HAWAII Vol. 22 No. 32 ari Serving MCAS Kaneohe Bay, 1st MEB, Camp H.M. Smith and Marine Barracks. Mot. David Goold, commanding officer, VMFA-232, begins his take-off run while two other FM-18's watt for their turn. VMFA-232 left MCAS Kaneohe Bay Friday for MCAS El Toro, Calif., the squadron's new home. VMFA-232 says aloha to K-Bay By Sgt. Paul Schneider edwNsr The let Marine Expeditionary Brigade lost a major asset Friday as the F/A-18's of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron-232 departed MCAS Kaneohe Bay for the last time. The squadron was ordered to move to MCAS El Toro, Calif., as part of a restructuring of aviation assets within the Marine Corps. Before the pilots received their last flight brief at Kaneohe Bay, BGen. Richard F. Vercauteren, commanding general, 1st MEB, bid them farewell. "God speed and good luck," BGen. Vercauteren told the pilots. "I won't say goodbye because we may see each other again." Although VMFA-232 is the first F/A-18 squadron to leave Kaneohe Bay, it won't be the last. Eventually, the two remaining squadrons, VMFA-212 and VMFA- 235, will also transfer to MCAS El Toro. For squadron personnel, moving has been a challenge. The squadron recently returned from a six-month deployment to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. When VMFA- 232 returned from Japan, they were treated just like a temporary Trans Pac squadron. Moving the squadron's equipment wasn't too difficultsince they packed and shipped it in Japan, but moving households and personal goods in the short amount of time allotted was a challenge. While he was climbing into his F/A-18 to fly to California, LtCol. David F. Goold, commanding officer, VMFA-232, was still concerned about how his Marines were doing with their moving. He asked some of the ground crew if their moving was going all right. Most of the squadron personnel are moving with the squadron to MCAS El Toro, but for some, like Maj. John Ostrom, operations officer, VMFA-232, the departure meant the end of his association with the Red Devils. He flew one of the F/A-18s to MCAS El Toro, but returned. "I'm coming back to work for MAG-24 [Marine Aircraft Group- 24]" Ostrom said. He added he may end up at MCAS El Toro since he will be joining VMFA-235 when they deploy to Japan. When VMFA- 235 returns after six-months in Japan, it will also transfer to California. Moving the F/A-18 squadrons has left many here with a sense of loss. "I'm particularly sorrowful for one-third of the fighter attack 'squadrons to leave Kaneohe," BGen. Vercauteren said. "For once I have direct support and they are taking them away from me." The service group with highest percentage of participants will receive a substantial donation which will go to the service's relief society. Oahu Marines are encouraged to begin training for the 26.2 mile run. Active duty personnel pay only $2 to enter the race. The regular entry fee is $30. If anyone has already submitted an application and paid the $30 entry fee they will receive a refund from the Honolulu Marathon Association. Simply contact the association. The race organization makes this offering to the military to increase the level of participation. They also wish to channel funds back into military relief societies. This is one way of doing so, according to LtCol. Gil Loomis, Marine coordinator. Marines who complete the race will receive an attractive finisher T-shirt along with several pupus, fruits and drinks following the race. "The chance to run in the marathon is such a bargain at a cost of $2. The sponsors are willing to offer this to the military around the island as a way of saying thanks," said Loomis. "The cost of the T- shirts and all the food for the event well exceed the entry fee." The goal is to have 8 percent (approximately 720 Marines) of the total population of Marines on the island run. If the Marines achieve this goal they will also receive a monetary bonus which will go to the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society. 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade Commanding General BGen. R.F. Vercauteren, is scheduled to run in the event as part of "leadership by example" and to help raise badly needed money for the Navy/Marine Corps Relief. All services will compete to have the most runners complete the race. The service which has the most members complete the race will receive a substantial monetary donation from the marathon association. The remaining funds will be distributed based on the interservice standings following the race. "Our real goal is 1,000 Marines. We want to encourage as many Marines as possible to run for a worthy cause," said Loomis. "This will give them a sense of accomplishment and also gives them a chance to help the Navy/Marine Relief Society make some additional money. That is what Marines are all about, taking care of their own. We really want to maximise Marine participation." Applications for the race can be picked up at the Main Gym here or contact SSgt. Although he did eventually come up with several other benefits of being back, it may be surprising that he and many other Marines said they would go back if asked. "Doing a live mission really changed my whole attitude toward the Marine Corps, United Nations and United States. It made me more respectful," explained Sgt. Steven Berry, an assistant analysis chief for the detachment. He spent two months in Somalia. While the detachment was performing its mission, the Marines saw a lot of changes in the conditions there - both good and bad. "At times it was hard, but it was getting better. There were a lot more facilities for morale," Doyle explained. "It