The person playing the protagonist in our thriller opening (Sam Conway) fits the criteria for the character characteristics we had previously researched and determined. A young caucasian male around the age of 21, dark brown/ black hair, Dark stubble/ beard, slim muscular build, combed back on trend hairstyle. Possibly challenging a stereotype of young white men being the heroic figures in movies. Does not speak throughout the opening Maintains air of mystery The protagonist in Chronicle wears a black shirt, maroon tie and grey overcoat, which is smart. Our protagonist puts on a suit, later on in our opening, this could perhaps conform to the stereotype that a lot of smart and sophisticated people are criminals. Both characters are late teens, early twenties which could perhaps infer that this is an age to be successful The fact that both characters are committing bad acts could also infer that this is an age of criminality, perhaps then challenging this stereotype of being good and successful. The social group represented is young males and females, between the ages of 17- 28 of any class or race. The protagonist being a male, would may interest the men, while the idea of him being good looking may interest the females. Although this movie may appeal to older people, our research tells us that this would appeal to people of this age range, because these are the people with the most time and money to watch movies and enjoy them. Males are not represented in a dominant way in our opening as the protagonist is presented as a young man going out for the night, with nothing else being revealed. Had the opening not been left on a cliff hanger, the plot may have been revealed and the male protagonist may have been presented as dominant, but our choice idea to leave people guessing is more thrilling and more effective in my opinion. As the opening does not reveal the protagonist in a ‘bad light’, it may be more appealing to both genders as females wont be put off by a movie which could oppress women in a sense.
