Corps implements PME program

If you are not pursuing a program to further your pro- fessional military education, you may be at odds with the Commandant.

AAV detachment maximizes training Story and photos by Cpl. Brad Mitzelfelt

When a U.S. Navy am- phibious warship makes a pitstop here, 1st MEB ele- ments scramble to get a piece of the action. Such was the case last month when 3rd Marines received the word that the USS Cleveland (LPD-7) was coming to town.

Marines from Charlie Co. (Reinforced), 1st Bn., 3rd Marines, were the first to arrive onboard the ship to take part in an amphibious training evolution Oct. 27 and 28.

In order to get roughly 100 infantry troops to the shore, 3rd Marines called upon the assault amphibian vehicle de- tachment for its support.

The detachment is the only AAV detachment in the Marine Corps. Larger AAV battalions are located at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Camp Lejeune, N.C. The remaining AAVs belong to the 1st Armored Assault Battalion on Okinawa, Ja- pan.

The detachment supports 3rd Marines in amphibious as well as mechanized (land transport) operations. Its AAVs are the only ones in Hawaii, according to 1stLt. Chip Cardon, the detachment's executive offi- cer. Each of the detach- ment's two AAV platoons are capable of transporting a re- inforced infantry company.

Due to the scarcity of amphibious shipping here, the detachment drafted up a plan to maximize the train- ing advantages of the ship and the infantry troops that were available, according to detachment Commanding Officer Capt. Joel Ashinhurst. The plan called for the de- tachment's Marines to "swim" 7 LVTP-7A-1 person- nel vehicles along with one LVTR-7A-1 recovery vehicle and one LVTC-7A-1 com- mand vehicle from Fort Hase Beach to the beach at Bel-

lows Air Force Station the night of Oct. 25.

"It'll be heavy, but fun," lstLt. Cardon said during a break from sifting. through stacks of exercise paperwork on his desk a week before splash time.

"The CO's philosophy is that high morale is attained through the accomplishment of difficult tasks," he added.

And the outline of the mission did look difficult. The night swim. to Bellows was a first for the detach- ment, as was the "extended swim" home. "Usually, the vehicles don't stay in the water longer than two hours," 1stLt. Cardon said. The extended march, around the Kaneohe Peninsula and through the bay, was ex- pected to take close to four hours.

The tractor's two waterjets are capable of propelling it for a total of six to seven hours at six knots (covering a dis- tance of about 55 miles). Their 400 horse-power turbo- supercharged diesel engines can cover about 300 miles of road on tracked running gear at a cruising speed of 25 miles per hour. The vehicles can carry 25 combat troops or 10,000 pounds of equipment on land, and up to 18 fully loaded combat troops in the water. They can operate in rough seas, and plunge surf up to 10 feet high.

The detachment's new AAV training is being done in accordance with Marine Corps AAV requirements for battalion landing teams operating out of Camp Pendleton, Camp Lejeune and Okinawa. The units are required to be "special opera- tions capable." Special operations include amphibi- ous raids and non-combat- ant evacuations, among others. For the AAV Ma- rines, this primarily means they must be capable of piloting their vehicles on land and in water, both during

HAWAII MARINE November 17, 1988

CONFIRMATION - GySgt. Richard Vega, Assault Amphibian Detachment platoon check his radio with the other tractors bet' the beach during the pre-dawn assault.

OFF TO WORK - The ten tractors head toward the USS Cleveland the morning

the day and at night. Since some of the infantry

battalions stationed here participate in the Unit De- ployment Program, the de- tachment must be trained in these special capacities in order to help prepare the infantry battalions for de- ployment, 1stLt. Cardon explained.

Kicking off their first such "special operation" at 11 p.m. Oct. 25, the AAVs rolled down the Fort Hase beach into high tide. They made their first night swim to Bellows in approximately an hour and a half.

