a message from DaytimeAs the academy best known for handing out the prestigious Emmy award and establishing the standard of
excellence for all programming, we are in a rather unique position to take a leadership role in the area of new media. With emerging and converging technologies, and multi-platform distribution capabilities, we recognize that the medium is changing and that quality content is available in many forms. The hope is to empower and inspire content creators and the next generation of aspiring creatives, whether by initiating an inter-media dialogue, building bridges through the new media academy, the National Academy of Media Arts and Sciences, or awarding Emmys for innovative content. We are even making changes internally to keep our finger on the digital pulse and remain relevant in this ever changing landscape.
As networks, newspapers, magazines and telcos explore new media outlets and multi-platform distribution becomes not only commonplace, but now necessary to capture a target audience, the Academy, too, has taken a number of steps to engage and expand our community digitally. For the very first time this year, submissions for entry and applications for judging for the Daytime Emmys were completed electronically. Though a small task, it was an important, environmentally responsible one. As expected, we were met with both receptiveness and resistance. (You know who you are!) Our goal was to familiarize the community with the new technology and hope next year to convert to an entirely electronic process with viewing and voting capabilities at just the click of a mouse. In this culture of immediacy, where everything is available on-demand, we can really make the Emmys more accessible to a larger community of professionals, many of whom we could not otherwise engage.
In addition to streamlining and enhancing the Awards processes, we have also expanded our Awards categories to include “New Approaches” to programming. The New Approaches categories emphasize innovative production techniques and the use of media enhancement to support content. Entries can be both broadcast and broadband, but the common denominator is quality. Next year, all categories will be open to programming regardless of distribution platform, as we continue to work to refine our Awards to resonate with the industry.
The Academy’s final undertaking this year was to begin to create a digital archive of special Emmy moments and ceremony highlights that have never before been available to the larger public except during the live telecast.
