2002 Ketcham MemorialAward

The 2002 Ketcham MemorialAward, given annually in honor of Al-bert H. Ketcham, founding member andfirst president of the American Board ofOrthodontics, has been awarded to DrsRobert J. Isaacson and O. B. Vaughn.This award is the highest honor bestowedby the ABO and is given to persons who,in the ABO’s judgment, have made ex-ceptional contributions to orthodontics.

Dr Isaacson received his DDS, MS inorthodontics, and PhD in anatomy from theUniversity of Minnesota. He served in theUnited States Army as a captain. He hasserved as professor and chairman of theorthodontics departments at the Universityof Minnesota, the University of Californiaat San Francisco, and Virginia Common-wealth University. He has served the pro-fession in many capacities through his

membership in various professional orga-nizations. He has lectured nationally andinternationally, and his research effortshave resulted in many worthwhile publica-tions, both singularly and with his students.His dedication to academics has had amarked impact on orthodontic educationover the last 40 years. Dr Isaacson iscurrently the editor of The Angle Orth-odontist.

Dr Vaughn, a native Texan, receivedhis BA from West Texas State College(now West Texas A&M University) andhis DDS from Saint Louis UniversitySchool of Dentistry in 1945. He servedas an officer in the Army and the Navyduring World War II and the KoreanWar. He practiced general dentistry inRobstown, Texas, until deciding to spe-cialize in periodontics. He received hisMSD from Northwestern UniversitySchool of Dentistry. He practiced peri-odontics for 10 years before completinghis orthodontic training at the University

of Missouri at Kansas City, receiving hisMS in 1961. Dr Vaughn has been in theexclusive practice of orthodontics inCorpus Christi, Texas, since then. He isboard certified in both periodontics andorthodontics. He served the ABO as adirector from the Southwestern Societyfrom 1981-1988 and as president in1988. This is his 22nd consecutive yearin service to the ABO.

Both of these men are giants in theirrespective fields, and it gives the ABOgreat pleasure to acknowledge theirachievements. The award will be pre-sented at the 2002 Annual Meeting of theAmerican Association of Orthodontics inPhiladelphia.
