Nothing major to report. Thanks to
our litter pickers and possibly parishioners
who are using litterbins more frequently, the
village is looking well kept. Many will have
noticed the feverish activity in the new
allotment site. All the plots are taken and
there is still a waiting list. The Parish
Council has just signed the lease with the
National Trust, so they are now legally ours.
Good Luck to the Pitstone Allotment
Association and all its endeavours.
The Speed Limit Review through the
village is under careful consideration at the
moment. No doubt you will have noticed the
large yellow signs in the village asking for
your comments about speed restrictions. I
hope that you are making your views felt and
hopefully the outcome will be very
beneficial for Marsworth Road (Lower
Icknield Way), Vicarage Road and
Cheddington Road.
The Annual Assembly proved
successful with a visual display on several
aspects of the village. One of the topics
addressed was the newly proposed village
plan, which is about what YOU think the
village requires for the future (not about
building plans). This is about Pitstone and
amenities about which you can have a great
say. Articles will follow shortly in this
magazine and a new committee will be
formed to action the requirements of the
villagers.
Did you know that it is possible that
HS2 could run down Pitstone side of the
main railway line, desecrating already
established properties and recreational areas
from Folly Farm to Seabrook and this
undoubtedly would have a major impact on
our environment and lives, so close to the
village centre? We need to be vigilant.
Bob Saintey, Chairman
Parish Council News
All Bucks Councils decision to
promote High Speed Rail (HS2) next to the
West Coast Line reversed on April 14th
A report in "The Bucks Herald" on
Wed 31st March, page 6 columns 2 and 3),
stated that: "Bucks County Council,
supported by all of Bucks district councils, is
advocating a route which follows the west
coast mainline and includes an intermediate
station at Milton Keynes";
Bucks County Council published and
began to distribute a full colour A3 leaflet
opposing the officially proposed route,
stating instead its preference for the
alternative West Coast Main Line corridor
from King's Langley to just south of Milton
Keynes. AVDC printed 60,000 similar
leaflets also stating that Bucks Councils had
written to Lord Adonis in December
promoting a West Coast Main Line
alternative.
On April 14th at a special meeting
Aylesbury Vale District Council agreed
unequivocally to withdraw these leaflets
after sustained representation by Corry
Cashman, (Cheddington) Peter Cooper
(Wingrave) and myself. We were also
informed that the County Council had also
agreed to withdraw its leaflet.
However there is still a long way to
go on HS2 and a lot more detail needed on
the principle as well as the route proposals,
and their environmental impact. It does not
(Continued on page 5)
Avril’s Column
Page 4 Pitstone Parish Post Spring 2010
Spring 2010 Pitstone Parish Post Page 5
mean that when the consultation process
begins in the autumn the County and
Districts won't start looking at the west coast
main line alternative again, although we
shall be doing our best to get the councils to
confine their responses to the official route.
When HS1 was proposed through
Kent five routes were consulted on, resulting
in years of unnecessary blight on house
prices along the routes not chosen. Lessons
were learned from HS1 and so only one
route for HS2 was published for
consultation. By stating an alternative
preference for a route through our villages,
the County and District Councils would have
undone this intention at a stroke, and spread
unnecessary and unwanted blight to our
villages had not the leaflets been withdrawn.
Buckingham Constituency Parliamentary
Election
I have had so much correspondence
on this I thought I should add a note here.
As you all know our MP for the
Buckingham Constituency John Bercow, has
been elected by MPs as Speaker of the
House of Commons. As such he has had to
give up any party political affiliation. There
is a convention in The House of Commons,
not observed entirely in the past, that the
major political parties do not stand against
the speaker in a general election, even
though when he or she is returned to
parliament he or she must stand again for re-
election to the office of Speaker. I know this
has caused much turmoil in the local Lib
Dems and Conservatives, who would very
much have liked to have fielded a candidate
if only in the interests of choice and equal
democratic rights for the residents of
Buckingham Constituency. However the
party head offices have made it quite clear
that the convention must be observed. The
prospective candidates who have already
inundated us with mailings are not bound by
their parties in this way.
I would like to suggest that anyone
wanting to vote for a party but unable to do
so because there isn't a candidate, and feels
strongly about this, considers expressing
their support by becoming a member of that
party locally instead.

The Beacon Community Choir treated
a crowded St Mary’s Church, Ivinghoe and
Pitstone to a feast of ‘world music’ on
Sunday February 28. Their concert entitled
‘Songs of Sanctuary’ included seven
uplifting songs from Karl Jenkins’ set of the
same name, and the choir, led by Judith
Sheridan, also performed an exciting and
varied programme of folk songs from South
America and songs from Africa.
My personal favourite was the
exuberant, toe-tapping African number,
‘Freedom is Coming’ (Hamba Vangeli), on
which the superb accompanists - Dave Mann
on bass guitar, Ben Andrew on keyboard and
Tim Mann on drums - were supported by
extremely enthusiastic volunteers from the
audience armed with African drums. But
there was truly something for everyone here,
including a lullaby and a funeral song.
There were also a number of solos
and duets within the programme, courtesy of
Amanda Thorogood, Mary Ann Monaghan,
Sarah Thorogood, Janice Robinson and
Charles Thorogood. All of them beautifully
performed and well received.
The evening ended with a fine
selection of Jenkins pieces, and there were
refreshments afterwards.
Judith Sheridan has taken a group of
singers from local villages and welded them
into an entertaining unit
that is obviously
capable of performing a
wide repertoire.