The detachment spent the night at the beach there, sleeping on top of, around, and inside their AAVs. The next morning, the unit had classes and performed main- tenance on the tractors. That afternoon, as well as later that night, they fired up their vehicles and rehearsed the beach assaults they would execute the next day.

On Oct. 27, reveille was sounded at 5 a.m. On the black horizon, the Marines could see a small cluster of amber lights-the USS Cleveland -awaiting their arrival.

About two hours later, they swam their vehicles to the ship and prepared for the first

assault of the day. The morning assault was cancelled due to trouble with a safety boat. The afternoon assault was launched at 2 p.m.

The 10 AAVs splashed off the stern of the ship, pitch- ing and yawing their way toward the shore in single file through a "hole" in the coral reef that Marines from Co. A, 3rd Reconnaissance Bn. had marked the night before.

After clearing the reef, which acted as the first surf zone, the AAVs reached the normal surf zone (closer to the beach) where they made a right column movement. When all the tractors were parallel to the shore, they had reached the "final coor- dination line"-the point at which the fictitious Naval gunfire support ceased. The vehicles then made a flank- ing movement and com- menced "battle speed" the last 200 meters to the shore.

"At that point, time is of the essence, gentlemen," Platoon Commander GySgt. Richard Vega told the detach- ment Marines afterward. "You're moving targets out there. If it takes you two minutes to get to the beach, then that's two minutes the enemy has to sight-in on you."

"Taking incoming" is of particular concern to Marines who work with AAVs due to the vehicles armor, which is much lighter than that of other armored personnel carriers. The only weapon onboard an AAV is a .50 cal. machine gun.

The AAVs' running gear hit the beach and the tractors accelerated out of the water They cut through the sand and up the beach 50 meters

to a treeline. There, the Charlie Co. Marines scam- pered off the rear ramps and infiltrated the woods.

Just before dawn Friday morning, Oct. 28, the troop- filled AAVs once again plunged off the ship into the Pacific, steaming toward the beach.

"This is where the Navy and the Marine Corps have to act as a team," said Capt. Ashinhurst. "We couldn't make a pre-dawn landing all by ourselves. We need the Navy-especially at night-to help guide us, because they have radar.

"We also need Marine reconnaissance elements or Seals to do their job of

marking lanes and marking the beach. We need the Navy to give us good vectors from the ship, and we need our people to maintain their proper intervals," the captain added.

The AAVs traveled single file at 50-meter intervals. They filed through the coral reef, made a column move- ment to the right to get all the tractors on line, then flanked and headed toward the beach. Before getting there, the formation once again flanked into a right

of Oct. 27.

column and moved down the beach 200 meters before flanking for the last time.

"There were people on the beach where we were origi- nally going to hit it," 1stLt. Cardon explained.

After re-routing the final stage of the assault to avoid the spectators and rolling up the beach, the AAV Marines hit the water again at 8:45 to take the "long way" home. The extended swim lasted about two hours and 45 minutes-considerably less time than the allotted foui hours.

"It went super," lstLt. Cardon said.

While the extended swim and the night swim covered new ground for the detach, ment, other territory was alsti explored for the first time by the majority of its Marines, though not for the detach- ment itself, according to GySgt. Vega. He explained that most of the detach- ment's work with ships had been done off Fort Haie Beach, and that the difficulty this time was increased due to the reef configuration at Bellows and the added bur- den of embark troops. The pre-dawn assault was new to

Marine Barracks Sunset Parade a solemn tribute By Sgt. B. S. Little

CAMP H. M. SMITH, Hawaii-Amidst gray skies and the threat of Hawaii's first winter storm this year, the leathernecks of Marine Barracks, Hawaii welcomed nearly 200 guests to their recent Sunset Parade.

As the sun faded against the backdrop of the Barracks, two guard companies of Marines, one from Guard Company West Loch and another from Wahiwa, per-

formed in the ceremony honoring the Corps' 213th birthday.

