Class Questions - 1

Does Acts 8:39 mean that the

Holy Spirit "transported" Philip?

Like Star Trek style?

Class Questions - 2

Should there be an expectation

when we pray for healing for others

that it should be immediate?

Class Questions - 3

In Acts 16: 16-18, why did

the spirit in the girl proclaim

God in Paul and Silas?

Class Questions - 4

Do we worship the Holy Spirit?

Class Questions - 5

Acts 12 says that the believers

were praying for Peter.

Do I need more people praying for me?

Why wouldn't my prayers be enough?

Called to be…

…a person of the Spirit!

For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into

one Spirit. (1 Cor. 12:13)

People of the Spirit

Or… not.

The Bible contrasts spiritual people

with people of the soul

or people of the flesh.

Important terms in Paul

“Natural” or “sensual” –

Driven by the reasonings of the soul

“Carnal” or “fleshly” –

Led by the desires of the flesh

The wind of God

pneuma =

spirit, breath, or wind

pneumatikos =

the spiritual man

The “natural” man: 1 Cor. 2:14

“…the natural man does not receive the

things of the Spirit of God.”

psuche = soul

psuchikos = soulish

What is a psychic?

The carnal man

“…the organ employed in the

apprehension of spiritual truth

characterizes the man.”

Who’s in the driver’s seat?

The Spirit, soulish mind, or the flesh?

1 Cor. 2:9-16

… “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,

neither have there entered into the

heart of man, the things which God has

prepared for those who love him.” But

God has revealed them to us by his

Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things,

yes, the deep things of God.

1 Cor. 2:9-16

For what man knows the things of a

man, except the spirit of man

which is in him?

Even so the things of God no

man knows, but the Spirit of God.

1 Cor. 2:9-16

Now we have received, not the spirit

of the world, but the Spirit which is

from God, so that we might know

the things that are freely given to us

by God –

which things we also speak

1 Cor. 2:9-16

not in the words which man's wisdom

teaches, but which the Holy Spirit

teaches, comparing spiritual things

with spiritual. But the natural man

does not receive the things

of the Spirit of God, for they are

foolishness unto him;

1 Cor. 2:9-16

neither can he know them, because

they are spiritually discerned. But he

that is spiritual discerns all things, yet

he himself is discerned by no man. For

“who has known the mind of the Lord,

that he may instruct Him?” But we

have the mind of Christ.

How to become spiritual

1. Realize that God’s work is done through God’s power

Zech. 4:6, John 15:5

through God’s power

2. Seek God for fresh

fillings of power

4. Engage in Kingdom living by doing

the words of Jesus regardless of your

experience or customs.

How to become spiritual

5. Do not judge situations with your natural senses

“…he shall not judge with the sight of

his eyes, nor decide with

the hearing of his ears…”

(Isa. 11:3)

How to become spiritual

6. Let your actions be regulated

by love

How to become spiritual

7. Renew your mind to the

realities and possibilities

of Kingdom living, and see

yourself as an ambassador and

agent of the Kingdom

in every circumstance.

His passions & emotions

What we can attract or lose

is His blessing

and the sense of

His engagement with us.

Grieving the Spirit

Let no corrupt communication proceed

out of your mouth, but that which is

good to the use of edifying, that it may

minister grace unto the hearers.

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God,

whereby ye are sealed

unto the day of redemption.

Grieving the Spirit

Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger,

and clamor, and evil speaking, be put

away from you, with all malice:

and be ye kind one to another,

tenderhearted, forgiving one another,

even as God for Christ's sake hath

forgiven you. (Eph. 4:29-32)

Uncleanness & Immorality

For God has not called us to

uncleanness, but to holiness.

He therefore who despises,

despises not man, but God,

who hath also given unto us

his Holy Spirit.

(1 Thess. 4:7-8)

A vengeful & vindictive heart

But he turned, and rebuked them,

and said,

You know not what manner

of spirit you are of.

(Luke 9:55)

Resisting & Rebelling

But they rebelled, and vexed

his Holy Spirit: therefore he was

turned to be their enemy,

and he fought against them.

(Isaiah 63:10)

How long will He strive?

And the LORD said,

“My spirit shall not always strive

with man, for that he also is flesh;

yet his days shall be a hundred

and twenty years.”

(Gen. 6:3)

Advancing ourselves

If we live in the Spirit,

let us also walk in the Spirit.

Let us not be desirous of vain glory,

provoking one another,

envying one another.

(Gal 5:25-26)

Excessive Control

Quench not the Spirit.

Despise not prophesyings.

(1 Thess. 5:19-20)

Attracting His Presence

By walking in the fear of the Lord:

And the spirit of the LORD shall rest

upon him, the spirit of wisdom and

understanding, the spirit of counsel and

might, the spirit of knowledge and of

the fear of the LORD… (Isa. 11:2)

Attracting His Presence

Through humility:

…to this man will I look, even to him

that is poor and of a contrite spirit,

and trembleth at my word.

(Isa. 66:2)

Cultivate His Presence:2 Cor. 6:3-10

Giving no offence in anything, that the

ministry be not blamed: but in all things

approving ourselves as the ministers

of God, in much patience, in afflictions,

in necessities, in distresses, in stripes,

in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors,

in watchings, in fastings; by pureness,

Cultivate His Presence:2 Cor. 6:3-10

by knowledge, by longsuffering, by

kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love

unfeigned, by the word of truth, by the

power of God, by the armor of

righteousness on the right hand

and on the left, by honor and dishonor,

by evil report and good report:

Cultivate His Presence:2 Cor. 6:3-10

as deceivers, and yet true; as

unknown, and yet well known; as

dying, and, behold, we live; as

chastened, and not killed; as sorrowful,

yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet

making many rich; as having nothing,

and yet possessing all things.
