WHY IS THIS CLASS VALUABLE? TEAMWORK—work together in most aspects! The show fails if one

accessible to wide audienceLearning lots more about
something we know a little about:Student talentsStudent hobbiesTeachers’ livesSpecific classes, in depthCommunity events, organizations
Bring light to people we rarely see
PSA (public service announcement)Interesting way to make someone aware of an issue, persuade, etc.

Intros—abstract, parodies, high energy
Instructional videosLots of faces!
What Makes a Good Video?
THINGS TO AVOIDwhen making videos
Same people, teachers or students Inside jokes—nicknames, slang, gangster spoofs, party
references… Parodies / copycat videos (same as movie/ tv show /youtube
video, meme, etc), strictly “blog” type videos Wrong aspect ratio if you’re using an iPod / iPhone, etc. Overdone ideas: best cars, reality TV copies, what are you
excited about for next year, spoofs, behind scenes of Seneca Says, etc.
Overdone locations: outside SVTV studio (NO!), against brick wall
Crooked tripods / shots, bad composition, lack of variety Unprofessional fonts: comic sans / apple casual / papyrus /
stencil Long interviews, interviews with only 1 angle, lack of close-ups,
lack of b-roll, inaudible interviews / interviews in really noisy places
Bad audio mixing and overpowering music, songs like “Eye of the Tiger”, scream-o, angry music, etc.

Writing Treatmentso PURPOSE: Explain purpose of video,
what audiences will get from it, your message, how it appeals to array of people, what makes it interesting.

o Beginning and midpoint of each 9 weeks. All online
o 1st treatment is due FRIDAY, JANUARY 23rd and is only for 1st half of 9 weeks—up through FEBRUARY 20th
PRODUCING / DIRECTING:o Write the script / rundown, provide transitions, have a meeting with
crew each time you produce / give rundown of every show & important things you planned. Know what videos are playing each day and what they are about, & write creative intros for them.
o You have creative control! Each week should be original. See the ideas sheet and planning document on my website.
o Get teleprompter set up correctly / quickly
o Bring on at least 1 new adult—teacher, administrator, coach, etc. each week.
o Work in pair / group. One producer must DIRECT show each day. o Directing the show: call shots for whole crew, tell switcher when
to switch, let us when videos are, tell audio to get ready for credits, keep cameras notified when they’re on or up next, provide countdowns, etc.
ANCHORINGo Nobody is required to anchor, but you are all
welcome to as long as you take it seriously and are appropriate.
o Anchoring for the whole semester = 100 points. If you choose not to anchor, your 2nd video evaluation for the 9 weeks will count for 200 points instead of 100.
o You must be professional and dress nicely! (Professional does not have to mean stuffy & boring).
o No sarcasm! & watch the videos that are
playing that day.
