POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA, Hawaii -- Okinawa's 1st Stinger Battery, Marine Aircraft Group-18, from Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, tested its new ANfrWQ-1 Avenger Air Defense Weapons Systems recently at Pohakuloa Training Area.

After receiving 30 Avengers by Jan. 1, the battery wanted to test its new technology in the field, according to Maj. Steven M. Lesher, lstStingBatt commanding officer. "This gives us a lot of new capabili-

ties," said Lesher. We now have a 24-hour weapons system. We can find targets at night and engage them as well."

Stinger Marines came to the island to fire because live ordnance is restricted in Okinawa, according to Capt. Scott F. Knapp, operations officer. The unit spent several weeks at PTA breaking in its new equipment.

April has been proclaimed by BGen. D.F. Bice, commanding general, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, as the Month of the Military Child and Child Abuse Prevention Month for the base.

BGen. Bice is encouraging families to not only take this time to increase their awareness of what constitutes child abuse but also learn how to prevent it.

Child abuse is a complex and growing problem in our society where, according to statistics from the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse, more than 2.5 million child abuse cases are reported annu- ally, hundreds of which may result in fatalities. Unfortunately, the military is not immune to this tragedy.

Although the Department of Defense has programs to prevent child abuse and child neglect and to treat victims and their families, the ultimate source of help is community awareness, explained Gail Kiefer, Family Advocacy Specialist, MCB Hawaii. The Marine Corps Family Advocacy Program and Family Service

Center are starting this special month with a Blue Ribbon campaign. The blue ribbon is a reminder to protect, respect, and value our Marine and Navy children. Families are being asked to wear the ribbon and to share its meaning with others.

"The best method of preventing child abuse is through education," said Kiefer.

According to the National Council on Child Abuse and Family Violence, the term child abuse can be defined as any behavior directed toward a child by a parent, guardian, care giver, other family member or other adult that endangers or impairs a child's physical or emotional health and development.

"In many cases, parents don't intentionally set out to hurt their children, but ignorance about better disciplinary methods sometimes leads to abusive behavior towards their children," explained Owen Norton,

Breaking ground VIP's from the base and surrounding community took part in Friday's ground- breaking ceremony at the site of the future Marine Corps Exchange Complex. The exchange is expected to open the summer of 1997. This is one of the buildings of the "SuperBlock" which will also include a child development center and a string of mini-malls between the exchange and commissary.

MCB Hawaii wins DoD's top award Aaron Martin Menowng .air

Marine Corps Base Hawaii added another mark of achievement to its ongoing environmental conservation programs by winning the Department of Defense Environmental Security Award.

The installation took first place in Natural Resources Conservation and was the only Marine Corps installation to be recognized at the DoD level.

Dr. Diane Drigot, of the base environmental department, was recognized with an honorable mention for her significant contributions.

"This is great for the base," said Maj. Paul D'Antonio, environmental department director. "This encompasses three years of work by the staff and is fitting recognition for their efforts."

The programs in place are part of a pro-active effort to care for the natural and cultural resources the military is charged with protecting.

"It is our job to protect and preserve the natural resources," said D'Antonio. "The base has done a tremendous job of utilizing funds for these programs. Dr. Drigot, Maj. George Wheeler [former environmen-

tal director] and the staff laid out a plan which is top of the line."

Some of the programs for which the base was recognized include the Wildfire Management programs at the Nu'upia Ponds and the Booby Bird Colony at the base rifle range.

Their accomplishments also include the development of a data base program known as the Environmental Geographic Information System, which provides pertinent environ-

mental information about the entire Mokapu peninsula. Much of the funds for these programs were developed through the Legacy Funds, which Hawaii's U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye was a driving force in imple- menting. Management of these

funds, the experience of the staff members such as Dr. Drigot's 14 years here, and active initiatives of these programs were key to receiving top honors, according to D'Antonio.

"We are very fortunate to have the resources in our charge," said D'Antonio, who is one of only six environmental engineers in the Marine Corps. "I feel confident in the near future some of the other programs, such as recycling and environmental cleanups will also receive recognition for the base's efforts."