was heating up a little, but other than that it was good." The Marines mainly operated from Mogadishu, but some also got out to other areas like Baidoa. Getting used to the extent of destruction in the country took some time. "Imagine taking a third world country and destroying it with millions of bullet holes," Doyle said about the destruction of the cities. "It's going to take a long time for them to get back." Berry said Somalia was still pretty bad. "I felt more secure in Saudi Arabia than in Somalia," Berry said. "We didn't know where the enemy was, or who was friendly and who wasn't. The threat was minimal, but anything could happen." All the Marines liked the experience of working with the United Nations and other forces. Paul Schneider Stall War The presence of lead paint in some older houses on base has raised some concern among residents of FY65 housing as painters have begun to remove the flaking paint. Although the contractor removing the paint and repainting the buildings is required to adhere to strict safety procedures in order to minimize any hazards, air station officials and the Army Corps of Engineers are watching the work very closely. "This is more of a safety precaution than a hazard," explained Jared St. John, the Kaneohe area housing manager. In an additional step to ease residents' concerns, the Branch Medical Clinic is offering testing for lead exposure. The work began in the FY65 area housing, which is mainly on Cochran Street, July 26 and is expected to last for three to four months. Air sampling has already been done - and will continue - in the area. The samples were found to be well within safety limits. St. John explained the painting was supposed to start several months ago, but the contract was held up and renegotiated to insure proper protection for workers and residents. The presence of lead in paint was common prior to 1977. In addition, china and glasswarewith a bright glazing often contained lead. Once the potential dangers of lead were discovered, its use in products has been very limited in the United States. The contractor is scheduled to remove and repaint 17 buildings. The housing office expects funding to repaint 25 additional buildings in the area by the end of the year. At the July 29 Neighborhood Quality of Life Board meeting, Navy Capt. Elizabeth Barker, family nurse practitioner at the Branch Medical Clinic, explained the health concerns. "We understand that there are a lot of really legitimate concerns about the effect of the scraping," Barker said. "The clinic does have a very active lead screening program for children. In fact, by DoD policy, children are now tested yearly until they are six years old." The required testing, which began in June, is done during a child's school physical or well- child check-up or at parental During their time in Somalia request. the Marines really learned how to improvise. "The Neighborhood Quality of Life Board has witnessed an increased concern about child safety and basic traffic safety awareness," said Napu Thompson, the director of Joint Safety. "In the past three years there has been a steady increase in personnel aboard the station. That means heavier traffic, more children, and a need for heightened awareness." According to the Joint Safety Center the leading cause of death of children 14 years of age and younger is traffic injuries 45 percent as vehicle passengers; 45 percent as pedestrians and 10 percent as cyclists. Drivers must be especially watchful in housing areas and routes children use when See Safety, A-8 The test the clinic uses, which is the most accurate, requires blood to be drawn from the child. If anyone wants to have their child tested, they can call the clinic for an appointment. For the test the clinic uses, the United States Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends further screening for a level greater to or equal to 10. The clinic monitors all children whose blood level is greater than five. There are no dangerous accumulations of lead in the body at levels of five or below. Since the meeting, the clinic has sought to inform people of the dangers of lead and some steps they can take to avoid any problems. The Clinic has handouts available about lead. In addition, Barker has been featured on a health segment for the station cable's "Windward Review." The program will air today and Friday at approximately 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on station cable channel 2. Barker explained that lead exposure is known to cause problems in children but the effects of lead is preventable and may be reversible. There are things parents can do to decrease problems with lead for their children. "Make sure that their diets are high in calcium and iron. That means eating dark green and leafy vegetables and milk or formula every day," Barker explained. "Lead is absorbed less if children have a full stomach than if they have an empty stomach." She added, "remember to keep your children from playing in areas where there may be lead exposure. You do not want them playing near a highway where there are a lot of toxic fumes or playing in areas where they will pick up paint chips." Station Commanding Officer Col. R.R. Crawford is very concerned that residents on Cochran Street are aware of what the contractors are doing. He has already made trips to the area to see the work and what is being done to protect occupants. His main concern is to make everyone aware of the work so they can take precautions to prevent any problems. Currently there are minimal hazards from the work and they want it to stay that way. LtGen. Stackpole speaks on 'Core Values' to all

