Corps sets definition of hazing J Order means no acts which are cruel, abusive, humiliatizolvioppressive, such as "ging.
Fred Carr HOMC Public Affairs
WASHINGTON - The com- mandant of the Marine Corps wants all ,Marines to understand certain activities won't be tolerat- ed because they detract from the levels of leadership, dignity and respect expected of Marines, and because they can be physically and emotionally damaging.
One such activity is hazing, and it is addressed in a new Marine Corps Order, MCO 1700.28, signed by Gen. Charles C. Krulak June 18.
The order defines hazing as any conduct "whereby one military member, regardless of service or rank, causes another military member ... to suffer or be exposed to an activity which is cruel, abu- sive, humiliating or oppressive. }Fazing includes, but is not limit- ed to, any form of initiation or congratulatory act which involves physically striking another to inflict pain, piercing another's skin in any manner, verbally berating another, encouraging another to exces- sively consume alcohol or encour- aging another to engage in ille- gal, harmful, demeaning or dan- gerous acts."
Hazing is not confined to physi- cal contact; it can also be verbal or psychological. The definition does not include mission or operational
activities, or the requisite train- ing to prepare for such missions or operations. Additionally, activi- ties such as administrative correc- tive measures, extra military instruction, command authorized physical training and incentive training for recruits are specifi- cally permitted by the order.
Any violation or attempted viola- tion of the order can result in dis- ciplinary action under Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice - failure to obey an order or regulation. Additionally, Marines who engage in hazing may also face other charges.
The measures contained in MCO 1700.28 are necessary, said Gen. Krulak, because, "Unfortunately, some in our ranks confuse hazing with the tradition of certain mili- tary ceremonies and develop initi-
ations or 'rites of passage' they believe promote loyalty. They do not." Training on hazing will be an
annual instruction requirement in the Marine Corps Troop Information Program. Entry-level training will also be provided to both officer and enlisted Marines, and be included in certain profes- sional military education courses.
The order on hazing does not preclude proper time-honored tra- ditions, such as hails and farewells, promotion/graduation ceremonies, mess nights and sim- ilar activities, Gen. Krulak said.
"These events are part of our heritage... Properly organized and supervised, these events serve to enhance morale, esprit de corps, pride, professionalism and unit cohesiveness."
3/3 Marines sharpen skills with amtrac training
CpI. Jason Dequenne MCB Okinawa Public Affairs
MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP S.D. BUTLER, Okinawa, Japan - Hawaii- based Marines from 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, recently grabbed their ALICE packs and headed to the field, where they honed their nighttime war-fight- ing skills during a battalion field exercise.
The focus of the three-day exer- cise was to conduct training for two mission essential tasks assigned to the battalion by the 4th Marine Regiment, according to Lt. Col Louis Sposato, com- manding officer, 3/3. The first task was to practice
integrated training with assault amphibious vehicles from Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. This training was completed as 3/3 simulated a night attack on an enemy posi- tion.

After a decade of dominance in an annual police dog competition, the Military Police Department here has claimed the most trophies, but gave up the overall K-9. titles to the Honolulu Police Department
Up against the best four-legged crime fighters in the state, the reigning cham- pion Marines knew competition would be rough with three of their best dogs on the disabled list, according to Cpl. Chad Dubose, chief trainer, MPD.
Still, they fell only 10 points short of victory top kennel.
"It, was a very close competition," said Dubose. "Had we not made the mis- takes due to inexperience or had our best dogs there, we would've definitely taken it"
Silva, a 6-year-old Belgian Malanois, took the top dog spot for the last two years. However, this year, she lost her
During this attack, the battalion's three rifle companies were pitted against a small aggres- sor force of 20 Marines from the headquarters company. The objective was for the rifle compa- nies to seize the enemy position from the aggressors with the help of the AAVs.
For the attack, Company L was paired up with nine AAVs. They acted as the bat- talion's mechanized infantry unit, which allowed them to reach the enemy objec- tive faster than their ground- pounding counterparts in Companies I and K. They also had greater firepower because of added high caliber crew-served weaponry onboard the AAVs.
"The great speed and firepower of the AAVs was an advantage to us during an attack," said Capt.

"The dogs performed great out there," said Cpl. Miles Burroughs, handler of Amber, a 2-year-old German Shepherd who took first in narcotics detection and third in obedience.
And even though the Marines didn't reclaim the top dog spot, the devil dogs took third, fourth, fifth and sixth posi- tion, nipping on the winners' heels.
"We had a great time," said Dubose. "That's all that counts." And next year, he said, the Marines are going to come out with their best paws forward.

