What is the Yizkor Service? Yizkor is a memorial service that is held four times a year:on the last day of Passover, Shavuot, Shemini Atzeret/ Simchat Torah and on Yom Kippur. It is a sacred time during which we lovingly remember and honor our family and friends who have died. It is also a time of healing as we reflect on the on-going legacy of those who nurtured us.

In the Midrash Tanchuma (edited c. 5th century) we already find a reference to the custom of honoring the memory of those who died by pledging charity on their behalf. The tradition of reciting Yizkor prayers at the time of the Festivals was well established by the time of the Middle-ages.

The Yizkor prayers contain many beautiful and meaningful prayers and meditations. A central part of Yizkor is the prayer that begins, “Yizkor Elohim (may God remember),” which expresses the Jewish belief that the souls of our deceased loved ones are bound in the “Bond of Eternal Life.” These prayers are especially poignant for those who have suffered the loss of parents, grandparents and children.

Participation in a Yizkor service is a time-honored way to keep alive the memory of those who blessed our lives. At our Temple Sinai Yizkor services, we will read the names of our loved ones who died over the past 12 months. In addition, we will read and honor the memories of those that have died in past years. A list for you to add additional names will be provided at the time of the Yizkor services.

SPECIAL DENVER COMMUNITY OBSERVANCE

YOM HASHOAH, HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL

SERVICE AT TEMPLE SINAIWEDNESDAY, APRIL 11 AT 6:30PM

Several synagogues and the Denver Jewish community will observe Yom HaShoah this year with a special service and program on Wednesday, April 11 at 6:30 PM, hosted by Temple Sinai. We will share prayers, meditations, and presentations that recall the tragedy of the Holocaust and pay tribute to the survivors. Holocaust survivors will speak and their families will be invited up to light memorial candles. Clergy from the various synagogues as well as Religious School students who have been studying the Holocaust, will participate.

Our act of remembering is important because the number of Holocaust survivors is diminishing with each passing day. As we lose this precious link, those who deny or minimize the Holocaust gain strength. Sadly, too many have little or no knowledge about the Holocaust. They are ripe for the revisionist history. Your attendance at this service honors the memory of the victims and sends a strong signal of justice to combat the growing presence of anti-Semitism and bigotry in this country.

Be sure to pick up your Yom HaShoah Holocaust Yahrzeit Candles provided by Temple Sinai

Remembrance of Things Past-- -for the Present and the Future How quickly the clarity of vision and the feeling of a moment fades, recedes and is obscured by the passage of time. Our memory plays tricks, gives us momentary hints and then resigns in frustration; a realization that “no, it really wasn’t like that at all.” And yet, we strive to remember-- -to remain connected to those people and those events that shaped us. Marcel Proust’s masterpiece “Remembrance of Things Past” struggles with this phenomenon as do we all.

On a recent trip to the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., I was captivated by Mark Bradford’s extraordinary painting “Pickett’s

Charge.” It is based on the famous “Cyclorama” by the French artist Paul Philippoteaux. The original depicts Pickett’s Charge on the Union forces at the battle of Gettysburg, July 3, 1863 and it can still be seen at the Gettysburg Museum. The painting is an enormous work in the round, 42 feet high and 377 feet long. Like most others who have seen the painting, I was moved by the graphic detail of the Americans, Union and Confederate, their horses, the field, the loss, the brutality, the death that ushered in the endgame of this nation’s most horrific war. Indeed, Civil War veterans, hardened by war, were said to have wept when they saw this Cyclorama. So do many of us today.

But Bradford’s work in D.C. plays on that experience. It obscures it, teases it, loses it, and briefly recovers glimpses of it. He reproduces the original and then overlays it with cloth, canvas, rope and paint. Briefly, one glimpses the original and then it is overwhelmed by color and texture. Bradford’s work challenges us: if we fail to remember, our past is lost. By failing to remember, we lose our bearing, our roots, our heritage. Wisdom hard earned now forgotten.