Our motto, Semper Fide lis, reminds us that Marines are faithful to other Marines. Our long tradition of never leaving anyone in time of need must be reemphasized as we are accountable to one another in good times as well as bad. This message re-emphasizes responsibility for one another in peace as well as combat.

Responsibility for troops is a fundamental of Marine Corps leadership. However, responsibility for others transcends the chain of command. Marines and sailors have an obligation to each other at all times, both subordinate and superior.

Responsibility requires us to make difficult choices and appropriate responses. Racially demeaning jokes, discrimination, sexually explicit remarks and assaults have absolutely no place in the Naval Service. The few who practice this unacceptable behavior must

be identified and educated. Knowing the difference between what is acceptable and not acceptable is a key to responsible behavior. Encouragement and concern for one another is always acceptable. Obscene remarks, racial name calling and demeaning behavior are never acceptable. Understanding when to confront such behavior is vital while keeping silent on injustice is wrong. Confronting breaches of common decency, as well as lapses in military courtesy, is the duty of all Marines and sailors.

Responsibility requires tisk listen to one another. Never be too busy to listen to the concerns and understand the needs of Marines and sailors. Suicide talk and gestures-even in a crucial context-are a cry for help. Often a concerned listener is crucial in helping a Marine or sailor who believes "no one cares." In the vast majority of

suicides, friends, co-workers and family members later recount hearing the deceased make a life threatening statement. Responsibility requires that we not discount self destructive talk. But, instead make the. appropriate response by reporting it to the command, medical personnel or the chaplain. Finally, knowing the personal situation of our Marines and sailors is an absolute requirement for professionals.

In a fire fight, implicit trust in the Marine in charge as well as the Marines on your flanks is vital. Maintaining that trust in peace and on the battlefield is our responsibility. I count on each of you to do that. It is the right thing to do. Semper Fidelis-

U.S. pushing for air strikes ai The United States agreed to let the United Nations decide when and if air strikes are needed in Bosnia-Herzego vina.

Although the announcement has taken some pressure off Serb leaders to pull out of the mountains overlooking Sarajevo, the call-to- arms by NATO seems to have had some effect.

The Serbs have begun moving their forces from the mountains, but it is still uncertain what the moves will lead to.

The United States had been pushing for NATO to authorize air strikes, which it did, but they deferred authority to launch them to the United Nations.

The forceful stance by NATO against the Serbs began when the Serbs seized control of the mountains overlooking Sarajevo. The loss of the Mount Igman and Mount Bjelasnica to the Serbs virtually assured the end of the besieged city.

The Serbs now control virtually all of Bosnia.

If the United Nations decides air strikes are necessary, Marine F/A-18's now operating in Italy could be invovled.

Interceptions resume in the Arabian Gulf III A combined U.S. Navy/Coast Guard/Kuwaiti boarding team from USS Gallery (FFG 26) made six successful hoardings in four days during the end of July, marking the first maritime interceptions in the Northern Arabian Gulf in support of United Nations sanctions against Iraq in approximately 18 months. Teams boarded three tugs and the merchant vessels they were towing.

The Horizon, towed by the tug Shaiboub was boarded July 27.

This week around the world

Other merchant vessels being towed by the tug, were boarded July 28. The merchant vessels were en route from the Port of Basrah, Iraq, to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The ships were allowed to proceed after boarding officers determined neither ship was carrying cargo and that all necessary paperwork was in order. The hoardings were incident-free.

The merchant vessels are three of many ships trapped in the Port of Basrah since the early 80's Iran-Iraq War, according to U.S.

Coast Guard Capt. Robert D. Innes, the coordinator of the maritime interception operations for U.S. Naval Forces Central Command. "Because the vessels stayed in port so long," Capt. Innes explained, "it was hard to tell the condition of the ships."

"The most dangerous part of the job is checking the cargo, not the threat from terrorism," said Lt.j.g. Andrew Dutton, team leader of a Baltimore, Md., U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment, and seasoned inspector in the

Arabian Gulf and Red Sea. 4 Soldiers killed According to Dutton, the ,

merchant shippers are usually very in Somalia cooperative. They know we respect their right to engage in legitimate and free trade, and that we're here to facilitate marine commerce as well as to prevent unauthorized trade between Iraq and the world community."