Hawaii Marine, staff place in 1995 Thomas Jefferson awards CPAO

The Hawaii Marine newspaper and three individuals were recognized by the Marine Corps for outstanding performance in print journalism and broadcasting for the 1995 Thomas Jefferson awards. The Hawaii Marine in competition

with other civilian enterprise newspapers Corps-wide took the third place award amidst some stiff competition. First place went to the Quantico Sentry at Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Va., with second place awarded to The Scout at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

In the print category Capt. J.C. Milliman, Public Affairs Officer, MCB Hawaii, took first place Corps-wide in Category H: Commentaries. The two commentaries submitted, "What's the big deal about all these old vets?" and "Violence: not a mark of real man,"

will be forwarded by the Division of Public Affairs, Headquarters Marine Corps to the Department of Defense Thomas Jefferson Awards scheduled for May 13-17.

Combat Correspondent Sgt. Jesse Faleris, CPAO, received a third place award for Category K Feature, News or Sports Picture Stories for his "Celebration of July 4th" and "Our flags unfurled..." photographic pre- sentations.

In the broadcasting category, SSgt. Aiko Brum, CPAO, who served as the primary contributor in Category H: Television Information Program took third place. The television program "Inside Marine Corps Base Hawaii" was a joint effort of CPAO and Training Audio Visual Support Center here, with significant contributions from Cpl. Brad Purdy and Cpl. James Fiske of TAVSC who provided the technical support for the

Every Clime and Place Communicators vital link to Internal Look '96 CAMP BLANDING, Fla. - The first people on the ground in north central Florida for exercise Internal Look 96 were perhaps the most important.

These unsung -- or "unstrung" --

heroes hit the ground running Feb. 20, and literally worked around the clock to establish "the most sophisti- cated field communication system ever installed in the Marine Corps," according to Col. Nicholas J. Hoffer, United States Central Command Current Operations Officer. This system had to be in place by the kick-off of IL 96, which began March 20 here at this sprawling Army National Guard base.

Since their arrival, these hard-working communication experts, or comm guys as they are commonly called, have achieved a number of "firsts" for Marine Forces Central Command.

Perhaps the most significant first was connecting a deployed Marine headquarters to the highly complex DoD "Global Command and Control System" - called GCCS or "Geeks" by its users. The GCCS system allows forces to easily tap into a massive array of information needed to perform a mission. 'lb support GCCS and other new sys-

tems, Marines like Cpl. Russell Page and Sgt. Irwin Collier, both from B Co., 7th Communications Battalion, installed more than 250 phones connected by some 21,200 feet of wire. They also installed more than 8,400

feet of fiber optic cable, 11,200 feet of pulse code modulated cable, and 4,200 feet of coaxial cable to connect every phone, computer and communication system necessary to allow the MarCent staff to operate in a tactical environment.

The coaxial cable tied more than 75 desktop computers and laptops together, ensuring IL 96 provided the maximum benefit to MarCent partici- pants and allowing them to communicate via electronic mail with higher headquarters and components.

Other firsts achieved by the Marines included the first-time use of the "Trojan Spirit" intelligence system, the first employment of an IDNX (state-of-the-art commercial multi- plexer) backbone transmission system, first exercise of the Marine Communications Control Center concept, and the first-time establishment of a unit homepage in the field, which allowed the staff to surf the World- Wide Web.

IL 96 was also the first exercise where the 222d and 232d CCBS Communications Support Units of the Air National Guard supported MarForPac/MarCent in accordance with standing agreements.

More than 120 communicators came together at IL 96 to put this system in place, including 26 Marines from the Hawaii-based 7th Comm. Bn., and 41 from Camp Pendleton, Calif.-based 9th Comm. Bn. The Marine commu-

nicators were reinforced by 22 airmen from the 222d Air National Guard from Costa Mesa, Calif. The entire effort was choreographed

by the MarCent G-6 section, which deployed 19 Marines to coordinate, plan and lead the communication effort. They were joined by an additional 14 personnel from the Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity, who provided systems and application software to help make the Marine Corps' IL 96 effort a class act. "In the beginning, it was awkward

working with the other units because

everybody has their own way of doing things," said SSgt. Felix Coleman, B Co., 7th Comm. Bn. "We went through a period of just watching how everyone operated, but we worked together very well."

The communicator's job during IL 96 was a daunting one. They had to make it "as easy as possible for the Marines to get their job done," said Coleman, which meant not only laying miles of cable, but also laboring in shifts so work went on around the clock, in weather varying from freezing rain

at night to 90 degrees in the afternoon.

