Core Values

Objects of Rotary

The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy en-terprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

First: The development of an acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Second: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthi-ness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an oppor-tunity to serve society;

Third: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal business & commu-nity life;

Fourth: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world of fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotarian Code of Conduct As a Rotarian, I will: 1. Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life 2. Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect 3. Use my professional skills through Rotary to mentor young people, help those with

special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and in the world 4. Avoid behaviour that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians

The Rotary Four Way Test Of the things we think, say or do: 1) Is it the TRUTH? 2) Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4)  Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Rotary International Founder - Paul Harris

Paul R Harris, a lawyer, was the founder of the world’s first and largest international service club organisation. Born in Racine, Wisconsin, USA on 19 April 1868 Paul was the second of six children to George N. Harris and Cornelia Bryan Harris. At age 3 he moved to Wallingford, Vermont, where he grew up in the care of his grandparents. Married to Jean Thompson Harris (1881-1963), they had no children. He received an LL.B. from the University of Iowa and re-ceived an honorary LL.D from the University of Vermont. Paul Harris worked as a newspaper reporter, a business teacher, stock company actor, cowboy, and travelled extensively in the USA and Eu-rope selling marble and granite. In 1896 he went to Chicago to practice law. One evening Paul visited the suburban home of a professional friend. After dinner, as they strolled through the neighbourhood, Paul’s friend introduced him to various tradesman in their stores. It was here Paul conceived the idea of a club that could recapture some of the friendly spirit among businessmen in small communities. On 23 February 1905 Paul Harris formed the first club with three other businessmen: Silvester Schiele, a coal merchant; Gustavus Loehr, a mining engineer; and Hiram Shorey, a merchant tailor. Paul Harris named the new club “Rotary” because members met in rotation at their various places of business. Club membership grew rapidly. Soon Paul became convinced that the Rotary club could be developed into an important service movement and strove to extend Rotary to other cities. Paul was also prominent in other civic and professional work. He served as the first Chairman of the Board of the National Easter Seal Society of Crippled Children and Adults in the USA and of the International Society for Crippled Children. He was a member of the board of man-agers of the Chicago Bar Association and its representative at the International Congress of Law at The Hague, and a committee member of the American Bar Association. He received the Silver Buffalo Award from the Boy Scouts of America for distinguished service to youth, and was decorated by the governments of Brazil, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France and Peru. Paul maintained his law office for most of his life. He spent much time travelling and was invit-ed to speak to Rotarians at annual conventions, District and regional meetings and other func-tions. When President Emeritus Paul Harris passed away on 27th January 1947, his dream had grown from an informal meeting of four business men to some 6,000 clubs. In the subsequent fifty four years, the organisation has grown to more than 29,500 clubs with around 1.2 million members, all brought together through Paul Harris’ vision of service and fellowship.

Rotary International President’s Message

ROTARY: MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Some years ago, a new acquaintance asked me what should have been a simple question: “What is Rotary?” I opened my mouth to reply and then stopped short with the realization that I simply did not know where to begin. The problem wasn’t that I didn’t know what Rotary was. The problem was that Rotary was — and is — too large and complex to easily define. We are a member-based organization, a club-based organization, and a service based organization; we are local, regional, and international; we are community members, businesspeople and professionals, working and retired, active in nearly every country in the world. Every one of our 1.2 million members has a unique set of goals, experiences, and priorities; every one of us has a unique understanding of Rotary. To me, Rotary is defined not by who we are, but by what we do — by the potential that Rotary gives us, and the ways we realize that potential in meaning-ful and lasting service. Rotary has been around for a long time: 112 years. In some ways, we’ve changed tremendously, as we’ve grown, matured, and adapted to the changing needs of our members and communities. In our fundamentals, however, we remain the same: an organization of people with the desire — and through Rotary, the ability — to make a differ-ence in our communities, and the world. We answer the question “What is Rotary?” with our actions, by making a difference through our service. As an organization, we recognize how important it is that the world understands what Rotary is, and what we do. At the same time, we know that it is more important than ever to allow our clubs to define Rotary service for themselves. As Rotarians, we have more flexibility than ever to decide how we want our clubs to meet, work, and grow. We’re focused more than ever on making sure that Rotary reflects the people it serves, with more women and a more diverse membership. And we’re working hard to ensure that Rotary remains the world’s pre-eminent volunteer service organization, by emphasizing long-term planning, sustainable service, and continuity in leadership on every level. In 2017-18, we will answer the question “What is Rotary?” with the theme Rotary: Mak-ing a Difference. However each of us chooses to serve, we do it because we know our service makes a difference in the lives of others. Whether we are building a new playground or a new school, improving medical care or sanitation, training conflict mediators or midwives, we know that the work we do will change people’s lives — in ways large and small — for the better. Whatever motivation each of us had for joining Rotary, it is the satisfaction we find in Rotary that causes us to remain, the satisfaction of knowing that week by week, year by year, we are part of Rotary: Making a Difference.