The Sunset Parade is a Marine Corps tradition passed down from the "old- est post in the Corps," Marine Barracks, Eighth and I Street, Washington, D.C. It is there that the sunset parade and silent drill team demonstration was first per- formed in 1901 for the Com- mandant, in honor of the birthday of the Corps.

STANDING BY - The FMFPac Saluting Battery stands ready to render a canon salute.

Though there isn't a docu- mented source as to when the tradition landed on Oahu, old timers say that the Sunset Parade at Marine Barracks, Hawaii began in the early seventies. That was well after the Marine Command at Honolulu, consisting of six officers and 183 enlisted men, moved in August, 1914. Their current home is a 49-acre tract of land at Pearl Harbor.

The tradition continued here with a 15-minute con- cert by the FMFPac Band. Then, a decommissioned ship's bell was tolled three times, marking the beginning of the parade.

During the ceremony, ri

Finally, under a brief shower, a more serious moment settled over the

parade grounds as the cere- monial sounding of Echo Taps was played by two buglers.

The Sunset Parade is a tradition not designed solely to entertain or for pomp and

Gallon cans full of hydraulic fluid replaced the traditional baton in the relay race. The Marines did their best attempting to run around a desig- nated course handing off their cum- bersome loads.

LOOK MA- LCpI. Brian Taylor -takes 2 minutes 32 seconds to -field strip this M-16 A2.

Another highlight of the competi- tion was the "fighter-car pull." Nine- teen Marines pulled and pushed a classic "Oldsmobile 442" 50 yards across Platt Field for the fastest time.

According to Maj. Rick Guidry, the squadron's executive officer, a jet fighter was kind of hard to come by for the event, so the "fighter-car" was the next best thing

Maj. Guidry said the idea of the "Death Angel" field meet came about at the beginning of October. "The squadron was given an incentive to meet their flight time goal of 213 hours by the end of the month.

As the meet came to an end, careful planning was instituted to ensure the originality of the meet was not lost. There was not only an award for the winners, but also for the losers. As a result of earning last place, a platoon had the dubious pleasure of cleaning up after the picnic.

RECORD/from A-1

After the four in the kneeling, 2ndLt. Hudson shot in the black until his final round in the standing posi- tion, when he hit another four. "I call that my attitude shot-just knowing that it was my final shot [in the off- hand]," he said.

He left the 200 yard-line after dropping only two points-his best performance of the week. The least amount of points he had dropped from there before had been four.

After shooting a possible of 75 points at the 300 yard- line, 2ndLt. Hudson moved to the 500.

He hit black ten-for-ten at the 500, giving him a 248 and a new range record. The old range record was 247.

After recovering from the shock of having set the new range record, 2ndLt. Hudson returned to his unit. Once the news of what he did spread, he was "bay qualified"-thrown into Kaneohe Bay-by a large group of Marines.

VMFA -235 puts in

Cpl. David Kershberg photo

HEADING HOME - The Marines of VMFA-235 complete the final mile of their tribute to the Marine Corps.

Story and photo by Cpl. David Kershberg

While the 1st MEB stood in formation awaiting the cake cutt.ng ceremony Nov. 10, VMFA-235 finished a 213- mile run around Oahu in com- memoration of the Marine Corps' 213th birthday.

The run, which promoted CFC and the Aloha United Way, began here Nov. 9 at 2:16 a.m.

The squadron was split into I 17 teams consisting of six Marines each. Each team ran an average of 12.5 miles.

Each team had two indi-

viduals running at all times. The other four runners rode in a safety vehicle which accompanied the team the entire length of the run. The runners ran until one needed relief, at which time he would raise his hand. The safety vehicle would then pull for- ward and drop off another runner. The relieved runner then got in the vehicle until it was his turn once again.

When a team finished its assigned leg, the next team was already in place -to take over.

The run went on through the night Nov.9 and into the

next morning. By then, the squadron was slightly ahead of schedule.

Just before 9 a.m., the entire squadron formed up near the front gate of the Air Station, watching for the final team to come into sight.