Funding cuts, maintenance and repair and quality of housing were addressed niesday at the Base Action Committee meeting here.
Due to government funding cuts, the main objective for the Housing Department is to save money while keeping a high quality of life for resi- dents here, said Becky Ray Chestnut, Housing director. The Quarters Cleaning Initiative cur-
rently in effect will change in October, Chestnut said. For the new cleaning initiative, residents can pay a private
company to clean their facilities and stand final cleaning inspections.
"The contractor will be responsible for the final inspection," said Chestnut.
Chestnut also spoke of maintenance of washers and dryers. Housing will no longer put washers and dryers in homes for new families, but will repair or replace the appliances if they are already in the homes, said Chestnut.
For more information about about the new cleaning initiative, mainte- nance or repair, contact Melissa Cutter at 257-2524 or Eddie Kare, 257-2676. The committee will focus on the com-
missary at next month's meeting, July 29.

Up against the most squared- away military police officers in Hawaii, a Marine military policeman here won an annu- al "[bp Cop" award from the Hawaii State Law Larez
Enforcement Officer's Association. When Cpl. Robert L. Larez, kennel-
master, Military Police Department, was asked how he earned the recog- nition, he said it was a result of a team of Marines. "Support from my Marines made me
what I am," said Larez. "Without them, I'm just another Marine. The lbp Cop award should actually be called a Ibp Section award.

directly with the AAVs. However, Companies I
and K did receive some hands-on training with the amphibious vehicles.
They practiced boarding the vehicles, loading gear aboard them, and also received safety briefs about the vehicles. However, the most interac- tive training was practicing how to react to enemy contact. During a simulation, the Marines were
attacked from both the front and rear of the AAVs. When the "contact front" alarm sounded, the Marines stormed out of the AAVs and rushed to the front of the vehicle. Here, they spread out in a 180-degree arch, called a "hasty 180", where they returned fire.
This process was repeated many times until it became second nature to the Marines.
Following their training with the AAVs, 3/3's Marines began for the second phase of the exer- cise -- a sweep through Camp Hansen as part of
a night Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) exercise.
The MOUT training began as 3/3 emerged from the Central Training Area and entered the south- ern end of Camp Hansen. Here, each rifle com- pany was assigned a portion of the camp to sweep through.
The goal was to sweep through the camp from north to south as quickly as possible while keep- ing the battalion on-line and moving together.
Squad by squad, platoon by platoon, and com- pany by company, the batallion moved together. stopping at each building to search for any sign of enemy presence. This continued throughout the night until 3/3 swept the camp and complet- ed their mission, building a little confidence at working in a night time environment. '
"I'm hoping the Marines understand the night is something they can use as an ally," said Sposato. "They should be comfortable at night and use it to their advantage. In a MOUT situ- ation, they can use the darkness to mask their movement as they move from one building to another."

"I give them everything I got," contin- ued Larez. "I don't half-step. I love my job and I love the Marine Corps."
"He is doing the job of a staff sergeant, leading 13 Marines as a young corporal," said MGySgt. David Kelly, provost sergeant, MPD. "He contributes a lot to the department, community and himself. His motiva- tion and leadership skills made him a great candidate."
More than 200 military policemen island-wide were evaluated for submis- sion for the HSLEOA award, according to GySgt. Gilbert Contrarez, Military Police Company first sergeant. Only one was chosen to represent the base among entrants from bases state-wide.
Larez was one of five Marines chosen for K-9 School out of 55 military police- men at Military Police School, Ft. McClellan, Alabama, in October 1993. After arriving here in June 1994,

Larez attended Military Working Dog Supervisors School in San Antonio in May 1995. Two years later, he became MPD's kennelmaster.
During his enlistment, Larez has deployed to the Middle East, been involved in supporting the president of the United States and was sent to assist the Secret Service in New York.
Here, he graduated Special Reaction Team School and Corporals Course. While at the Corporals Course, his leadership abilities won him the lead- ership award.
His history, matched with off -duty
education and community services, made Larez a shoe-in for the award, according to Kelly. "Not a day goes by that he does not
make an impact of some type," said Kelly. "The judges were looking for a military policeman with the best over- all picture. That's why Larez won."
"I give 120 percent in everything I need to accomplish," said Larez. "It's more than just a job for me. It's fun." Along with certificates and a plaque,
Larez will enjoy an all-expenses-paid, two-night trip to Kauai for his accom- plishment, he said.