Rotary District 9455 District Governor’s Message

Lindsay Dry (Helen) Rotarians of District 9455

Our 2017-18 Australian Rotary International President Ian Riseley may well preside over arguably the greatest achievement of Rotary International – the year that no new cases of wild polio were reported in the world. Of course the job is not finished until the World Health Organisation declares that polio has been eradicated and that will take at least another three years. In the meantime we Rotarians must continue to raise the funds to support the vaccination program. Wouldn’t it be a fitting tribute for another great Australian Rotary International President Sir Clem Renouf to see this scourge off –after all it was his foresight that provided the inspiration for Rotary to take this challenge on. A beautiful synergy – from Renouf to Riseley-polio gone. Ian Riseley describes his 2017-18 theme Rotary: Making a Difference as representing “what Rotary is and Rotary does, every day and in many ways. All those people who benefit from our great programs appreciate that Rotary exists to make a difference.” He goes on to say:”….Rotary makes a difference to ourselves as Rotarians. We are improved as people by following the guiding principles that come from our mission statement and the Object of Rotary. The world is a better place because of Rotary making a difference!” What about our little part of the world and our place in it? It is my wish that Rotarians in District 9455 are relaxed and happy, that we find happiness in our Rotary service and that we help those in need find happiness. For me it is quite simple-Rotary is not about you and I as individuals but about what we can achieve together in harmony. The motto of Rotary is Service above Self. And the most im-portant identifying symbol of Rotary is the Rotary wheel-that is why I wear the little Rotary badge with such pride – that is what people are most likely to recognise and ask about. My personal journey in Rotary has been short but I’ve seen the pride of those who have been in Rotary for many years and who have done so much, around the suburbs, out in the bush and in the poorer countries around the world and the satisfaction they have found in providing a helping hand to those less fortunate than them I encourage Rotarians and clubs of District 9455 to innovate, to try new ideas, to engage with their local communities, to spread our Rotary message – our credo - and to embrace our core values but to be flexible and embrace change in a more challenging world.

See you in 2017-18

Rotary District 9455 Past District Governors of 9455 & College of Governors

Rotary was introduced into Australia on 11th April 1922 and was operated by Com-missioners. Professor W.A Osborne was appointed Commissioner for Victoria, Tas-mania, South Australia and Western Australia, and Sir Henry Braddon for New South Wales and Queensland. By 1928 all 17 clubs in Australia had become Rotary Dis-trict 65 (or, more commonly known as, the 65th District). It was formed on 15th Sep-tember 1927 with Fred Birks of the Rotary Club of Sydney as the first District Gover-nor. The following lists the District Governors for D9455 and its predecessor Districts from this time.