During the exercise, the communicators maintained all communications systems and, when things went wrong, made instant repairs. To do this, a help desk was available for users to report any minor problems, and trouble-shooting teams were available 24 hours a day to correct major problems.

Assistant commandant nomination WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Clinton has nominated three Marine general officers for promotions and new assignments at Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps.

Lieutenant General Richard I. Neal has been nominated for appointment to the grade of general and assignment as Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps. He currently serves as the deputy commander- in-chief/chief of staff, U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. A native of Hull, Mass., LtGen. Neal was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1965. His most recent assignments have included: commanding general, 2d Marine Division and deputy commanding general, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Major General Carol A. Mutter has been nominated for appointment to the grade of lieutenant general and assignment as deputy chief of staff for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. She is currently the only female general officer in the Marine Corps and is the highest ranking female officer in the Department of Defense. Currently serving as the commander, Marine Corps

Systems Command, Quantico, Va., M Gen. Mutter previously commanded the 3d Force Service Support Group and served as the comptroller for III Marine Expeditionary Force and 3d Marine Division. A native of Greeley, Colo., she was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1967.

Major General Terrance R. Dake has been nominated for appointment to the grade of lieutenant general and assignment as deputy chief of staff for Aviation. A native of Omaha, Neb., MGen. Dake is currently the commanding general, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, Calif. Commissioned a second lieutenant in 1966, he was designated a Naval Aviator Jan. 25, 1968. MGen. Dake's previous assignments have included deputy commanding general, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Inspector General for the Marine Corps, and assistant deputy chief of staff for Aviation.

President Clinton's nominations will be forwarded to the Senate for approval.(HQMC)

Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle with a firing unit mounted on the back. The unit has two four-missile boxes on each side, a .50 caliber machine gun box on the right side and a large camera on the left.

The camera is a forward looking infrared system. The FLIR allows Marines inside the fire unit and in the cab of the Avenger to locate targets at night by use of a monitor. It also has a targeting system which allows Marines to draw beads on enemies using methods similar to a video game with a monitor and con- trols.

It also has an identification friend or foe which aides in identifying friendly or hostile aircraft. The same system is used in military aircraft, according to Sgt. John F. Coker, Stinger gunner armorer.

Stinger missiles, the Corps' only heat-seeking ground-to-air missiles, were normally fired from a Marine's shoulder using a 'grip stock'.

"The biggest advantage to having the Avenger is fire on the move," said King.

The systems can engage targets while moving up to 30 miles per hour. They can hone in on enemy targets travelling well over 450 mph up to two miles away. The system holds eight missiles in the ready and can fire its entire load in approximately 40 seconds, according to King. The Avengers are also equipped

with a laser range finder which allows the operators to measure dis- tances to targets. If the target is within the system's inner-launch boundary, or no-fire zone, the Avenger will engage with its .50 cal. Each system's .50 cal. is capable of firing approximately 6,000 rounds at about 1,100 rounds per minute, according to Coker.

Coker also said the battery upgraded the Avenger with a wire remote control unit which allows Marines to operate the systems from up to 50 meters away. He said the battery plans to install global positioning systems in the Avengers later. The GP S will replace a com- pass by using an electronic unit via satellite to locate positions on a map. With a kill ratio of 95 percent,

according to Coker, the new Stinger system is far more powerful than the single-missile fire method used "in the old days," Lesher said referring to a few years ago when the missiles were only shoulder-fired. The Army has been stinging with

Avengers for approximately six years, deploying them to places such as Saudi Arabi and recently Bosnia, according to Coker.

"They use the M-998 (chassis)," said Coker. "We're using the M- 1097, which has a heavier suspen- sion, and we bought a remote track- ing unit to upgrade ours."

The other three Stinger batteries in the Corps are already equipped with Avengers. The first Marine unit to get the systems was 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion,

Cherry Point, N.C., in July, 1994, according to Sgt. Tebowldon Miles Jr., stinger gunner team leader. The other two, 3rd LAAD in Camp Pendleton, Calif., and 4th LAAD, a reservist unit divided into Pasadena, Calif. and Marietta, Ga., also received the systems before IstStingBatt. Now, lstStingBatt has its hands on the spreading weapons systems.