The mitzvah of Passover is L’hagid, to tell the story of our ancestors’ miraculous redemption from slavery to freedom. For thousands of years Jews have gathered with family and friends to tell our story, to read the Haggadah, literally “The Story.” Yes, we tell the story of our ancestors but we are also instructed to relate personally to the story--- as if we were personally there, freed from the humiliation and oppression of slavery, redeemed by God’s will, led by Moses across the Sea and toward the Promised Land, the Land of Israel.

RABBI RICK RHEINS

13

Over time the story can lose focus. The effort it takes to imagine oneself personally involved a bit too much. Who has the time? Besides, did it really happen? And even if the answer is yes, does it still matter? Contemporary concerns and attitudes push past the past, lays layers of new issues on top, paints coats of new images which are soon replaced by even newer images, color upon color until the pigment darkens to black. And all is obscured. And nothing is remembered. And nothing has meaning. And no one shows up. And we lose all feeling and connection and settle for a mere remembrance of things past and lost.

Our Jewish traditions, Festivals and Sabbaths, High Holy Days and Yizkor, Torah and Israel and, oh yes, God, these are the fabric of our being. These are what kept our people alive. These are what have uplifted our people beyond the oppression of bigots and anti-Semites so that our people could achieve the heights of culture, education, prosperity and humanity. These are what inspired all of humanity-- -for the Jewish contribution to humanity is equaled by none. This is our pride and our glory-- -but if a single family goes a single generation without learning about our history and without telling our collective story, that family’s share of the image fades into nothingness.

In this era of the disposable, in this time of division and cynicism, let us hold on to that which has always stood for the good, the noble, the smart and the holy. Let us relearn and rediscover and retell the story of our people, our faith and our heritage.

B’vrakhah,Rick

RABBI SUSAN RHEINSOn Shabbat and the Jewish Festivals, Psalm 126 is added before reciting Birkat HaMazon, the blessing after the meal. The Psalm describes the ancient Jewish hope of returning to the land of Israel as the fulfillment of a dream. During the First Zionist Congress convened in August 1897 by Theodor Herzl, this dream gained momentum as the idea of political Zionism was conceived.

On 5 Iyar 5708 (May 14, 1948), the vision of a Jewish homeland in Eretz Yisrael was realized when David Ben Gurion declared:

“We, members of the people’s council, representatives of the jewish community of eretz-israel and of the zionist movement, are here assembled on the day of the termination of the british mandate over eretz-yisrael and, by virtue of our natural and historic right and on the strength of the resolution of the united nations general assembly, hereby declare the establishment of a jewish state in eretz-yisrael, to be known as the state of israel.”

And here we are, about to celebrate the 70 th anniversary of the modern State of Israel! We can only imagine the expression of joy and blessing from the generations who only could dream and hope for an Israel reborn. But this is no dream! Israel is a vibrant, strong and free democracy, home to more than 7-million Jews and the vital center of Judaism for all of us around the world.

The road to Israel’s independence was long and arduous. It was hard fought against detractors both political and military. Before we celebrate Israel@70, we pause to remember

and honor those gave their lives in defense of the State of Israel, including victims of terror. On Tuesday, April 17, 7 PM, Temple Sinai will host the community-wide Yom HaZikaron /Israel Remembrance Day Ceremony for Fallen Soldiers and Terror Victims. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required: http://colorado.fedweb.jewishfederations.org/page/s/2018-yom-hazikaron-registration

Temple Sinai’s celebration of Yom Ha’Atzmaut/Israel Independence Day will commence on Wednesday, April 18, 6-8 PM. Everyone is invited to participate with the Religious School students in honoring Israel@70. (There will be a separate learning track for adults.)

Our Israel celebration will continue with a special Erev Shabbat service on Friday, April 20, 5:45 PM. JEWISHcolorado Israel Emissary Osnat Fox will speak during the service, which will be followed by a festive Israeli-style dinner and Israel-themed activities. To register for the dinner, please visit http://www.sinaidenver.org/event/israels-70th-birthday-dinner-celebration.html

I invite you to join me and other Temple Sinai members at JEWISHcolorado’s Celebrate Israel 2018 Walk + Festival on Sunday, May 6, 9 AM at South High School, Denver. Last year, over 1,500 members of the Colorado Jewish community walked in support of Israel. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required: http://colorado.fedweb.jewishfederations.org/page/s/2018-registration---celebrate-israel-walk-festival

fabulous, there is nothing like being in Israel to experience the historic, religious, cultural, political and spiritual essence of our Jewish homeland. For young adults ages 18-30, I encourage you to consider participating in a Masa Israel Journey. In 2019, Rick and I will host the next Temple Sinai Israel Adventure! A free land package will be auctioned during Temple Sinai’s annual event on May 5. (Information about the tour will appear in the May 2018 Kesher and, beginning in May, on the Temple Sinai website.)