The Rotary Foundation Foundation Grants

District Grants District Grants are available to Clubs each year to fund small-scale, short-term activities that address needs in your community and communities abroad. Projects are required to address at least one of the six areas of focus of The Rotary Foundation. The total amount of available funds varies each year depending on the level of Annual Giving in D9455 three years prior. It is therefore in our interest to ensure that all Clubs provide regular support of The Rotary Foundation. The following are provided as a guide in identifying suitable projects for District Grant applica-tions: Projects must be completed within the given Rotary year and project reports and receipts are to be provided to the District committee prior to the end of the Rotary year. Grant funding will be to a maximum of a dollar for every dollar contributed by the Rotary Club. Grant funds will only be provided on provision of receipts. (i.e. Grant funds will not be provid-ed in advance of projects works being undertaken). Grants may not be used to reimburse clubs for activities and expenses already completed or in progress. Planning for grant activities prior to approval is encouraged, but expenses may not be incurred. Please ensure your application is with the District Grant coordinator, PP Greg Thurston, by no later than 31 May.  Chair: PP Greg Thurston

Global Grants Global Grants assist Rotary clubs and districts in carrying out humanitarian service projects in cooperation with a Rotary club or district in another country.

Grants are for amounts ranging from US$15,000 up to US$200,000

All Global Grant applications must be referred to this Committee before final processing by The Rotary Foundation. It is a Foundation requirement that each District reviews the applica-tion of each grant and ensures that the accounting aspects, or the completion of any previous grants, are not outstanding.

Humanitarian Grants The Rotary Foundation’s Humanitarian Grants Program brings Rotary Clubs and Districts together in an international partnership that promotes understanding between different cul-tures. Clubs and Districts are encouraged to use humanitarian grants to help fund projects that achieve a better world through the six areas of focus: Peace and conflict prevention/resolution Disease prevention and treatment Water and sanitation Maternal and child health Basic education and literacy Economic and community development The District Grants Committee (through its subordinate committees - Global Grants Sub-Committee and District Grants Sub-Committee) helps Clubs develop ways to participate in international and local service projects. It also informs Rotary Clubs and/or District commit-tees planning such projects about Foundation grants that can help them. The Committee reviews and certifies the accuracy of all humanitarian grant applications it receives before submitting them to The Rotary Foundation for funding.

Polio Eradication Since the start of Rotary's polio eradication campaign, Rotarians have contributed more than US$1 billion toward ridding the world of the disease. Though eradicating polio is expensive, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health have shown that stopping now would be even more so. Their study, published in 2007 in the Lancet, found that even a small decrease in the intensity of immunizations could cause large polio outbreaks, and a control policy rely-ing only on routine immunizations could lead to 200,000 paralytic polio cases per year among low-income countries. "Thank you for continuing to lead and support efforts to improve the lives of children around the world every day, and for ensuring that they can run, jump, play, and lead productive and healthy lives unimpaired by the devastation caused by wild po-lioviruses," says Kimberly Thompson, one of the authors of the study. "This is such an im-portant thing to finish now." Rotarians are on the verge of ridding the world of Polio.

This should be an inspiration to us all to make an all out effort to complete the job of finishing polio forever.

The District 9455 PolioPlus Committee is responsible for supporting Rotary’s commitment to polio eradication and encouraging all Rotarians to participate in PolioPlus activities.

Chair: PRID Ken Collins

Promotion The District TRF Promotion Committee is responsible for promoting TRF programs and activi-ties within the District as well as encouraging contributions to support TRF programs. The main contribution programs are Annual Giving and giving to the Permanent Fund. Annual Giving. Gifts to the Annual Programs Fund are the cornerstone of Rotary Founda-tion funding. Most Rotarians make their first contribution to TRF through a district or club annual giving program, but annual giving by individual Rotarians is strongly encour-aged. Consistent annual giving support is a strong indicator of an individual’s ability to con-tribute major and planned gifts. TRF’s annual giving efforts have four primary objectives: Promote TRF’s many successes to Rotarians and others Encourage every Rotarian to make an annual contribution Educate Rotarians on The Rotary Foundation’s operations Motivate Rotarians to participate in club- and district-sponsored The Rotary Foundation pro-grams It is important that newer Rotarians have a full understanding of what The Rotary Foundation is & does and how each of us has a responsibility to support it. Please arrange for your club to have a guest speaker on OUR Rotary Foundation during the year.