With the assistance of "A" Battery, 1st Battalion, 3d Marines, the Stinger Marines test-fired on aerial heat sources launched over a huge lava bed nestled between two mountains. The unit is authorized to fire 15 Stingers each year during its annual service practice shoot. "It's kind of like the rifle range for

us," said Coker. "We're also using this training period for practical application of the systems. We want to test the systems and make sure they're up to par."

Other training Stinger Marines receive include an individual conduct of fire unit and a unit COFT, a mock Avenger system which runs aircraft scenarios. They also go through hundreds of aircraft identification and communication classes, according to King.

Test-firing the Avenger gave the Marines experience with the growing technology of the Marine Corps. Technology plays a major role in the way today's wars are fought. With improvements such as the lethal Stinger, American forces boost their ability to leave hostile enemy forces scattered in pieces on the battlefield.

Randolph Linschoten, PHTLS Assistant Coordinator for the Pacific Rim. "This means we will be able to continue training and also certifying corpsmen as PHTLS providers and instructors."

The PHTLS program was developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians and The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. It offers the latest philosophies and techniques for the prehospital management of the trauma patient.

There are three provider courses: advanced, basic, and a refresh- er course for both levels. Continuing education credit is available for all courses.

PHTLS is taught throughout the United States and in many foreign countries. Since 1983 thousands of EMTs, paramedics, nurses and physicians, civilian and military, have taken this course. Because of PHTLS these emergency health care providers

are better prepared to care for the severely injured trauma patient.

"Its realistic training in the sense that we take an advanced approach to correct and strength- en the corpsman's education," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Richard Baker, course coordinator. Being in the middle of an emergency situation is no time to wonder if the corpsmen have received the necessary training, he said. "Unfortunately, training is not

always available due to expense and time restraints," explained Linschoten. "Many of the training courses were only available on the mainland. Which limited the training opportunities for the corpsmen stationed here. But the courses certification has greatly reduced the training costs for the pacific area and the course continues to grow." Since its inception in June 1994,

the PHTLS course here has gained notoriety from both the National Association of

Emergency Medical Technicians and from course sponsors and Pacific military community, he continued.

The course covers advanced air- way management, advanced trauma care, burn care, kinemat- ics (the physics of trauma); head, chest, abdominal and extremity trauma using both "hands-on" and lecture methods. Mating is both written and demonstrative.

"For our course out here we've extended the training by one day for the advance classes to include developing field . medical skills under combat conditions," said Linschoten. "This is a unique addition to our training center. We're planning on developing this course and submitting it to the Joint Medical Readiness Training Center in Fort Sam Houston, Thxas, for official recognition and possible submission into the text- book."

"Two helicopters are currently at depot-level maintenance at Cherry Point, N.C.," said Capt. Thomas Devine, airframe officer, HMM-165. "Two more should be going there at the end of April, which leaves six birds to airlift out of here. A portion of squadron personnel will accompany each wave of 46s we send," explained the Chalfont, Pa., native.

"The move is part of base realignment and closure," said Capt. Paul Housh, public affairs officer, HMM-165. "The final destination is Camp Pendleton, but they aren't ready for the 46s there yet." The squadron originally

anticipated departing Kaneohe Bay by ship, but has made adjustments to its initial plan, according to Devine.

"We were supposed to get a bulletin 5400, which sets the time line and milestones for the move, from Headquarters Marine Corps six months out," stated Devine. "We just received it last weekend, and we have already sent people PCS (permanent change of station)," he admonished.

"The bulletin is based on when CINCPACFLT (Commander In Chief, Pacific Fleet) publishes their ship schedule, and

Headquarters Marine Corps was waiting to see if any ships were coming through here," explained Devine.

With no ships available, the squadron is now depend- ing on opportunity lifts from the Air Force to transport the squadron piece-by-piece. This has caused some confu- sion for the squadron, according to Devine.

"We have a lot of people

going to TMO (transportation management office) try- ing to arrange moves, while other Marines are already TAD (temporary assigned duty) enroute to PCS to California," he added. "Nobody really knows when people are leaving for sure."

There are mixed emotions concerning the method of movement among the squadron's Marines.