The unit's guidon, which was carried throughout the run, was handed from the final team to the command- ing officer, LtCol. C.E. Sooy.

Completing the final mile together, the squadron's arrival at Platt Field was just in time for the cutting of the birthday cake.

Her brother had Duchenne Muscu- lar Dystrophy. Which means that though she herself is unaffected by the disease, she could be carrying it in her genes.

And if she is, there's a one-in- four chance her child will inherit Duchenne.

One of the most common and devastating forms of muscular dys- trophy, Duchenne is usually passed from mother to child by a defective gene. The task of MDA researchers is to find that gene. And right now they're so close that MDA is pour- ing all possible resources into the quest.

Once the gene for Duchenne is identified, carriers can be identi- fied, too-with 100% certainty. And the first major step towarc finding a cure will have been taken.

K-Bay Klippers lose game, first place Story and photos by Sgt. Joe P. Jascur

The K-Bay Klipper Women's Soccer Club played an important game against their

4111 arch rivals - the Iola Pink Panthers Sunday to keep their first place standing. With their backs and their 4- 0-1 record against the wall, the women lost a heart- breaker, 2-1.

The Klippers came out fired up the first-half , drawing blood within the first five minutes of the game. Striker Sheryl Vidaurri sent the sphere into the nets with a picture-perfect head-ball over the Panther's goalie. The Klippers enjoyed the 1 to nil lead for only 10 minutes when one of their own players sent the ball into the goal on a

"fluke" corner kick play by the ladies in pink.

The second-half became a mid-field nightmare as both teams kept each other from getting close enough for a goal.

With approximately 20 min- utes left in the second-half, the Pink Panthers scored on a controversial play by a Pink Panther and Klipper goalie Fu-Hwe "Fay" Sipe, Sipe had come out of the goal to beat a Panther to the ball - they collided - and the ball rolled into the goal. The controversy developed when Sipe had pos- session of the ball (possession constitutes just a hand on the ball), and the Panther player ran into Sipe ,causing her to loose the ball and sustain an

Senior Pro-Am Golf Tournament at the Kaneohe Klipper Course

The Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course will host its first Senior Pro-Am here Nov. 27. The Senior Pro-Am, featuring 18 of the top PGA Senior Tour players such as Lee Elder, Billy Casper, and many others, will be pairing up five entrants with each of these golf legends for an unforget- table one-round scramble tourney..

the pro-shop by sequence will receive priority for participa- tion. Only 90 slots are avail- able.

Entry fees for a chance to "talk golf" with the pros are: Active duty, retired military, and their dependents - $150; Civilians - $350.

The entry fee includes a pairing party Nov..26, 6 p.m. at the Officers' club for all entrants and one guest each. The teams will be formed through a draw system.

On tournament day, check- in will be at 7 a.m., followed by a Continental Breakfast, photo session, and golf clinic. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. A luncheon/awards cer- emony, for players only, will follow the tourney approxi- mately 1 p.m. at the Officers' club.

Entry forms can be picked up at the Station Gym, and Klipper Golf Course. For more information, call Chuck Lar- son at the Klipper course at 254-1745.

t

eye injury . This play not only sidelined the Klippers' goalie and victory, but slowed their chance to finish first in the league.

The chance for a first-place finish is hanging by a thread- due to the fact that the Pan- thers have not lost a game and have given the Klippers their only loss and tie.

"I'm very pleased with the ladies' performance this year," said Peter Edwards, K- Bay Klipper coach. "Coming from fifth-place to second - place in only two seasons is a great accomplishment."

Hawaii's Special Olympics program honors

WICAS3 Kaneohe Bay

Marine Corps Air Station,Kaneohe Bay has received the "Outstanding Organization Award" for year-round support of Hawaii's Special Olympics program for handicapped children.

The citation reads, "...It is through the efforts of many wonderful people that Hawaii Special Olympics continues to thrive. It is because of your dedication and caring for Special Olympics that your area nominated you in the Category of Outstanding Organization for 1988."