PROBUS One of Rotary’s greatest success stories… The word PROBUS is an abbreviation of the words PROfessional and BUSi-ness and originated in the mid 60s in England, by Rotary, to provide an auton-omous social club for retirees (over 55) and semi-retired business and profes-sional people. Originally for men and later extended to women, the purpose of the clubs is to hold a regular brief formal meeting of members, usually monthly, followed by morning or after-noon tea with up to one hour for a guest speaker and questions. In between, organised one day trips and outings are usually arranged. The Probus movement had its genesis in two ancestors - both in the U.K. and both established by Rotary clubs. The 1st club in the South Pacific Region was the Probus Club of Kapiti Coast, NZ sponsored by the Rotary Club of Paraparaumu in 1974 followed by the Probus Club of Hunters Hill, NSW Aust in 1976. Today there are 2246 accredited Probus clubs in the region with a membership of 189,000+. ShelterBox A PROJECT PARTNER OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

Every year hundreds and thousands of communities, often with no warning, lose their homes, their possessions and their livelihoods. Every day they are faced with a battle for survival. We provide emergency shelter and vital supplies to support communities around the world overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crisis.

Since we began in 2000, we have responded to earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, landslides, typhoons and conflict, delivering emergency humanitarian aid to com-munities in need.

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the Syria crisis, and the biggest storm to ever make landfall – Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines; we have responded to some of the largest humanitarian crises the modern world has ever known. Alongside this, we have also helped many thousands of people displaced by disasters that are not featured in the me-dia. Simply put, if there are families in need of emergency shelter, we will do everything we can to help them.

Our vision

Avenues of Service Vocational Service

Vocational Service District Chair: PP Allan McLean (Heirisson) The concept of vocational service The Object of Rotary is a philosophical statement of Rotary’s purpose and the responsibilities of Rotarians. The concept of vocational service is rooted in the Second Object, which calls on Rotarians to “encourage and foster”: High ethical standards in business and professions The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations The dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society

As a Rotarian, how can you put these ideals into action? Consider these suggestions: Talk about your vocation in your club, and take time to learn about fellow members’

vocations. Use your professional skills to serve a community. Practice your profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through

your own words and actions. Help a young person achieve his or her career aspirations. Guide and encourage others in their professional development.

If you do any of these things, you are performing vocational service. And if vocational service motivates and energizes you, then you’re in the right place, because vocational service is the very essence of Rotary. It is what sets Rotary apart from other service organizations Excellence in Service Mentoring Networking Pride of Workmanship

Youth Service Director - Beatrice Cervi (Perth) Youth Service covers those activities and programs in the District which are associated with the development of youth and young adults in Australia.

EarlyAct EarlyAct™ is a school-wide service club for elementary students from ages 5 to 12. It is sponsored by one of the local Rotary clubs in the township in which the school is located. The mission and operation of EarlyAct™ are closely linked to the ideals of Rotary and provide the foundation and natural succession into Interact. EarlyAct™ provides young students the opportunity for gaining an in-creased awareness and knowledge of their community and the world. At a young age, all students can easily be encouraged to be caring and helpful. Their minds are open to recognize the dignity and worth of each individual which builds respect for others. EarlyAct™ also engages students in character-building activities and prepares them for lead-ership roles to identify and carry out projects which benefit their school, local and global communities. The EarlyAct™ Club is self-supporting and carries out three service projects annually—one each for their school and local communities, and one which furthers international understand-ing.

The EarlyAct™ Club meets twice monthly for thirty minutes. Meetings are conducted by the EarlyAct™ officers. Two rotating representatives from each class attend the meetings. This may be modified to suit the schools requirements. Meetings are conducted using parliamen-tary procedure, under the guidance of attending faculty and Rotarian advisors.

Officers of EarlyAct™ are selected from the two senior classes of an elementary school. For example, in a Kindergarten through fifth Grade school, the President, Vice President, Record-ing Secretary, Treasurer, Second Vice President and Corresponding Secretary are assigned from the fifth and fixth grade classes. Officers are appointed by faculty advisors based on leadership assessment and teacher recommendation or if acceptable, by a student vote.

