Since our establishment in 1992 HKR Architects has grown to become a leading international architecture and design practice delivering exceptional design, value engineering and lead design consultancy to our clients.

We view the practice of architecture and design as a collaborative process, working closely with our clients to deliver projects with better creative design and more commercial success.

Our international network allows us to work on a global scale with our two main design hubs being in London and Dubai, with project offices in St. Petersburg, Astana, Abu Dhabi and Dublin. This provides us with vast international experience and with this, has developed our local knowledge, so we can specialise wherever a project is based.

Residential architecture is an all encompassing term and covers a large and diverse typology of residential building types, from single family houses to large urban blocks and residential towers.

Design is strongly connected to business success. Buildings of the future will be entirely different to the places where we work today. These innovative workplaces will have a profound effect on organisational culture and individual performance.

To produce an elegant building. This must be the starting point for any project. An office building must be both commercially and architecturally robust; ambitious and deliverable in equal measure. Clarity of form, space and a rejection of architectural gesture will lead to a sustainable proposal. We believe in the refinement of a building’s essential components through technical understanding.

To produce an efficient building. A commercial building must maximise its nett to gross ratio. We aim to maximise the floor area within the site and plan the space with a nett to gross ratio in excess of 80%. Notional space planning studies are always undertaken to provide an efficient grid layout and core placement – through understanding the notion of usable and unusable space within a floorplate.

The student should be at the heart of educational building design. We create an environment which nurtures the social and intellectual needs of a new generation.

We like to talk to people about how they work and learn, and how new buildings can change things for the better. The excellent design of schools requires the input of a wide range of experts. At HKR we believe these experts include Year 7 pupils as well as construction managers. We know how to make discussions enjoyable and informative and use the results to make excellent designs.

Our team has developed different models of the campus secondary school design. One such model has many benefits for children’s health, the management of the school as a whole and building efficiency. We have tested this model by viewing through a child’s day, measuring the distance travelled between lessons and comparing it with other site layouts. The technique has been used by Partnerships for Schools as an example of best practice.

Shopping streets and centres define the visual and social character of our towns and cities. Today retail-led regeneration provides stimulating, entertaining, and engaging places to be.

Many town centres need more retail capacity but appear to have no space for expansion, which leads to the justification for uncontrolled out-of-town alternatives.

At HKR our retail team have a particular talent for identifying sites that are often overlooked by others.

HKR has extensive experience in retail design – we can identify ways to expand the prime shopping area with less valuable back-land and integrate the old with the new seamlessly. With our combined design-led and business focus, we know how to achieve successful commercial values whilst maintaining a strong urban design perspective.
