Bemrnini's books

IN his introduction to the publication in 1981 of Gianlorenzo Bernini's will and post mortem inventory, Franco Borsi noted that no books were listed there.' He concluded that Bernini was a 'uomo senza lettere', his learned conceptions the result of researches made by others. As Borsi put it: 'gli altri leggessero per lui'. Bernini's build- ings and sculptures belie these charges but, in the absence of direct evidence, scholars have had trouble assessing the extent and nature of his intellectual pursuits.

An inventory of books made after the death of Gianlorenzo's younger brother Luigi has recently come to light in the Roman State Archives (see the Appendix below).2 It lists 169 titles and, I believe, constitutes a portion of a library that once belonged to Gianlorenzo. Luigi Bernini was born fourteen years after his brother and died only a year after him, in 1681.' Baldinucci describes him as 'a good sculptor, a better architect and an excellent mathe- matician ... experienced in civil architecture ... mechanics, and speculations concerning the force and measure of water',4 adding that in each of these areas he was so accomplished that his brother, the cavaliere, always turned to him for help in the most difficult oper- ations. Luigi was responsible for piecing together the fragments of the obelisk and ensuring their stability atop the arc of travertine Bernini designed for the fountain in the Piazza Navona. He designed theatrical sets for his brother and acted in his plays; he devised a moveable organ for St Peter's and numerous machines for lifting weights; he flanked his brother as Soprastante or second in command at the site of St Peter's. As Bernini's son and bio- grapher Domenico states, Luigi worked side by side with Gian- lorenzo 'in tutte le opere di Architettura ... come del suo Achille'.5

When Gianlorenzo died in 1680, he left Luigi the famous triple portrait of Charles I by Van Dyck, with the specific injunction that Luigi care for his sons.6 At the time of Luigi's own death in December the following year he was living in Gianlorenzo's house in the via delle Mercede. Luigi left the portrait and all his other possessions to his nephews.'

Although no inventory is known for Gianlorenzo's personal library and no books are among the formal items listed in his will, it seems likely, given that the two brothers lived together, that at least a portion of the books listed in 1681 had been held in common. It should be noted, however, that the inventory lacks volumes that we know, from other sources, should be there. We learn from Chantelou, for example, that Bernini had a copy of Roland Freart de Chambray's Paralle, and that it was his practice to read a chap- ter from Thomas i Kempis's Imitation of Christ to his family each evening.8 These books are not listed in the inventory. One should therefore tentatively conclude that Luigi's inventory provides a part of the whole Bernini library and that in time similar documents may appear to round out the picture.

In scale, the library is neither small nor particularly large.

Maderno's inventory lists twenty-four books, Borromini's mentions about 459.9 The titles assembled here suggest a reader with a pref- erence for vernacular Italian. There are few Latin editions (most of them illustrated treatises), no foreign language dictionaries and, with the exception of a French edition of the prophecies of Nos- tradamus, all the foreign books are translations.'0 It is a library rich in mathematics, mechanics, architecture, and history, one whose titles display an awareness of the astronomical debates of the time, one which is exceptionally strong in literature, includes surpris- ingly little religion and almost no philosophy. The books listed here reflect the interests of an architect, engineer and sculptor; a painter, letterato and courtier. While Luigi shared some of these interests with his brother, the intellectual profile suggested by these books is more consistent with Gianlorenzo.

Several volumes in the library can be directly related to works produced by the cavaliere. Lelio Guidiccioni's Racconto della Trasport- atione del Corpo di Paolo V, for example, published in 1623, recounts the funeral ceremonies for the Borghese pope. The young Bernini had made thirty-six virtues for Paul's catafalque: Guidiccioni's publication preserves these ephemeral statues in engravings. Gia- como Manilli's guide to the Villa Borghese, published in 1650, describes the suburban residence of Bernini's early patron Scipione Borghese, for whom he made the statues of David and Apollo and Daphne, among many other works.

That the library served the needs of a cavaliere is suggested by the volumes on the art of comportment and the proper behaviour of a courtier. In addition to copies of Castiglione and Della Casa, we find Possevino's Dialogo dell'honore, published in 1566, which explains the grades of nobility and of noble behaviour, Fausto da Longiano's II Gentilhuomo, and Lorenzo Ducci's Arte Aulica which, as the subtitle states, explains the manner in which the courtier can gain and retain the favour of his prince.

At the library in the via delle Mercede, philosophy was in short supply, mediated through translation and commentary. Volumes include Ludovico Dolce's Somma and Panfilio Persico's Breve dichiaratione, both concerning the philosophy of Aristotle, Ficino's commentary on Plato's Symposium, and the hugely popular though spurious Segreto dei segreti, a philosophical compendium sometimes attributed to Aristotle, sometimes to Albertus Magnus. Readers here would find many volumes of ancient history, including Livy, Flavius Josephus, Quintus Curtius, and Julius Caesar. The more recent history of Italy is represented by the work of Francesco Guicciardini, and church history includes Baronius's Annali and Platina's /ite of the popes. Religious texts are limited to three editions of the Bible and a life of the Blessed Francesco Borgia.