At our meeting on the 3rd February, the
Ivinghoe & Pitstone branch of the Royal British
Legion said goodbye to Clare and Ian,
Landlords of The Bell in Pitstone who pull their
last pint on the 14th February after 6 years.
During their time at The Bell, they have both
made the committee welcome on the first
Wednesday of each month, allowing us to take
over a corner of the bar for our meetings and
providing refreshments at our AGM. Clare and
Ian were thanked for their hospitality by the
chairman, Owen Wynne and presented with a
rose bush and some placemats which were aptly
printed with a pattern of poppies. Clare and Ian
were also thanked for their support and
fundraising efforts on behalf of the Royal
British Legion which over the years has been
substantial and after our presentation to them,
Clare then presented the Legion with a cheque
for £70 – the result of their final fundraising
undertaking. Thank you both and we wish you
and your family every happiness and good luck in your new life.
Ivinghoe & Pistone RBL
Goodbye to Ian and Clare
I look back at dog walks accompanied
by a medium sized dog and a 'bag for life' of
similar proportions stocked with an old
newspaper, a variety of plastic bags a small
trowel and fork, and a pair of rubber gloves. I
was advised that to scoop up dog mess I only
needed to put my hand inside a single plastic
bag like a mitten and after picking up the
faeces, turn the plastic bag over the 'mess' by
pulling it inside out from the wrist and sealing
the neck of the bag with a knot to securely
contain the contents which could then be placed
in the nearest dog bin put in place by the Parish
Council, who pay for it to be collected and
disposed of safely. I preferred my way.
Health Factors: Children are especially
susceptible to diseases spread by parasites
present in faeces because a dog has not been
'wormed'. For example, in this country 2-3% of
people are thought to be infected with
roundworm at some time in their life. Most will
remain unaware as infectison is often symptom
less or causes nothing worse than a stomach
ache. However 12 people annually suffer eye
damage, when the eggs of the roundworm develop into larvae and circulate to the back of
the eye, this is what happened to a twelve year
old girl in Hemel Hempstead.
Responsibility: Cleaning up after your
dog will cause public opinion of dogs and dog
ownership to be much more positive. By
stooping and scooping, pavements, parks and
green spaces are much cleaner and a better
environment for everyone to enjoy. The state of
a dog's faeces can be an alert to health problems
that may need the intervention of a vet.
Effects on other pets: Parasites and
some other viruses are transmitted from pet to
pet through fecial matter. If everyone cleans up
after their pets the spread of these organisms
will be reduced.
Getting the job done, is a matter of
common sense involving high and low-tech
options from specially designed tools that help
you grab the pile without getting your hands too
close to the mess, down to the plastic bag
option. For those dog owners who leave
someone else to clear up their dog's mess it is
time to live up to your responsibilities. It is a
criminal act to leave it lying where your dog
drops it. If you love your dog get g'love'd up
and prove it.
Internet access is available at Ivinghoe
Library. For more information type 'poop and
scoop' or 'dog fouling and the law - a guide for
the public' into the search engine.

The parish council is always seeking
to ensure that the facilities we provide meet
the needs of local residents. We would love
to hear your views on the three children's
playgrounds within the village, located in
Vicarage Road, Windsor Road and Hever
Close. For a village location, we believe
Pitstone has a great range of formal play
equipment that is envied by many other local
villages whose parents often travel to
Pitstone to utilise our facilities. Do you think
they provide a wide enough range of play
activities for your children? Are there other
facilities that you would like to see? If you
have disabled children, we'd like to know if
their needs are catered for. Please send all

Pirates’ marks 40 musical

anniversary
production of
a l o c a l

society he
helped to
found. And his wife, who played a leading
role in the society’s very first production, will
also be in the chorus when The Vale Gilbert & Sullivan Society (Vale G&S) performs the
definitive G&S operetta, ‘The Pirates of
Penzance’ at the Court Theatre, Tring, at the
beginning of May.
The idea of the society was conceived
by Brian Rose and the late Brian Kirk and the
inaugural meeting was held in Buckland
Village Hall with just seven people present. A
year later, in 1970, Vale G&S mounted its first
major production, ‘The Mikado’. Brian Rose
played the slapstick Lord High Executioner
and his wife Pat played Yum-Yum. Press
reviews described the performance as “an
unqualified success”, although Brian Rose
recalls that there was a near-disaster.
“Less than an hour before the start of
the last night’s performance, Olwyn Stansfield,
who was playing Katisha, lost her voice. After
frantic telephone calls for a stand-in, the musical director, Roland Stevens, appealed to
the audience. Jennifer Cooper of Cheddington
volunteered to sing from under the stage, sight-
reading the music, whilst Olwyn mimed the
part on stage.”
The society’s
home for its first
eight years was the
Victoria Hall, Tring,
before moving to The
Court at Pendley
Manor where most of
its shows have been performed over the
past 32 years. But Vale G&S was never
intended as a purely Tring organisation -hence
the name - and has also performed at other
venues, most recently ‘A Grand Victorian
Music Hall’ at Ivinghoe.
Tickets are now on sale for ‘The Pirates
of Penzance’, on at the Court from Wednesday
May 5 to Saturday 8 - and
Brian and Pat Rose will
both be part of a colourful
chorus. The plot concerns
Frederick, mistakenly
apprenticed to the Pirate
King as a boy. When his apprenticeship is over, he
gives up piracy, falls in
love with the Major
General’s daughter, Mabel, and swears to
exterminate his former comrades. But then a
remarkable paradox forces him to rejoin the
pirates for an attack on his prospective father-
in-law.
Performances are at 8 pm. Tickets,
priced £12, with concessions at £10
Wednesday to Friday only, can be obtained
from Pat Rose on 01296 662745 or Castle
Insurance Group, Dolphin Square, Tring on

