Basic game (medium difficulty)

The first player opensa bouquet card with 4flowers and observesthe flowers it containsand their positionswithout the otherplayers seeing thecard.

Then s/he places the bouquetcard turned upside down onthe table so no one can see itand opens the flower shop. (Ifyou use the pocket on thefront of the flower shop, thenthe bouquet card is placed intothe pocket hidden, instead ofbeing placed on the table)

The player chooses a flowercard that s/he thinks wasinside the bouquet card. S/heplaces it in the flower shopcard in the place where s/heremembers that the specificcolor and type of flower wason the bouquet card.

BLOOMING FLOWERS

Then s/he closes theflower shop and givesit together with thebouquet card upside down (closed) to theplayer to his/her left.

The next player opens and looks at the bouquet card and, having observed theflowers well, turns the bouquet card upside down. Like before, s/he opens theflower shop, selects a flower card and places it in the position s/he thinks is theright one. Then s/he closes the flower shop and gives it with the bouquet cardto the player to his/her left.

The game continues thisway until the playershave created inside thecard of the flower shop,a bouquet with the samenumber of flowers as thecard with the bouquet (inthis case 4 flowers). Thenthe players have to checkif they succeeded tocreate the correctbouquet or not.

If all the cards with flowers are correct regarding their position, color, type of flower the players win the first round and continue to the next. In the nextround the first player opens a card with a bouquet from the pile of 5 flowers. If one or more cards with flowers are not correct in terms of the position, color, type of flower the players continue to the next round of the game but the firstplayer opens once more a card with bouquet with the same number of flowers(in our example 4 flowers)

Step 4

Step 5

BLOOMING FLOWERS

The player sitting on the left of the playerthat played last starts the new round.Similar to before s/he will look carefully atthe card, turn it upside down so no onecan see it, open the flower shop card andthen select and place a flower card on it.Similar to before, the game will proceedwith the next players until 5 flower cardsare placed. If the group completes thebouquet correctly, they proceed to abouquet card with a larger number offlowers and so on until they complete abouquet with 8 flowers.

1. If a player observes that there is amistake in the position of one or moreflowers s/he can change the positionand then place his or her flower card.2. If a player observes that a flowercard is totally wrong (wrong type orcolor) then s/he can put it out of thecard of the flower shop (back in themiddle of the table) and place anothercard of flower. But then s/he can’t putone more flower in the flower shop.

BLOOMING FLOWERS

Easy level

Difficult level (recommended for intergenerational game)

One player mode

For people with advanced dementia (reduced memory and observation) thefollowing variant is recommended. The player keeps open both the card with the bouquet and the card of the Flowershop so as to select the correct flower card.If the other players are able to play the basic game or difficult game mode they cando it in their round and keep supporting the people with dementia by letting themlook at the open cards in their rounds.

For people with mild mental disorders or for younger people playing with peoplewith dementia the game could become even more difficult. However, it is better tomake it more difficult only for them and not for people with dementia.More specifically, these players look at the bouquet card once at the beginning ofeach round and play when it is their turn without seeing it again. This makes it evenharder to remember the right flowers and the right places.

They game can be transformed to apuzzle. The player opens a bouquetcard. The s/he opens the Flower Shopcard and tries to pick the correctflower cards and place them on thecorrect position. In each round theplayer can open a new card from apile with bouquets with more flowersor not.

Easy level

The player opens a card with a bouquet. Thens/he closes it and opens the card of the Flowershop. The player selects a flower card andplaces it in a position. Then s/he closes the Flower shop card andopens the Bouquet card. S/he observes it for a few minutes and closes it again. S/he opensthe Flower shop card, selects a flower card and places it. This continues until the playerhas created a bouquet inside the Flower shopcard with the same number of flowers as thebouquet card. Then, the player opens both thebouquet card and the Flower shop card andchecks the color, type and position of eachflower. If everything is correct the player winsand continues with a bouquet card with moreflowers. If there is a mistake the player opensonce more a bouquet card with the samenumber of flowers. In each round s/he canincrease the number of flowers on the cardswith the bouquets depending on whether s/hehas completed the bouquet correctly or not.

BLOOMING FLOWERS

Other modes of the game

The players have to create all thebouquets with the 4 flowers (they don’t use the bouquets cards with 5flowers or more)

The players have to createonly 3 bouquets of 4,5 and 6flowers ( bouquet cards with7 and 8 flowers are excludedfrom the game)

The player opens a bouquetcard. S/he observes it for a fewminutes and then closes it.Then the player opens theFlower shop card. S/he selectsflower cards and places theminto the Flower shop card. When s/he thinks the bouquetis finished s/he opens thebouquet card and checks theresults. If everything is correct, the player wins and continueswith a bouquet card with moreflowers. Benefits for people with dementia

For Severe Dementia and middle Dementia stages, easier modes arerecommendedFor the early dementia stage the difficult level is recommendedFor Mild cognitive impairment, a very difficult level is recommendedDuring intergenerational game workshops a mix of easy, medium and difficultlevels is recommended depending on the skills of each player.

Enjoyment of the challenge

In this way, the game becomes an intergenerationalactivity that may in the long run benefit people withdementia also on a behavioral level but also reduce thefeeling of loneliness they may experience.

During the game, and especially if players of differentages participate in it, younger players are suggested toencourage discussion with people with dementia so thatthey can recall memories and stories from their lives.

BLOOMING FLOWERS

The main objective of this game, as well as of all the gamesdeveloped in this project, is to act as an alternative method of

intervention addressed to the mental and behavioral symptomsof people with dementia in a pleasant and playful way.

Also, games can serve as an inclusive activity, raising awarenessabout dementia and reducing the stigma and social exclusion of

people with dementia.