There are no dues. Monies for projects and activities are raised through EarlyAct™ Club ac-tivities. The EarlyAct™ Club submits an annual report to the sponsoring Rotary Club.

WA currently has one EarlyAct™ club, Rosalie Primary School, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Western Endeavour. For information on chartering a club contact Jane O’Leary. D9455 Coordinator: Jane O’Leary (Western Endeavour)

Interact Interact is a service and social club for young people aged 14- 18. Each Club is sponsored by a Rotary club which guides the Interactors in developing local and international service projects. Interact clubs are self–governing and self-supporting, offering many opportunities for members to develop valuable leader-ship and teamwork skills. There is currently two Interact clubs in District 9455, there is a great opportunity to increase the number of clubs substantially to the benefit of our youth, as well as Rotary and Rotary clubs now and in the future. Chair: Larry Manno (Mount Lawley)

Rotaract Rotaract currently has five clubs in this District – Rotaract Clubs of Perth, Subia-co, Hillarys, Kalamunda & Mt Lawley The district committee works with and along-side Rotaract in a mentoring and in a support capacity. We set our objectives at the beginning of each Rotary year. Rotaract was formed in 1968 by Rotary in the USA and has spread worldwide. As at February 2014 there are 9,173 Rotaract clubs in 171 countries with an 211,000 members. That's one rotaract for every four rotary clubs and one rotaractor for every six rotarians. Ro-taract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young adults aged 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are usually community or university-based and are sponsored by a local Rotary club making them true "partners in service" and key members of the Rotary family. Through the Rotaract program, Rotaractors expand their knowledge and skills, and address the physical and social needs of their communities while promoting international understand-ing and peace through a framework of friendship and service. They help improve the lives of the people around them and in so doing they develop leadership and professional skills; and establish a network of friends. Rotaract is friendship in action. School Link Program Chair: AG Yvonne HART (Crawley) The School Link Program provides a coordinated mechanism to establish ongoing mutually beneficial links between Rotary Clubs and High Schools to foster participation in the many Rotary Youth Service projects. It is targeted primarily at Government High Schools but non-Government High Schools may be included. The District 9455 School Link Committee has a twofold role. 1.To assist and encourage clubs to develop a close and meaningful partnership with the High School(s) to which they are ‘linked’. 2.To ensure that the School Link Register is kept up to date and that clubs do not approach ‘linked’ high schools other than their own. Clubs should contact this committee prior to approaching another high school or if they would like some assistance in planning their approach to their linked school. They can assist clubs to present a professional, coordinated Program to the schools. Clubs will be advised of the various youth and vocational program timetables by the appropri-ate district committee. The major challenge associated with the implementation of our Rotary Youth Programs is the difference between the school year and the Rotary year. Most schools do their planning in the October and November prior to the following school year, so it is imperative that clubs wishing to promote Youth Programs get involved with their link school(s) prior to their planning (ie prior to October). Some suggested approaches to schools are: 1. Arranging a meeting with the school Principal early in the new Rotary year to ascertain the school's reaction and involvement with the various Programs or simply to reintroduce your club and its Director Youth Services. 2. Identifying the appropriate school personnel for the different Programs, for example: RYPEN may be the Year 10 Year Coordinator. The Rotary Four Way Test Speech Competition may be the Year 10 Head of English or Speech & Drama Teacher. The Science & Engineering Challenge, ConocoPhilips Science Experience, and NYSF may be the Science or Maths Teacher. Rotary WA Driver Education (RWADE) may be the Year 10 & Year 11 Coordinators RYLA may apply to student teachers or newly graduated staff or the person who keeps in touch with past students. As each school may have different personnel being responsible, it is the club's task to be-come familiar with the internal workings of the school and the school year. 3. Conducting vocational career seminars, providing work and job experience, demonstrating interview techniques and giving vocational talks. 4. Providing scholarships for gifted students and overseas exchange or providing rewards or recognition to excellent students for other than academic achievements. 5. Suggesting joint community/school projects. 6. Giving students the opportunity for community service by being volunteers at a Club event or project. This could lead to establishing an INTERACT Club which would be an excellent format to achieve community service by all students from years 8 to 12. 7. Inviting the Principal and/or senior staff to attend your club meeting so that the communi-cation is a two way process and so that all club members have personal contact with their school.