Free safety checks to help reduce the
risk of a fire or other emergency in your
home are available from Buckinghamshire
Fire & Rescue Service
Free smoke alarms are fitted where
required, and firefighters will also help you
find out more about other useful local ser-
vices if you are interested.
The checks take about 30 minutes
each, depending on the size of the house, and
are usually carried out by firefighters. The
householder needs to be present to answer a
few questions.
Firefighters will offer fire safety ad-
vice, based on any potential fire risks that
they may have identified during the check,
and answer questions.
They will then fit as many smoke
alarms as they think necessary. Buckingham-
shire Fire & Rescue Service currently fits
British Standard smoke alarms with a sealed
battery that should last 10 years in normal
use.
To book one of these free checks, ring
01296 744477 or email cs@bucksfire.gov.uk
Community safety manager Terry
Ridgley said: “When fires break out, smoke
alarms provide a vital early warning sign. If
the fire happens at night, they are often your
only warning.”
Here are Terry’s top tips to ensure
you and your family stay
safe from fire:
• Fit and maintain a
smoke alarm: You
should have one on each level of your
home and test it weekly. The ideal posi-
tion is on the ceiling, in the middle of a
room, or in the hallway and landing. Test
it weekly.
• Plan your escape route: Make sure you
and your family knows the quickest way
out in the event of fire. Consider an alter-
native route in case your usual one is
blocked.
• In the event of a fire, get out, stay out and call 999: Don’t delay for valuables,
and don’t investigate or try to tackle the
fire. Use a mobile, a neighbour’s phone or
a phone box to call 999. If someone needs
to be rescued wait safely outside for the
firefighters who have the equipment and
training to do it. Never go back in.
• Check on others: When you visit rela-
tives or friends, look out for safety haz-
ards in the home. Offer to help test their
alarm and plan escape routes together.
• Keep internal doors shut: This will slow
down the spread of fire.
Four key safety messages - Fit smoke
alarms; Test them every week; Plan an es-
cape route; Get out, stay out and call 999.

At our AGM in late April we will be
discussing, and possibly deciding, on a
replacement stairlift. We need to find
several thousand pounds and have made
some progress including support from IPC.
We are in contact with three manufacturers
who can provide the type of curved lift we
need. The current lift is fourteen years old
and no spare parts are available in case of
breakdown.
Although the stairlift is only
intermittently used, it is very necessary to
ensure everyone has access to the hall. The
Town Hall Committee receives no direct
financial assistance from our landlords,
Bucks County Council. This hall has been
available to the village for over ninety years
and we want to continue to make it available
for the future use of all villagers, so please
support it by using it.

A very big thank you to all who made
soup, helped, donated raffle prizes or
attended the Lent lunches this year, we were
over whelmed by the response, (two sittings
were held at Ivinghoe) and with generous
donations for second helpings, the two
events made £229,29 more than last year.
There were plenty of wonderful
Raffle Prizes and tasty soups , one was
made by the year 5 students at Brookmead
School with Mrs. Witherden who also
brought four children to help us lay the
tables.
The two events raised a total of
£1,211.29 divided between SAVE THE

Thank you for such a great result and
for making the lunches so enjoyable.

Castlemead: part of the community in
Pitstone and Ivinghoe
At Castlemead, Taylor Wimpey is
doing much more than just building high-
quality homes for people in Pitstone and
Ivinghoe. As is the case with all its
developments across the country, the house
builder is investing in the community too.
As part of its commitment to
enhancing the areas in which it operates,
Taylor Wimpey has been working hard to
build links with the local neighbourhood
since work began on the new development
off Westfield Road, Pitstone.
Taylor Wimpey has also been
working with Brookmead Primary School in
Ivinghoe, which Castlemead’s Health and
Safety Officer Scott Poppleton visited
recently to teach youngsters about the
dangers of playing on or near the building
site, and to deliver a gift of high-visibility
vests to improve children’s safety while out
on school excursions.
The house builder has also recently
hosted photography and drawing
competitions for pupils at the school, with
great prizes, including a high-spec camera,
presented to the winners and provided
sponsorship for Windmill Pre-School’s
Windmill Festival, which it took place in.
Further information on the new homes
is available by visiting the Sales Centre in
Harlech Road, off Westfield Road, Pitstone,
and open seven days a week, from 10am to
5pm Tuesday to Sunday, and from 1.30pm
to 5pm on Mondays. Alternatively, you can

gave so many years of his time to the village.
The award consists of a certificate and £50 and

eligible the winner must have worked in a
voluntary capacity, for the benefit of the
village, or indeed the twin villages of Ivinghoe
and Pitstone.

for example, sport, education, leisure or just
being willing to help where they are needed,
then Laurie Eagling, Clerk to the Parish Council, would be glad to hear from you any
time during the year. Just drop her an email or
a note nominating the person and explaining
why you think they qualify, and the person will
be considered for the award in 2011.
The first recipient of the award, in 2009,
was Elaine Thorogood in recognition of her
services to Girl Guiding. This year the winner
is John Groom. Most of us are familiar with his
tractor trundling up and down Marsworth Road
or cutting the grass on the Recreation Ground
and the new football pitches. His dogs Wally
and Bella are often in attendance, Bella, in
particular making her presence known vocally
if not visibly.
John has been nominated for his
contribution to local football and cricket. He is
passionate about football and recently gave up
managing the Junior Football Club after 10
years. In the cricket club he is Sunday Captain
and helps with the U17 team. His other
important contribution is managing the football
and cricket grounds. This takes up hours of his
time. His wife, Jo, describes him as a
‘Workaholic’.
He has been a football referee for 10
years, and currently officiates in the Spartan
South Midlands League, as well as refereeing
the occasional match for the Junior Football
Club.
John and his sister Karen run Groom’s
Farm in Ivinghoe. John is a qualified butcher
and while Karen looks after the animals, John
can be found, when he’s not maintaining grass and cutting, serving meat to his many
customers. The shop is open all day on Fridays
and also on Saturday mornings.
John and Jo live in Pitstone and have been married for 20 years. They met in the
police force where they both worked. John left
the police when his father, also named John,
became ill with a brain tumour. Sadly he died
very soon afterwards and ‘Young’ John has
worked on the farm since 1988.
In his father’s day Willowdene was a
pig farm, dairy, and livestock haulage base.
It is now solely a livestock smallholding
where animals are reared for ultimate sale in
the Farm Shop.
Anyone who knows John will realise
that he is not very comfortable with publicity.
Jo and his sons are all very proud of him but he
would rather keep a low profile. According to
Jo he “Loves his village and just wants the
recreation ground to look its best. He does not
expect any reward for his efforts.”
John drinks in the Rose and Crown and
has recently started helping with the quizzes on
alternate Tuesday and Wednesday evenings
(see www.roseancrownivinghoe.com). He
plays all kinds of sports including golf, where
he has a handicap of 10. He was very proud in
2008 to have played cricket for the first time in
the same Ivinghoe & Pitstone team as his sons
Ollie and Alex.
As for the future, he wants “Just to stay
healthy and active”. With all that sport and
physical activity, he should be able to achieve that!