"It would have been easier to move the squadron by- ship, but everybody is excited to gear up and get out of here," said Cpl. Russel. Gardner, crew chief, HMM.".. 165. HMM-165 is the last of

Marines assault through jungles in Australia LCpl. Douglas LaGore

LAND COMMAND BATTLE SCHOOL, TULLY, Australia - Meeting with maximum resistance from every type of vegetation possible, squads of Marines trudged ahead with their assaults here March 18.

3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine ip Regiment wardogs pushed through

the rain forest with an intensity timed at out- maneuvering their enemy to reach their objective during the 90-degree day.

The heat and foliage were not the only things standing in the way of the Marines, there were also two and three-man teams of Royal Australian Army troops armed with Squad Automatic Weapons and F- 88 AUS-STYRE rifles (standard issue weapon to the Australian infantrymen) awaiting contact.

The Marines are one company participating in the annual exchange exercise Gold Eagle-96. The exchange put a company from the 1st Royal Australian Regiment aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, and a composite company from 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment at Lavarack Barracks, Townsville, Australia. The focus of the outing was to further familiarize the participating companies with each others war fighting doctrines.

The day began with the Marines coming out of the jungle after a long

night filled with mosquitoes and strange creatures crawling throughout their harbor sights. After reaching the clearing, the Australians showed each platoon what happens during their morning stand-down time. Once each platoon understood all

the events associated with this morning ritual it was back to the jungle for squad size attacks.

The Marines were ready for anything that could possibly stand in their way, but the triple-canopy rain forest exacted its toll. After the first attack everyone was drenched in sweat and the cammi- paint had already begun to wash from the faces of the warriors. Each time the Marines hit an ambush they dropped to the ground and began to advance slowly through the vines and tree stumps.

"They have moved 300 meters in just about one hour and forty-five minutes," said lstLt. Chris Sampson, Platoon Commander, 1RAR. "You can see how hard it is for these blokes to move through the jungle and perform their attacks."

The Marines reorganized after each attack and critiqued what had just transpired. The instructor's comments constructively guided the Marines into a more efficient jungle stance, allowing greater communication between the fire teams. Everyone agreed they had to be a well -oiled machine when jungle assaults were conducted.

Some 3rd Platoon Marines enter the jungle during a patrol while adopting Austalian tactics.

Sampson said the jungle continu- ally forces the attackers further and further apart from each other, making it imperative to maintain eye contact with all those in the advance. To combat this the Australians remain as close together as possible even if they are forced to go around large obstacles.

With the critiques over it was time to try it again. The Australians went ahead of the squad and set in

for another ambush. This time the. Marines fared better, making use of cover and concealment while moving ahead. The Marines met with more success this time, by destroy- ing all enemy targets ahead of them. During the subsequent cri- tique the instructors asked the Marines what they thought was better about the attack..

munication during the assault was better than the last attack, and he owed this to having his troops in an area closer to himself.

The Marines continued to discover the hardships of the Thlly Jungle. With help from the Royal Australian Army, the grunts learned how to conduct attacks in a jungle environment, and know what to look for as possible weak links during these attacks.

With a firm grip on the leather- bound hilt of his Marine Corps noncommissioned officer sword, the young man smartly raises the knuckle bow to eye level and reports, "Sergeants Course two dash 96 all present for final drill evaluation."

Confidence resonates from his commands, "Forward March."

His stiff camouflage uniform with razor creases displays his profes- sionalism, and the way he wears his cover, high in the back with a two-finger space between the bill and the bridge of his nose, reveals the Corps' influence. The fact he has struggled to score

high on all his evaluations isn't surprising, because many students do. What is astonishing is the

eagle carrying two chevrons on his cover and collars.

Petty Officer 2 nd Class Jay Young II is a mechanic with Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Department, Barbers Point Naval Air Station, and today he becomes the first petty officer to graduate Sergeants Course here.

"Everything we have learned since boot camp he is learning all at once, right here," says fellow student, Sgt. Amy Boone, calibra- tion technician, Maintenance Company, Combat Service Support Group 3 here. Watching Young command the squad, she continues, "He's done better than half the class."

"By the right flank," Young commands, midway through the evaluation.

The eager petty officer was chal- lenged with learning weapons sys-

tems, Marine Corps customs and courtesies, patrolling, land naviga- tion and his most difficult task -- drill.

"We spent a lot of after duty hours working on drill," admits SSgt. Felix Aviles, instructor, Sergeants Course.