Georgia's governor "fell to top" via Corps
Cpl. J.R. Lewis Mama Corps Reerw Depot, Parns Wend
MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT, Parris Island, S.C. - "Drunk, dirty, disheveled, and dejected, I sat cross-legged on the floor of the Gilmer County Jail in the Appalachian town of Ellijay, Ga."
It's hard to believe these words describe a man on the path to greatness. But that's exactly how Georgia's Governor Zell Miller stars out his latest book, "Corps Values - Everything You Need to Know I Learned in the Marine Corps." The path that led Miller from that jail cell in
August 1953 to his position at the top in the state he loves wasn't easy. In fact, he took one of the hardest routes imaginable - the U.S. Marine Corps. The decision to enlist, said Miller, is one of the
best he ever made. "I would not be governor today if it were not for
those 12 weeks I spent at Parris Island and those three years I spent in the Marine Corps," said Miller in his deep southern drawl. "The values that were taught to me in the Marine Corps are values that are current in everything I do."
With his wry southern wit and often humorous accounts of recruit training at Parris Island in the 1950s, the former Marine sergeant puts a spin on the fundamental Marine Corps values with which he was embedded, and supplies these lessons as a guide for changing an ailing society.
Somewhere in the literary ground between Robert Fulghum's "Everything I need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten," Hillary Rodham Clinton's "It 'rakes a Village," and William Bennees 'The Book of Virtues," Miller's fourth lit- erary work weighs in big on values and boot camp memories., but small on the windy, self-
aggrandizing style that plagues the memoirs of many politicians. In the words of "Marietta Daily Journal" columnist Matt Thwery, who ran on the GOP ticket in opposition of Miller in 1990, Miller is "gently placing his arm around the shoulder of the reader and sharing the secret to an orderly and productive life."
"I just wanted to weigh in more on the discus- sion of values that I had first learned from my mother and were later reinforced so strongly by the Marines," said Miller. Like a tattoo, those values are under Miller's
skin and have guided him every day since he left the Corp's ranks. The values are neatness, punc- tuality, brotherhood, persistence, pride, respect, shame, responsibility, achievement, courage, dis- cipline and loyalty. Miller dedicates a chapter to each value and reinforces the value's importance with anecdotes, philosophies, and his version of the facts of life.
Not surprisingly, Miller's "Corps Values" fall directly in line with the Marine Corps Core Values - Honor, Courage and Commitment. The two philosophies share the common idea that character is destiny, both in individuals (such as governors), and organizations (such as the Marine Corps).
"I have met very few former Marines who haven't kept these values," he added.
From the tower- ing portrait of Iwo Jima that rests on the wall behind his desk in the Georgia State Capitol, his trade- mark black cow- boy boots that are polished mirrors at the toe, to the gold, eagle, globe and anchor pinned on his suit jacket, Miller's love for the Corps is present in his everyday life.
Miller isn't the only one who is thankful to the Corps for guiding him to the top political office in Georgia. Countless cars driven by college stu- dents retuning home for summer break bear bumper stickers praising HOPE scholarships. Since 1993, HOPE (Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally) has provided free college tuition and book allowances to students who graduate from Georgia public or private schools with a B

1950s, and right, in his attributes his success to
average. In addition, Miller has also provided a pre-kindergarten plan for all Georgia 4-year-olds and a tough DUI plan aimed at keeping those children and their families alive.
In light of his achievements, Miller has been described as "a brilliant, brilliant governor," by President Bill Clinton, and "Thugh as nails," by former Georgia Senator Sam Nunn.
But of all the words used to describe Miller, there is one one word that best sums up his achievements and attitude toward success in life - Marine.