money at the
Mardi Gras
Party of the
year. On Saturday June 19 more than 1,000
women - along with 100 lucky men - will set
off at midnight for Iain Rennie Hospice at
Home’s (IRHH) annual Goodnight
Walk. The sponsored walkers will attempt
to raise more than £120,000 to help people
with cancer and life-threatening illness in
Pitstone and others across the Chilterns area
of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. This
year’s Goodnight Walk has a Mardi Gras
theme with a prize for the best dressed
entrant.
Marshals will accompany walkers on
the eight mile circular route around
Amersham and Little Chalfont which begins
at Amersham Polish Club. There will be
refreshment points and portaloos and all
participants will receive a well-earned hot
breakfast at the finish line.
Ruth Barber, Community Fundraising
Manager at Iain Rennie Hospice at Home
said: ‘Last year’s event was a great success:
people of all ages took part and there was a
real camaraderie and a brilliant
atmosphere. We’re hoping this year will be
even better and that we can top last year’s
fundraising total of £120,000. The
Goodnight Walk is a great way to get fit and
raise money: it’s going to be the Mardi Gras
party of the year!’
The Goodnight Walk is one of
IRHH’s key fundraising events: the charity
needs £3 million each year to help the 1,000
patients and their families it supports and
only 12 per cent of its funding comes from
the Government.
It costs £15 to enter the event and all
participants receive a T-shirt, water along
the route and breakfast. Further details
about the event and how to enter can be
found at www.gnwalk.com ion.

Buckinghamshire:
• up to £1 million per year to clean up.
• it also costs us all a poorer environment.
In Buckinghamshire the Illegal
Dumping Costs campaign (run jointly by
the local councils as the Waste Partnership
for Buckinghamshire and supported by
Thames Valley Police) brings those costs
back to the dumpers themselves:
Over 135 offenders have been
convicted in Buckinghamshire since 2006 at
a rough average of one every 10 days.
This has helped change the fly-tipping
problem in the county from a run away 10%
annual increase ten years ago, to a one third
reduction since 2003. Nearly half of all
convictions have resulted from evidence
supplied by eye witnesses to the offence:
If you believe you are witnessing
someone fly-tipping, please take and write down the vehicle registration number and
report what you have seen as soon as you
can to the Waste Partnership on 0845 330
1856 or by email to
illegaldumpingcosts@buckscc.gov.uk or
on line at
www.recycleforbuckinghamshire.co.uk
Illegal dumping often results from a
waste producer (including householders)
paying casual callers to remove their waste
without making the required checks to
ensure that the waste carrier is legally
authorised to remove the waste.
To check that the waste carrier is
authorised, please call the Environment
Agency on 08708 506 506 or check on line
at www2.environment-agency.gov.uk/epr/
The publicity campaign promotes that
we must all (even at home) do all we can to
ensure that the waste carrier is authorised. It
has been the law since 2005 and if we don’t
make sure we are using a registered carrier (please keep a record of who they
are and how they may be contacted or their
vehicle number) then we risk a fine if our
waste is dumped illegally by that person.

Anti-social behaviour
In Cheddington this month we
received a report of two cars racing up and
down the High Street. One resident in
Pitstone had eggs and oranges thrown at
their front door whilst another in Wingrave
had pasties and other food smeared over
their car. Another Wingrave resident heard a
knock on their door and when they answered
it they discovered fishing line tied to it and
several young people were heard running
away. The reel was left behind and is now
being kept at Wing Police Office. If you are
missing a fishing reel please get in touch

BROOKMEAD SCHOOL A Foundation School - Striving for excellence in
Learning, Living, Growing and Giving
BROOKMEAD CHOIR
TAKES STADIUM BY STORM It was sweet, sweet music all the way
at Milton Keynes Dons stadium on Saturday
February 27, as Brookmead School,
Ivinghoe, were among nine primary school
choirs showcasing their talent as part of the
Choir of the Year competition’s ‘Moving on
Up’ project.
Choir of the Year is a national
competition for choirs. Judges of the 2008
competition were so impressed with the
calibre of the youth choirs that entered that
they wanted to find a way for them to pass
on their expertise to primary school choirs.
The Moving on Up project, supported by
Sing Up! (a Government-funded National
Singing Programme which aims to put
singing at the heart of primary school-aged
children’s lives in England) was the result.
Members of three local youth choirs
and their conductors each visited three
primary schools to teach new
songs and work on performance
techniques, and each primary
school worked with its youth
choir to develop a solo piece for
the event at Milton Keynes.
Brookmead School received two
visits from some of the members
of Voice Squad Youth Choir
from Suffolk, led by Birgitte
Kenyon.
“The children really enjoyed the
rehearsals and were buzzing with
enthusiasm after the visits,” said
teacher Carol Nice.
Brookmead’s Key Stage 2 Choir
worked hard with its leader, Beth
Brimmicombe, and they were delighted to be
part of the performance in the Ballroom of
MK Dons Stadium, which showcased the
collaboration between the youth choirs and
primary schools.
Brookmead performed songs with
Voice Squad and the two other primary
schools in their group, and then performed
their solo piece, an arrangement of ‘You’ve
got a Friend in Me’ and ‘That’s what Friends
Are For’.
The children were spellbound when
they watched the three youth choirs perform
and this gave them the opportunity to see
what they could achieve in later life if they
keep singing, and their feedback shows how
much they enjoyed the experience.
“I thought the concert was fun and
exciting,” said Chloe Allder of Year 6. “It

