Why does Critical

Thinkingfall under 21st

Century Learning?

Let's reflect on ourselves as critical thinkers

Critical Thinking defined . . .

"Critical thinking is that mode of thinking -- about any subject, content, or problem -- in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully analyzing, assessing, and reconstructing it. Critical thinking is self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking." Paul and Elder

Critical Thinking has three dimensions/ components . . .

AnalyticEvaluativeCreative

As critical thinkers, we analyze thinking in order to evaluate it. We evaluate it in order to improve it. (Paul and Elder)

Let's Write Some Questions ---Think about a unit you will be teaching in the next few weeks.Using the words on the yellow and blue cubes, write 4 or 5 questions you might ask a student using the content of that unit.Depending on your grade level, you may use the exact words or a "grade level appropriate" version.

Choose one color of "Post-Its" to write your questions.

Examples of Questions

Hypothesize why some smells are stronger than others.Decide which community helper you could go to if you lost your pet.Verify 8 X 8 = 64Judge the impact of the First Amendment on the 1960's.Justify Hermione's inclusion in Hogwart's

Directions . . .

After writing your questions, determine which "Standard of Thought" is most applicable. (large poster) Place your Post-Its next to the standard you've identified.

Debates . . . Problem Solving Activities Essays . . . Speeches . . . Editorials

Cartoons . . . PowerPoint Presentations

What if . . . ?

What if we ran out of natural gas? What if the California Gold Rush never happened? What if Mozart had lived to a ripe old age? What if Rosa Parks had not sat down on the bus? What if we had no common number system?