Hail to the corpsmen Impact
Area
0 ne of the benefits of being a journalist is I get to go places and do things I normally wouldn't get to do. Such was
the case when I was invited to attend the Corpsman's 99th Birthday Ball at the Ilikai Hotel in Waikiki, June 13.
My intent was to attend the ball and write a story about what happened, so I prepped my dress blues and looked forward to an evening of wining and dining. After talking to several corpsmen, both active duty and retired, I realized the story wasn't about the ball. The real story was about the corpsmen.
There was a sense of pride in the room that I had not picked up around other Sailors. These "Does" have much of the same corn- raderie and esprit de corps as Marines. Perhaps it is because they serve with Marines, or maybe because they're the "grunts" of the Navy.
Looking back on my glory years in F Company, 2d Battalion, 3d Marine Regiment, I remember Marines harassing the corpsmen constantly - ragging them for being in the Navy. And God help tHem when they put their "ice cream" suits on.
But nobody really gave them the credit they were due. They took good care of us, whether in garrison, the field or on a hump.
Speaking of humps, not only did the Does have to carry the same gear we did, they also had to carry their "Unit Is" - full of IVs, gauze, other assorted medical supplies, and of course, Motrin. Very rarely did corpsmen fall out of humps, even with the extra gear.
When we stopped on breaks, they hardly had time to take their packs off. They were walking around checking on us, making us drink water and checking our feet - and checking the feet of grunts on a hump is merit for some kind of award itself. They endured all the unbearables when we
went to the field as well - the bone-chilling temperatures, the blistering heat and the pounding rain. They slept alongside us in the puddles, and patrolled countless miles up and down never-ending hills. They were one of us - as close to being a
Marine without actually being one. Wherever we were, Doc was with us.
One of the speakers at the Corpsman's Ball made an insightful comment I had never thought about before. He said, "If a machine gunner is killed during an attack, another Marine can pick up the gun and go on, but if a corpsman falls, the mission is compro- mised."
My first reaction was grunts don't need corpsmen to annihilate the enemy and com- plete the mission? which is true; but lives would be lost without their aid. We used to joke about Doe's cure-all - motrin -and- water, but the truth is corpsmen know what they're doing.
I thank God for never having to go into combat (yet), but if I do, I will thank Him for sending a corpsman with me.
Self Help a necessity for junior Marines
0, I can't say I remember the "We don't promise you a rose garden" poster myself, but I know of it from my father,
who, like myself, is a former Marine. Frankly, I don't know many Marines who are
really worried about a "nicely manicured" lawn. Between work, training, school, family and chil- dren, most Marines don't have time for that.
What Milliman isn't thinking about is the fact not everyone here is a captain. The majority of population on this base are probably corporals and below, many of them with families. For a lot of Marines it is a struggle to pay all of their bills, much less come up with an extra $200 or more to buy a lawn mower of their own.
Yes, you could say it is their fault for not managing their money better, but a Marine's budgeting skills are not always the cause of the problem. Sometimes a situation arises unexpectedly and it puts a strain on their bud- get for some time. And many of these young Marines are just that - young. They are learning to better themselves, including how to budget.
So, you have heard this "rising cry of discon- tent," captain? Of course, everyone is upset over the closing of the Self Help Store, but don't theyhave good reason? I agree with those who are angry at its closing.
I do understand the reason for the closure, as do most people, but I don't understand Milliman's rationale. You don't expect people to be upset about this? What if they cut DoD decal issuance for vehicles because it cost too
much? Would you be upset because every time you entered the base you had to show ID and your vehicle information? You bet you would.
My point is if you take away anything people are accustomed to having, there are going to be people voicing their angry opinions - and with very good reason. Maybe someone should have realized long ago it costs a lot of money to keep the Self Help Store going. There is a possible solution in the "store" part of the name.
Why not place a small charge for the items people are now simply using? Sure, people would probably still be upset, but it beats los- ing it completely, right? Many of the items in there cost quite a bit out in town, so why not charge a little for them? You know, $1 for child safety latches, $2 to rent a lawn mower.
As for washers and dryers, I ask, "Why not?" Why shouldn't married Marines and Sailors in housing have washers and dryers? I know it is in an order, but why does this order exist? Oh. wait, I forgot, Marines get such large pay- checks they can buy these items as well.
Milliman is looking at this issue with tunnel vision. He only sees how this will affect him- self and his peers. It may not be too hard for him to go out and buy a lawn mower, washer and dryer. All he has to do is "tighten the 'Ole
financial belt a notch or two until the crunch passes."
But there are a lot of Marines and Sailors here who don't have extra notches in that eole financial belt. What are they going to do? I guess there are always scissors and the laun- dromat.
Paul Titus
Shhh... hey Marines, let's keep it quiet at Mokapu Gate
've all had them at one time or another the guy next door who wants to mow his lawn at zero-dark-thiry on the weekend;
the barracks rat who insists on playing his new "Rollins Band" tape at warp factor eight around 2:30 on the morning of a PFT, or the one who just has to rev the engine on his new high-perfor- mance car to the redline every time he starts it
They're the neighbors from hell. In spite of all the positive things you hear about
Marine Corps Base Hawaii, neighbors from hell is exactly what we're being to some folks who live right outside Mokapu Gate.
The problem is three-fold: units are conducting
PT in the open space just inside and to the right of the gate as you head out, the same spot is being used as a turn-around point for the PFT run, including the booming voice of a Marine shouting split times and drivers and base personnel and commercial vendors and civilians who service MCB Hawaii, are speeding when they leave base.
First, lees look at the practice of conducting cal- isthenics in the open area at the turn-around point. Units which make it that far run right past a sign at the Boondocker access road which clearly states there are to be no formation runs or chanting beyond that point.
But if the base regulations aren't enough for you, think how you'd like it if this was taking place just outside your bedroom window. I deal with these neighbors when they call to complain, and my sympathies are with them. There cer- tainly are enough places on the 2,951 acre base to exercise without disturbing these folks.
This brings us to the PM' issue. Runners don't make much noise, but whoever is calling out split times does. Let's take an imaginary unit with a full complement of people. The 300-PFT Marines
are hitting the halfway point at 81/2 to 9 minutes. The person who just barely squeaks by on the S-
mile run is going to hit that point six to seven minutes later. In between, our neighbors are lis- tening to times constantly being called out, usual- ly around 5:30 or 6 a.m.
Not all our neighbors outside Mokapu Gate are early risers. Some work shifts, and anyone who's ever tried to sleep after an all-night duty knows how hard it is to sleep in the daytime, even more so with this kind of noise going on. Others are retired and have no need to be awakened at that time of morning.
Having served in the Corps for more than nine years, I know the value of the PFT. But it seems we should be able to find some way to quiet the halfway point or move it so its not going to dis- turb our neighbors. Again, this is a big base. I think we can reach a compromise.
Lastly, there's the issue of driving outhe back gate. Have you noticed the speed limit actually drops five mph when you exit the gate? You'd never know it come quitting time. It looks like the start of the Indy 500 out there.
I'll admit, its taken me some time to get used to thge fact the speed limit drops -I've got enough horses under the hood of my Mustang to make that a very interesting stretch of road in the after- noon. Even though I may think it's silly to have the limit drop from there to the point where Mokapu and Kaneohe Bay Drive meet and go back to 30 mph, its still the law. And here's the reason it's the laW: that stretch of
Mokapu Boulevard is almost completely residen- tial, which means there are kids living near the gate - kids who may be playing near the mad. Would you want to be the one explaining to the police you hit a neighbor child because you were so happy to leave base after a hard day at work? ;
Children aren't the only ones at risk; our own Marines often walk along Mokapu Boulevard to and from base. How said it would be to lose one of our own because Joe COol wanted to hotrod out the gate at quitting time. These problems may seem small in the grand
scheme of things, but they are a constant annoy- ance to our neighbors. Show them the courtesy they deserve.

