ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH OCTOBER 24, 2021CHILLICOTHE, OHIO THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
A Word From Your Pastor:Dear Parishioners:This week, the parish meetings of the Catholic Leadership Institute (CLI) for Real Presence, Real Future will take place in Waverly. Chillicothe St. Peter and St. Mary had theirs a couple of weeks ago. Attending these kinds of meetings is quite an experience. We are invited to open our eyes to see things about ourselves and about the world around us that may not be directly apparent to us. Personally, it can make my head spin. I take it in and then have to wait a while to allow it to settle.Often at such meetings, strong emotions are expressed. Unfortunately, sometimes these are expressed in such a way that we say more than we mean or in a way that comes out as an accusation. We can fall into the “blame game,” suggesting that our current predicament is someone else’s fault. Complaints and renewed expressions of disappointments about past occurrences do not serve to move us forward.Behind these strong feelings and overstatements, there is something very deep that is truly a good thing: a love for our parishes and institutions, and a sense of gratitude for what has brought us to an understanding of our Faith. We are who we are because of where we have come from. The challenge is to make a decision now to take up the mantle and to move forward. God is inviting us through all that has happened to listen to His voice and to allow Him to move us into a new situation.Fears, hopes, joys, and sorrows are all part of life. We can be grateful to God that He has given us grace and time and one another to open our hearts to these experiences. However, we must not allow them to take control. Our imagination can create scenarios that lead us to attack or run away or to be frozen in place. All of this has to be reined in by reason and Faith. Our imagination must be harnessed, along with the energy that comes with strong emotions, to enable us to stay together and to discover a new way of putting the Gospel into practice.Pope Francis has indicated that we are not simply in an epoch of change. Rather, we are experiencing a change of epoch. Something “brand new” is being brought to birth through the Spirit of Jesus Christ. We have to stake our lives on this. It is the only way that frees us to be what God calls us to be. Are you hearing the invitation?
Rev. Timothy M. Hayes, Pastor of Chillicothe St. Mary, Chillicothe St. Peter and Waverly, St. Mary, Queen of the Missions
Altar flowers have been donated in memory of Sister Romaine Boch by the Catherine Weisenberger Family.
Ordinary Time in the Church Calendar is upon us. Would you like to sponsor altar flowers during these ordinary days in the church calendar? You may donate in honor or memory of someone, in thanksgiving, or for a special anniversary, etc. Cost of sponsorship is $30.00. Contact Jess Hamm at 740-774-1407 to see what dates are available for sponsorship. Your help to continue to beautify the sanctuary is greatly appreciated.
Adoration Chapel Intention for the week of October 24, 2021:In honor of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist
Do you have an intention you would like to sponsor for the Adoration Chapel? Contact Jess at the parish office if you wish to request a specific week. Donation is $10.00 per week sponsorship. If you have committed to an hour with our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration and are ever unable to attend, please be sure to request a substitute as soon as possible to give administration as much time as possible to find someone to fill in for you. We are still looking for more volunteers to commit to a time frame and/or become a substitute! If you are interested in helping with this ministry, please contact David Johnstone at [email protected].
Be on the lookout! A few parishioners have received spam emails that look like they are coming from the church office. If you are not expecting an email from someone on church staff, or if an email seems suspicious to you, be careful about what you click on!
His Excellency Bishop Brennan is requesting that all parishioners wear a mask when they are inside the church. Please remember to bring a
mask to wear during Mass. If you forget your mask at home, there will be disposable masks available at every entrance.
This weekend, we welcome Delma Rouleau, organist from St. Mary’s, Chillicothe, who will accompany Savannah Davis at the 11:30 a.m. Mass Sunday, October 24th singing “Domine Deus,” part of Antonio Vivaldi’s larger work, “Gloria.” The translation is: “O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.”
A message from the Right to Life Committee: In our Catholic Church, the month of October is dedicated to prayer for the most vulnerable in our midst. Jesus calls us to protect the lives of children, the aged, the weak, the neglected, the despised, the
widowed, the elderly; the least of these in the Gospel of Matthew 25:40: “And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.’”In 2018 and 2019 alone, Ross County lost 101 babies to abortion; 101 mothers were forever wounded, and 101 men lost the blessing of becoming fathers. Ohio still maintains the death penalty, and euthanasia is gaining acceptance. You can and must help! Please pray for an end to the genocide that is abortion, and help us to promote a culture of life. Become an active partner or financially contribute to our local Right to Life initiatives. We need you! There are many ways to become involved; for more information, please contact Judy Harness at [email protected] or call 740-649-5256.