was very colourful and all the parents really
enjoyed it as well as us. We all thought it
was well worth the long drive to MK Dons.
The concert was successful and we couldn’t
have done this without the help of the Voice
Squad. I thought it was really nice how they
put the junior choirs and senior choirs
together.”
Katie Crombie, of Year 6, agreed.
“The sound of everyone singing was
breathtaking and I don’t think I’ll ever forget
that moment in my life! My favourite bit of
the whole show was hearing everybody sing
and also singing our special songs, ‘You’ve
Got a Friend In Me’, and ‘That’s What
Friends Are For’. The Voice Squad where
amazing at helping us sing and perform and I
don’t think anyone could have sung that well
without their help, so thank you!”
Anna Darby, of Year 4, said, “I really
enjoyed the concert, because I got lots of
inspiration from the other children and I
enjoyed the other choirs’ singing.”
Jack Gomm, of Year 6, added, “All
the other choirs were fab. Watching the
adults doing the warm up was so funny.”
The reaction from staff and governors
has been equally enthusiastic. Headteacher
Bob Thomson said, “I now want the
achievements of the choir to have a 'kick
start' effect on the rest of the school. None
of this would have been possible without our
choir leaders’ vision and confidence that we
could make such a contribution to this
project. The choir have set an excellent
example, not only with their performance,
but by their outstanding behaviour,
teamwork and pride in their work.”
Elizabeth Young, a Brookmead
governor involved with the school’s
‘creative curriculum’, said a great deal had
been achieved since September, and that
Brookmead children and all the leaders and
supporters involved, (especially Carol Nice,
Beth Brimmicombe and Aidan Scahill) had
made the most of the opportunity of being
involved in the project. “‘You’ve Got a
Friend in Me/That’s What Friends are For’
was the most moving and well-prepared
presentation at Saturday’s event in Milton
Keynes, and I could think of no better way
of summing up something that is very
special about Brookmead and its pupils and
all its supporters. I hope the choir has an
opportunity to sing it all over again, very
soon.”
Chair of Governors Lisa Routh
agreed. “I was incredibly proud to be part of
Brookmead on February 27. Our children
did a marvellous job and were one of, if not
the best, children's choir in the room. If we
are able to do this on essentially half an hour
per week, then in the future we could be a
school well known for its singing prowess.
Hopefully this is just the start of a journey,
not only to encourage our children to enjoy
singing, but also to give them the confidence
to stand up in front of lots of people to do
something they love.”

The start of the summer term has been
a busy one already. The new children have
settled in well and are enjoying some new
equipment for inside and the outdoor play
area. In particular, the soft, life-like play
bricks have been a big hit with both children
and staff!
As you will have noticed, work on the
new Children’s centre and Pre-school
building at Brookmead School has finally
begun and us having our own purpose built
premises is one major step nearer to
becoming a reality. We have been told that
the building may be ready for us to move
into in November, after we return from the
half term break – we will eagerly wait to
see!
At the end of term we held our Easter
morning, with an Easter egg tombola and
various crafts for the children including icing
biscuits, decorating Easter baskets and filling
them with tiny chocolate eggs, and creating
bunny cards. It was a lovely morning and it
was made extra special as we also held a
little ‘graduation ceremony’ for the children
who were leaving Pre-school to move up to
Acorns nursery. We were honoured to have
the Vicar, Tracey Doyle, with us during the
morning, to read a book about the Easter
story to the children and then to present
graduation certificates to our leavers.
By the time you read this we will
have had our first ever Windmill Festival on
Bank Holiday Monday. Hopefully the
weather will have been kind to us and
everyone will have had an enjoyable day,
buying goods from the stalls and voting for
the best windmill entered in each of the three
categories. We hope that the event will have
raised some much needed funds for Pre-
school too. We will also have had our
AGM, which is taking place on
the 4th May. At this meeting we
review the past year and look to
the future, clearly an exciting one with the
move in prospect. We will have elected a
new Committee to take Pre-school through
the exciting changes that are heading our
way.
The Committee, staff and children are
planning our entry for this year’s float at St
Mary’s Summer Fete and we are also
holding a special ‘football’ event, to
celebrate the forthcoming football World
Cup. We have arranged for coaches from
‘Football Fever’ to visit Pre-school in June,
to come and play football with our children
and we will have some associated football
themed arts and crafts and activities going
on too.
Finally, and on a personal note, I am
stepping down from the Pre-school
Committee at the AGM after five years,

Baby and Toddler Group
About Us
The baby and toddler group is an
integral part of life in the village and a
wonderful opportunity for Mums, Dads,
Grandparents and carers to meet other
people in a similar position and share a
cuppa together. There have been some
wonderful friendships formed amongst both
the parents and our smaller members! It is
also a wonderful way for children to get to
know other children who they may
eventually go to pre-school or school with,
which will help them settle happily into their
new environment.
It has been lovely to see new Mums
and children join us and we would love to
meet even more newcomers to share in our
warm and friendly atmosphere.
Last Term
To celebrate
Easter, the children
enjoyed making their beautifully decorated
Easter cards with their fun and messy hand
and finger painting prints. After our hot-
cross buns and snacks we all enjoyed the
long awaited Easter egg hunt! Everyone
found an egg – even some of the grown-ups!
Tracey, our vicar from St Mary’s Church in
Ivinghoe, kindly read the Easter story to the
children to emphasise the meaning of Easter.
She clearly had the children engrossed in the
story, as they demonstrated important parts

