered
himself to become the king. The corrupt
people discouraged him saying that he had
full life before him and he had young &
beautiful wife and two small kids. His wife
herself discouraged him but he insisted to
be a candidate. So he was crowned the king.
During his tenure, he took keen
interest for the welfare of his subjects. The
kingdom prospered. There was peace and
brotherhood everywhere. Everybody was
so happy to the extent he had never
experienced during their life time. The king
was loved by everyone.
At the end of his term, when he was
leaving -along with his wife and kids- he
was given a tearful farewell by lacs of
people. (Up to this I liked the story- the
young king, his determination, his
administration and his concern for his
subjects After that I became a little sad)
After leaving the kingdom , his wife
became sad to realize that they would die
soon in the forest. But he was not perturbed
and beckoned his wife to come along. After
walking the whole day, they reached a hill
top and saw a beautiful township down the
hill. He told his wife "From the very first
day of my crowing as king , I realized that
corruption was so deep that it could not be
eradicated. So I smuggled the wealth of
nation and built my own kingdom. Now we
will rule this kingdom forever. (And I
became sad)

HISTORY
OF
ROTARY
IN
INDIA
Calcutta was the home town for the
first Rotary club in the mainland of Asia.
R.J. Combes, the manager of a steel
products company while on a business trip
to U.S.A. was so impressed by the
"Friendship, fellowship, and service" that he
wanted to introduce the idea to his friends
in Calcutta also. There was no difficulty for
him to convince enough people and
convene the first meeting on 26
September, 1919. The new club was
chartered on the New Year day of 1920 to
be exact. All the twenty charter members
were non-Indians.
The first Indian member was
S.C.Rudra who was inducted in 1921. In
1921 itself Sir Surendranath Banerjee was
made an honorary member. The first Indian
to become the club secretary was Nitish
C. Laharry (1926) who climbed all steps
to reach Rotary's top slot viz. R.I. president
ship in 1962-'63.
A.FM.Abdul Ali was the first Indian
to adorn the collar of a club president. Club
chartered in Lahore (in Pakistan now) in
1927, and then things changed when James
Wheeler Davidson of Calgary, Canada
arrived on Indian shores with a firm
determination to spread Rotary in India. In
fact he was responsible for establishment
of Rotary clubs in different countries
including Australia, New Zealand,

Amritsar and to Bangalore in 1934. By
1936 Ahmedabad, Baroda, Jamshedpur,
Poona and Sholapur had Rotary clubs.
Three clubs were chartered in 1937,
Lucknow, Surat and Cochin. R. C. Of
Cochin had by the time India became
independent, there were 71 Rotary clubs
(14 in Gujarat, 10 in Maharashtra, 10 in UP,
seven in Tamil Nadu, seven in Karnataka
and 23 in another 10 states) with a total
membership of 3121 members. Up to
1931-32, Rotary clubs in India were non-
districted. From 1932 to 1935 clubs in
India, Burma and Ceylon were grouped
under provisional District A. On 1 July
1935 District 89 was formed with clubs
in Afghanistan, Burma, Ceylon and
undivided India. The first district governor
was Sir Frederick E James (1935-36).
The first conference of Provisional District
"A" was held in 1932 at Calcutta with Sir F.
E. James as the first governor with a total
registration of 39. The 1934 conference
was held at Bombay and 1936 at Bangalore.
Southern Europe, Egypt, Siam and Japan
and was known as 'Marco Polo of Rotary.'
Jim Davidson planted Rotary in Bombay as
well as Madras (now Chennai) in 1929.Of
the 38 charter members of the club in
Bombay, 37 were non-Indians. The only
Indian was Sir Phiroz Sethna, a legislative
member, who later served as district
governor (1937-'38). The formation of the
Madras Club was on 10 May 1929, Even
though Davidson organised a Rotary club
in Delhi also in 1929, in a couple of years
the club had to be closed down as the
membership tapered off due to one or other
reasons. In 1930 two clubs were formed-
Etah and Meerut.
Mahatma Gandhi addressed Rotary
Club of Calcutta which had only non Indians
on the rolls even then. The growth of
Rotary in India was rather very slow for
many years, due to the predominance of
foreigners in the clubs and other reasons
such as agricultural nature of Indian
economy.
In 1933 Rotary branched out to