Happy Feast Day to Sr. Saima! Sr. Saima Mary celebrates her feast day on Thursday, October 28th. Her religious name comes from St. Simon the Apostle. Little is known about this apostle, with the exception that he appears eleventh on the apostolic list, and he was referred to as “The Zealot.” According to tradition, he suffered martyrdom for the faith. We are
thankful for her joy, laughter(!) and service in our parish. Make sure to congratulate her! Happy Feast Day, Sr. Saima!

Online giving benefits you as it is convenient because you can access your account anytime and anywhere through the internet. It is flexible as you can start, stop, and change your contributions at any time. It is simple to use without having to contact your bank or the church office. You can also contribute using direct withdrawal (ACH) or credit cards. Online Giving helps the parish with regular scheduled contributions that occur automatically, thus allowing the parish to manage monthly expenses effectively. It also helps the parish office by saving time and expenses in bookkeeping. Sign up by going to the parish website at www.stpeterchillicothe.com and click on the online giving box on the homepage.

ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH OCTOBER 24, 2021CHILLICOTHE, OHIO THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Fr. Stinnett’s ScribblesLet’s return for a moment to my reflections on Our Lady of Kibeho, the Marian apparitions in Rwanda in the early 1980s. It has been noted by many that the number of Marian apparitions have increased in the past 150 years. In fact, Our Lady of Kibeho – being just 40 years old – is not even the most recent apparition to be approved by the Church. The most recent happened on December 11, 2009, in Giza, just outside of Cairo, Egypt, called Our Lady of Warraq. People may be suspicious about the authenticity of this uptick in visions and messages from Mary, and rightly so. It is easy for the mind to play tricks on people, for medical or psychological illnesses to cause hallucinations, or for people to fabricate the whole thing for attention or to legitimize their own particular agenda. The Church has a strict process to authenticating Marian apparitions, and it begins with assuming they are false, putting the burden of proof on those who say that the apparition is real. In Kibeho, the local bishop established two separate commissions, a theological commission to make sure the messages from the then-alleged apparitions were consistent with Church teaching, and a medical commission to make sure there was not a medical reason the visionaries would have hallucinations or the like. It took nearly a decade before the shrine was built, and two decades before the apparitions received the approval of the Church.Fr. Stefano De Fiore, SMM, a Mariologist, gives three reasons for the increase in Marian apparitions in the last century and a half, responding especially to the wonderment at it always being Mary, and not another saint or Jesus. The first reason is that Mary is the most perfect human person to transmit the messages of God because she was the most open to Him in her identity as the Mother of God. She brought the Word-Made-Flesh forth from her womb, so she continues to bring the Word of God to His people. The second reason is that Mary, as Vatican II says, is the perfect model of the Church (LG 63). God does not want to work alone, but with collaborators, and Mary best exemplifies what the Persons of the Trinity desire as their dwelling place. The third reason is that Mary reveals the maternal side of the face of God, a side which is needed especially in the world today. At Kibeho, Mary’s tears for human suffering and her message of mercy for the repentance of sins shows the compassionate side of God. This is a continuation of the Biblical language for mercy. One of the most profound expressions of mercy in the Old Testament is the word “rahamim,” which in its very root denotes the love of a mother, as John Paul II explains in Dives in Misericordia. The Marian apparitions at Kibeho and all those approved by the Church remind us of the closeness that all of us have to Mary, our spiritual mother. As members of the Body of Christ, with Christ as our Head, we share a mother with Jesus.
Parish NotesSt. Peter Church in ChillicotheCommunication, Teamwork and Youth are the priorities I have set as pastor. At St. Peter’s, I sense that we need to concentrate more on teamwork. There needs to be a spirit of cooperation across the generations. Complaints and criticism made without understanding what is really going on can be disheartening. Outreach involves a willingness to change and to change our minds about how we do things. Decisions which are not made through mutual listening and real discernment together do not accomplish what we are trying to do very effectively. Every group, every organization needs to look at itself humbly and honestly and to discover if there is not a “better way” to be. It is not at all helpful to speak harshly or to condemn others for their way of understanding. We often project our own frustrations on others only to discover that whatever may have happened was, in reality, God’s way of opening our eyes to something new.