of it such as, rolling away the large stone of
Jesus tomb. The children then went home as
bunnies after their faces were transformed by
Joe, who kindly volunteered to do the face
painting. All in all a lovely day was had by
all.
Summer Term
We will be planning our final session
of the school year, which will take the form
of a summer party which was a huge success
last year. Activities may include a picnic,
lots of fun with music, a bouncy castle and
face painting, alongside some of our regular
activities. Hopefully we will be wearing our
sandals and shorts soon very soon...
We will also say a sad farewell to
some of our children who will be starting
full time school in September, and we of
course wish them all the very best for the
future.
About us
Our craft activities which are
creatively overseen by Ruth, serve as a
highlight each week as it gives the children
an opportunity to have fun and make a mess
with glitter, paints, etc. (while keeping their
own homes clean!). Many mums volunteer
in taking turns in helping with the craft,
which enables the children to show off their
abilities and have something to take home.
There are a wide variety of toys for
the babies who are in a safe soft area where
they are able to explore and have fun, until
they are able to venture out into the larger
area of the hall. Our toddlers have a range of
toys and activities such as, dress up clothes,
train tracks, slides, a trampoline area, tents,
etc. We are able to alternate these toys to
keep the children happy and entertained each
week they visit. After snack time they can’t
wait to have a chance to whiz around on
various ride on toys. The session is finished
off with song time with instruments, which
the children really enjoy!
Throughout the year we will continue
to welcome visits from local organisations &
enterprises, with products such as books,
cosmetics, jewellery etc. to name but a few.
This offers retail opportunities for the
parents and as well as any new up-coming
entrepreneurs. 10% of all sales come back to
the group so it is a great way for us to
support local people and our group at the
same time. If you or anyone you know,
would like to run a stall or give a
demonstration at a session, please contact
Rob, our Chair, on 663615.
Our group is run every Wednesday
during term times between 1.20 pm & 2.50
pm. If you would like any further
information, please either check out our
website
www.pitstoneandivinghoetoddlers.com
or call us on 663615. We look forward to
welcoming you.

Chiltern Way Walking
Festival Programme - 2010
This walking programme has been set up to
celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Chiltern Way, it offers a wide range of walks to
suit all abilities, and aims to encourage more people to walk the Chiltern Way
The Chiltern Way is a circular walking route of around 200 km (125 miles) and there
are now three optional extensions taking the total route to a maximum of 278 km
(172 miles). It is a wandering, varied and mostly rural way stretching around the
Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and passing through many pretty
Chiltern villages.
These walks are open to the public – all are welcome, please come and join us on
these walk – there is no charge .
If you would like to walk the whole route, please note that Chiltern Society
volunteers are leading a series of linear walks on Sundays between May and
September which give you the opportunity to walk the whole of the original Chiltern
Way and receive a certificate when you complete the final walk in September!
All walkers join the walks at their own risk and are advised to carry their own first
aid kit, in addition please bring a packed lunch on longer walks as it is not always
possible to plan a lunch break near a local pub! If you are planning to join a walk, it
is helpful if you could phone the walk leader in advance so they have some idea of
numbers. Please be aware there may be limited parking in some locations.
For the latest information about the walking festival and the work of the Chiltern
Society please see our website www.chilternsociety.org.uk – more walks are being
added to this programme all the time so please see our website for the latest details

A Cure for Frankie
Gavin and Rita Ross live on Hever
Close, Castlemead with their two children
Cameron 8 and Francesca 5. Francesca
suffers from a complex neurological
condition called Rett Syndrome.
Rett Syndrome affects 1 in 10,000
girls and can happen in a family at anytime.
The condition means that most girls cannot
talk, walk or purposefully use their hands
and need 24 hour care for the rest of their
lives.
However, researchers have found how
to reverse the disorder in mice which means
that Rett Syndrome could be the first
reversible brain disorder.
As with all research, funding becomes
an issue and as such Rita and Gavin have
decided to hold a fundraising event both to
raise awareness of the condition and also to
raise funds to help find a cure.
Please help us to raise awareness and
funds by attending the Fun Day. The Fun
Day will be held on the Green at the top of
Castlemead and will start at 2pm finishing at
6pm.
There will be lots of things to do –
including:
Face Painting, Scavenger Hunt, BBQ,
Balloon Race, Fancy Dress, Bouncy Castle,
Tombola, Raffle, lots of games to keep the
children happy. There will also be lots of
stalls for parents to browse through. If you
would like to have a stall please let us know
by contacting Angele on 07834908019.
The faster we raise money, the
faster a cure will be found
We are also looking for donations for
the bottle tombola and raffle prizes - if you
would like to make donations to either the
bottle tombola or for the raffle please drop
them off to 14 Warwick Road, Castlemead.
If you would like to know more about
Rett Syndrome, please log on to

On Sunday 21st February, Rainbows,
Brownies, Guides, Rangers and Leaders
from Wing District (the villages of
Cheddington, Wing, Wingrave and Ivinghoe
& Pitstone) all came together in St Mary’s
Church, Ivinghoe to celebrate Thinking Day.
This is an important date in the Girlguiding
calendar as it is the birthdates of both Lord
and Lady Baden Powell and is a chance for
us all to think about Guiding friends across
the world. This year we were particularly
thinking of children affected by the recent
disaster in Haiti and consequently our
collection from the service of £31.71 has
been donated to Hope for Children, a charity
based in Hemel Hempstead, specifically for
the children in Haiti. The girls all had fun
joining in with singing, making friendship
knots and learning a little more about
Guiding traditions. Our thanks go to both
the Rev. Tracey for her support and to Linda
Sayles for playing the piano for us.
1st Ivinghoe & Pitstone Guides have
also been celebrating as 24th February was
their “first” birthday since re-opening in
Ivinghoe Town Hall. Numbers have slowly
increased over the year so that now we have
11 girls on the roll under the leadership of Jo
Hubbocks. We are all very keen for Guides
to continue but desperately need some more
adult help. If you think you can help, or just
would like some more information about
Guiding, please contact either Jo on 660708
or myself on 661540.