WOMENEMPOWERMENT
Success of women leaders reflect
that now women are not lagging behind the
man in any sphere, as it is earlier believes
that it is only made for men. It proved that
they are equal in every sphere of life.
Though they have pride place in households
and society, women still lagging behind the
men in the some arena. Many women come
forward and compete with the male and get
a remarkable victory. This is a good sign
for the entire women community.
Now, the scenario of all sphere has
changed. In various countries the nation is
headed by a female. In the first instance we
can point out the victory of Pratibha Devi
Singh Patel who sworn as the President of
India, the worlds largest democracy. It is
not new for India that women ruled the
nation. The trend has begun with the Razia
Begum, who sworn as the Sultan of Delhi
in 1236 A.D.
A Long delayed and a much needed
Step - Achieving the goal of equal
participation of women and men in decision
making will provide a balance that more
accurately reflects the composition of
society and is needed in order to strengthen
democracy and promote its proper
functioning…without the active
participation of women and the
incorporation of women's perspectives at
all levels of decision-making, the goals of
equality, done Women's Day (March 8),
India witnessed the high voltage drama over

much talked Women' Reservation Bill in
the Parliament. The Women's Reservation
Bill is the most essential bill to empower
women in Indian politics. According to the
bill, women will enjoy 33 percent of the
reservations in the Lower House of the
Parliament and Assemblies.
Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of the
Parliament has passed the Women's
Reservation Bill on 9 March 2010, this day
in India can be termed as one of the historic
days in Indian politics. Major political
parties were in favor of the bill.
An empowered woman can change a
lot in the society. Unlike other Women
Empowerment programs, we believe that
Money as an energy is one of the most
powerful empowerment tools. The
practical steps to create income for
women, who are capable and intelligent and
willing to work, however due to various
reasons are unable to do it today.
The reasons could be varied for
various women, some women could be
deprived of these opportunities because
their men dont want them to work, the
others may be restricted due to family
pressures or peer pressures. Well, its time
to let go of all pressures and work towards
becoming empowered with regular income
coming your way.
It is amazing that from an early age,
women start to learn about some of the
finest human qualities like compassion,
self awareness, sacrifice, service, devotion
by observing their own mothers,
grandmothers and other women in their
lives.
The four pillars of business which are
dedication, consistency, hard work and
honesty are also attributes of women. For
many centuries, the role of woman was to
be the nurturing institution for her children,
to be the solid foundation for her spouse.
Then came the times when women got to
the space of equality in the work place,
achieving their own dreams, and becoming
equal financial contributors within their
households.
Women Empowerment India is an
initiative to take practical steps to make
Women of India financially independent
through various initiatives. Despite the
odds women can overcome all obstacles.
In the past, women have desperately
struggled because they were belittled by
men. They were thought of as ignorant
beings that only knew how to manage
housework.
In today's society women do not have
a very prominent role as there male
counterparts. It seems as if men are looked
upon as born leaders who should hold
power. They look strong and confident.
People feel safe that males will lead them
in a strong, protective way. Women are
looked at very differently. People see them
as weak in heart and afraid of doing things
in a forceful manner.
The need for women's empowerment
45
ROTARY CLUB OF DULIAJAN
29th Installation Ceremony
arises from the subordinate position they
have been accorded for a long time. The
empowerment has been felt as a tool to
bring about changes in their socio-
economic condition. It has been felt on the
part of nation as well as individual that no
society can progress till women, a major
constituent of society, lag behind.
When a ruler runs his or her empire
successfully it means that throughout his
or her rein as king or queen everything ran
smoothly. This means that no one would
try to over throw him or her and that the
people were happy. Effective is very
different than successful. If a ruler is
effective he or she understands what the
people want. An effective ruler gives his
or her people what they want and
understands the needs of his or her
people.
Therefore, our efforts should be
directed towards the all- around
development of each and every section of
Indian women, not confining the benefit to
a particular section of women in society,
by giving them their due share. It is a must
to protect their chastity, modesty and
dignity and ensure their dignified position
in society. Without removing social stigma,
enduring progress and development could
not be achieved. For this, the governmental
and non-governmental organisations
including media should come forward and
play an active role in creating awareness in
society.
The task is not too difficult to
achieve. The honesty and sincerity on the
part of those involved is a must. If the lots
of women change, definitely it will have a
positive impact on society. Hence, the
women's empowerment is the need of the
hour.

