As the sun sets on Purim, after a day of festivity and fun, our thoughts invariably turn towards Pesach. The clock has begun to count down, 4 weeks until the first Seder, until the house has to be cleaned, the dishes changed over and all the food prepared. We often fret these weeks before Passover because the task in front of us is quite monumental. The laws of Passover are some of the strictest and most serious around any holiday. We are meant not just to rid our homes of Chametz, leaven, but we can have nothing to do with it, we can’t own it or benefit from it, we search for it by candle light, not because our ancestors lacked high-powered flashlights, but because the light of a single candle is dim and therefore ensures that we are looking closely, intently and slowly in each place. The process of removing Chametz from our homes takes over our lives, and kitchens, we pay ever more attention to the foods we buy before, and eat during, Passover. When we look closely at the idea of chametz though, specifically at what happens if we transgress the biblical commandment, there is a completely other aspect to it. The punishment that the Torah metes out for eating chametz on Passover was that of Karet, of being cut off spiritually from the people of Israel, its one of the worst and most severe punishments there is, you are exiled from the community, spiritually adrift. For the Rabbis it’s a challenge, a physical act is punished in a strictly spiritual way. In response it is suggested that the meaning of chametz can, in part, transcend the physical form of leaven, of wheat, barley, spelt, rye or oats. What it can come to represent are the elements in our lives that act as fermenters, agents that turn things sour, even rotten. Leaven, yeast, if left unchecked can get out of control, causing chaos and very big and sticky messes. Chametz can represent for us, on that spiritual level, the things that hold us back in life, that make it difficult to connect with other people and with God. Passover then, becomes our opportunity, not just to rid our homes of bread and cereal products, but to also search our lives and our souls for those crumbs that need to be removed. Just as we have an imperative to remove chametz from our homes, the same is true in removing that which is holding us back from being our best selves. When we sit down on erev Pesach, around the seder table, a word that literally means ‘order.’ It’s not just the evening that has that specific order, but everything, by that moment must be ‘in-order,’ the table is set, the food cooked, house cleaned and perhaps most important of all is that we must have our selves in order, we must be ready to envision ourselves as leaving Egypt once again. Part of the ritual of preparing for Passover is to prepare not just your home, but yourself for the holiday ahead, for the journey that our ancestors took in the wilderness as they built and developed a relationship with God and the community as a freed people. This year, this Pesach remember that before we sit down at the seder, we each need to have our minds and body in as much order as our homes, only then can we being the journey to physical and spiritual freedom.

Chag Kasher ve’Sameach! Rabbi Ravski

All over the Low Country, plants and animals have been busy building energy for Spring. Soon the blooms we all look forward to in our beautiful corner of the world will be bursting forth. At Emanu-El too we have been developing programming and capabilities to build and charge our spiritual batteries. Led by our tireless staff and supported by a growing diverse team of lay leaders and volunteers, so much good is happening. A few examples. First technology is improving with new software in the office to ever improving graphics and communications, to the ultimate efforts to combine Zoom and livestream and big screens so we could all have fun learning and praying together on Purim. A shout out to the Rabbi for his holiday video on making Hamantaschen! Second, there are more and new creative offerings for kids of all ages from the Got Shabbat for younger children to online learning, gaming and dance parties for our teens. Third, our adult education offerings are growing. The Rabbi is leading an engaging Talmud discussion on Passover that will bring new insights to our family Seders. His Danish and Drash classes enrich the creative sermons he is delivering every Shabbat. This month we are partnering with the College of Charleston to bring an expert Supreme Court historian to discuss Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Just one example of the many ways we are joining with the larger community including the upcoming Three Rabbi Panel on the Jewish Response to Pandemics. We had our first congregational Shabbat dinner on Tu B’Shvat. It was well attended and everyone pod sat at a separate, carefully distanced table. While the weather was FREEZING, we basked in the joy and warmth of actually breaking bread together for the first time in a LONG time! The tables were so beautiful with all of the Tu B’Shvat trimmings, thanks so much to the staff who set everything up and braved the cold with us! COSY had a safely distanced 4th Friday Shabbat dinner. We are continuously working to enhance diverse and innovative congregational initiatives. We hope to create more opportunities for meaningful evolvement beyond holiday services and celebrations. The Israel pre-Passover wine tasting class is a good example. All of this brings me to our AMAZING SPRING FORWARD SYNAGOGUE EMANU-EL ONLINE AUCTION, ALL STAR BBQ AND VIRTUAL GALA! This March 14th event will be the engine that springs our Congregation forward to new and greater accomplishments. We continue to plan and invest in making our synagogue grow and thrive and this event is THE opportunity for you to do your part. The response to our call for sponsorships has been incredible but we are still just getting started towards our goal. This is an opportunity for all of us to get involved to-gether and to pitch in and volunteer! Most importantly, help us to get the word out to friends about the auction. Send the auction link to family and friends outside of Charleston so they can bid on Beach Houses and Hotels to come visit as travel becomes safe again. Help us get the word out to the community, both inside and outside of the E m a n u - E l a n d J e w i s h c o m m u n i t y o f C h a r l e s t o n . Again, we are blessed to have a generous sponsorship from Food Lion (be sure to thank management of Food Lion on Hwy 17 for their support of our community when you go check out the Passover goodies that will be coming in soon). We want to make sure that no member of our synagogue will be left out because they are going through financial constraints or are homebound. Just give me, Bob or the Rabbi a call and we will make sure you have a ticket for the BBQ and the Virtual Gala. Open the emails, read the Scroll, join us as we Spring Forward into a renewed and enhanced spiritual communal bloom.

