Requirement for Alarm Management

• The scope of work of each operator is becoming wider

• Operators tend to suffer from alarm flooding

– Unable to respond quickly

– Overlooks important alarms

– Alarm flooding may cause plant incidents

• Better and more efficient alarm management is mandatory for safer and more productive plant operation

– Alarm management requires the following points generally

• Adequate Alarm Design to generate alarms efficiently

• Well-managed Real-time Alarm view to reduce alarm flooding

• Alarm Analysis for process improvement

Filter Pane– Based on the priority, consequence, tag, etc– Only the related alarm message for the operator can be

shown to reduce the workload.

Shelving Pane– Non-urgent alarms

can be shelved in temporary– Operators can concentrate

to the alarms which requires urgent actions

Support Quick Actions against the Alarms

• A single operation is required to call up the related dialogs

Context menu on the alarm message– Right-click on a alarm message to show the

context menu– It calls up that alarm related faceplate,

tuning view, trend graph or graphic by a single mouse click

Functions to Reduce Alarm Flooding

• Sorting– Sort alarms based on urgency or priority

(e.g. time of occurrence, allowed time for response, alarm priority, etc.)

• Filtering– Narrow down displayed messages using the identifiers

(e.g. user name, plant hierarchy title, purpose alarm priority, etc.)

• Eclipsing– Display the most important alarm from the same tag folded in a single line

• Shelving– Move low priority alarms to another folder for a certain period of time

(pre-defined by users) or by clock time.

• Load Shedding– Automatically activate predefined filtering

when unexpected alarm flooding occurs.

Filtering

• To avoid overlooking important alarms in the alarm flooding situation, the displayed alarms can be filtered based on various conditions– E.g. Alarm priority, Alarm purpose, Consequence, tag, etc

Filter Pane– Filters can be pre-configured

and can be configured by operators during the operation

– Alarms from ProSafe-RS, System alarms, and Process Alarm filters are prepared in default

Only the filtered alarms are displayed– Operators can consentrate to the related important

alarms which require urgent actons– Less opportunities to overlook the important alarms

Eclipsing

• To avoid overlooking important alarms in the alarm flooding situation, the displayed alarms can be grouped based on tag– Only the highest priority alarm for each tag is displayed– It can reduce the number of lines on the displayed list, so less

opportunities to overlook important alarms

Shelving

• To put the alarms which do not require urgent action on a shelf to hide alarm messages for a while– Shelved alarms are not deleted– Important alarms can be prohibited to be shelved

One-shot• Separating unimportant

alarm to the shelf.

Continuous• Separating chattering

alarms.

Automatic• Separating unimportant

alarms based on preset logic.

Load Shedding

• The predefined filter is automatically applied when alarm flood happense.g.

When more than 100 alarms occur in 60 sec., high priority filter is automatically applied to show only the alarms that need immediate actions