Before year 1989, Rotary generally

be consistently positive, and you will
radiate a natural joy into the world. And
that's called love.
How you see the world shapes what
you bring to the world. Do you bring fear
or love ? You can positively affect the
world 'out there', but only when you
change how you see the world 'in here',
and that's entirely your choice. In a world
where we are largely taught to believe the
worst and see the negative, making that
positive and creative choice will, for
many, require power, practice and new
perceptions at a personal level. Are you
ready to change your mind ? Are you
prepared to change how you see the
world ?
Sometimes, after practicing
meditation for a while, especially on our
own, we may find ourselves thinking, "Why
am I doing this anyway?" Especially if we
feel we are making slow progress. In
moments like this it's useful to remind
50

It's Entirely up to You
The Ripple Effect
When you make the conscious shift
from 'world as a dark and dangerous place'
to 'world as playground with infinite
creative possibilities' you are the first to
'feel' the positive effects. Those around
you receive a positive energy, and you
create what is known as the 'ripple effect'.
In that moment you would be called 'a
leader'.
Gandhi knew this as he walked his talk
of absolute non-violence.
Mandela knew this when he forgave
his captors.
Mother Teresa knew and expressed
this through her compassion.
They didn't ignore the reality of
others situations, they didn't deny the
suffering around them.
They changed how they saw their
world and that changed our world …
forever.
WHY MEDITATION ?
ROTARY CLUB OF DULIAJAN

yourself of some of the most important
reasons and benefits that come from
sustained practice.
The simplest definition of meditation
is the cultivation of self awareness.
Without self awareness you cannot see
what you are doing wrong at the levels of
your own thoughts and feelings. In fact,
you cannot even see that it is you and not
someone else who creates your thoughts
and feelings! When you fall under the
illusion that others are responsible for what
you feel you condemn yourself to a
stressful life as you become dependent on
external sources of stimulation in order to
'feel' OK, and then perform your very own
award winning performance of The Victim!
Meditation raises your self-awareness and
therefore self-responsibility.
In the external world we tend to define
control as getting a grip on things and
handling people and issues firmly. In the
internal world of our thoughts and feelings
control does not come with a tight grip, or
a struggle, or 'trying' to make certain
thoughts and feelings go away. Control on
the inside comes from doing the opposite
i.e. letting go, and being more like a
detached observer of our thoughts and
feelings. This is the first step in the practice
of meditation which will eventually give
you the ability to be the master of our own
thoughts and feelings.
In a world almost totally focused on
action it is easy to forget that we are a
human being first, and humans doing
second. It is easy to forget that everything
we do flows from our state of being. Few
of us learn how to create our state of being,
yet we all know that if we start the day in a
grey and grumpy mood it doesn't matter how
beautiful the day may be, it is still a grey
and grumpy day!
Once you become more aware of
your thoughts and feelings, once you see
why they emerge (self awareness) and once
you restore the power of choice and
control, you can work at a deeper level and
consciously create your state. Just as the
miner works deep underground at the coal
face, so meditation gives you the ability to
work at the deepest levels of your
consciousness, at the coal face of the soul.
It is there that you find your original states
- peace, love and a natural joyfulness that
are not dependent on anything external.