More ships are expected to be towed from Basrah over the next few months. Navy and Coast Guard sailors will be on hand to conduct hoardings when necessary.

al Four United States soldiers were killed in Somalia Sunday when their HMMWV hit a land mine in Mogadishu.

The explosion began an ambush by soldiers believed to be loyal to Somali warlord Mahammed Aidid.

President Clinton vowed to take appropriate action against those responsible for the attack.

The attack led to the first death of Americans since the United Nations took over command of the operation. It was the worst loss by American forces there since Operation Restore Hope began in December.

Attacks in Somalia have become more frequent and deadly. A total of 39 UN peacekeepers have been killed in Somalia in two months. The worst attack was in June, when 24 Pakistanis were killed in an ambush.

The latest attack may lead to a reexamination of the United States role in Somalia.

U.S. stops Chinese ship GI The United States tried to prevent a Chinese ship which it suspects of carrying the raw materials needed to make mustard and nerve gas to Iran.

Navy vessels have been shadowing the ship since it entered the Arabian Gulf and have prevented it from docking.

China has denied that it is shipping chemicals to Iran. Tensions between the United States and China have increased over the allegations that China has been shipping dangerous military technology to volatile areas of the world.

Earthquake rocks Guam 5) An earthquake measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale rocked Guam Sunday.

The earthquake was one of the strongest this century. There were no deaths and few injuries. Damages are estimated at $90 million.

Scientists believe the reason there was not more damage was because the epicenter was located deep beneath the ocean.

The U.S. territory is home to five military bases.

Boater wants his mask and snorkel

back, please Letter to the Editor: Boaters are a strange breed. We trust and depend on other

boaters. Well, it was this trust that prompted me to loan my $50 mask and snorkel to a fellow boater from KMCAS. He had lost a gold bracelet June 26 at the Sand Bar in Kaneohe Bay, and wanted to look for it. Since I had to leave before he found the bracelet, I left the mask and snorkel with him and asked him to drop it off for me at the office at the Kaneohe Yacht Club.

I feel better believing that the borrower forgot where to drop them off, rather than believing the worse. After several weeks of waiting, I'm still hopeful that the Aloha spirit will prevail. So, as a friendly reminder, I'm requesting the Marine who borrowed the set to drop it off at the KYC office, or even to the editor of the Hawaii Marine, (building 215, third deck). Some day another person may need to borrow it.

Having fixed wing assets assigned directly to a brigade was unique in the Marine Corps. MAG- 24 is the largest and only permanent composite Marine Aircraft Group in the Marine Corps.

Beside the physical loss of the squadron to the group and brigade, both also lost a squadron with a rich history.

The Red Devils are known as the Marine Corps' most decorated, and oldest active duty squadron. It was formed Sept. 1, 1925, at Naval Air Station San Diego, Calif. The squadron's first commanding officer, 2dLt. Clayton C. Jerome, took to the skies in a Vought VE-7 single-seat biplane.

Shortly after formation, the squadron deployed for the first time to the western Pacific.

Over the years the squadron has changed its name, location and aircraft, but one thing which never changed was its legacy of always being where it was needed.

During World War II, the squadron participated in campaigns at Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Bougainville, Bismark Archipelago, Northern Solomons, and Okinawa.

being formed at Kaneohe Bay, the Red Devils received orders to transfer there in 1954.

In December 1966 the squadron was ordered to Vietnam for its first tour there. During 290 days, the squadron flew 5,785 sorties, 7,273 flight hours and dropped 6,221 tons of ordnance.

The squadron left Vietnam in 1967 and was eventually stationed at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. The

Red Devils returned to Vietnam for a short time in 1969.

In April 1972, the squadron made an urgent return to Vietnam to fight against a massive North Vietnamese offensive. The Red Devils were the last Marine squadron to leave the Vietnam conflict in September 1973.

The squadron returned to Kaneohe Bay in 1977 and didn't get the call to arms again until

1990. During 41 days of intense combat during Operation Desert Storm, VMFA-232 flew more than 740 combat missions and more than 1,390 'combat hours.

Throughout its history, VMFA- 232 has been flying lead - setting an example for other squadrons to follow. As a chapter closes on its history in Hawaii, the squadron has set a precedence for the two remaining squadrons to follow when it is their turn to move.

