President’s Letter: Welcome Todd Braman
As a young child, I remember driving to grandma’s house the week before Passover to help schlep her folding chairs from storage and prepare the table for seder. The long hallway leading from the elevator to her apartment smelled of chicken soup and the
many recipes that she and her Jewish neighbors were preparing days before the holiday. My grandmother always remarked a er seder how long it took her to prepare for the Passover meal, and how quickly we all ate it! We would respond with laughter, finish our last spoonfuls of dessert and then rush to the living room before anyone could suggest that we reopen the Haggadah to offer the traditional post-meal readings.
In hindsight, I understand that a er-dinner interaction differently. Buried in my grandmother’s humor was a call for us to slow down and allow the weightiness of Passover and our festive celebration to linger. For us to remain at the table, perhaps not only to finish reading from the Haggadah, but to actually wrestle with its message. On Passover we retell our people’s story, a journey from slavery to freedom. The Haggadah reminds us that we know the bi erness of slavery, and therefore as free people, it is our obligation to look beyond ourselves and acknowledge with love all who remain enslaved today,
all those who are unable to live the life they deserve and wish to live.
Passover begs the question: what does our freedom compel us to do? This question cannot be answered fully while si ing around the seder table, nor is it even possible in the seven days of the springtime festival. Truly answering this important question requires action. Consider Passover not as an isolated island of time in the calendar, but a springboard propelling us into the rest of the year with empathy for those who are less fortunate than we and with renewed ambition to help be er the world. Passover invites us to rededicate ourselves to our sacred obligation to seek out injustice wherever it exists and to join together in continued efforts to help others in need.
One such initiative is NSCI’s annual Family Promise program, a deeply meaningful service opportunity that you may have heard me discuss before. This year, from June 10-24, three to four families with young children who are experiencing homelessness will sleep in bedrooms set up for them in our religious school classrooms. Each morning, the children participate in local summer programs and their parents either go to work, or if they are unemployed, receive job search training and other services. The families arrive back at NSCI in the evening for a hot, nutritious dinner prepared by NSCI volunteers. A er dinner, they will pack their own brown-bag lunches for the next day, engage in
restorative activities and spend the night.
Since beginning our partnership with Family Promise two years ago, more than 50 individuals and families from our community have signed up to help host Family Promise guests at NSCI. Again this year, we need volunteers to prepare dinners, dine with our guests, engage with them a er dinner, provide food for their lunches, and serve as overnight hosts. If you have volunteered with us before, we hope that you will sign up again this year, and we encourage others to sign up to help in this important endeavor as well. If you are interested in volunteering this year, please sign up online: bit.ly/FamilyPromise2018. Both Ann Weisberg—[email protected]—and I are available to answer questions about the volunteer experience.
Although the sweet aromas of our Passover meals have dissipated, and for most of us, the folding chairs and ‘Passover box’ have all been returned to storage, we must remain at the proverbial seder table, and not allow the spirit of Passover to slip from our consciousness. As the Haggadah reminds us, we each know life’s bi er moments, and by God’s grace, many of us now are fortunate to know freedom. Let us, therefore, join together to help others who remain in Mitzrayim—“Egypt” or “a narrow place”—to offer them support and guidance on their journey to freedom.
Warmly,Rabbi Ryan Daniels
Early this winter, we began the search process for a new Executive Director. Using the professional services of DRG Executive Search, we held an extensive and thorough nationwide search to fill the position.
I would like to extend my thanks and sincere appreciation to Jed Mandel for leading the search and to Jeff Echt, Marilyn Perlman, Bob Shakno, Eileen Sharkey Rosenfeld and Dean Weinberg for their assistance in the process.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am delighted to announce that we have hired Todd Braman as NSCI’s next Executive Director. Todd will be starting on May 1. Having most recently served as the Executive Vice President of the Jewish Community Centers of Chicago, Todd
comes to us with a powerful record of success throughout his extensive not-for-profit and Jewish institutional experience at Executive levels. Besides the wide breadth of his experience in community relations and customer service, strategic planning and implementation, Todd is an expert in budget, facility, and security management, as well as systems design and delivery, staff relations and management, and engagement of diverse stakeholders. With his strong references and compellingrecord of innovation throughout his career, Todd made a strong and impactful impression on congregational leaders, our clergy team, and our professional and administrative staff.
Todd has a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and Communications from Indiana
University, and a Masters in Community Based Education from Harvard University. He possesses a deep love and respect for Judaism and Jewish life, both personally and professionally. Todd’s energy, expertise, enthusiasm, and menschlekheit will be a wonderful addition to our temple leadership. Todd is excited about becoming a part of our NSCI family and
looks forward to meeting each and every one of you.
I hope you will all join me in welcoming Todd to our NSCI community.

