A platform which brings together spaces, people and possibilities

the context The expansion of cities, in association with global warming and global access to water, is the most important and decisive problem that our generation will follow over the next 35 years.

How to plan, host and maintain competitive metropolises that will recive 84% of the global population until 2050, according to the UN? Only in the urban space, will be 6.5 billion people vying for housing, resources and jobs within a context even more challenging for the planet.

the context

The most troubling thing is that 80% of this growth will be in emerging countries, Brazil’s case. In many cities here, like Sao Paulo, this means that the population can double or even triple. Something manageable, even when you have a view that in sub-Saharan Africa, for example, some cities will grow in size seven to eight times between now and 2040 .

the context

the contextOn recent decades the large and medium cities and its metropolitan areas went through very similar socioespaciais dynamics. There was widespread drop of rates of population growth and the increase of population in these cities was quite uneven between the districts and municipalities in its metropolitan regions.

On the one hand, there was loss of population in the districts of the central areas, with infrastructure, and, on the other hand, significant growth in the districts and peripheral municipalities, precarious and environmentally fragile areas. While the central areas lost population, suburbs and peripheral municipalities centres grew at rates that exceeded 10% per year.

the context Today, the urban centers of these cities remain areas of high concentration of jobs in metropolitan scale, but present significant number of buildings and empty and underutilized households .

the contextSo, social movements linked to the theme of urban and housing reform, technicians and scholars who historically focused in the fight for more demands related to the problems of the periphery, urbanization and slum regularization and lots, today have as flag in defense of housing and culture-related activities in central areas.

the context Demanding the implementation of a housing policy with mixed uses, which revert the historical logic of settlement of the low- income population in the outskirts and help cities move towards a more equitable and sustainable socio-spatial configuration.

To conduct our proposal, we first reflected on this questions and mobility itself. Numerous proposals already exist to improve transportation system efficiency, quality and smartness. For sure, reduce mobility environmental impact and enhance the proportion of collective and environment friendly transports are major issues for Rio de Janeiro and the other large metropolises of our time.

the context

Yet, more and more, an integrated vision of mobility should be encouraged as the next step for further reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and better quality of life for all. In our view, this comprehensive reflection on mobility include the study of transport systems in relation with the places they are leading to, that is to say, the different parts of the city.

Commuting is part of the daily life of millions of urban dwellers. It goes along with pollutants, noise, ground vibrations and an intense and chaotic traffic. the context

Rather than focusing on how to reduce the outcomes of bad mobility conditions, we framed our reflection around its cause :

an inefficient allocation of people, activities and places.

Compact mixed-use nodes reduce journey requirements and creat lively sustainable neighbourhoods

the context

The case of Rio de Janeiro is particularly striking: Cariocas commute everyday to offices and shops in downtown, but at night and in the week-end, the place gets progressively empty, because most of people working there do not leave in this low density area.

However, places to occupy do not miss vacant lots or abandoned buildings to be renovated. As most of these buildings are the reminiscence of the architecture history of the city, the local patrimony is decaying. Meanwhile, the municipality and landlords are struggling to incentivize a new use of these spaces, but lack ideas, public or means. This story could be told in most of the large city of the world.

the context

the context On the other hand, urbanites are looking for a new use of space, more flexible, more connected and more accessible. New relations between the users and the place they want to occupy are emerging.

the concept By bringing these habits within places those lack a proper use, we seek at fostering a coherent organization of the city space that would improve mobility in two ways:

Reduce the need of commuting and hence improving global mobility conditions in the city

Imagine and organize new kinds of mobility, capitalizing of a temporary and flexible use of space and buildings.

The idea is to provide abandoned spaces in the center and on the city’s outskirts with purchasers and productive use. Spaces could be devoted functions such as housing, work or leisure. Each space and/or use would fit to a specific group of costumers, according to their profile, ideas and necessities.

the concept The entire process would be organized and managed through a website and eventually an applicative for smartphones. Our platform would gather people according to common interests, nature and duration of their project, and location, thus facilitating the creation of groups.

THE CHAT PERFORMS A PRODUCTIVE MEETING BETWEEN PHYSICAL SPACES AND VIRTUAL WORLDS, CATALYZES EXISTING ENERGIES TO CREATE A CITY MORE EFFICIENT, INCLUSIVE AND ATTRACTIVE ...OPERATES ON A LOCAL LEVEL BY STRENGTHENING AND CREATING MICRO RELATIONS, LINKS BETWEEN PEOPLE, SPACES AND IDEASTHAT IS WHAT IS MOST PRECIOUS TO PRESERVE IN OUR CITIES AND IN OUR URBAN CULTURE

the contents

Our platform is a tool of connection between people and places according to the needs of urbanites and of urbanism. It promotes a new understanding of real estate mechanisms, not only guided by the market but rather by a more human, creative and flexible way of thinking the space and its use. Our times struggle with mobility in terms of better and cleaner mass transportation system. We argue that the future should deal with a softer mobility (walking and bicycling), made possible by a better organization of the urban space, a space that would be thought at the scale of humans.