Community Drug Awareness Program rolls on

Safety from A-1

traveling to and from school. Obey all traffic signs and be

. particularly alert when nearing crosswalks. Slow down when kids are in the area, don't assume they see you.

The Provost Marshals Office wants motorists to keep in mind that it is against the law to pass a bus that is loading or dropping off children, no matter what direction they are traveling. Passing a stopped bus will result in the loss of your driving privileges on station for 30 days.

Also, motorists are reminded ' to pay attention to speed limits. The speed limit on Mokapu Blvd. , between Harris and "G" Streets is 25 mph.

Children must be in a seat belt while toddlers and infants under three years old are required to be in the proper car seat. It is illegal aboard the station to have passengers riding in the back of a pickup truck if it has no shell.

Parents are responsible for the conduct and safety of their children. Teach them proper street crossing techniques and to be aware of automobiles, trucks and bicycles when crossing the streets. Explain clearly to your children the meaning of traffic signals, walk

and don't-walk signs and automobile turn signals.

If your children will be walking to school, tell them to try to walk with a group and avoid busy streets as much as possible. Take the time to physically walk the route you wish your child to take. This way, the child learns the safest route and you will know the route in case of an emergency.

If your child rides a bike to school, make sure your child knows the traffic laws. Bicyclists should ride ,with the traffic, not against it. Also, if he/she is riding with a group it should be in single file. If possible, parents should try to insure that their children have the proper safety equipment. Although not mandatory, bike helmets and pads decrease the chances of serious injury if there is an accident.

If your child rides a bus, then he/she should never walk behind or along the side of the bus. Teach them to walk at least five feet in front of the bus and to look both ways before crossing the street. Remind them to properly seat themselves when the bus is in motion and not to play or throw things while riding in the bus.

Make this a ' safe and enjoyable season by observing the basic traffic safety guidelines and also by properly demonstrating and instructing your children in those rules.

CDAP: Providing positive, impact

Marines from Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe Bay conveyed a clear message for students to stay in school, stay away from drugs, stay physically fit and set productive goals.

These are the four main goals of the Community Drug Awareness Program (CDAP), and were highly emphasized by Marines in their recent visit to 100 students from Honaunau and Konawaena Elementary Schools gathered at Kailua Park on the big island.

Marines from Headquarters a,nd Headquarters Squadron and Station Operations Maintenance Squadron arranged displays of first aid; communications; and cover and concealment for the students to view. A CH-53 helicopter from Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron-463 was also on display.

(Above) Capt. Mark Erb, the aircraft commander, points out a few of the helicopter's characteristics while a little girl (right) tries to reach out and touch someone on a PRC-77 field phone.

'463 safety standdown a success By Sgt. Paul Schneider WO New

Safety standdowns are routine for Marines and sailors, but when Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron-463 was scheduled to standdown Aug. 2, the squadron's safety office tried to make it anything but routine.

After a typical morning of briefings, the pilots and aircrew spent the afternoon in Kaneohe Bay practicing the skills they would need if they were ever forced down in the water.

"We wanted to increase safety awareness and give them honest- to-goodness safety training," explained Capt. Jesse Wrice, safety

officer, HMH-463. The training consisted of water

survival training, which included being dropped in the middle of Kaneohe Bay by boat and having a Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopter from Station Operations and Maintenance Squadron hoist them out of the water and into the hovering HH-46.

In addition, the Marines also had to swim to two inflated rafts and get into them - which they found was no easy task. They also received classes on extended sea water survival and the SV-2B survival vest aviators wear.

"This was real good training - some of the best training we've done since I've been here," said Cpl. Shawn Fry, a crew chief with

HMH-963. "This sets your mind at ease. If you ever crash and have to do this, you will know what to do; especially when we are carrying passengers and they are looking at you to know what to do."

Although the training wasn't new to any of the Marines or sailors, most had not done the raft or water survival training for several years.

Wrice explained that the water survival training is supposed to be conducted every four years and the raft training every three years. Since the squadron flies over a lot of water, he felt the training would be perfect for the safety standdown.

Of course, the survival training also had the benefit of helping the SAR Marines and sailors by allowing them to simulate a rescue.

"All too often you get compla- cent as you do your job. This has been a chance to refocus our thinking," said LtCol. Terry Gor- don, HMH-463 commanding of- ficer.

Gordon said the standdown was one of the better ones he has done and it will likely be a template of future safety standdowns.

