Do the math!), ob-servationsbyJudgeVarinabouttheevolutionoforderandlawontheCamasPrai-rie,andaprogressreportontheongoingrestorationoftheGeorgeCarricoinfor-mationalsignattheJohn-sonHilloverlooksite-thecarvingmysteriouslydisap-pearedsomeyearsago. Other activities will in-cludeaperformancebythe

IdahoOldTimeFiddlers,and a performance of theCamasanthem,“OCam-asMyCamas,”writtenbythelateRalphCroner.ThePicnicwillalsofeaturethebigCamashistorytimelineexhibit! ThefirstCamasPioneerPicnicwasheldin1913inthethen-bustlingtownofSoldier, Idaho, just twomilesnorthoftoday’sbus-tlingtownofFairfield,nowthe Camas County seat.Since then, the CamasPioneerPicnic,organizedbytheCamasPioneerPic-nicAssociation,hastakenplaceeverysummer,infoulweatherand(mostly)fair,tocelebratethefirstinhab-itantsoftheCamasPrairieandtheircontemporarysuc-cessorsinabigcommunitypotluck! It’sa103yearsofpotluckpicnic perfection, an un-brokenchainofthree-beansalads,roastbeef,startlingjellodishes,brownies,cook-ies,greensalads,macandcheese, scalloped pota-

toes,etc.,reachingbacktotheyoungyearsofthe20thCentury! Imagine!Thinkaboutit!TheCamasPioneerPicnichassurvivedannuallyfromtheageofhorseandbuggiesandsteamtractors,throughtheageoftheautomobile,tothespaceage,intothecom-puterage,andintowhateveragecomesnext!Overallthattime,theCamaspicnickershaveseengoodharvestsandlean,peaceandwar,bountyanddepressions,birthandloss,industriesgo,andin-dustriesarrive.ThePioneerPicnichassurvived,givingCamas Pioneers old andyoungasummerafternoondedicatedtohonoringto-gether those have come,andwhohavepassed,inourhighIdahovalleybeneaththesun. The Idaho Transporta-tionDepartmentwillholdacommunityadvisorycom-mittee meeting Thursday(July 14) to gather addi-tionalinputaboutpotentialfuturesafetyimprovementsfortheU.S.20andIdaho75(TimmermanJunction)in-tersection.Commentsfromthemeetingwillbeusedtofurtherdevelopsafetyalter-nativesfortheproject. Vancewastheoldestof9children.HewasraisedonadairyfarminWendell,whereheattendedschoolandgraduatedfromWendellHigh School in 1983. After graduation heservedaLDSmissiontoTennesseeNashvillein1983-85. Afterhismissionhemarriedhissweetheart,KarenGrover,intheLoganUtahTemple.Theyrecentlycelebratedtheir30thanniversaryonJune26th.VanceandKarenwereblessedwith6children,3sonsand3daughters. Vancelovedhischildrendeeplyandwasveryinvolvedintheirlives.Manyoftheactivitieshewasinvolvedwithhappenedbe-causehewantedtobewithhischildren.VancecoachedGoodingRecdistrictsoccerforthemanyyearsthathischildrenwerein-volvedwiththatsport.HecoachedGoodingRecdistrictfootballfor2yearswhenhisson,Mikewantedtodothat.Whenhisoldestson,Chrisstartedrunningcrosscountryinhighschool,itwasanaturalfitforVancetobecometheassistantcoach.Hecoachedcrosscountryforabout15yearsandlovedthatsportandworkingwiththeyouth.Helovedrunningwiththemanddevelopedadeepfriendshipwithmanyofhisrunners.VancewasveryinvolvedinScouting.BeginningwithwhenhewasayouthhelovedtheScoutingprogram.HeearnedhisEagleScoutBadgeatage14andcontinuedtobeinvolvedinscoutingatmanylevelssincethattime.Helovedservingasscoutmaster,andinrecentyearshelovedhelpingyouthreceivetheirEagleAwardsbybeingtheadvancementchairmanoverthat. Vancelovedmusic.HeenjoyedsingingintheGoodingcom-munityChristmascantataformanyyears,usuallywithatleastoneofhischildren.Vancevaluedhardworkandtaughthischildrentoworkhardbyworkingalongsidethemdoingpaperroutesandmowinglawns. AfterVanceandKarenmarried,theylivedinKimberlyandthenRupert.HelovedhisemployersinRupert;theBaileyfamilybecamefamilytohim.ItwasadifficultdecisiontoleavetheiremploymentandmovetoGoodingnearfamilyin1992.VancebecameacropadvisorforValleyCo-op,thenLandviewfertilizer,andfinallySimplotGrowerSolutionsthepast12years.Helovedhisjobandmademanyclosefriends.Helovedtheloyaltyofhiscustomersovertheyears. VancewasanactivememberofTheChurchofJesusChristofLatter-daySaints.Heservedinmanycallingsovertheyears,includingasacounselorto3Bishops,ontheWendell

o b i t u a r yStakeHighCouncil,andrecentlyasBishopoftheGood-ing1stWard.HelovedwhenheservedasthechoristerinPrimaryandtaughtearlymorningseminarybecausehewasworkingcloselywithyouth.

