Why is it important to know the

SOCIAL NEEDS of a LEARNER?

The opportunity for social interactions with others are very important for the development of all learners.

Social factor profoundly affect student engagement and motivation as well as student perceptions of relevancy of task.

Social are communities, care can be taken to ensure that each and every student has a purposeful connection with at least one adult in the environment.

Having a social connection supports engagements. Engagements as a prerequisite for learning seems obvious and straightforward. Engagement is typically defined in three ways.

1. Behavioral Motivation2. Emotional Engagement3. Cognitive Engagement

Research studies indicate that student’s perception of relatedness to teachers, parents and peers uniquely contributes to emotional and behavioral engagement.

Researchers generally agree that learning is inherently social- it happens in the context of interactions and relationships with teachers, peers, family, experts, & others.

What are the benefits/ advantages when they

meet the SOCIAL NEEDS of a LEARNER?

1. Social interactions provide tremendous opportunities for students to deepen learning.

2. They become more and more interested in interacting with other people.

3. Students learn appropriate social behaviors, such as sharing, cooperating and respecting the property of others.

4. They learn communication, cognitive and motor skills.

5. Students who learn appropriate social skill often have a higher self-esteem and show a greater willingness to interact with their environment as they grow.