Managing Time
Every morning credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night rules off as "lost"
whatever you have failed to use toward good purposes. There are no carry forwards,
no overdrafts. You cannot hoard time, save it, store it, loan it or invest it. You can
only use it.
Here are six terrific truths about time :
l Nobody can manage time. But you can manage those things that take up your time.
l Time is expensive. As a matter of fact, 80 percent of our day is spent on those
things or those people that only bring two percent of results.
l Time is perishable.
l Time is measurable. Everybody has the same amount of time.....pauper or king.
l Time is irreplaceable.
l Time is a priority. You have enough time for anything in the world, so long as it
ranks high enough among your priorities.
Life is relationship, and relationship
is communication. Both our success and
satisfaction in life will depend to a large
degree on how well we communicate with
others. Our ways of communication are
largely learned from external influences
like parents and society, which means many
of us have difficulty in connecting and
communicating from our own heart, our
true heart. The practice of meditation,

What is
Online
Shopping
???Online shopping is the process of
buying goods and services from merchants
over the Internet. Since the emergence of
the World Wide Web, merchants have
sought to sell their products to people who
spend time online. Shoppers can visit web
stores from the comfort of their homes and
shop as they sit in front of the computer.
Consumers can buy a huge variety of
items from online stores, and just about
anything can be purchased from companies
that provide their products online. Books,
clothing, household appliances, toys,
hardware, software, and health insurance are
just some of the hundreds of products
consumers can buy from an online store.
Many people choose to shop online
because of the convenience. For example,
when a person shops at a brick-and-mortar
store, she has to drive to the store, find a
parking place, and walk throughout the store
until she locates the products she needs.
After finding the items she wants to
purchase, she may often need to stand in
long lines at the cash register.
In contrast, online shopping helps
consumers avoid these disadvantages. A
person only has to log onto the Internet,
visit the store's website, and choose the
items she desires. The items are held in a
virtual shopping cart until she is ready to
make her purchase. The shopper can remain
in her nightgown as she does her shopping,
and the process can be conducted in the tiny
hours of the morning or late into the night.
Online stores almost never close.
Despite the convenience, not
everyone chooses to purchase items and
56

services online. Some people like the idea
of physically going to a store and
experiencing the shopping process. They
like to touch the goods, try on clothing, and
be around other people. Online shopping
doesn't permit shoppers to touch products
or have any social interaction, and it also
doesn't allow them to take the goods home
the same day they buy it.
Other people may worry about
shopping online because they fear their
credit card information will be
compromised. Since it's necessary to
provide credit card information when
purchasing products online, it is possible
for individuals to become victims of
identity theft. Using secure servers can
help, but it's no guarantee that credit
information will remain private.
Another reason some consumers
avoid shopping online is the fact that they
worry that the products they purchase are
not accurately portrayed in the website's
picture or that they will be of lesser quality.
It's also impossible to try on apparel bought
over the Internet, so a consumer has to rely
on body measurements in order to make
sure the clothing will fit properly. If the
clothing arrives in the mail and it's too
small, it must be mailed back, which is a
potential inconvenience that some shoppers
may not wish to face.

It is hard to believe that from 1905 until 1989, the Constitution and Bylaws of
Rotary International stated that Rotary club membership was for males only. In 1978,
the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, USA, invited three women to become Rotary
members. The RI Board withdrew the charter of that club for violation of the RI
constitution. The RI attorney argued that "… [The decision] threatens to force us to take
in everyone, like a motel. The club brought suit against RI claiming a violation of a state
civil rights law that prevents discrimination of any form in business establishments or
public accommodations. The appeals court and the California Supreme Court supported
the Duarte position that Rotary could not remove the club's charter merely for inducting
women into the club. The United States Supreme Court on 30 March, 1987upheld the
California court indicating that Rotary clubs do have a "business purpose" and are in
some ways public-type organizations. This action in 1987 allowed women to become
Rotarians in any jurisdiction having similar "public accommodation" statutes. In October
of 1987, the Rotary Club of Angels- Murphys District 5220 inducted three women and
in spite of threats to quit Rotary by some of the older male members - none did. Two of
these three women went on to lead their Rotary Club as president and one completed
over two years as charter president of the Angels Camp Centennial Rotary Club (a club
which is very proud of its 50% female membership). That president on 23 June, 1987
Dr Sylvia Whitlock was inducted by DGE Dr Kim K Siu as the first woman Club president
in the history of Rotary has completed 19 years of perfect attendance. The RI
constitutional change was made at the 1989 Council on Legislation in January, with a
vote to eliminate the "male only" provision for all of Rotary. At this time there are now
over 215,000 women who have become members and leaders of clubs and districts
throughout the world. On 1 July1995 Mimi Altman of the Deerfield, Illinois club became
the first woman District Governor of District 6440.