Used Stamps Yes, incredible benefits arise from collecting used postage stamps, a simple project well with-in the capacity of every Club. Several Rotary Districts in Australia and overseas have a used postage stamps project, some in operation for over 20 years and the large amounts of money raised have benefited numer-ous worthy causes. In D9455 well over $1,000,000 has been raised so far. In the first 10 years of the project stamps were sent to doctors in Japan who used the funds raised to eliminate TB in Nepal. Today the beneficiaries are the many projects of Oxfam (UK) and of the Rotary Club of Amba-tur, India. Oxfam sells the stamps in 120g packages for around $3 each through their 700 retail stores and use the funds for numerous overseas projects. In India they are sold to col-lectors and have used the funds raised to set up an emergency hospital. What can your Club do? Simply set up a system to collect used postage stamps from mem-bers and their businesses, trim the stamps from the envelopes (leave 1cm all round the stamp) – a great task for residents of retirement villages (occupational therapists support this for its therapeutic value), and deliver them to: Vin Nairn, All Signs Rear 1026 Albany Highway EAST VICTORIA PARK, WA 6101 Phone: 9361 2662 D9455 contact: Lillian Flynn (Mt Lawley) Spectacles Recycling Project Provision of spectacles to needy people in undeveloped countries is the aim of this project. Unused spectacles are collected by Clubs here for cleaning, sorting and distribution to developing countries, currently Sri Lanka. In 2014, more than 4000 pairs were sent to Sri Lanka along with two spectacle grading ma-chines. This has enabled the Rotary Club of Colombo to set up its own project in conjunction with local optometrists to distribute them to people in need, thus markedly improving their lives. This is a Rotary Club of West Perth project. See www.rotarywestperth.org.au Most optometrists store unwanted spectacles for collection by your Club. Wheelchairs for Kids Inc.

There are two beneficiaries for every wheelchair gifted to a child in a de-veloping country. The child is given freedom to participate in many activities, especially going to school. The carer, mostly the mother, is freed to go to work and contribute to the family income.

Over 37,000 wheelchairs have been dispatched by Wheelchairs for Kids Inc to underprivileged disabled children in more than 70 developing countries since inception of the project in 1998. Some 350 wheelchairs a month are produced by 190 non-Rotarian voluntary retirees in the highly professional factory in Wangara WA.

The wheelchairs are a 3-wheel rough terrain model for children who require full custom fitted postural support. Thus they are fully adjustable for size and provided with postural support devices designed to support children with diseases such as cerebral palsy. They are de-signed to comply with World Health Organisation (WHO) Guidelines and are compliance test-ed in the Wheelchairs for Kids factory to ISO 7176.8:1998 standards. The wheelchairs come with headrest, postural supports, tray, waterproof cushion , basket, knee separator, blanket, toy and tool kit. This iconic Rotary project is run by the Rotary Club of Scarborough with the support of the Christian Brothers.

What can your Club do? Raise money for the project ($180 gives a child the freedom of mo-bility and liberates a carer); organize a Club visit to the factory; encourage members to join a Promotions Committee that supports the project; support the sponsors listed on the following website.

Microscopes in Schools

The Microscopes in Schools project is the concept of former WA Chief Scientist, Prof. Lyn Beazley and the initiative of the RC of Freshwater Bay. The aim is to address the shortfall of students going onto study science at a higher level by introducing them to science at an early age. See www.microscopesinschools.com A set of microscopes is sponsored to a school which then travels up and down throughout the school on a rotating basis. Currently, 107 Rotary Clubs, sponsored almost 19,000 units in 651 schools locally, nationally and internationally. Contact: Di Collins (Freshwater Bay)

Empowering Disabled Youth through Education and Employment, Cambodia.