A pregnant woman was taken to Castle Medical Center after an inci- dent at the Marine Corps Exchange, building 1090. The woman told Military Police and Federal Fire Department personnel she was experi- encing abdominal pains after two metal shelves fell on her back and caused her to fall. She was later transferred to Kapiolani Medical Center for further evaluation.
Military Police arrested a Marine for leaving a child unattended and damage to government property after the FFD notified MPsef a flooded quarters. The Marine told MPs he left the child inside the quarters while he cleaned his jet ski. He said the child must have turned on the faucet to the bathtub, causing it to overflow and flooding the quarters. FFD deemed the quarters unsafe for occupation due to water in the electrical system.

Marines rally to win
HASAC softball
CpI. or

HICICAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii - With one loss already tacked
on the board in the double- elimination softball tourna- ment here Saturday, Hawaii Marines faced almost certain doom as the unde- feated Navy team waited in the bat- ter's box, ready for its next swing at them.
But despite a 16-14 win the Navy squeezed by with over the leathernecks earlier in the Hawaii Armed Services Athletic Council tour- nament, the Marines came back from a one-loss deficit to defeat the Sailors for the championship trophy. "The Marines haven't won the
HASAC since 1992," said Camario Dominguez, Hawaii Marines head coach. "But this year, we had some outstanding talent and hitting ability. They know where to hit the ball and they're successful in coming through with clutch hits."
The softball-slugging devil dogs started the tourney with a 10-3 domination over the Army. Tommy Jones, second baseman, and Phil Macon, left centerfielder, were the heroes in the first victory, both going three for four.
Macon lead the team with two homers and two RBIs while Jones gave a helping hand, producing a double with another pair of RBIs. The Marines' second game
was chalked up to the Navy in a 16-14 tug-of-war. Macon and Jones each found the opposite side of the fence at the plate with Bill Thompson, first base- men, joining in for a trio of homers. "But we made a few errors
and the Navy capitalized on them," said Dominguez.
The Marines' third game was a rematch with the Army. The soldiers had just shut the Air Force out of the tournament, but the Marines were confident of victory, Dominguez said.

Why in the world would anyone ant to get up early on a
Saturday morning, swim 500 meters (a lot harder than it
sounds), bike more than 10 miles and run 3.1 miles, with no rest between the exercises?
Why, indeed. Aviation Support Element annually counts on adrenaline-crazed athletes to fill the ranks of its Triathlon, part of the Commanding General's Fitness Series. Saturday, approximately 150 athletes showed up, some to find out how fit they are, and some merely climbing another step on their way to a higher level of fitness.
Take Kenneth Neal, for instance. He calls a triathlon like this his "hobby," and is working to finish high in his age group.
"I had a good result this year," said the wiry 27-year-old. "I've been doing this for a year, and I've been improving with each one."
The ASE course was a good one, Neal said. 'The swim was nice but tough," he said. "My
cycling was good. It's where I usually pick up my spots. I caught a cramp during the run, but I feel good."
First place overall went to ibny Guerra, who finished the course in 51 minutes, 52 seconds. Second was claimed by Beck Kelmer in 52:28, while David Morken was third in 63:39.
The first three women finishers were Caroline Heinrich, who caine in at 1:00:02, Jackie Jesswein in 1:03:53 and Lisa Jones in 1:05:20. Marine Corps Air Facility scored first place
points in the CG's Fitness Cup, finishing sec- ond in the team competition behind a team from Pacific Fleet.