If you are interested in securing spaces or learning more about the congregational plots, please contact Micah Singerman at Shalom Memorial Park, 847-255-3520. Grant for Inclusion of Childrenwith Learning DifferencesWe are pleased to announce we received a substantial grant for “Raising the Bar on Inclusion” from the Community Foundation for Jewish Education, a department of JUF. This grant focuses on expanding inclusion in terms of expanding the ways we provide quality Jewish
educational experience for students with learning differences in four ways.
1) Addressing the learning differences of students in Jewish studies preschool (Sunday only) through 12th grade by providing support and piloting different formats
2) Experimenting with ways of addressing the needs of students with “moderate” learning differences in 3rd and 4th grade Hebrew classes
3) Creating a proactive system for identifying students with learning differences and communicating with parentsand teachers
4) Providing training and support for teachers and Machoniksto successfully educate these learners
With this grant, we will build on the outstanding work of Lynn Friend and her team who annually work with 50 to 60 students in Individualized Instruction, primarily focusing on Hebrew studies for 3rd through 6th graders.
We should all be proud of our congregation’s commitment to the expansive, multiple ways we make Jewish education accessible in the Goodman Center. We are grateful to CFJE/JUF for helping us raise the bar to benefit our students, teachers, and families.
New! Online Registration LaunchedWe are excited families can complete the entire registration process including payment online for the 2018/2019 school year. Our new website through the ShulCloud network allows us to offer a streamlined registration process for families.

Karav Time is Here!By Neil Rigler
For over 40 years, NSCI teens have been participating in the Elaine N. Sherman Karav Weekend. Not only do our teens come up with the theme and conversation topics for the weekend, but also they develop and run the programs, creative services, artistic expressions, and whatever else they want to be a part of the 4-day retreat.
In my 22 years of being lucky enough to be the NSCI youth advisor, I’ve seen the powerful impact this weekend has had on hundreds of our high school students. I’ve helped edit dozens of college essays about it. I’ve heard students reflect on the importance of the weekend 10, 15, and 20 years later, saying how valuable it was to their personal and Jewish identity.
Check out what our current TYG board has to say about the weekend:
Please visit NSCI.org/youthgroups and scroll down to TYG section to access the registration form for this year’s Karav weekend. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Cantor Benjamin LandsmanBy Ellen Katz Block
Cantor Benjamin Landsman was our first cantor for 43 years, beginning in 1931 until his
retirement in 1974. Even though he was not one of our Founders, he was foundational in the establishment and prestige of NSCI as a congregation. We have been fortunate to have Cantor Landsman’s granddaughter, Ann Haro, speak with us to enhance our knowledge of this beloved and endearing man.
Cantor Landsman was born Berchik Landsman in Zhitomir, Ukraine in 1893, the same town Rabbi Edgar Siskin, his clerical partner on our bimah for so many years, was born. (The two men did not know one another prior to their tenure at NSCI.) Ben had a “singular gi as a Cantor,” Rabbi Siskin said of him in his remarks at Ben’s eulogy. “His voice was a gi from God,” yet he never had any formal music education or vocal training. Cantor Landsman’s father was a cantor and at a very early age learned from his father the intricacies of cantorial
singing. As a young boy, no more than 7 years of age, he sang in the choir in Russia and in traveling choirs with some of the great cantors of the time. This perfected his knowledge and abilities of singing.
At the age of 19, Ben traveled alone by boat from Ro erdam to the United States. Over the years, he brought his 6 brothers, 1 sister and his parents to the U.S. Ben gravitated to Chicago because other people from his Russian community found their way here. He would perform in the chorus at the Chicago Opera Company, performing various minor operatic roles while running his chili restaurant on Maxwell Street. It was at the Opera Company that he met his wife, Sadelle Kaplan, and was “discovered” by Mrs. Sada Cowan, chairperson of NSCI’s music commi ee and Rabbi Charles Shulman, who also was a musician with a love of synagogue music.
Offered the position of Cantor at our now 10-year-old synagogue, Ben leaped at the opportunity to pursue his passion for cantorial singing along with his devotion
to Jewish worship. For the next 43 years, he ushered in a glorious age of music at NSCI, se ing the stage and a high bar for our distinguished cantors who have followed him.
Ben’s talents were not limited to music. He was also a fabulous cook, an artist (mosaics were his specialty), a tailor, someone who could fix anything mechanical and a devoted father and grandfather. He was kind, gentle, genial, warm, modest, spiritual and a magnet for those who had the good fortune to meet and know him. To say that he was well respected and loved is to understate the fondness and affection with which he was so highly regarded. Ann, his granddaughter, told us how he was always waiting for her a er school, making time to cherish and nourish his family. He also made time for the many congregants, friends and admirers who sought his trust, advice and friendship. We are privileged to have a recording of Cantor Landsman along with some ofthe original music he composed.Visit nsci.org/musicprayer to hear his extraordinary, warm and memorable voice.
