The Italian Parish of Indianapolis
B envenuto! Welcome to Holy Rosary
Church! Whether you are a lifelong
parishioner, a first-time visitor to our
parish, or someone in between, we
are grateful you have joined us today.
Founded in 1909 as the Italian Parish of
Indianapolis, we continue to serve as
the parish home of people of Italian
heritage and also embrace all Catholics
in union with Rome, including those
devoted to the Traditional Latin Mass
(Extraordinary Form) and the Anglican
Usage of the Roman Rite.
In the words of our founding pastor,
Msgr. Marino Priori:
“The church is the temple of the
Lord, the gate of heaven. Come after a
week of earthly cares, after so much
toil, after so many sorrows, after so
much pain. Rest your limbs. Regenerate
your spirit at the sources of grace.
Raise your mind to God; thank Him for
the benefits received through His
creation and in daily life; ask for
strength so you can win all of life’s
struggles, and be able to possess the
fruits of redemption.”

Announcements
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Anthony
Mullen, the national director of the Flame of Love
movement. He died last Saturday while visiting Indi-
anapolis; he had been at Holy Rosary on March 6 to
speak to parishioners and Lumen Christi students.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed
rest in peace.
We will take up a second collection every Sunday
throughout Lent. This weekend’s will help offset the
costs of the parish’s FORMED subscription. Next
weekend’s is for the Holy Places in the Holy Land.
The parish office will be closed Monday for the
Feast of St. Joseph.
Palm Sunday is next weekend. Depending on
weather, all Masses will begin with the Blessing of
Palms in either the courtyard or in Priori Hall. The
Anglican Use will start at 7:30 a.m., one-half hour
earlier than usual.
Our liturgical schedule for the Paschal Triduum
and Easter Sunday is on Page 5.
Archbishop Thompson will be here to confer the
Sacrament of Confirmation in the Extraordinary
Form on Sunday, April 8, at 5:30 p.m. This will be a
confirmation service only, NOT a Mass; therefore, it
will not fulfill one’s obligation to attend Sunday
Mass. A reception for the confirmandi and their
families and sponsors will follow the service. All
confirmandi must meet with the archbishop at 4
p.m. in our second-floor classroom for questions
and preparation.
We will pray the Way of the Cross on Fridays of
Lent after the 7:30 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. Masses.
We are in need of teen and adult volunteers to help
clean and polish our brassware on Saturday, March
24, beginning at 9 a.m. Even those who can provide
only a couple of hours of labor are encouraged to
join us. This is an excellent way to get involved in
parish life and to meet other parishioners. Please
meet in our first-floor classroom, accessed via the
glass doors on the right (east) side of the courtyard.
The parish High School Youth Group meets today
for a St. Joseph’s Day party (Sunday) from 6 p.m. to
8 p.m. in our first-floor classroom. The group will
feast on City BBQ and play Stump the Priest.
Please pray for our sick and shut-in friends:
Debbie Barry, John Caito, Verna Carr, Katie Cecil,
Son Hui Christensen, Sharon Conrad, Carol Craig,
Nancy Duffy, Annette Dybas, Paquita Fallas, Jody
Gassert, Sam Gorsage, Robert Hanaway, Greg Latz,
Josephine Lombardo, Amy Mauck, Sidia Mora, Tony
Navarra, Nathan Oliver, Linda Sweatland, Phil
Vierneisel, Sister Rita Vukovic, Fr. James Wilmoth
and Jenifer Zehner.
The 40 Days for Life prayer vigil continues
through March 25. Holy Rosary parishioners have
been asked to pray outside the Planned Parenthood
facility at 8590 Georgetown Road especially on Sat-
urdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Members of our
Knights of Columbus council are most especially
encouraged to be there from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the
final Saturday, March 24. To learn more or sign up,