My Lost World My family and I saw
"The Lost World" last week, and it got me thinking - what if
dinosaurs were still around? One thing I wouldn't have to
worry about is people letting their dogs run loose in my yard and pooping all over it. My pet velociraptors would take care of them. Heck, as nasty as the raptors have been made out to be in the movies, they'd probably take care of me, too. Believe me, I'd have a pet
raptor. I would imagine the "who's the man" factor of hav- ing one would outweigh even that of the largest, most pow- erful of dogs. You walk down the street with your two Rottweilers, and I'll walk with my pet raptor, and we'll see who gets right-of-way on the sidewalk.
A better consideration of having dinos around would be having the opportunity to learn about perhaps the most fascinating creatures ever to walk the earth. Steven Spielberg doesn't know the curiosity he's wrought - or maybe he dOes, if he's been watching the Discovery Channel. After "Jurassic Park," America simply went nuts over dinos.
I, being an animal lover and dinosaur enthusiast since I was old enough to say "T-Rex," make it a point to watch all the dinosaur shows, even if they're repeats and I know a lot of the information they go through anyway. My son got into it, but his curiosity has waned a bit. He walks around a bit scared, and peeps around corners sometimes, because I play a game called "raptor" with him, in which I hide and wait for him to walk past, then leap out and swipe at him with three fingers, repre- senting the fingers and claws of the villainous creature. It's not cruel, but because
he's easy to scare, wifey-poo gets mad at me. She didn't want him to see "The Lost World," but he insisted he was okay with it. I had my doubts, too, because he still hasn't watched the entire "Jurassic Park" video we have, but he said he would not be scared.
When the scene with the rap- tors played, it was one of those parent-child moments you childless readers out there have no clue about. I looked over at my son, who was staring at the screen, his eyes wide. After a moment, he looked over at me, and smiled. "I'm cool, Daddy," he said. "I
know they're not real." All I could do was smile and
relax, and wonder why Spielberg just doesn't do a movie about raptors, because with their intelligence, it would be interesting to see how would they fare in a pro- tracted situation with humans.
Of course, the raptors would lose - you know there would be tons of alleged "big game" hunters trying to bag .some raptor claws, or mount one of their heads in a trophy room somewhere.
Dinos have entered our psyche because we know they were here - unlike aliens, whose looks we count on our imagina- tions for. The dinos are real, and with all the cloning and cell regeneration going on these days, who knows? One day, I might just walk a
raptor down the street, and ask everybody, "Who's the man?"

Two men square off against each other. They have no weapons other than skill, cun-
ning and determination. They have no help from allies -only the cheers from surrounding crowds. After defeating all other wrestlers
in his 138-pound weight. class at the Aloha Games, LCpI. Paul T. Clark won the right to by out for the All- Marine wrestling team in January - a dream of his since he joined the Marine Corps. Although he had just taken a giant step towards complet- ing his goal, fatigue kept the immedi-
at celebration to a minimum. "I had to wrestle seven times in one
day -two matches went into over- time, and I injured my calf before the final match," said Clark. "It felt good to win, but it didn't really hit me until a while after the match.
Clark left for boot camp in fall of '95 with aspirations of joining the All- Marine wrestling team,
"It's been my highest goal since I came in," said Clark "I knew it would be tough."
It's not just tough competition, but as a squad leader in I Company, 3d Battalion, 3d Marine Regiment, Clark spends a lot of time in the field training and teaching junior Marines
High speed fun at Hale Koa's game room Cpl. Steven Williams