The eight year Navy veteran decided to join the Navy upon grad- uating Coronado High School, Lubbock, Texas.

"After I looked at my options, I decided it was the best decision."

Making the right decision is what placed Young among the ranks of Marines here.

"I heard about the chance to come here at Quarters, where we get the word for the week, and volunteered," he recalls. "It has been a challenge because of the quick pace, but it has given me a lot of confidence."

Some people question what practical use he would have for the Marine Corps training.

"It's all about leadership," says Aviles. "Once they have leadership, it is about career enhance- ment." The blade's foible - the back edge

- held taut to his shoulder, Young commands, "Fall out."

Driving the sword fully into the scabbard, Young flares his right heel as he steps with his left foot. With a devil dog's "Ooh Rah!" he celebrates his accomplishment, and begins to fix his eyes on the future.

"I want to wear Navy khakis someday." He explains "That's what Navy chiefs wear." After scribbling his last remarks

on Young's final drill score sheet, Aviles looks up from the clipboard and says, "Good job petty officer; 97 percent."

I, your intrepid reporter, was selected (OK, OK, I begged) to attend.

For those of you not familiar with "Bootyfest," let me hip you to the game. It included 24K known for their hit "ItsyBitsy, Theny-weeny," and they aren't referring to a yellow polka-dot bikini.

The main attraction was 69 Boyz, best known for wearing Penny Hardaway and Shaquille O'Neal's old basketball jerseys while rap- ping such classics as wlbotsie Roll." If you don't know, or haven't seen the wlbotsie Roll" dance, you've been living in the dark ages, or not watching much MW or BET (by the way, why does Hickam Air For Base have BET and we don't? Just thought I'd ask...)

I, your intrepid reporter, am very familiar with groups such as 69 Boyz and 24K You see, I was stationed in Florida when the "Miami Bass" sound exploded on the night- club scene. Miami bass is a fast- paced, high energy style, and if you dance to it. you WILL get into shape. I heard a lot of these two groups songs while I was on leave in Florida and Atlanta last year, and wanted to see how these people looked in concert, as opposed to say, Luther Vandross. The party was at The Groove, off

Nirnitz Highway. I, dressed in a Shaft-like outfit of deep purple and dark green (trust me, it looked sharp), strode to the front of the line and haughtily demanded to be let in as a VIP. Between sets, there was a scintil- lating dance contest. All I can say is I'd never pull my pants down to win a contest. Let's leave it at that.

69 Boyz came on, and they were great. They must have rapped their entire album, and their performance was nearly non-stop. If old people in the 1950s thought Elvis Presley's pelvic thrusts were ruining the minds of youth, thank goodness they haven't seen 69 Boyz. I mean, pelvic thrusts in sequence? On the knees? One guy did a handstand and performed pelvic thrusts. Incredible athletes, 69 Boyz.

All in all, single Marines, I'm pleased to report there's a LOT more to Hawaii than tourism. I even found a slice of Florida

The 7th annual Pyramid Rock Beach Bash here, offered hot sun, cool waves and friendly

competition to residents of Oahu' and visitors from afar Saturday and Sunday.

While dozens of surfers competed for prizes and trophies in professional and amateur surfing competitions, other contenders enjoyed body boarding, playing volley ball, tossing horse shoes, a tug of war competition, sand sculpture and over-the-line softball.

Many spectators doubled as sunbathers during Saturday's sunny competitions, but when Sunday turned cloudy, only the competitors and hard- core spectators remained.

Beach Bash '96 at Pyramid Rock was the site of two fun-filled days of surfing and bodyboarding competition.

Morale, Welfare and Recreation chose to extend the 7th annual event this year to cover both Saturday and Sunday. The added day was used to include a 40- and over surfing division and both a Pro shortboard and Pro longboard competition. Altogether, the Beach Bash featured 15 divisions of competition in bodyboarding and surfing. This year's event, sponsored by 'Ibwn and

Country Surf Shop, was by far the most popular and successful Beach Bash, judging by participation in the events. Competition was fierce as 166 contenders vied for the prizes and trophies in each surfing/bodyboarding division.

The Diaper Derby held March 28 at the Family Service Center definetely

wasn't Carl Lewis versus Linford Christie, but only because the air wasn't thick with tension. It was thick with cute grins,

baby powder and oohs and ahhs from proud moms and dads who watched their toddlers and crawlers compete for prizes only a child could love.