W hen you came into church this weekend, the
statues were covered. The Fifth week of Lent
until the Triduum is known as Passiontide. During
these last days of Lent we are to keep our hearts and
souls tied to the Lord in His Passion.
So why do we veil statues? Statues are veiled to
help us realize what it would be like NOT to have the
fruits of the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus.* Had
our Lord not died and rose from the grave, there
would be no saints, no images of the Passion, no im-
ages of the Sacred Heart. Looked upon on a regular
basis, these images become “normal” and taken for
granted. We veil them to emphasize how good they
are. By taking them away, we appreciate their good-
ness in a new way.
The cross will be unveiled at the celebration of our
Lord’s Passion on Good Friday. The liturgy that day
calls for the cross to be unveiled, then for the people
to come forward and venerate it, traditionally by a
kiss.
The other images of saints and our resurrected Lord
remain veiled until the Easter Vigil. Traditionally
celebrated after dark on Holy Saturday, the Easter
Vigil is our ancient anticipation of and celebration of
the Resurrection. The statues are unveiled then be-
cause the Resurrection brings them meaning. The
Resurrection opens the doors of heaven and allows
the saints to live in Glory.
In our Catholic Tradition we veil things that are
good, beautiful, mysterious and life-giving: chalices,
tabernacles, statues and even girls on their first com-
munion and brides on their wedding day. May we
enter into this mystery with eyes and hearts open.
Appunti del Parroco: a Message from the Pastor
Why do we veil the statues during Passiontide?
* Throughout Lent we experience a series of increasing sacramental deprivations: We are deprived of the Alleluia beginning
on Ash Wednesday; we are deprived of the Gloria during Lent except for Solemnities; we are deprived of the crucifix and stat-
ues at the start of Passiontide; we are deprived of Holy Water during the Triduum; finally, we are deprived of the Lord Him-
self in the Blessed Sacrament and the celebration of Holy Mass on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. All are restored in glori-
ous fashion — solemnly and progressively — during the Easter Vigil: first the statues, then the Gloria, then the Alleluia, then
the Holy Water, finally the Holy Eucharist — so many treasures in the sacred liturgy that we come to appreciate more keenly
this holy time of year.

Ready Reasons:
Is the Holy Spirit the
Same as ‘the Force’?
This three-minute video from Catholic Answers debunks the he-retical idea of a universal, imper-sonal force, which is how some quasi-Christian groups describe the Holy Spirit.
I f any house should be found
where there was no monk who
was troublesome and of a bad dispo-
sition, it would be well to look for
one, and to pay him at a high rate for
the great good that results from this
evil when judiciously managed. — St. Bernard

Are you ready for Divine Mercy Sunday?
S t. Faustina learned from Je-
sus to trust in Him. Fr. Ignacy
Różycki, the Polish theologian who
examined St. Faustina’s diary for
her cause of canonization, said,
“This trust is self-surrender that
sets the believer free from cares
of life and death. This trust, to be
genuine, implies and contains the
desire to love God by loving our
neighbor in the deeds of Mercy.”
St. Paul says, “The life of good
deeds God has prepared for us in advance.” (Eph.
2:10). Continue praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.
We will conduct a special Divine Mercy Service here
on Sunday, April 8, at 3 p.m.

PRAYER OF ST. AUGUSTINE
L ord Jesus, let me know
myself and know You,
And desire nothing, save only
You.
Let me hate myself and love
You.
Let me do everything for the
sake of You.
Let me humble myself and
exalt You.
Let me think of nothing except You.
Let me die to myself and live in You.
Let me accept whatever happens as from You.
Let me banish self and follow You,
And ever desire to follow You.
Let me fly from myself and take refuge in You,
That I may deserve to be defended by You.
Let me fear for myself, let me fear You,
And let me be among those who are chosen by You.
Let me distrust myself and put my trust in You.
Let me be willing to obey for the sake of You.
Let me cling to nothing, save only to You,
And let me be poor because of You.
Look upon me, that I may love You.
Call me, that I may see You,
And forever enjoy You. Amen.
