Abstract The subject of this article is the comparative study of prevention implementations in Greece and the Netherlands. A definition of certain basic concepts is followed by a brief presentation of the typology and the field of the interventions. Subsequently presented is the latest epidemiological data related to the use of drugs in the general and school population of the two countries. After the presentation of the main elements of the European prevention action plan, the key elements of the national strategic plans are reported, with the presentation of implementation efforts in each one of the two countries. Based on the latest data for each country, the types, the philosophy and the span of the interventions in separate fields (universal, selective, indicated) are briefly presented. Finally, an attempt of comparative assessment of interventions in both countries is made. From when the first Generation Drug Education Programs were implemented until today, a large number of changes taken place: from challenging old myths, we are now confronting the need to overcome new challenges. The requirement of setting quality standards in the field of priorities related to demand reduction and accordingly to the preventive policies, makes it imperative to seek practices which will increase the efficiency of actions. The study and comparison of different examples, the use of findings and the identification of forcible elements and the weaknesses of applications in different countries, can contribute positively in that direction. A b s t r a c tThe subject of this article is the comparative study of prevention implementations in Greece

and the Netherlands. A definition of certain basic concepts is followed by a briefpresentation of the typology and the field of the interventions. Subsequently presentedis the latest epidemiological data related to the use of drugs in the general and schoolpopulation of the two countries. After the presentation of the main elements of theEuropean prevention action plan, the key elements of the national strategic plans arereported, with the presentation of implementation efforts in each one of the twocountries. Based on the latest data for each country, the types, the philosophy and thespan of the interventions in separate fields (universal, selective, indicated) are brieflypresented. Finally, an attempt of comparative assessment of interventions in bothcountries is made.
