The early Christian basilica of San Pietro, in Siracusa, is marked by overlapping and continuous transformations, which
until the Baroque period adapted to the preceding structure, but whose spatiality was irreversibly altered due to
interventions carried out in the 20th century in a quest to recover the original image.
The strength of the project lies in the enhancement of the complex layering of its surfaces, showing traces of the past,
its character of “ruin” and in the creation of two new structures, –the false ceiling and the large portal– designed as
re-reading elements of the space and building’s history.

is an extremely fascinating building, characterised by the footprints of
continuous overlapping and transformation that have been left over
the course of centuries.

Los his-
It is located in the neighborhood of Spirduta on the Island of
Ortigia, embedded in a dense and diversified urban block, including
both private homes, as well as a former monastic complex of Ritiro,
the former Biblioteca Comunale, or the ruins of the former Teatro
Epicarmo.
San Pietro is one of the first Christian churches built in Siracusa, after
the edict of Constantine (313 AD). Historians agree to date it in 363
AD and attributed the initiative to Bishop Germano.
The first major architectural transformation of the original church
dates back to the Byzantine period between the 7th and 8th century,
when a new section is attached to the east side. With the Byzantine
ritual the Eastern liturgy appears which required turning the apse
facing east, and as a result it assumes the opening of a new entrance
to the building on one of the lateral façades.
Other quite considerable modifications were made during the
15th and 16th centuries; rotating the orientation of the building to
a new North-South axis, and it was decided to modify the arches
that delimited the nave, radically intervening on some of the existing
pilasters, eliminating four of them. On the North wall a small access
from the Swabian period was closed, and a new entrance hall was

cuatro nuevos ventanales laterales.
built “Catalan Gothic” style in perfect axis with the new Chapel of the
Santissimo Sacramento built at the same time on the southern side of
the building. The Basilica underwent new radical transformations in
the Baroque period, when around 1710 the nave was raised with the
opening of four new side windows. Documents speak of a church
that was enriched with stucco decorations, new frescoes and altars.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the church loses its original
planimetric configuration. The building, which is no longer isolated,
is partly surrounded by new construction, and houses emerge that
are attached directly to the rooms of the church, an aggressive
phenomenon which includes the appropriation from the inner atrium.
The fate of the church changes dramatically when in 1914, under the
cover of the 1st World War, is seized by the military and even used as a
stable by the army. From that moment on, the building lost its religious
function.

It is in the 20th century when the “philological” restoration cycle begins,
ending in the 50s, and focuses on the ripristino1 of its early Christian form.
While interventions that had happened in the time since the Early
Christian period (4th century AD) until the baroque adapted the previous
structure to the new requirements, the restorations of the 20th century,
irreversibly altered its internal spatiality, in a futile search for the original
image of the church.
In recent decades, the body of the Basilica had been characterised by
a generalised state of degradation, marked by its use as a concert hall,
which had involved the insertion of unfit structures and additions to the
delicate balance of the monument.
The complex history of the building becomes the incipit from which
the project gets its strength, with the sublimation of continuous
transformations and overlays, understood not as a problem to conceal,
but as a strategic resource.
The intention was to seek a way to give new life to a “ruin” working
on the idea of continuity, by working on spatiality, surfaces and light, in
which the relationship between matter and memory is the basis of the
process.

The complexity of the layering of the inner and outer surfaces

Superficies
to.

slow process of the building’s transformation. An intervention
that contemplated all of interior and exterior surfaces spaces and
has even led to the discovery of many fragments of Byzantine
frescoes that originally covered the entire church. With the utmost
of caution the strata that covered them was removed, exposing
pictorial traces whose readings postulated the presence of a vast
cycle of paintings with an iconographic program that completely
covered the interior and where highlighted great figures of saints
and martyrs.
Work done on the surfaces not only focused on the walls, but
the paving. After the removal of the stratum of modern paving,
and after the completion of the archaeological excavations, which
provided important new information on the Hellenistic and Islamic
phases of the complex, new pavement was defined. The idea
was to get a soft-touch surface, whose material and perceptual
consistency was that of leather, a surface that gave the idea of
the passing from a mineral element to a biological one. For this, a
pavement cocciopesto2 was used very fine and hand waxed. The
new pavement made of “battuto di cocciopesto” treated with
natural wax is designed as a continuous surface that forms the
flooring plane, safeguarding the Byzantine paving –discovered
during the new excavations. From this ground plan, about 40 cm.

Espacios y estructura
spatiality. Furthermore, during interventions of “restauro” [restoration]
of the 20s and 50s of 20TH century the system of vaults of plaster
had been demolished, exposing the new structural system of wood
trusses of the roof and had significantly altered the spatial relationship
between the aisles and central naves. The two aisles and the inner
atrium had retained the original base structure of stone vaults, while
the new upper wooden roof of the nave had an anomalous relation
between the horizontal lateral spaces and verticality of the central
nave. This distortion in spatial perception of the Basilica has been
resolved with a new structure that includes on the one hand the idea
of a mnemonic riproposizione3 of the original stone vault from the
early Christian period based on the remaining ashlars that mark its
starting point and secondly the possibility to allow the roof trusses of
the 20th century to be exposed.
A semitransparent false ceiling was designed and built with simple
de-saturated and light plywood, supported by a plywood structure
that is placed at the height of the supports of the barrel vault of Early
Christian period, but without touching pre-existing wall structure the

effect is a light wooden element formed by a succession of subtle
light and dark shades, which acts as a filter to the visual impact of
the truss structure of the roof and modulates the penetrating daylight
coming through the upper windows.
The intervention on the surfaces, space and natural light has
sought above all to recover the atmosphere of sacredness of the
archaic expression of early Christian and Byzantine churches whose
ecclesiastical spaces were perceived as having been made by
excavation, removal of the material, similar to the underground rock
churches immersed in semidarkness. The long and complex recovery
work of the layering materials highlights the “ruin” aspect of the
monument, while offering through chroma and surface density, the
idea of an excavated space immersed in semidarkness, in contrast to
the bright Mediterranean light of Ortigia.
One of the many problems to be solved was to re-define the access
of the inner atrium which had undergone various configurations
over the centuries. From Byzantine phase until the 15th century it
had remained unchanged, but with the creation of the new door
and rotation of the church to the North-South axis the inner atrium
was closed in part until the restoration of 20th Century, when it was
decided to re-open it with the completion of a large wooden door
completely out of scale with respect to the current situation, in which
the eastern façade is partially hidden behind private buildings.
Given the historical complexity and transience use, the design
solution has sought a kind of materialisation of the reading of the
processing stages: as a transformation from the open space of
passage to a confined space and then opened again with a wooden

portal. Therefore, a thick panel made entirely of Corten steel was
created, which gave the idea of the same thickness as a wall but
slightly detached from the sides and the pressure surface of the arch,
in order to show on the one hand the character of transit space as it
was originally and secondly the character of the enclosure. This idea of
closing and transit becomes apparent in the opening system through
the frontal push at the bottom of the panel, as one monolithic piece
moving freely in the inner space of the atrium, as a screen and filter
towards the sacredness of the inner space. With a slight push, the
monolith comes in contact with the volume of the inner atrium,
which determines its sizing. The surface of Corten steel of the new
portal with its natural oxidation manifests the idea of temporality; on
the other hand, the decision to resolve all technological issues with
simple handcrafted solutions, exposing joints and various traces of
execution is understood as a value to be displayed. Design selections
derived from the idea of continuity with matter and pre-existing forms
within the flow of time and its evolution.
