STUDENT COUNCIL

The Student Council is the executive board of the student government organiza-

tion, one member elected by the non-fraternity group and one faculty represen-

tative appointed by the President of the College.

One of the principle assignments of the Student Council is to meet at the begin-

ning of each semester to determine the allocation of the student activity funds

among the various campus activities and organizations. The budgets prepared are

then published so that all students may know for what purposes their fees are

being used.

FRESHMEN PLEDGE

Freshman Orientation

The Freshman Class of 1967 arrived, and the campustook on a maroon look as a thousand beanies were issued.

For one week, the campus belonged only to the freshmen

and their counselors. In one week, freshmen suffered through

the pandemonium of registration and the bookstore line,

met friends they will keep for years, and acquainted them-

selves with the campus in general. Social events included

a torch-light parade, the Freshman Tea, and the Freshman

Mixer. All this consumed their time for five days. Then the

upperclassmen arrived, and many freshmen were heard to

give a sigh of relief. After surviving Orientation Week,

they were ready to face the regular routine of college life.

Fairmont State's mighty football Falcons, a team that

never lost its courage in the face of adversity or never

quit when they found themselves behind, wound up the

ference title and an unprecedented National Championship.

The Falcons showed their superiority over 500 memberschools in the NAIA.

Several members of the champs received special recog-

nition for their efforts. Head football coach, Harold S.

"Deacon" Duvall, led the way by being named small col-

lege coach of the year by the influential Washington Touch-

down Club. Deacon was also named West Virginia Coach of

the Year for an unheard of third time and was named NAIACoach of the Year.

Two Falcon seniors were named to past season Ail-

American squads. Guard Dave Williams was named to the

Associated Press small college All-America Squad while

star fullback Larry Blackstone was named to the NAIAmythical squad.

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH"Deacon" Duvall

This year Coach "Deacon" Duvall realized several

dreams which he has kept in the back of his mind for sev-

eral years. "Deacon" proved that West Virginia Con-

ference football teams could compete with any small col-

lege team in the nation.

Coach Duvall has long desired that area football fans

would grow to appreciate FSC's brand of football. East-

West Stadium was filled to capacity when the Falcons met

Waynesburg and a fine crowd was on hand for the semi-

final game with Northern Michigan. A second dream that

Coach Duvall has had was to bring a national champi-

onship back to the college on the hill.

Duvall came to Fairmont State in 1952 and since that

time has compiled a record of 99 victories, 30 defeats,

and 3 ties. Included in this record are seven WVIAC Con-

ference championships and this year a NAIA national title.

Duvall attended local schools, graduating from Fair-

mont State College and Columbia University where he ob-

tained his M.A. degree.

WVIAC Basketball ChampsIn what was supposed to be a rebuilding year, Coach

Joe Retton turned in what has to be called his greatest

coaching job ever. With the graduation of all time leading

scorer Dave Miller and the loss of scoring ace Bill Moodybefore the season started, most people wrote the Falcons

off for the 1967-68 Basketball campaign.

Lacking size and a big scorer the Falcons concentrated

on a stingy defense along with a fast break offense and

scrapped their way to the regular season championship.

The Falcons lost to Morris Harvey in the championship

round of the tournament forcing a three game play off.

FSC won two straight games to clinch their trip to the

NAIA Tournament in Kansas City.

Fairmont State entered the tournament with a 21-5 rec-

ord. Leading the scoring attack for the roundballers were

John Jamerson with a 22.7 average, Wayne Denham with a

a 17.3 average and Dave Shaffer with 16.1. Other Fal-

cons scoring in double figures were Don Prickett— 1 2.5,

Pat Sloan— I 1.0, and Dave Gardner— I 0.6.

In addition to potent scoring, Denham pulled down 2 1 .9

rebounds per game, which put him among NAIA leaders in

this department. Denham grabbed a high of 34 rebounds

in a game against DSE.

This was the Falcons second trip to the NAIA basketball

tourney in three years. FSC finished fourth in a 32 team

field in 1965.

At press time the Falcons were awaiting the beginning

of the NAIA Tournament in Kansas City.

Morris Harvey and Fairmont continued their fierce basketball

rivalry with the Falcons taking the measure of the Golden Ea-

gles on the home bench while they defeated FSC in Charles-

ton. Fairmont State edged the Charleston boys 3-2 in the

overall season series.

As usual Wheeling gave Fairmont a mighty battle

but the Falcons did manage to break Wheeling's

home floor jinx which had dated back to the 1965

season.

88

West Liberty had the distinction

of ending Fairmont's nine game

winning streak in handing the Fal-

cons their first defeat of the

season.

But Morris Harvey didn't have quite enough to take

the title . . . What a season for those Falcons.

WVIAC Player of the Year

The Falcon baseball team of Coach "Squibb" Wilson made their way into NAIA

recognition during the 1967 diamond season. FSC captured the WVIAC champi-

onship in a double elimination series with West Virginia Tech and West Liberty. The

Falcon's won three straight games in the rain delayed series to earn the right to en-

ter NAIA Regional competition at Millersville, Pa.

Ace pitcher Tom Schweitzer was the mainstay of the Falcon staff and was named

baseball player of the year in the WVIAC Conference. Jim Mertens led the con-

ference in hitting by consistantly hitting around the 450 mark all season long with

several tape-measure home runs.

The Falcons entered the regionals at Millersville against the cream of the crop in

NAIA Baseball. The Falcons dropped their first game of the series, therefore put-

ting them at an immediate disadvantage. Characterizing that "never say die" atti-

tude that has become synonymous with Fairmont State athletics, the diamondmen

won three straight games to enter the finals against once beaten, by the Falcons,

Glassboro, New Jersey. Having to play three games in one day took its toll on FSC

and they dropped the final game. The Falcon baseball team however once again

proved the superiority of WVIAC athletics and finished with an outstanding I 5-3

record.

Golf

Fairmont State's Golf team, coached by Dr. J. Martin Taylor, had another pretty

good season with several returning lettermen from the 1966 squad. Leading the

way for the Falcon linkmen were Jim Mallamo, Ron Million, Steve Mikulski, and

Tom Mikulski.

In the WVIAC Championship Golf Tournament held at Ogleby Park in Wheeling,

the Falcons finished eighth in a field of eleven. Fairmont had a score of 324 com-

tionally with Kappa Sigma Kappa a national social

fraternity. In August 1962, Kappa Sigma Kappa

and Theta Xi fraternities merged.

Theta Xi was nationally founded on April 29,

1864, at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, Troy,

New York to develop a spirit of enduring fellow-

ship and to render free and energetic participa-

tion in social and all college activities.

"What To Do With a Drunken Sailor"

The history of the Song Fest dates back to the spring of 1949 when it began as

a competitive measuring stick among the sororities on campus. It was carried onin the spring of the following year but was dropped in 1951. After an alternating

sequence of being presented, and not being presented, the Song Fest was revived

by an invitation for the fraternities on campus to take part and compete under a

men's division. Since that time the Song Fest has had continuous success, being

presented every year except 1958. Below are the winners for the various years.