The library is rich in encyclopaedic accounts of world history and human behaviour: these books are typical products of the diffusion of print, literary equivalents of cabinets of curiosity. Titles range from Gaspare Bugati's Historia universale to Doglione's Compendio historico and Giovanni Aubano's Costumi recording the customs, laws, and behaviour of people from Ethiopia to India. Tomaso Garzoni's Piazza universale defines scores of different pro- fessions by quoting from ancient and modern authors. Significant for Bernini and his brother would have been Garzoni's description of the architect, towards the end of which he remarks on the close

ties of geometry and mechanics which, he observes, are bound together like a gordian knot. Among the modern authors whose writings on the subject Garzoni recommends, the Bernini library contains Commandino, Guidobaldo del Monte, Tartaglia, and Agricola. Also included are Ramelio, Branca and Galileo, the latter represented by three works, one a manuscript copy of his Mecchaniche which, according to the historian of science Antonio Favaro, was written c.1600." Twelve copies of the manuscript survive, it being Galileo's practice to circulate manuscript copies of his works among students and friends. The presence of such a manuscript in the Bernini library may suggest a link with Galileo and the world of the Accademia dei Lincei.

Books on the movement of water, among them Michelini, Bar- ratteri, and Castello, would have been essential reference works for Gianlorenzo in his capacity as Architect to the Acqua Vergine, a post he held from 1629, and for Luigi as Architect of the Waters under Alexander VII. Interest in practical mechanics, manifest in these volumes, expands in other directions consistent with Bernini's biography. Guidobaldo del Monte's student was Nicola Sabbatini, who in 1638 wrote Pratica di Fabricar Scene, e machine ne' Teatri. This volume, which stood on the shelf between the architectural treatises of Palladio and Serlio, could have provided Bernini with inspiration for the notorious and surprising effects of his plays. Sabbatini explained how to make a figure appear to be burning on the stage, how to make mountains materialise or clouds go up and down, how to turn a person to stone.

The considerable dedication of both brothers to the study of architecture can be gleaned not only from the books on geometry and mechanics, but from the multiple copies of architectural treatises the library contained. In addition to the volumes of Palladio and Serlio already mentioned, the inventory lists three copies of Vitruvius, along with Vignola and Labacco. On the related subject of fortifications, one finds the standard work by Lorini.

Technical treatises appropriate to the sculptor include Diirer's Della simmetria dei corpi humani, Frangois Perrier's visual index of ancient statuary, and Agricola's advice on founding. The painter could consult Lomazzo and pursue the study of perspective and optics through Accolti, Sirigatti, and Vignola. Bernini's interest in telescoping effects, evident in his late architecture, would have found inspiration here. In fact, we know that he pursued further reading on the subject in the celebrated library of the Minims at the Trinita dei Monti.'2

A copy of Manzini's L'Occhiale all'occhio, published in 1660, suggests an interest in astronomy. Dedicated to St Lucy, Manzini's book is a practical discussion of the function of the human eye, the behaviour of light and shadow, and the grinding and polishing of lenses. Manzini became interested in the subject through the Neapolitan Francesco Fontana, whom he hails in the preface as a 'novello linc[e]o' with nothing to envy in Galileo. Manzini experi- mented with lenses in the garden of the Duke of Modena and with Padre Cavalieri in Bologna.

Although Bernini is not normally considered in the context of scientific virtuosi, the presence of Manzini's book, along with two volumes of the Augustinian Bonaventura Cavalieri, Galileo's manuscript on mechanics, and a copy of his explosive Dialogo... sopra i due massimi sistemi, indicates more than a casual interest in the debate concerning the Copernican and Tychonic systems. These books support Irving Lavin's speculation that, with his design made in 1652 for the frontispiece of Nicola Zucchi's Optica Philosophica, Bernini engaged directly with the Galilean controversy.'3

The most prominent characteristic of the library is its literary

richness. Of the 169 titles mentioned, sixty-eight fall into the cate- gory of what we would call literature - poetry, drama, romance, adventure. While the painter Luigi Scaramuccia, writing in 1674, prescribes that the learned artist read 'buone lettere', both the number and range of titles in the Bernini library make it exceptional. In addition to Ovid, Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Ariosto and Boiardo, Bernini read Sansovino, Aretino, Sanazzaro, Tassoni and Pulci, and as Howard Hibbard suspected, many volumes of the poetry of Giambattista Marino.'4 He could cultivate his theatrical interests with the tragedies of Decio and Manzini, and the satires of Boccalini.

When one compares the Bernini library with those of other seventeenth-century Roman artists and architects, it is the wealth of narrative and literary work that makes it stand out. Whereas the libraries of Maderno, Maruscelli, Sacchi, and Durante Alberti abound in technical writings, treatises, iconographical dictionaries, and lives of saints, the Bernini library is a hybrid of scientific and technical writings and belles lettres, one that has more in common with the country library of his patron Agostino Chigi."5 Though different in scale, the collection is filled with books that provide diversion and entertainment. In keeping with his r81e as a courtier, Bernini read what his patrons read.