Vancelovedhisfamilydeeply.Hewasveryinvolvedinthelivesofnotonlyhischildren,buthisniecesandnephews,andastrayortwothatbecamefamily.Hetrulyenjoyeddevelopingarelationshipwiththemandservingasarolemodelforthem. Heissurvivedbyhiswife,Karen;threesons,Chris(Kathy)ofElko,Nevada;NathanofBoise,Idaho;Michael(Katie)ofGooding;andthreedaughters,Jessica(Josh)PayneofOrem,Utah;Lisa,servingaLDSmissioninWestVirginia,Charleston;andCamilla,Gooding;and6be-lovedgrandchildren,withanotherdueinSep-tember.Vanceisalsosurvivedbyhismother,

FishmanagersattheNezPerceTribewilldeliverthreelampreytotheNatureCenteronMonday,July11togivevisitorstheopportunitytoseetheseamazing fish close-upthroughoneofthecen-ter’slargeaquariums. Pacificlamprey,some-timesincorrectlyreferredtoaseels,aretheleastun-derstoodofIdaho’snativefish.Theyareanadromous,meaningtheyareborninfreshwater,thenmigratetosaltwater,andreturntofreshwatertospawn. TheyarealsothemostprimitivefishinIdaho,theiran-cestorsdatingback500millionyears.Theyhavenobone,onlycartilage,andswimwithoutpairedfins.Sincetheylackjaws,theyobtaintheirfoodthroughasuckingdisk.AdultsmigrateatthesametimeasspringChinooksalmon,reachingheadwaterstreamsbySeptember.TheyspendthewinterthereandspawnbetweenAprilandJulyinsandygravelareas.Oncetheeggshatch,thejuvenilesburrowinsandyareasforuptosixyears,feedingonplankton. Whentheyreachfivetotwelveinches,younglamprey,calledamocetes,startdriftingdownstreamtowardtheoceananddevelopeyesandatoothymouth.Intheoceantheyareparasitic,attachingthemselvestootherfish.Theycangrowtoalmost27inchesinthetwoyearstheyspendintheoceanbeforetheyheadupstreamtospawn,oftencatchingarideonadultsalmonandsteelhead. Onceresidinginallwaterswheresalmonandsteelheadlived,recentobservationshavebeenlimitedtosometribu-tariesintheClearwaterandSalmonRiverdrainages. TheNatureCenterislocatedat600SouthWalnutStreetbehindFishandGameHeadquarters.

Highway 75 A 10-mile-long pavingprojectpairedwithtwocul-vertreplacementsandbridgerehabilitation work beginsMonday(July18)alongIdaho75insouthernBlaineCounty.The pavement-preservationprojectwillextendthelifeoftheexistingroadwayandtheRichfieldCanalbridge. The initial phase of theprojectwillreplaceastorm-waterculvertandrebuildtheroadway at another culvert—bothlocatednearmilepost100abouttwomilessouthoftheU.S.20intersection(Tim-merman Junction). At bothexisting culvert crossings,theroadwayfoundationhassettled,resultingincrackingandadip.Repairsandreha-bilitationwillalsotakeplaceonthebridgeovertheRich-field Canal and the drivingsurface. Duringthisproject,trafficwillbereducedtoonelaneateachlocationwithtemporarytrafficsignalscontrollingtheflowoftrafficthroughtheworkzones.Driverscanexpectmi-nordelaysuptofiveminuteslongateachlocation. Followingbridgeandcul-vertwork,anasphaltoverlaywillbeplacedovertheentirestretchofIdaho75betweentheRichfieldCanalandtheU.S.20intersection. Trafficwillbereducedtoasinglelanethroughtheactiveworkareaoftheconstructionzone.Driversshouldwatchforf laggersandexpectdelaysofupto15minutes.Apilotcarwillbeinoperationanda15-footwidthlimitwillbeineffect.