Sisterhood-Gloria Adelson

Happy March everyone! Hopefully, all who are qualified have been vaccinated with at least one shot. I feel like there will be an end to this pandemic now-just don’t know when! On Monday, February 22, 2021, Sisterhood held a Zoom program “Toasting Queen Esther.” Thanks to Shari Allen and Abby Levine, there were about 15-20 ladies, who learned about Queen Esther and… several of us, as you can see, wore masks/costumes and many of us enjoyed our beverage of choice! After we learned about Queen Esther, we enjoyed each other by playing “2 truths and a lie.” Many good laughs were had. Shari and Abby are planning another unique program for this month. Stay tuned! Save the date—April 18, 2021, for Southern Region Spring Conference! We will be joining with women from North Atlantic Region in the morning. This is a wonderful chance to meet new women. The afternoon will bring a major award ceremony, the Phyllis Grusin Weinstein Award, named for our founding mother. This is the highest award in Southern Region and is always an important event. This year will be the first without Phyllis. She passed away one day after her 100th birthday! Learning about her is inspirational! She was such a special person and beloved by all. And, the day will be filled with social justice! By the way, Phyllis was highly active in the Civil Rights movement, living in Birmingham. In April or May, Sisterhood will host a Women’s League Consultant Training event. A Women’s League consultant will help Sisterhood develop a plan for its future. As I mentioned last month, Sisterhood is looking for volunteers for the board or even to do just one event or one project. Sisterhood is an important part of the Synagogue and we need help to keep it going! Chag Pesach Semach! Gloria

On February 17th, the Sisterhood Book Club enjoyed a discussion of "The Vanishing Half" by Brit Bennett. Thank you to Lisa Isaacson who took our discussion

well beyond the easy question -- "Did you like the book?" The group explored the multi-dimensional

meanings of the title, a character analysis and opinions on why individuals elect to "pass" giving up their

identity, family and heritage.

Please join our book club on March 17th when we will discuss "The Splendid and the Vile" by Erik Larson.

IN JEWISH TRADITION, ACTS THAT GO ABOVE AND

BEYOND OUR EVERYDAY BEHAVIOR ARE

CALLED ACTS OF CHESED.

Tradition teaches that chesed is one of the three pillars that is said to hold up the world, and that the

Torah- our foundational text -begins and ends with acts of chesed.

If you or someone you know is in need of a helping hand or goodwill,

a phone call or a little cheer in these unprecedented times please contact Heather Levy 843-729-2084 or email [email protected]

Kitchen Update

Hello to my Emanu-El Family, This is it! Our kitchen is done and it is beautiful. Once again, I want to profusely thank Rebecca Steinberg. She did what she knows how to do so well. Along with our Leah Bowzard, Rebecca brought everything back into the kitchens, organizing it all. When you see Rebecca, please tell her how much we appreciate the donation of her time and skills. I don't know what we would have done without her. Thank you also to Larry for assisting.

Also, again, thank you to everyone who gave so generously. We can now see (and taste soon I hope) the results.

The BBQ in March will finally give us a chance to use it. That means you will not want to miss out on the BBQ, since I'm told that food made in a new kitchen tastes even more delicious.

Please stay well. Brenda Lederman Your Kitchen Renovation Chairperson [email protected]
