HOW TO BE A SYNAGOGUE PRESIDENT When I was about to become president of Shomrei Torah, I wondered how I would learn to do the job? You can Google it and, sure enough, YouTube has related tutorials. I had not been an officer or trustee of the synagogue and so lacked experience in how things actually worked. You could also look at the by-laws, which say the President signs documents on the synagogue’s behalf, presides at meetings, appoints committees and so on. All of this is very basic and legalistic stuff, but lacking in the practical detailed direction you need. Shomrei Torah is fortunate to have adopted a system whereby the outgoing President stays around in the role of Immediate Past President for two-year stint. In my case the IPP, Barry Blecherman, has remained active and involved in very important work such as developing plans for greater inclusion in synagogue life of interfaith couples. The entire Executive Board also had a wealth of experience that it was willing to share, and helpful in filling in a lot of the blanks. There is the Rabbi, who has been with Shomrei Torah for 26+ years, has institutional memory and can share Solomonic wisdom and insights into people. Having been around for so long, he personally knows all the people and all the past procedures and practices, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Certain of our committees are chaired by members who’ve been around for long enough to know exactly what to do, naturally a great relief to the new kid on the block. Asking these people to help was like putting the task on auto pilot --- they knew just what to do. You always can call on your own life experience, which will teach you not to get upset when you hatch ten new plans, nine of which work out but one is a total disaster. You seldom get compliments for the nine, but you can be sure to get calls and emails about the one that didn’t work! One thing that helps you learn is a disposition to listen to EVERYBODY, be gracious in accepting criticism and apologize if required.

FROM THE PRESIDENT Henry Ramer

Thank you very much to the Shomrei Torah Executive Committee for the honor of being named Volunteer of the Month. My family is from Brooklyn, New York. We moved to Wayne when I was 1 year old. While I have also lived in Hoboken, North Brunswick, and Lincoln Park, Wayne has pretty much been home all my life. I went to Hebrew School at Congregation Beth Shalom in Pompton Lakes where I also had my Bar Mitzvah. I received my undergraduate degree in Television/Radio broadcasting from Ithaca College; and my MBA in Management and Corporate Communications from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Ithaca College has a wonderful Hillel. It was there where I got involved in Jewish life on campus. I would attend High Holiday, Passover and Friday Night Shabbat Services. It was a chance to be with friends and get a very good-tasting kosher meal after Shabbat services! I always knew that I wanted to maintain a Jewish life and have a Jewish family. Participation in Hillel solidified that for me. I have always had an interest in and love for television, and game shows in particular. My dream to work on one came true in 1995. I was selected as an intern on the longest running game show at that time, The Price is Right with Bob Barker! I was in the television industry professionally for a short while. My career transi-tioned to working in Licensing, Rights & Clearances, and Strategic Partnerships in several different industries. My wife, Shari, and I joined Shomrei Torah when we moved to Wayne in 2011. We knew we wanted to be a part of a welcoming, Conservative congregation, and Shomrei Torah fit the bill. Our daughter, Laryn, very much enjoys Hebrew School. I am honored, and enjoy serving on the Board of Trustees. My family and I have celebrated many mitzvahs at Shomrei Torah already, and we look forward to celebrat-ing many more here.

BAT MITZVAH OF MAYA BETITO

Saturday, June 5, 2021 25 Sivan 5781

My Parshah is Sh’lach in the Book of Bamidbar/Numbers, and my Haftarah is from the Book of Joshua (Chapter two) which both discuss scouts who have been sent to assess the land of Israel, some of whom came back as advocates for the land. Like the scouts, I am an avid supporter of Israel and my love for the country and my strong roots in my faith inspire me daily. Over the past year, we have all had to overcome difficulties due to the pandemic and that is why my mitzvah project is centered on helping people dealing with mental health challenges brought on by COVID-19. I will be donating part of my Bat Mitzvah gifts to support this cause. I want to thank my Aba and Morah Beth who spent countless hours teaching and studying with me to get ready for my Bat Mitzvah. At times, it was a challenge, but it was one that made me better and closer to my Jewish roots. I also enjoyed spending the extra time with my Aba. His enthusiasm for my Bat Mitzvah has been fun to watch and resulted in a lot of family jokes. We are all now “kings and queens of the tropes.” A huge extended thank you to Rabbi Mark, my mom, April and my brother and sister who supported me throughout the whole process.

Shalom! My name is Maya Betito and I’m a 7th grader at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Fair Lawn. I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling to Aruba and Israel, and trying new foods. Family is very important to me and I find comfort in their love and support. I also enjoy spending time with my friends in my spare time.