The ancient Jewish hope expressed in Psalm 126 is a dream come true. How fortunate we are to celebrate Israel@70! I look forward to commemorating and rejoicing with you!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOREvery American Jew’s journey to Israel has a common thread- that indescribable feeling when your El Al flight lands in Tel Aviv. I remember my first flight to Israel when I was to be Bar Mitzvah on top of Masada in 1986. There were people cheering on the plane when we touched ground. I remember looking outside and saw workers on the tarmac and thought to myself, “He’s Jewish…she’s Jewish.” When I entered the terminal and passed through customs, I heard a man tell me, “Welcome back to Israel” I thought, “I haven’t been here before. This is Israel…I live in Chicago.” After two weeks traveling through the beautiful countryside, I left wondering whether this was truly a foreign land to me. It was a question that would take 23 years to answer.

While my first trip to Israel was memorable, it paled in comparison to my experience as a 26 yr old lawyer when I traveled with Jewish Federation of Chicago in 2000. My father and Opa had just passed away. I had started my career path and was left as the only man remaining in my family. I remember going to the Western Wall to say the Shema and the wave of emotion that filled me. So much had changed in my life so rapidly…yet here is Israel and the Wall of our great Temple still standing strong as a place for me to feel so safe and vulnerable.

My 2000 trip to Israel changed my life. The following year the intifada began and I immediately traveled back to Israel with Jewish Federation in 2001 to support the people and economy. Upon my return, each month I held young professional Shabbat services/social gatherings at my home for 150 Chicagoans.

While my involvement with the Jewish community has increased every year since my 2000 trip, I have not been back to Israel since 2001, and my heart feels the disconnect. Anti-Semitism has increased globally each year. I have read stories of hate crimes against Jews; terrorist attacks against Jews in France, Israel, the United States and more; stories of Polish soccer fans joyfully singing Anti- Semitic songs; and how Hitler’s Mein Kampf became a best-seller in 2016.

This leads us to 2018 and Israel’s 70th Anniversary. Like many Americans, I have mixed emotions about the current state of our politics and Israel. I want peace for Israel and its neighbors, but how do we accomplish this when it appears that we are trending the wrong way?

Can we continue to appease nations that want our total destruction? How does Israel restrainitself as the most powerful military in the region while its civilians are brutally attacked by cowards with knives and guns? The answer to me is simple- like the Western Wall that I stood before in 2000, we the Jewish people must stand and proclaim that while we may disagree on the path towards peace, Israel is and shall remain our land and home forever…with Jerusalem as its capital.

B'NEI MITZVAH

SIMONA LAZARUS - April 4, 2018Simona is the daughter of Steve and Tanya Lazarus and the sister of Austin (13/Twins). She attends Deer Creek Middle School and enjoys horseback riding, running, reading and baking.

For her Mitzvah project, Simona volunteered at a local nursing home with her grandmother. Along with getting to know the residents, she ran the weekly bingo games, gave manicures and wrapped and delivered holiday presents.

AUSTIN LAZARUS - APRIL 4, 2018Austin is the son of Steve and Tanya Lazarus and the brother of Simona (13/Twins). He attends Deer Creek Middle School and enjoys running and hanging out with his friends.

For his Mitzvah project, Austin ran a shoe drive for Soles for Souls. He collected over 200 pairs of shoes from his cross country team and neighborhood. The shoes were delivered locally then eventually shipped to Africa where they will be donated or recycled into tracks, playgrounds or basketball surfaces.