"Anything you can do helps once a mishap occurs," Gordon explained. "Since most of our flying is over water, you can expect to see this kind of training on a regular basis."

Swimming is fun, biking is fun and running is fun, but putting all three together translates into pain. More than 300 entrants participated in the 11th Annual Windward Triathlon, Sunday with some Marines finishing near the top of their age category.

The Marines had several fine athletes participating in the event hosted by the KMCAS. Steve Manning finished third in the 30- 34 year-old category with a time of 3:36:18. Randy Gang le finished second in the 50-54 year-old division with a time of 4:23:13.

The winner of the competition surprised everyone including race

officials. Nobuo Kitazato passed the expected winner, Brent Imonen, with less than a quarter of a mile left in the race. Imonen battled with Mike McMahon throughout most of the race, with Kitazato a substantial distance behind until the final few miles of the run. Kitazato closed the gap and went ahead of the two to finish first with a time of 3:23:28. Imonen took second, while McMahon finished third

Other Marines included veteran triathlete and Ironman competitor Gil Loomis, Rick Jones, Steve Kahl and female competitor Loretta Vandenberg.

"I had my best time in the triathlon today but I feel I could have done better," Loomis said. "I was bothered by cramps for several

miles of the run." The race conditions varied from

intermittent-to-hard rain to warm, sunny conditions. Several racers encountered problems during the bike race. Rain slick roads caused several accidents in the Waimanalo area. Some racers were able to continue while others had to stop because of damage to their bikes.

The race was comprised of a one-mile ocean swim, followed by a 50-mile bike ride and a 10-mile run to the finish line at Dewey Square.

The race began in the waters of Kaneohe Bay to the sound of the "Jaws" theme. After exiting the waters competitors changed into their biking gear and cycled to Hawaii Kai, returning to the air station. The 10-mile run was

conducted on the air station. Many competitors were happy

just to finish, while some, like Scott Schumacher, decided to turn a cartwheel over the finish line.

The event served as a qualifier for the upcoming Ironman competition on the Big Island in October.

Among the volunteers who helped with the race were nine lifeguards, eight members of the Provost Marshal's office and more than 70 volunteers who served as course marshals and supplied competitors with water or sponges.

"The help we received from the volunteers was tremendous," said John Magnus, athletic director here. "We had a real good response from the Marines and we really appreciated their help."

Marine returns after successful wrestling competition By Cpl. Aaron Marlin Sports Editor'

A Marine from Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron-24 recently completed a highly successful tour of competitive wrestling, returning with several medals and awards.

Chris Vike returned to Hawaii last week after six months of wrestling at the national and international level. Vike, who is presently ranked seventh in the nation for Greco-Roman 180-pound class, began this tour in Quantico, Va., with the All-Marine team. He finished the tour at the Olympic Festival in San Antonio, coming home with the Gold Medal.

The Stoughton, Wisconsin native had barely finished checking in with his unit when he left for the All-Marine Wrestling Camp at Quantico. Vike returned to the camp for the second year and wasted no time in showing his abilities to the wrestlers and coaches.

"This year we had to shuffle the team around a little so that we would be able to compete with the other services," said the 23-year- old. "I competed in the 198-pound class, which is the weight class above the one I usually compete in."

Vike made the most of the situation, placing third in the Freestyle division and second in the Greco Roman division overall.

"The competition at the Armed Services is really tough because most of the nation's top wrestlers

are in the military," said Vike. tournaments, accordi to Vike. "This makes for some real good / "The Concord tou mont is competition." because it is e of the

The schedule did not lighten as best international tournaments around," Vike said. "This makes it very prestigous in the international wrestling circles."

The solidly built and muscular Marine was the only American to place in the competition, taking

Vike went to New York for the National Clubs Tournament. He placed second overall. At this national competition he was recognized as the "Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament."

The next competition was the University Nationals in Chicago. This was perhaps the most difficult tournament for Vike as he drew Olympic wrestler Dan Henderson for the first match. The competition served as a qualifier for the Pan-Am and Olympic Festivals. After losing the first match to Henderson, Vike wrestled nine times in one day to finish in fifth place.

Wanting to brush up on some of his techniques, he then traveled to Georgia and trained with members of the Army team.

His next stop was the U.S. Open Nationals in Las Vegas. The 12- year wrestling veteran placed seventh overall and wrestled eight times in the three-day tournament. Defeating the number three-ranked wrestler during the tournament may also raise his standings in the upcoming Associated Press standings.