Girl Guiding Celebrations
Wing District
I have discovered that as well as
GirlguidingUK celebrating its Centenary this
year, 1st Ivinghoe & Pitstone Brownies are
40 years old! I have some typed notes from
those early days and thought I would share
some of them with you –
“After many months of enquiries
consulting parents, hiring halls etc it was
finally decided to start a Brownie Guide
Pack in Ivinghoe. On Tuesday 27th April
1970, Mrs Darvill and Mrs Randall took 11
girls to visit a Brownie Pack in Tring to have
their first experience of a Brownie meeting.
The following week, 4th May, 12 girls duly
met in the Bank Room of the Town Hall, and
so formed the 1st Ivinghoe & Pitstone
Brownie Guide Pack.
Parents and friends and new recruits
who were on the waiting list, were invited to
an open evening at the Town Hall on 29th
June when 12 girls (Karen and Michelle
Pollington, Caron Chatto, Julia Darvill,
Tonietta Newton, Marthanna Stevens, Elaine
Bull, Gillian Snow, Angela Dungworth, Kim
Mackenzie, Kate Goodman and Jane
Morgan) were enrolled by Mrs Murgatroyd,
the Division Commissioner. Parents agreed
to pay a subscription of 1/- (5p) because of
the high cost of hiring the Town Hall!
During the summer holidays, two
Brownies (Jane Morgan and Kim
Mackenzie) had a small stall outside their
homes and presented the sum of 7/9d (just
under 40p) to the Pack which they had
raised.
Autumn term started with quite a full
pack and Susan Poppitt, a future Guider we
hoped, came as a Unit Helper.

News from 1 s t
Ivinghoe & Pitstone Scout Group
Well we are already in April and as a
Scout Group we have been busy doing
various activities, here are just a few.
We ended 2009 with a Christmas
Carol Concert at St Mary’s Church, Ivinghoe,
we were accompanied by The Heath Band
and Alasdair Russell did a stirling job in
preparing mulled wine at the interval to keep
us warm on a snowy winter’s evening. The
Scout Group did us all proud by the rendition
of Twelve Days of Christmas.
The Scouts were the first ones of 2010
to go camping namely a Fire and Ice Camp
run at Tolmers – no guesses for why it is
called Fire and Ice! Moving on through the
year they entered two teams for the
Grimsdyke Hike, have entered a bowling
challenge and walked back from Aldbury to
HQ in the dark. The church also received a
good dust and polish one Friday night by the
Scouts. The Scouts have been working
towards their Community Challenge Badge
and Promise Challenge Badge - which in turn
helps them towards their Chief Scouts Gold
Award. Together they raised in excess of
£400, a fantastic amount, by wearing their
clothes backwards, apart from footwear and
walking backwards for 1 mile around The
Lawn for Sports Aid in the pouring rain. Not
as easy as it sounds.
Cubs too have been kept busy working
towards their badges namely chefs, ICT,
Community and first aid. They too have been
fundraising and perhaps I should comment on
how clean everyone’s car on Saturday 27th
(Continued on page 51)
1st Ivinghoe & Pitstone Scout
Group
A successful Autumn Fayre was held
in the Town Hall in September and the sum
of £46:14:8d was raised and we were able to
start buying equipment, the most important
being our Toadstool and Owl.
Most of the Pack attended the
combined Remembrance Service at Ivinghoe
Church in November, the first time they
were seen together in public and very smart
they looked too. The Pack was duly
registered at Headquarters on 10th
November 1970.
December 7th, our last meeting of the
year, we had a coffee evening for parents
and friends with a couple of stalls and a
further £8 was raised. The Brownies had a
group photograph taken.
We had a successful trip to the Ice
Pantomime at Wembley by coach for
Brownies and friends on December 21st and
two members of the Mothers Union were
invited as our guests.”
You may like to know that we still
have the original Toadstool and Owl and use
them every week! It would be interesting to
know if any of the original girls or Guiders
mentioned are still in the area – would they
be willing to come and talk to today’s
Brownies about what Brownies was like in
those early days? Does anyone have a copy
of that original group photograph taken in
December 1970?
Please get in touch with me – we
would love to hear from you!

March looked as the Cubs hosted a Charity
Car Wash in aid of Keech Cottage Children’s
Hospice raising a whopping £100. They have
had at least two trips out this term to Luton
Ambulance Station and Hazzard Alley in
MK. They have also been working on their
snow survival skills – very helpful
considering the snowfall we all experienced
the beginning of the year.
Not forgetting the Beavers who have
had a visit to St Marys Church working
towards their Faith Badge; plus they have
been working hard towards their Promise
Challenge Badge and ICT1 Badge. All the
Beavers in the district got together for
Handicraft Day in March. I & P Beavers
ended the term with Easter Activities.
As a whole group 1st Ivinghoe &
Pitstone Scout Group took over Tring
Swimming Pool on 6th March where we
hosted a swimming gala. This is one of the
ways we try to get all the children involved –
and they certainly had fun taking part in the
various relay races.
The next activity for the Group will be
on April 24th when we unveil the Joy
Hammond Memorial Plaque, between 2pm
and 4pm. We are being joined by The
Leighton and Linslade Concert Band who
will play an assortment of music for our
entertainment. For the children there will be
a string trail and treasure hunt and a
demonstration of backward cooking. This
event is free and we welcome everyone who
knew Joy and wish to be part of her Memorial
unveiling. Refreshments will be available.
Looking forward even further we have
the Children’s Disco on Sunday 27th June
2010 5:30 to 7pm for all children up to and
including year 6. This will take place in the
marquis on The Lawn. There will be sweets
and drinks available.
A note for your diary the AGM will be
held on 16th July at HQ, The Lawn, Ivinghoe
- the time has yet to be decided but keep an
eye out on the Ivinghoe/Pitstone village
website for timings of this and other events
mentioned. (Pitstone.co.uk or Ivinghoe.co.uk)
As you no doubt appreciate, Scouts is
run entirely by volunteers. Although we have
been very lucky to secure Leaders to run
Cubs on a Wednesday evening, Hattie is still
running Cubs on Thursdays 6:30 to 8pm with
very little committed support. This is a plea
to everyone out there who has had the
experience of Scouting or Girl Guiding (or
even if you haven’t) to come
forward and help Hattie – we
are not asking you to become
a warranted leader but great if
you wish to, just to put your
name forward to help on a
regular basis at the Thursday
meets, help in the planning,
take on some of the activities.
Just think what it will look
like on your CV. Please