DOES YOUR CHILD TURN 13 IN2019 OR 2020? WE ARE ASSIGNING

B’NEI MITZVAH DATES FOR 2020!It is never too late to have our children experience the life-affirming joy and pride of accomplishment by leading a service as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Each year around 60 students become Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Temple Sinai. The 2019 schedule is almost filled up and we have just started to assign the 2020 dates.

If you have a child who will turn 13 (or older) in 2020 and you do not yet have a reserved date for a service, please call Rabbi Rick or Rabbi Susan Rheins and we’ll answer all your questions and help you find a date that works for your family. Date selection request forms also are available in the Temple Sinai office and can be mailed directly to you.

Know that our clergy work personally with each student and his/her family to help createa memorable celebration that will bring a lifetime of blessings.

MIA SAMUELS - APRIL 28, 2018Mia is the daughter of Benita and Craig Samuels and the sister of Logan (16). She attends Cimarron Middle School and enjoys skiing, cooking, jazz and lyrical dancing.

As a dancer, Mia wanted to make sure every young dancer wore the correct shoes. Working with her dance studio, Mia collected gently used tap, jazz and ballet slippers to provide for dance schools in the area who offer free or low cost dance classes to young students.

MEET THE MADRICHIMRena Zucker is one of our madrichim- student leaders- in her second year within our religious school. Rena has been a part of Temple Sinai for 14 years and when she is not a student here, she is a student at Laredo Middle School. Rena plans to graduate from CU Boulder and become a successful surgeon at a very young age. Her favorite teachers at Temple Sinai have been her 4th and 6th grade teachers, Lisa Bonilla and Megan O'Connor. Her favorite parts of the madrichim program are getting to work with younger students by helping them with Hebrew, teaching them about Jewish culture, and talking about her favorite Jewish holiday (Purim).

Rena also enjoys martial arts, specifically taekwondo. and she enjoys babysitting within her community. Rena suggests that anyone

Rena Zucker

who loves both kids and teaching become involved in the madrichim program and adds that it has also really helped her keep up on her Hebrew and Jewish facts.

If you have a child in the religious school entering into grade 7 or 8 and are interested in learning about participation in the madrichim program please email the madrichim coordinator, Cheryl Jordan at [email protected].

SINAI CIRCLE

Every Temple Sinai member has his/her own “reasons” for joining our Temple. Perhaps one or more of your children were reaching bar/bat mitzvah age. Maybe you felt that your kidsshould attend a Reform “religious” school. Or, you were “raised Jewish,” but college, career, family have distracted you from considering a temple or synagogue affiliation -- and now yourealize that a spiritual element is missing in your life.

Our members comprise a wide array of ages, backgrounds, interests, family situations. We have come together in a four-millennia history with a common purpose and theme: The perpetuation of Judaism and our Reform version thereof. To effectively achieve this purpose, we’ve created institutions. And these require financial support, both now and long-term. And that, dear friends, is why we build anendowment. Our endowment provides for extraordinary or unforeseen contingencies. It assists in financing and maintaining our physical structures. It modestly supplements our current operating budget.

Since 1967, generations of Temple Sinai members have generously and gradually beenbuilding our endowment (called “Sinai Circle”). Now it’s our turn. Our endowment committeehas been revitalized, consisting of enthusiastic staff and Temple members. We will be contacting each non-Sinai Circle member, asking what Temple Sinai means to you; why do you feel a level of attachment to Sinai; why do you think Sinai’s long-term viability is so important to Reform Judaism and to you now, and to your descendants hereafter.

Please be receptive to a brief get-together with a Sinai Circle committee member, who will be eager to hear your story. This is NOT a fund-raising campaign. You will not be solicitedfor a present donation. However, you will be urged to make a formal commitment to our endowment. There are several ways to commit (a will is common). Of course, your personal and family obligations have priority in your plan. For the Temple, you need only to “commitnow, but pay in the future,” in whatever way and amount with which you are comfortable.

Chair of our Endowment Committee,Sinai Circle,

Steve Susman

TEMPLE SINAI BRIDGE GROUP FORMING

In addition, we have a group of volunteers on our Caring Committee who will do their best to respond with cards, calls and offers of assistance.