The impressive scientific, historical, and literary variety of the Bernini library demonstrates that the cavaliere was indeed an 'uomo letterato'. But other historical evidence must be added to the inventory to reconstruct Bernini's activity as reader. There are clues among the drawings, which show Bernini using his copy of Serlio as a guide to his study of the Pantheon,'6 or among the diary entries of Chantelou in which Bernini praises Peruzzi's plan for St Peter's printed in Serlio's treatise.'" Tod Marder has noted echoes of Serlio's words in remarks Bernini made in France and notes that Bernini's letters mention trips to the large private libraries of Rome.'8Brendan Dooley has found evidence that the young Berni- ni, along with other members of his family, borrowed books in the 1620s from a library at S. Prassede, failing to return a copy of Cesare Ripa's Iconologia.1'

Chantelou mentioned books in his diary of Bernini's visit to France, indicating which he favoured, which he owned, and what he thought of their high cost. According to Chantelou, Bernini praised Thomas a Kempis's Imitation of Christ, adding that it was the preferred reading of St Ignatius Loyola, and-that 'everyone found in it what he needed'. Bernini also recommended An Introduction to a Devout Life by St Francis de Sales as Alexander VII's favourite book.20 We know that he was presented with a copy of Freart's Parallle by its author and, remarkably enough, we are told exactly how this transpired.21 On 28th July 1665, Chantelou recorded an encounter between his brother, Roland Freart de Chambray, and Bernini. 'That evening my brother came for the first time. The Cavaliere gave him a warm welcome and said laughingly that he would like to acquire his books at the same prices that his son and signor Matthia had; they had received them as a present a few days before when they had been at my house.' Several weeks later his French hosts responded. On the evening of 10th August, Chantelou writes, 'I went to see the Cavaliere in the evening accompanied by my brother, who presented him with a copy of his Paralldle de l'architecture. He refused to accept it, saying that it was enough if there was a copy in his house, my brother having given one to his son and Mattia already. But when he was told that my brother had hoped to be allowed to do him this honour, he accepted it and said he was greatly obliged to us.'

copies must have been available in the house on via delle Mercede. Books are not listed in the will left by Bernini, whereas items such as real estate, luoghi di monti, furniture, silver and art are described in copious detail and constitute the inalienable household goods inherited by the first-born son. Real property is distinguished from intellectual property. Books, it would seem, could reside under the care of one Bernini or another, with the understanding that they remain within the walls of Bernini's house.

In the inventogy that follows, the notary's wording is in bold and the books are identfied in roman type. The

notary gives no indication of the date orformat of the edition in question, and the task of

identifying which editions Bernini owned remains elusive. Ihavefollowed certain guidelines in select- ing the volumes I list. In all cases I have sought the edition in which the title most closely approxi- mates that given by the notary. Unless otherwise noted, when several editions are available for the years of Bernini's life, I have chosen the one published in the years immediately following his birth. If there is a choice between an edition in theyearsjust prior to his birth and those later in the centugy, I have selected the earlier date. After a long period of critical disfavour, the re-evaluation of the Carracci and their followers began half a century ago with an outpouring of publications devoted to Bolognese painting and an important series of exhibitions held in Bologna and else- where. Francesco Albani (1578-1660), however, remained one of the few major artists who had not yet benefited from a thorough study. The volume under review, extensively reworked from a doctoral thesis of 1983, is the first monograph devoted to the artist. Indeed, with the exception of Eric van Schaack's dissertation of 1969 - unfortu- nately never published as a book - major studies of Albani have been confined to articles such as that by Antonio Boschetto (1948), and it has been difficult to reach an

overall assessment of his position in the history of Italian seventeenth-century painting. The situation has now been remedied thanks to this excellent book which includes a catalogue raisonn6, reproduces most of Albani's known painted works, and discusses the whole of his career on a firm scholarly foundation.

Covering over six decades, Albani's working life is well documented thanks to the biographies written during his lifetime by Mancini (c. 1621), Scannelli (1657), San- drart (1675), Passeri (c.1678) and above all Malvasia (1678) to which can be added the one announced by Bellori which was never published. In addition, there is a considerable amount of documentary evidence - in terms of letters, contracts and listings in inventories - which is very completely assembled here. This makes it possible to reconstruct a satisfactory chronology despite the difficulties presented by the abundance of replicas or copies of paintings made for private collectors, often produced in Albani's

studio at dates long after the originals. Training from 1590 with Denys Calvaert

in Bologna, Albani worked there alongside Guido Reni and Domenichino producing small paintings on copper sold under the master's name, before moving on, like them, to join the Carracci academy. While Anni- bale and Agostino prepared themselves for Rome, Albani learnt with them the tech- niques of fresco and the conventions of religious painting. It was in these two fields that he enjoyed his earliest successes, first in Bologna and then in Rome, where he arrived with Reni in 1601. Although he took no part in the Galleria Farnese, he was Annibale's principal assistant in the Herrera Chapel and on the Aldobrandini lunettes, before receiving prestigious fresco commis- sions in the Mattei, Verospi and Giustiniani palaces, and in the church of S. Maria della Pace between 1606 and 1614. With their classical compositions, idealised figures and refined and learned iconography, these monumental creations owe much to the
