Principal’s Message P&C Week 3
Our next P&C meeting is on Tuesday 7 August at 7pm. At this meeting we
have two guest speakers. Janice Gooden, the Principal of Lucas Heights
Community School will be talking about programs and opportunities for
students. Parents are most welcome to come along and ask her any questions
about LHCS. Cr Steve Simpson will also be there to discuss safety concerns
and suggestions for safety improvements for the areas surrounding the
school now that the pedestrian bridge has been removed. Kinder 100 Days of Learning
There were some crazy hair styles at school on kinder students and staff on
Tuesday when we celebrated 100 days of learning. Students participated in
lots of fun activities throughout the day and into the evening. Many parents
attended the evening session to participate in fun activities with their child.
The afternoon was very successful and our Facebook page received lots of
positive feedback from the community. Education Week
Week 3 Term 3 is Education Week where public schools celebrate the
achievements of students across Key Learning Areas and in extracurricular
activities. We are looking forward to seeing lots of parents and family
friends on site for the Open Day on Wednesday 8 August. Full details of our
celebrations are in the flyer in this Grapevine. STEM
STEM education is the learning of science, technology, engineering and
mathematics in an integrated approach. Students gain and apply knowledge,
deepen their understanding and develop creative and critical thinking skills
within an authentic context. It may include inquiry and project-based
learning. STEM is part of our Strategic Plan and is a focus with Mrs Tobias
and Miss Hibbard in RFF. To further strengthen the implementation of
STEM, teachers are currently working together on integrating STEM into
Key Learning Areas.

On Tuesday 31 August 2018 the Girls Basketball Knockout Team played Sarah Redfern Public School at
Sutherland Basketball Stadium in the 5th round of the NSW PSSA Basketball Knockout Competition.
It was a difficult task for Sarah Redfern as they unfortunately had no substitutions. With illness and injury
our girls also had to play a lot of minutes as we only had one substitution.
Our girls certainly worked as a team and demonstrated outstanding defense. They were able to continue to
build their skills and communication and stretch the lead throughout the game, winning 46 to 20. I was so
impressed with their amazing effort and we
really enjoyed playing this game. Great spirit
was demonstrated by both teams.
Congratulations on a fantastic effort girls! You
have now won the Sydney East and Sydney
South West division. We will now take on the
winner of Sydney West to see who makes it to
the State Finals. Good luck girls. Sheridan Smith & Nicole Power

BOOK WEEK PERFORMANCE—K-6 INCURSION
Each year, schools and libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books, as well as Australian authors
and illustrators. Teachers and librarians conduct activities relating to the Book Week theme to highlight the
importance of reading and to celebrate Australian children’s literature. Book Week is celebrated in schools
during Week 5 (18-24 August 2018).
This year’s Book Week Theme is Find Your Treasure. As part of our Book Week celebrations we have a
visiting performance called “Treasure Hunt”. The performance is provided by Perform Educational Musicals
and is a multi award-winning theatrical producer and one of the largest touring theatre companies throughout
Australia and New Zealand. They have been operating for over eighteen years and provide a highly interactive,
comedic performance. Their performance will feature a selection of the Children’s Book Council 2018
Shortlisted books.
The performance will take place in the school hall on Thursday 23 August 2018 (Week 5) and the cost for each
student is $6.50. Please send your permission note and money to school, via the money collection box, by
Wednesday 15 August 2018 (Week 4).
Students in Kindergarten, Years 1 & 2 will have their performance in the hall 12.20pm – 1.35pm.
Students in Years 3 – 6 will have their performance in the hall 2.10pm – 3.20pm.
I know this is an enjoyable and valuable experience for the students and another way for us to celebrate
literacy in Book Week 2018.

The Bangor PS Year 6 Farewell will be held at Club
Menai on Thursday 6 December 2018.
In order to cover costs and minimise the impact
on families with several fundraising events,
parents are asked to pay $20 towards the cost of
the evening for their child. This would include
food and drinks, invitations, decorations, a small
gift to each student and the DVD we provide at
the end of the year.
The students will coordinate only two fundraising
events and the school will subsidise the remaining
costs of the event.
Students are invited to Parc Menai prior to the
event to meet for photos- more details will follow
regarding time. There will be no formal photo
opportunities; however, at the end of the evening,
when you join us, you are able to take photos.
We will also ask Year 5 parents to volunteer to set
up the decorations on the evening. A ‘Pay It Forward’ idea that will continue each year. This
frees up parents of Year 6 students to participate
in all the fun dressing, hair etc preparations and
of course the photos at Parc Menai.
Please return payment and note to the office by
Friday 24 August 2018. Denise Alexander