The first race was a 10-yard dash for toddlers. Morgan Perez, 11/4, overwhelmed the six- baby starting field and was awarded a trophy almost as tall as he is.

The second race, which exceed- ed the first race in intensity and excitement, was a 5-yard crawl for toddlers. The event came down to Dylan Sled, 1, son of Wendy Sled, and Michael O'Neal, 1, son of Michael and Cathy O'Neal. In a photo finish,

Dylan edged Michael, literally by a nose. Dylan, crying from his effort, lunged for the tape and caught it with his mouth as Michael, content with his position sitting inches away from the tape, reached for it with his

hand. Dylan was awarded a teddy bear for his efforts. All of the children were treated

to ice cream and cake before the events, and afterward, they took individual photos with the Easter bunny.

Working their way slowly down a phone cord in a single-file line, barely noticeable specks seem to create an endless flow of small bodies.

These sterile female workers follow a

chemical trail left by the scout who found something sweet, oily or meaty. Far from being merely a nuisance at pic-

nics, ants also wreak havoc in office spaces, military housing units, storage areas and any place their six legs can carry them.

"There are 42 species of ants in Hawaii," explained Roy Murakami, pest control for base. "They live' just about anywhere. It basically depends on the species." Most ants spend their time outside and

invade homes during heavy rains or dry spells in search of food, water or shelter. Others, however, live inside year-round, marching around becoming a nuisance.

"Some bite and some sting while others do both. Some even inject venom when they -sting," said Murakami.

"If bitten by ants baking soda, calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream may provide some relief," he explained, "If any-.

one is hypersensitive, however, they should consult a physician." Though some ants neither bite nor

sting, when biting or stinging ants are discovered it's important to rid the area of them. It is not important to know the species

because control measures which work on one species will usually work on others. "Food sources and sanitation are major

factors in ant infestations," Murakami stressed.

He recommended keeping the kitchen as clean as possible and storing food in sealed containers. Rinsing food packages

before throwing them in the garbage also helps reduce attractions.

Ant invasions may also be discouraged by following an ant trail back to its source and caulking holes or cracks to bar access.

Killing worker ants won't have much effect on the population however, keeping food from them and sealing their entry- ways will eventually deplete the colony.

Reduction of ant populations also reduces the possibility of cockroaches and other common household insects.

Along with reducing the number of pests, their predators such as spiders and cen- tipedes are less likely to linger in the area.

OWNSVILLE, Australia - Slithering through an estuary, bounding down

a path, lying inches below the water's surface only to come up for air -- these were all viable afternoon passtimes here March 27. Though it sounds like good

places for cover and concealment, the Marines attached to the Gold Eagle-96 Composite Company did not care, they stayed in the open and took pictures of the Australian animals.

The company from 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment took a moment from the hectic Gold Eagle-96 training schedule to visit the Billabong Sanctuary

located minutes from their barracks. Billabong is an Aboriginal term for a fresh water estuary and a haven for all types of animals and reptiles indigenous to the area. The trip began in the morning

with the Marines transported to the site by bus, and after buying a few bags of kangaroo feed, it was off to explore the 800 - meter loop surrounding the billabong.

The loop took the Marines by six, three-meter crocodiles, of which only one was visible at first glance. The staff conducted a regular feeding for the curious audience. The show began with the audience attempting to find the crocs. Even with a keen eye the average person could not figure out

where the reptiles were hiding. It turned out the crocs were only an inch below the surface of their pond.

The staff feeder, armed with a garden rake, and another person, who's job was to beat off any of the more friendly crocs with a lead pipe, warily approached the pond's edge. Seconds later there was a huge Estuary crocodile on the bank.

While walking through the more densely covered ground a thumping sound could be heard. The Marines turned around and were overrun by four Kangaroos. The scene was reminiscent of the raptors running by Sam Neil in "Jurassic Park". After the Marines determined the rules of engagement with the animals, all became friends; after all the devil dogs had something they wanted -- food.

The morning excursion included a class on snakes, a Koala bear feeding, and introduction to other Australian animals. However, there was one the Marines knew all too well. The Cassowary, a giant

ostrich-looking bird inhabiting the Tully Jungle, had become each platoon's arch rival during their training at the Land Command Battle School. Granted it is only a bird, but this type has been known to kill humans who come to close to their young.