direct for more information on

P & IC United created County Cup
history in the Berks & Bucks Junior Cup final
at Newport Pagnell Town last Saturday, when
in front of a crowd of 113 they retained the
trophy that they won ay Olney Town last
season. This year they beat Reading YMCA
Res 3-0 and in doing so completed a feat that
was last achieved at the turn of the century in
1901 and 1902, when Newbury retained the
trophy in consecutive seasons.
P & IC United started strongly on a
good playing surface and Carl Fox and Roy
Henney went close with some snap shots. P &
IC started to take control with Karl Thomas
and Roy Henney dominating in midfield, with
Reading YMCA having limited opportunities
to test Rob Adlem.
P & IC United created numerous
chances and finally took the lead after 29
minutes scoring with a beautiful shot on the
turn after a cross from the right.
Reading YMCA Res had a set back
after 33 minutes, when after a goalmouth
scramble and making two good saves, the
goalkeeper had to be substituted with a
dislocated finger.
After this incident, P & IC United
tested the new goalkeeper, but failed to find
the net again before half time.
P & IC United started the second half
looking to forge further head and after some
close misses, were rewarded fortunately,
when after 54minutes a good run by Roy
Henney, he saw his cross diverted into his
own net by a Reading YMCA Res defender to
make it 2-0.
P & IC United then started to play
some nice open football in the warm
conditions and Reading YMCA Res were
limited to few chances and Rob Adlem did
not have a shot to save.
P & IC United went further ahead after
59 minutes, when Paul Cavell beat the
Reading YMCA offside trap to drive the ball
home. After this P & IC United continued to
create chances and had two further goals
disallowed for offside, but still ran out
comfortable winners 3-0.
The Junior Cup was presented to Karl
Thomas by B&B President and Life Member
Bill Gosling, which led to the P & IC United
fans starting their joyous celebrations.
Unfortunately P & IC United will be unable to
try and make it three in a row next season as
with their anticipated promotion to the ADL
Premier next season they will have to play in
the Saturday Intermediate Cup.

Dear Reader
I hope you have all had a joyous
Easter; as always we have been very busy at
all three churches over the Easter period and
now with the lighter evenings and better
weather on its way we look forward to a
range of outdoor activities such as BBQ’s;
walks; concerts and fun days.
Easter is all about new life, new hope,
fresh beginnings; with all the signs of new
life and fresh beginnings around us we are
encouraged to put behind us some of those
things which have made us unhappy lately
so we can look forward to happier times.
Maybe you have fallen out with someone,
perhaps you have been hurt by someone’s
actions or it may be that you have done or
said something that you now regret; or there
could be something that just needs the
cobwebs removing so that you can look at it
in a fresh new way. Whatever it is; go for it
now! Make that fresh start.
All three of the benefice churches are
open for private prayer during the day and of
course you will be made very welcome at
any of the services or other events that we
hold. We also love to try and express our
faith and worship in fresh new ways so
please look out for new and exciting
ventures coming to our churches over this
year.
I look forward to seeing you.
God bless
Rev Tracey

Obituaries Rick Bateman
It is with sadness and regret that we
learn of the recent death of Rick Bateman,
painter and decorator who began advertising
in the PPP when the magazine was in it's
infancy. Rick had previously worked at
Tunnel Cement where an industrial accident
caused him the loss of sight in one eye. He
was a popular figure in the village who
would "..do anything to help". With his
young son Wayne at his side, in 1986, he
was instrumental, with Brian Baldry and
Gwyn Mead, in establishing the Junior
Football Club, where he took on the role of
Chief Coach to the Under 12 side which
Wayne captained. He stayed for six years,
during which time the team went from
accepting defeat stoically, to, with Rick's
encouragement, using their feet to develop
the winning habit. 'Life isn't about results,
it's about being and becoming' a
sentiment, that we can all agree with having
witnessed how individual team members
developed and how after nearly twenty five
years the Junior Football Club boasts a team
of 250 and a back room staff that has grown
from the original trio. Rick is survived by
his wife Joan, Wayne and his wife Zoe to
whom we extend our sympathy.
Carina Frances Clay
15th July 1956 - 24th March 2010
Carina and I
moved into Brook
End in 1985 with
our young son
Ben and Ashley
our daughter was
born the following
y e a r . B o t h
children went to
B r o o k m e a d
School where Carina was a teacher for a
while before going on to teach special needs.
Carina was quite a special person. She
was vibrant and joyful with interests in
music, art and crafts and fashion. Always
beautifully turned out she was fondly
referred to as the ‘Imelda Marcos’ of
Pitstone due to her love of shoes.
In spite of her long-term illness she
didn’t stop living life to the full. She and the
family travelled overseas on many occasions
and joined in the adventure of living in
Mexico in the early 90’s. Throughout her
illness I cannot recall Carina once
complaining about either the frequent
hospitalisations or her underlying condition.
She showed remarkable courage and fighting
spirit, particularly during the 12 long years
spent in her Nursing Home.
Family was very important to Carina
and so were her friends and she forged many
close friendships with fellow villagers. She
loved village parties and particularly fancy
dress where her sense of fun really showed –
we will never forget her two-headed woman
(with Lucy Culleton) prancing around on
stage!
Ben and Ashley have developed into
wonderful young adults. That they have
done so without a mother for so many of
their formative years is testament to the time
they spent with Carina in their early years.
Carina has now found peace and we
should be thankful for that.
