Changing Education Paradigms – Sir Ken Robinsonhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDZFcDGpL4U

“[They] are living in the most intensely stimulating period in the history of the earth… …beseiged with information and calls for attention from every platform: computers, iPhones, advertising hoardings, 100’s of TV channels… and we penalise students for getting distracted! From what? Boring stuff. At school for the most part. It may not be a coincidence totally that ADHD has risen in parallel with standardised testing”.

SIR KEN ROBINSON

Our genes have co-evolved with our inventions… As fast as we remake our tools, we remake ourselves. We are co-evolving with our technology, and so we have become deeply dependent on it. If all technology – every last knife and spear – were to be removed from this planet, our species would not last more than a few months. We are now symbiotic with technology. Kevin Kelly

A few -isms

Instructivism Constructivism Connectivism

An Instructivistic approach

• Teacher is the authority• Teacher is the knowledge giver• Students are passive• Students learn what the teacher tells them to

Constructivism

• Response to the Rise of web 2.0• Students are participants• Students are empowered to seek knowledge

& understanding for themselves in the context of their own unique, individual experiences

• Teachers become facilitators – guiding & coaching participants to inquire, explore, discover & generate new learning

Connectivism

• What we know is less important than our capacity to continue to learn more.

• Learning happens in informal, networked, technology-enabled areas

• Nurturing and maintaining connections is needed to facilitate learning.

Connectivism

• Learning happens in many different ways. Courses, email, communities, conversations, web search, email lists, reading blogs, etc.

• Explicitly addresses how best to learn in today’s world of connectedness & access to ever-changing & expanding knowledge.

As we ask people to do more complicated, creative and sophisticated tasks, a management-model based on compliance is no use. What you want is engagement and a self-directed, or autonomous workforce is much better at this. DAN PINK

We need a more sustainable engagement economy – an economy that works by motivating and rewarding participants with intrinsic rewards… Positive emotions are the ultimate reward for participation.JANE MCGONIGAL