In 2002 after taking her Xth Board

inspirational for our beloved Rotaractors.
I reproduce the letter hereunder:-
Hi, How r u ? Enjoying your holidays.
So, we are expecting our results of
class X anytime at the end of this month.
Our heart beat is increasing with the
approaching of our results. Whatever is the
result, we should accept it with equal zeal
& courage. If we get our result as per our
expectations, we will have much
opportunity lying ahead and a smooth road
to walk upon. If we get the result contrary,
we should not be disheartened since
failures give us opportunities to work harder
and imbue in us a sense of challenge. This
sense sometimes gives us a strong feeling
to fly high in our life as difficulties refine
our personality. Now I tell you a story.

Sometimes, struggles are exactly
what we need in our life. If God allow us to

it would cripple us. We would not be as
strong as we could have been. Never been
able to fly.

INTERNATIONAL RYLA2014
Youth being guided by Rotary is really praiseworthy. Rotary Youth Leadership
Awards (RYLA) is one of the best gift I have ever received. New friends, new atmosphere, new and adventurous activities, leadership training, fun, games is what it is all about.
What an experience it was ! The journey on 23rd April to RYLA
venue(RRTC,Umran, Megalaya) itself was exiting .Exiting in the sense that it was a place
that I was travelling for the first time and all by myself . It helped me explore the placesthat I had been hearing since my childhood.
Being there was another special feeling with the company of unknown beings,
followed by roomates and new friends. A Khasi guy from Meghalaya and another from
Kalimpong were the first two to interact with me .The evening was special for us too asthe Governor of Meghalaya Mr. K.K. Paul inaugurated the RYLA 2014 .I was very much
surprised and pleased to know that he is a great fan of cricket and a music lover. The key
words of his speech were 'Thinking ahead ', 'Planing', 'Focus' followed by 'Commitment'.
Moreover it was because of that evening I came to know from Past Dist. Governor(3240)Rtn. A.K. Endow Sir about the TEACH initiative of Rotary, which is to eradicate illiteracy
from South-East Asia by 2017.

most enjoying and fun one. Fun in the sense
that the way (tone) our Yoga instructordirected us the steps ,it was kind of very
funny.
Each session on 24th was full of
content and unique activities. Group
and one unsuccessful story was shared byeach of us.This activity helped us realizing
what we had in common and how special
each one of us are . Next was a hike to

On this day , the presentations on 'Life

Youth in peace building' did help me a lot
in accepting myself as who I am .This was
perhaps the first time I Iistened to myinnerself and realised what I had been
missing in my life .The camp fire at night
after the valedictory function was the best
night of my life.Unlike the RYLA,2012 inSikkim ,this time I danced whole heartedly
and started the Camp fire session with a
Bihu Song . I still remember how
enthusiastically the Past Dist. Governor of

the 27th of April . A day that started slow
and steady but had a fast and emotional
ending .The RYLA 2014 ended with theSight Seeing of the places like 'Elephant

THE 4 -WAY TEST
One of the most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics in the world is the
Rotary "4-Way Test." It was created by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in 1932 when he was asked
to take charge of the Chicago based Club Aluminum Company, which was facing bankruptcy
Taylor looked for a way to save the struggling company mired in depression-caused financial
difficulties. He drew up a 24-word code of ethics for all employees to follow in their business
and professional lives. The 4-Way Test became the guide for sales, production, advertising and
all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company was credited to this
simple philosophy.
Herb Taylor became president of Rotary International during 1954-55. The 4-Way Test
was adopted by Rotary in 1943 and has been translated into more than 100 languages and
published in thousands of ways. The message should be known and followed by all Rotarians.
Of the things we think, say or do:
t Is it the TRUTH ?t Is it FAIR to all concerned ?t Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS ?t Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
