   Started in 1995, in Bihar , Nidan is an initiative to help and improve the living of informal sector workers It facilitates education, health and livelihood of the poor men and women or protection of children involved in the informal sector. Presently, it is working in six states in India.

Life & Career

• Born on May 8, 1953 in Kinnigoli in Karnataka

• Decided to become a heart surgeon when he heard about a South African surgeon who had just performed the world’s first heart transplant

• He completed his graduate degree in medicine and post-graduate work in General Surgery from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore

• During his initial years while working at B.M. Birla Hospital in Kolkata he operated on Mother Teresa

• He later served as her personal physician and was greatly influenced by her

Narayana Hrudalaya

• In 2001 Dr. Shetty founded Narayana Hrudalaya Hospital a multi specialty hospital in Bangalore

• He started it because he could not find any employers who could understand him

• He believed cost of healthcare can be reduced by 50% by adopting the idea of economies of scale

• The heart hospital is one of the largest in the world with 1000 beds performing over 30 heart surgeries in a day

• Narayana Hrudayalaya, a pioneer in low-cost cardiac care, is building a chain of hospitals that will carry out heart surgeries at the cheapest rates in the world