University House Support – tertiary education and residential services. This project meets the costs of tuition, accommodation, food, transportation and essential supplies. Two houses are rented as part of this program (one for female students and one for male students) to provide accommodation, food, support and medical assistance. Staff live on site to provide pastoral care and to oversee the project. Students with disabilities who stay at the University House Support facility are from poor, mostly rural, disadvantaged families. In 2016, 22 students (13 young men and 9 young women) were supported by this program. Students are supported through scholarships provided by Essential Personnel (Australia) and Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) donations. Students held part time jobs to help support their studies. RAWCS funding received from Rotarians, Rotary Clubs, individuals and businesses provides financial support for selected young Cambodian people with disabilities to attend university. Contact: PP Jan Horsley (Northam) for information as to how Rotary clubs can donate. Rotarians, individuals and business can also make tax deductible donations to this important project.

In the absence of the District Governor at club functions, all courtesies normally extended to the DG should be extended to Assistant Governors. Toast to Rotary International The toast to Rotary International may be proposed by a Rotarian. There is no obligation for a response to the toast, but if so the response may be made only by the District Governor or a past officer of Rotary International (Past District Governor or Past RI Director). Paying Respect with a Toast Toasts are the traditional way of paying respect to a person, organisation or an ideal (not to a country). The toast to a country takes the form of a Loyal Toast to the Head of State by the citizens of the country concerned, to display the loyalty and allegiance that those citizens have to their country. In Australia the standard form of Loyal Toast is: Her Majesty The Queen of Australia. Paul Harris Fellow A Paul Harris Fellow is an individual who contributes, or in whose honour a contribution is made, of $US1000 to The Rotary Foundation. The correct terminology to be used for the acknowledgement of a donation to The Rotary Foundation is a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition ( PHF)

Rotary General Information

THE ROTARY NAME AND EMBLEM Rotary’s emblem originated in 1905 as a simple wagon wheel representing ‘civilization and movement’. The cogged wheel version was made official by a 1919-1920 decision of the International Board. A keyway was added in 1929 to signify that the wheel is a ‘worker’ not an ‘idler’. To this is added a note from the Rotary Club of Burlington, Ontario, Canada: “Our wheel will not act alone. It needs energy… a force to set it in motion”. The new Rotary Inter-national branding has been recently introduced to standardize our Logo and our public image worldwide. The “Rotary” name and gearwheel emblem, including the em-blems and logos of Rotary International and The Rotary Foun-dation programs and projects are known collectively as the Rotary Marks. The word “Rotary” in connection with or in the name of an activity of a club or a group of clubs must relate directly to that club or group of clubs. The activity is not permitted to be related directly or indirectly to Rotary International. The word “International” is not to be used in con-nection with or in the name of the club. Clubs, Districts and Rotary entities are welcome to use the Rotary emblem, in association with your Club or District projects and are requested to name accordingly. The full-color Rotary signature is our preferred version for use in digital environments and whenever printing with at least two colours. The word “Rotary” should appear in Rotary Royal Blue or white followed by our wheel in Rotary Gold, unless two colour printing is not possible or the background renders the gold illegible. One-colour variations of the Rotary signatures are supplied in black, Rotary Azure, and white for reverse type. These can be applied for one col-our printing or on very complex backgrounds that may hinder legibility or appearance of col-ours. The Rotary wheel is our mark of excellence. In addition to being a component of our official logo, it may be scaled up for greater impact and used separately but in close proximity to the masterbrand signature. The Rotary wheel — our mark of excellence — should appear in Rota-ry Gold, unless two- colour printing is not possible or the background renders the gold illegible The Rotary club signature consists of the masterbrand signature plus the club name and should be used instead of the masterbrand signature on club-level communications. The preferred configuration is Rotary Club [of/at] [Location], with the word Rotary coming first. For more details refer to Rotary Internationals Voice and Visual Identity Guidelines an electronic copy of which is included in the Club Presidents PETS memory stick or visit the RI Brand Centre at: www.rotary.org under the manage tab drop down menu.