WAIKIKI, Hawaii - Skimming the water's surface, you leap from
wave to wave at 100 mph racing the clock. A wrong move or mis- taken turn could end it all.
Zooming across a watery course on an Aquajet is just one of many things arcade fans can do at the Hale Koa Hotels' new game room. "It's pretty neat," said Donald
Brookins, 11-year-old son of a
Marine major stationed in Quantico, Va. "They have a good selection of games which a lot of arcades don't have. All of these games are fun.
"And most of them have big screens which make you feel like you're in the action," he continued. "It's a lot more fun to play when the screens are bigger."
The hotel, an armed forces recreation center, hosted a grand opening for the game room June 13. More than 100 people showed up to play with
the new Hale Koa joysticks, according to Lani McWilliams, Hale Koa marketing specialist. Other games include an inter-
national car racing game called "Cruisin' World," a challenge hovering cycle game called "Propcycle" and, like any good arcade, pinball.
The Game Room is located near the main pool right off Waikiki Beach. It's open to all ages daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. "Just don't bring a whole lot of
money," said Brookins. "It's addictive."
in infantry skills. But when he's in garrison, Clark follows a demanding training regimen he.
"I run three miles in the morning and again at lunch. In the afternoon, I go to the gym for an hour and wres- tle, lift weights and run again," said the Mason, Ohio grappler.
However, a heavy workout program isn't all it takes for Clark to stay in his 138-pound weight class. He also maintains a strict diet, drinking a lot of water, eating a lot of fruits, vegeta- bles, pastas and tuna, and keeping track of calories.
With such a restricted diet, fast food joints, offering tasty but fat-filled burgers, fries and pizzas constantly
tempt Clark away from his nutri- tious menus. But the Marine is not so easily lured by the greasy foods.
"I just think about the competition and how much work rve put into this," said Clark "Once I make weight, it's not that bad, and I can see all the work has been worth it. One advantage Clark has is his
coach, GySgt. Lewis M. Dorrance, Co., 3/3. Dorrance, a Olympic wrestling alternate in '84, '88 and 92, has helped guide and train Clark.
"He's worked very hard to get where he is," said Dorents. "We had to get him back loll' deployment) early for the Aloha Games, but he deserved to go."

The Single Marine Program Council is here as your voice. We work to develop
answers to problems unique to Marines and Sailors at Kaneohe Bay and Camp Smith. Without your support, nothing
can be accomplished. We have already worked a number of
concerns affecting the overall quality of life for single service- members here. For example, some of the new improvements at Anderson Hall were in response to suggestions the SMP Council presented to the chow hall leadership during one of our meetings. The improvements in service

maybe it's time for you to become involved. In order to make changes and improve things you have to become part of the system. Remember, it is impos- sible to please everyone, especially if the general consen- sus is to complain but not take any action. The mission statement of the

something to do, stop look- ing and come on down to the center. Don't spend all your off-duty time in your room - come over to the E-Club Saturday for the Holyfield-Tyson II fight party. The party is spon- sored by the SMP Council. Admission is free, and there will be a $5 all-you- can-eat barbecue. Doors open promptly at 2 p.m. Transportation will be pro- vided for those stationed at Camp Smith. This is going to be the biggest fight of the year and all Marines and Sailors are invited to be a part of it.
The base Rainbow Recycling Center here needs a creative volunteer to design and paint a new sign. The project entails drawing the sign and painting it on plywood or other material. All supplies will be furnished by the recycling center. If you are