The Concord Calif. International Tournament was next. Wrestlers from 14 countries including Russia, Japan, Canada and Korea competed. The tournament is considered to be one of the more prestigious international

eighth overall. Following the international

tournament, Via took ?'the opportunity to wrestle in some smaller tournaments in Maryland and Virginia, to remain sharp for the upcoming Olympic Festival.

The road to the Gold at the Olympic Festival in San Antonio was not an easy one. Vike had

spent a lot of time in weight training and not as much on the mat. He encountered difficulty when the competition started, due to the heat and humidity in the southern Texas town.

"I struggled early in the competition and was somewhat sluggish and fatigued due to the humidity and heat. As I wrestled more I progressively got stronger in each match," Vike said. "By the time I reached the final match I was at my peak performance level."

Winning the Olympic Festival is a strong step for the highly rated wrestler. It helps pave the way to his main goal of capturing the gold at the '96 Olympics in Atlanta

"I have dreamed of going to the Olympics and capturing the gold for myself and my hometown of Stoughton, Wis.," Vike reflected. "There are two guys from there who have gone to the Olympics and come back with the silver medal in wrestling. I want to bring home the gold."

Wrestling is just one of many sports in which Vike has excelled. He also played football and baseball. As a sophomore in high school, he was an All-State baseball player. Despite his excellence in other sports, he decided to focus on wrestling.

One of the main reasons Vike enjoys wrestling is because it is an individual sport. He regards it as "if I lose it's my fault and no one else's."

Vike, who joined the Marine Corps in 1989, has been helped by many people in reaching his high level of wrestling performance. One of those people is Andy Rein, silver medalist in the 1984 Olympics.

"I idolized him and always wanted to be like him," Vike said.

Another important person that has helped support Vike has been his father, Marvin. In his early days of wrestling his father invested a lot of time and money to further Vike 's

"My dad bought me a wrestling mat when I was 12 and he used to work with me on moves and different techniques. He didn't know a lot about wrestling before we started doing it, but he took the time to learn with me," said the two-time All-Marine wrestler. "I really resr4ct my father a lot for taking the time and spending the money to make me a better wrestler."

The last, but perhaps most important person who has contributed to his success is his wife Lisa.

"She is the most supportive of wives regarding wrestling. She often makes sure I'm working out and maintaining the proper conditioning for competition," Vike said. "She has been the strongest inspiration for me."

Everyone has a dream or goal which they wish to obtain. For Chris Vike he has moved one step closer to the ultimate goal of the Olympic Gold.

From the cheap seats: A sports commentary By Cpl. Aaron Martin tools Idiot

Some friendly reminders for the armchair quarterback

We have waited since the early weeks of February for the day to come. Football is back on the tube and every man is refluffing the cushion of his recliner, cleaning out the cooler and checking the batteries on the remote - to priorities in preparing for an afternoon of football.

Based upon many years of experience as a spectator, let me offer a few little hints to the men in regards to watching the manly sport of football.

Football is truly for the rough and tough. Every time I see a game I want to go out and buy some power tools from Sears. In my younger days, I would finish watching the game and then go out with friends and replay the great plays (particularly the big tackles). AB the years have gone by wisdom and better judgement (or perhaps laziness) have kept me from those young foolish endeavors. So guys, remember you're not as young as you used to be. Your body may

not cooperate as it once did, so be careful. The next issue is that treasure which is far

above any earthly possession... your spouse. For many of us the wife is going to be the only hindrance to a successful season of armchair quarterbacking.

Men should use careful judgement in dealing with the spouse. Don't pour on the charm too much or the wife will become suspicious. Your routine should not change much from the norm. However, volunteering to go to the store for milk or something is a sure way to rack up some points. Trust me men you will need some brownie points. Bring home a flower on Friday and take her to dinner on Saturday. It may be just enough to persuade her to let you sit in front of the tube for five hours on Sunday and three on Monday night.

Some of you are going to disregard my suggestions. I know in the end you will wish you had listened. Sure, you have endured the sappy love story movies and tearjerkers for several months. You think you will be given the chance to watch the game. Think again.

This same woman who you endured through those sometimes boring and uninteresting events will strategically schedule the housekeeping duties to occur simultaneously to the big game.