The black feathered, blue-head- ed beast can impale an interlop- er with a large single claw on its feet. This time the birds were on the other side of the fence and were no threat to anyone.

Many Marines had seen this bird off in the distance during their training, but none wanted to see it up close in its natural domain. Everyone was astound- ed by the size of this freakish- looking bird.

The trip to the sanctuary provided a much needed reprieve for the Marines of Gold Eagle- 96, and let them get close to many of the animals they had only silhouetted through Night Vision Gear.

FSC volunteer to be remembered Monday Family Service Center MCB Kowa

The Family Service Center was saddened to hear Col. Murray Cole,

U.S. Air Force, ret., passed away March 22. Cole was a volunteer employment counselor with the Family Service Center here for nearly seven years. During this

time, he volunteered over 3,000 hours, providing job and career counseling for hundreds of eligible clients.

Cole began his volunteer work counseling newly-arrived dependent spouses seeking employment in Hawaii. He had a genuine desire to help people and always attempted to make newcomers feel comfortable in their new surround- ings and culture. His affiliation with organizations and businesses in Ha waii enhanced the job referral program and oftentimes through his personal contacts, was able to successfully place clients in jobs.

More recently, due to the downsizing of the military, Cole became involved with service members leaving active duty and transition- ing into the civilian workforce. Being a retired colonel, he related well to military personnel and enjoyed sharing with his clients his vast knowledge and experience. Besides counseling, he also conducted monthly classes on resume preparation. He always offered sound, practical advice and prepared service members for their new challenges.

In addition to volunteering at the base, Cole gave much of his time to many other organizations. He was an active member of his church and was the personal affairs officer for the local chapter of the Retired Officers Association. As a member of the Exchange Club, he partici- pated on a yearly selection commit-

Cole was a vibrant, energetic and tireless individual. He was dependable and resourceful and wholeheartedly gave of himself to

many different activities. Even with a recent illness, Cole continued to volunteer his services until he was hospitalized. The many Marines, family members and retirees here, as well as other community organizations, were truly fortunate to have known Col. Cole and will miss him. Funeral services will be held Monday at Hawaii Memorial Park Mortuary. Inurnment of the ashes will be at 3 p.m. at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery.

A host of activities are planned for Easter aboard MCB Hawaii. First, it's an Easter Egg- Stravaganza Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Windward Enlisted Club. Fun activities are planned for kids from egg coloring to dancing the "Bunny Hop." Free hot dogs, chips and treats will be served. There will also be an egg hunt for children from walking age to 12. Even the Easter Bunny will be making a special appearance for pictures with the kids. Organized by MWR Youth Activities, this event is open to all MCB Hawaii families, as well as DoD civilian personnel and their families. Don't miss the Egg- Stravaganza. The Commander Marine Forces Pacific Volleyball Championship kicked off here Monday.

Competing for the title are two teams from Marine Corps Base Camp S.D. Butler, Okinawa; one from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, and the defending champion team from Marine Corps Base Hawaii. The competition will unfold over this week, and cli- max Friday with the championship game.

One of the military contenders, Kevin O'Connell, even went on to place first in the military surfing division and fourth in the Longboard Open division."

"The waves at Pyramid Rock Beach are powerful and ideal for intermediate and advanced surfers," he continued. Windward waves are originated by a wind swell, where the size of the wave is determined mostly from the strength and time the wind acts on the water. The waves of northern Oahu are ground-swell driven, where the size of the wave is largely determined by the abrupt, steep incline of the beach. However, both Pyramid and North Beach have a combination of both wind and ground-swell waves making them some of the best waves to surf on Oahu, he said.

Although the wave conditions weren't ideal Saturday afternoon, with waves 1-2 feet, most surfers still managed to find something to ride and show off their skills to the judges on the shore.

Sunday the waves were better with 2-3 foot swells but the day was overcast with intermittent showers.

For the first time, the Beach Bash surfing competition included two Pro divisions. "We had almost double the number of competitors for the shortboard as the longboard which is surprising," Colapinto said. "The longboard is what a lot of the pros are using. The nine-foot longboard only weighs about 10 pounds, so they're very maneuverable. But this year the shortboard was the most popular, with 28 entries." The top three finishers are listed for the