Through the course of the 1988 Special Olympics competition, many Air Stations Marines dedicated their off- duty time coaching, chaperoning and serving in other volunteer billets for area schools. They raised money for Special Olympics and made a training camp at Kokakahi possible.

Marines from the Provost Marshall's Office pitched in and helped the Honolulu Police Department in a run that carried the Special Olympics torch around the island. Marines ran the torch through the Air Station and carried it over the Pali Highway into Aloha Stadium.

The Air Station has been a strong supporter of the Hawaii Special Olympics for the past five years, according to Glen Beachy, an official with the organization.

Hawaii Special Olympics is a program of sports training and athletic competition for the mentally handicapped. It is a non-profit program funded completely through donations and supported by sponsors, charities and volunteers. The program sponsors year round sporting events in bowling, basketball, soccer, swimming, track and field, and even ice skating.

Hawaii's Special Olympics, which currently has about 1,000 active participants, is a member of the Special Olympics program founded in 1968 by the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation.

CARRIER OF THE WEEK This week's exceptional HAWAII MARINE "Carrier of

the Week" is 11-year-old Blair Penny. Blair has been provid- ing excellent service for 10 months.

"I have learned a lot from my job," Blair said. "Besides learning to meet deadlines, I have learned how to keep track of my money. It is a lot of fun getting paid, too. I have been able to save some of my earnings for college and spend some on clothes and skateboards.

"When I finish my college education, I would like to become a professional skateboarder and one day have my own skat- ing business. Or I might like to become a lawyer. Last year at school I was in a mock trial and it was pretty fun. My side won, too," he said smiling.

Carrier of the week receives a

FREE Whopper Meal!

The HAWAII MARINE, Hawaii's leader in community news coverage, is delivered by car- rier each week to all homes and apartments in our distribution area.

Your carrier is an independent business per- son who has entered into an agreement to pro- vide his or her customers with good delivery service.

Every four weeks, your carrier will call on you, and your voluntary $1 payment is a way of rewarding him or her for a job well done, in addition to providing an added incentive for excellent delivery service.

The young person pictured above is a local business person -a HAWAII MARINE car- rier. Most likely, delivering the HAWAII MARINE to you each week is a beginning busi- ness venture for your carrier. But, it's also an important educational experience, and as a customer o f this carrier, you can help make this experience a way to genuine achievement and growth.

If you have any comments about your deliv- ery service, please call 235-5881.

The HAWAII MARINE has openings for carriers. Responsible HAWAII MARINE workers can earn $15.00-$45.00 per month for only one delivery each week. If you want a business route of your own near your neigh- borhood, please mail in the application for information.

LEGAL/from A-7 products, pay particular at- tention, once again, to the annual percentage rate and the truth-in-lending state- ment, but also whether there is a warranty or not. Most new products are covered by factory warranties that in- clude defects involving me- chanical parts of the prod- uct.

Ap for used products, most are sold by private individu- als without a warranty or "as is." This means that if you have a problem with the product after you buy it, you must pay for any needed repairs yourself. The individ- O 1988 Gencral Foods Corp.

ual has no further responsi- bility for the product once the sale is complete.

Under federal and state law, almost every purchase you make from a merchant is covered by an implied war- ranty unless the seller tells you in writing that implied warranties do not apply. The most common type of implied warranty is called a warranty of merchantability. This means that the seller prom- ises that the product will do what it is supposed to do. For example, a car will run; a toaster will toast.

Another type of implied warranty is the warranty of

fitness for a particular pur- pose. This applies when you buy a product on the advice that it is suitable for a particular use. For example, a dealer who suggests that you buy a specific vehicle for hauling a trailer warrants, in effect, that the vehicle will be suitable for hauling a trailer.

It is a consumer jungle, outside the main gate. Remember, read, think, and understand before you sign anything. If you have any questions regarding consumer contracts, warranties, or defective consumer products, visit the Legal Assistance Section at the Legal Services.