Shopping, at which almost every woman is a card carrying professional, is handled for many months without your help. It is suddenly a task which cannot be completed without her man by her side. Wives consider Sunday or Monday evening the ideal times to shop because there isn't much of a crowd. The reason is because everyone else planned ahead and bought the wife some flowers.

If you have children, don't forget them either. Playing with the kids is a true joy in life and should never be neglected. They sometimes have the same instinctive behavior as their mom. The one time you want to just relax is the very moment when they must demonstrate their technique of turning cartwheels. Unfortunately, they are just a little too close to the coffee table, which leads to an afternoon at the medical center. Emergency rooms of course will show repeats of Beauty and the Beast or Fern Gully instead of the big game.

The solution to this dilemma is simple. For a minimal cost of a Ninja Turtle or another action figure the child can easily he occupied throughout the game. Remember to give it to them just prior to kickoff. This will help occupy their time while you watch the game. Two action figures per week is a cost of less than $10.

In adding up the cost of the action figures at 20 weeks (including play-offs and Super Bowl) the cost for the little ones is around $200. Though the price may be a little steep, remember guys, we are talking football.

The buy-off for the the wife is steeper as a rose and bottle of wine would probably cost approximately $15. Remember wives aren't cheap. The big cost will be dinner. That's another $20 a week bringing the total to $36 per week for the wife alone. If you have a wife and one child, the cost will be around $900 for the season. If you have more than one child, you have moved into the four-digit bracket.

Some football fans are very fortunate and have spouses who love the sport. They have no problems. The game can be some of the quality time that every relationship needs. If you're one of those, count your blessings.

To all of you single guys, a word of advice. Don't get married until the off-season otherwise the season will be a wipeout. There is nothing worse than a woman starving for your attention right as the quarterback is in the pocket looking at his receiver 35 yards down field.

As for me, forget the expensive cost of wining and dining. I will just make sure I set my VCR.

SPICE of life! By Maggie Wham

Editor's Note: Spice of Life is a column for military spice (plural of spouse). You are invited to write to Maggie with any questions you have concerning military life. Please address your letters to: Joint Public Affairs Office, MCAS (Hawaii Marine, Spice of Life), Box 63003, MCAS Kaneohe Bay, HI 96863-3003.

Dear Maggie, I live on Cochran Street and

my house is scheduled to be repainted. I'm really worried because they told us that the old paint has lead in it and that they're going to have to scrape it off before the new paint is put on. My building is really old. The windows don't fit right and the doors are warped. The dust from the lead paint is certain to get in my house. Why can't they move us out before they do this kind of dangerous work? My kids don't need this, and neither do I.

Paint Me Red

Dear Paint, You're not the only one

concerned about the lead paint. Several people from your area were complaining about it at the Neighborhood Quality of Life Board meeting. The base

commander was there to respond to them. He agreed that it was a serious concern and promised to look into it. The painters apparently are stripping four units at a time- a process that involves sealing all the windows and doors with plastic and duct tape on the side they are stripping. It means that the occupants will have to use the opposite door to go in and out and, of course, lose the breeze.

There aren't any easy solutions to the problem, but a number of alternatives are being considered. Once a decision is made, you'll be notified as soon as possible. Meanwhile, any parent concerned about the lead in his child can get the child tested at the clinic. It will involve drawing blood, but the clinic promises to notify parents as quickly as possible if any lead shows up in the testing.

Sorry I couldn't do more.

Maggie

Dear Maggie, I'm 13 years old and I want

to know why the skateboard ramps closed. Also, how come we can't ride our bikes on the ramps? We have just as much right to use them as skateboarders do.

Superbiker

Dear Superbiker, I hear your frustration. It's

tough to have something you like taken away, even temporarily.

To answer your first question: The ramps were closed because the men who designed them never expected them to see so much use. After about four weeks, one of the ramps developed a hole in the plywood. Right now, they are repairing it with a much heavier plywood and a new coat of fiberglass. It will re-open as soon as repairs are made.

Using bikes on the ramps is another problem all together. First, they would have to be cleared for use. The area is very small and bikes might not fit safely on the ramps, like they do in the hanger at Hickam. Second, they would have to be given separate hours from the skateboarders. Mixing boards and bikes would never work.

All is not lost, however. The base commander says that he has no objections to use as long as it is safe. He has his people looking in to the possibility and he'll make a decision based on what's safe and best for the base. It doesn't mean "yes," but it also doesn't mean "no." Try to have a little patience, Superbiker. Ride safe!

Maggie