Make boating safety a summer priority Base Safety
MCB Hawaii
Sgoodummer is here again, and as always, it's a time to talk about boating and other
water craft safety. .
A nationwide review of mishap reports reveals those who drink and water ski or jet ski are the ones most at risk of having a serious accident on the water. If you plan on doing any of these activ- ities, here are a few tips to do them safely. Alcohol and boating
Research shows four hours of exposure to noise, vibration, sun, glare, wind and other motion on the water produces "boater's hypnosis," which slows reaction time almost as much as if you were legally drunk. For instance, a boater is just finishing his second beer. His blood-alcohol
content is only one-third of what would make him legally drunk. But he has boater's hypnosis, and by drinking only two beers during the last hour, he increased his chances of having an accident.
Alcohol's effect on your balance can be critical on a boat; simply falling overboard and drowning accounts for one in four boating deaths. When you are even a little tipsy, the unstable, moving platform of the boat can cause you to fall over- board. Alcohol reduces your body's ability to pro- tect against the cold water and within minutes, you may not be able to call for help or swim to a float, the boat you fell out of or reach the shore.
Water skiing Each boat should be able to maintain a 200 -
foot wide ski corridor,100 feet on each side of the boat. The entire ski course should be at least 2,000 to 3,000 feet long to avoid constant turning
Holy blockbusters, Batman is back
Cpl. Steven Williams Combo, Corespondent
Holy mega-movies, it's Batman. And he's brought a couple of friends for the blockbuster movie
of the summer (so far). Val Kilmer's intrusion in the bat cave
nearly eliminated Batman's heroic char- acter with an "I'm to sexy for this mask" attitude in the last movie sequel, "Batman Forever." But George Clooney redeemed the man in black's honor this year in "Batman and Robin."
I have to admit l was skeptical when I saw the previews advertising Clooney's new role. He looked much too happy to play a serious superhero.
But the doctor proved his medicine is still potent even in a super hero role. He's still the handsome heartthrob the ladies fell in love with on television's ER, and with a no-nonsense attitude and some super skills, he filled Michael Keaton's "Batman," "Batman Returns,"
bat boots well. But Clooney wasn't the only
thing that brought Batman back better than ever. High-speed vehicle chases, acrobatic fighting and a whole new line of evil villains moviegoers keep every minute rolling with action.
One of the best attributes of the caped crusader's return was its comic book-like format. The awesome graphics and nail- biting stunts opened a whole new chap- ter in Batman's big screen appearances. Wha ever you do, don't get up from your seat. You'll miss the good stuff. The dominant bad guy, Arnold
Swarzenegger's Mr. Freeze, was a cool addition. Although his cold attitude causes havoc for Gotham City, his motive and downfall offer a wholesome lesson for us all. Real, heart-touching lessons are hard to find in action flicks. And don't worry fellow Arnold fans, his
puns are plentiful. In fact, I think the scriptwriters for Swarzenegger's other movies had a hand in writing his
and risky maneuvers. A minimum depth of six feet of obstacle-free water is nefPArsary to keep the skis from dragging during water starts.
Always have an observer on the boat. The dri- ver can't watch the skier and drive the boat safely at the same time. The American Water Ski Association recommends you equip your boat with a wide-angle rear view mirror.
Always wear a Coast Guard approved person- al floatation device designed for water skiing. The Coast Guard does not recommend ski belts; they are not approved floatation devices and will not keep your head out of the water should you be knocked unconscious.
Don't ski in rough water as the waves or chop- py seas will prevent the boat from keeping a steady course and speed, to say nothing of the impact of the skis themselves. Don't spray or
Movie Review
"Batman and Robin" lines. All the characters have puns of their own. Cheesy, yet satisfying.
Ooh, Uma Thurman. Her remark- able acting as the wicked, seduc- tive Poison Ivy made men in the audience long for her venom and women admire her sassy attitude.
Although Catwoman was a great character thanks to Michelle Pfiefer, Poison Ivy presented a much more believable character. Although the "mutant because of a science experiment gone bad" idea is overused, it works bet- ter than a bunch of cats munching on a corpse and it came to life in "Batman Returns." On the other side of the bat cave walls,
there's a new girl on the good guy's block. Far from "Clueless," Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl stole a few scenes as a bad blonde with attitude. Suprisingly, a girl who usually plays a
buzz swimmers, boats or other skiers. Never ski after dark. Not only is it extremely
dangerous, its illegal. Jet skis
The Coast Guard classifies jet skis as Class A inboard boats, which means they are subject to most of the same rules and regulations as any other power boat. PFDs are required for each person on board. Choose a well-fitting, Coast Guard approved PFD and wear it. Coast Guard and state rules also require you to have a fire extinguisher onboard. Jet ski operation is limited to daylight hours only.
Most craft have a lanyard connected to the start-stop switch. Never start the engine without attaching the other end of the lanyard to your wrist or your PFD. If you fall off, the engine auto- matically stops and your craft won't travel far.

The heroes of Gotham city return in over-anatomically cor- rect costumes to battle evil villians in "Batman and Robin."
dingbat filled the new role very well. Batman's sidekick, Chris O'Donnell,
made another good show as Robin. He still sported his overconfident attitude, but despite being stubborn and pig-head- ed, he taught Batman a lesson we should all heed more often in relationships.
A perfectly character-matched all-star cast, nonstop thrills and lessons for young and old alike make this movie a must-see. The world has a team of caped crusaders we can look forward to seeing again.

The search for a missing girl can sometimes lead to a boy. Child abductors have been known to dramatically
alter the identities of their victims. Through different dress. Drastic haircuts. Even forced behavior changes.
While looks can be manipulated, the psychological damages rarely go away. We're a free service specializing
in the worldwide recovery of missing children. For more information call 586-1449.

SOFTBALL From A- I
Joshua Powell, left fielder and Scotty Cobb, pitcher, all sent shots over the fence to pull the team over the Army 18-11.
Only two teams were left to do battle. A team of vic- tory-hungry Marines who had already suffered one loss. And a team of undefeated Sailors who knew they would have to be overcome twice to lose the trophy. The Marines jumped to a 14-9 win in the first game. "That took the wind out of their sails," said
Dominguez. "They thought they were going to beat us.
The. Marines weren't in the cleai yet - they had to win again. Jones and Macon led the Marines to a 15-9 victory. "This makes us feel good," said Dominguez. "Now
we can go to Okinawa, Japan with this beneath our belts."
The Hawaii Marine team is head to Okinawa for the annual Firecracker Tournament on the July 4 week- end and Marine Forces Pacific Regionals. "We're looking forward to bringing back gold from
there also," Dominguez concluded.
