Geology of the Area
Most of the area is covered by Charnockite, (commercially known as Granite). Charnockite is well
exposed in the old quarry pit which is located on the southern side of the proposed quarry area. The
top soil and weathered Charnockite is having a depth persistence varying from 0.5 m to1.0 m.
The geological parameters / features of the ore body as obtained from the field mapping and
exploration studies reveal the following.
General strike : N- S with local variation of 100 - 150 on either side.
Dip : 75 - 80° dipping easterly.
Length of the ore body : 220-250 m.
Width of the ore body : 120-150m
Depth of the ore body : 50.00 m
Exploration &Reserves
The area proposed for grant of quarry permit is exposed with Charnockite outcrop at places in the
south of the proposed area, a quarry was working for a long time and exposes the formation quite
well. On the northern side of the plot also, there are worked out pits which exposes the geological
cross section. Hence the deposit in the plot is well known. No explorations in the form of bore holes
are carried out as it is in the proposed area. Moreover, Charnockite is a Plutonic Igneous Rock which
is deep seated, and hence no exploration is required.
The said permit area is proposed for Granite Building Stone quarry. Charnockite is exposed in the
quarry pit and Charnockite boulder outcrops with 0.5 to 1.5 m thin layer of top soil and weathered
Charnockite. The reserve is calculated for 3 categories
1. Geological reserves, ie, total reserves available in the entire area
2. Minable reserves available with the ultimate pit limit after leveling the bench
width and height
3. Blocked reserves, reserves are blocked due to bench formation and boundary
constraints and in buffer zone area. In minable reserves 95% is saleable and rest
5% will be waste.
Accordingly the reserves have been estimated and the details of the same are given below
Insitu reserves Unit : in MT

The estimation of ore reserves is made by conventional parallel cross section method using geological
cross-section. The 2 numbers of geological cross sections (A-A! and B-B!) are prepared at a regular
interval of 50 m across the strike of the ore body. The area of individual litho units in each and every
cross section is calculated separately. The volume between the cross- section is arrived on the basis of
the average area of parallel cross section, ie, ((S1+S2)/2) and multiplying sectional interval volume in
m3 is arrived. Tonnage is arrived by multiplying by its bulk density.

Method of Quarrying
The quarry will be working with conventional open cast mechanized method. Based on the mode and
method so adopted and taking into the consideration of geological parameters of the granite /
Charnockite body, the quarry pit is so designed such that the height of the bench is kept about 5.0 m
and the width is also kept min. 5.0 m, maintaining 65o pit slope.
Mode of operation (quarrying) will be semi mechanized open cast
Drilling will be done by using Jack hammer drills of 32 mm dia holes
For blasting, Nitrate Mixture type of explosives (Class 2) will be used
Initial bench height will be 2.5 m, at the final (ultimate) stage bench height, it
will be maintained 5.0 m and bench width will be narrowed to absolute
necessity
At final stage the slope of the bench will be maintaining 65o slope. (Since
granite is hard rock)
Boulders so generated subsequent to the blasting, this will be broken with the
help of the rock breakers
Loading of fragmented material into the Tippers with the help of Excavators.
Drilling & Blasting
Since the bench height needs to be maintained 5.0 m, blast hole will be by jack hammer where the
diameter is normally 32 mm and the depth of the hole is 2.5 to 2.6 m. Blasting pattern is generally
square or staggered with burden ranging from 0.75 to 1.00 meters and spacing of 1.0 to1.2 meters.
Usually single / double row of holes is blasted along free face to achieve optimum powder factor, best
fragmentation and minimized adverse impacts on account of blasting. Maximum holes blasted per day
are 30 to 40 with normal delay detonators to mitigate adverse impacts such as air blast, throw and the
ground vibration.
Holes are electrically detonated using electric detonators.
Nitrate mixture (Class-2) types of explosives are used for blasting with 20 to 25 percent, proportion of
primer/ booster cartridges and rest as column charge. About 2 to 3 kg of explosives are loaded in 32
mm diameter holes. And powder factor ranging between 7 to 8 tonnes per kg of explosives is achieved
Lessee is having the Explosive license. A copy of the explosive license is enclosed as Annexure 6 in
the Approved Mining Plan.
Loading and Hauling:
Loading of the building stone blocks will be done mechanically to tippers of 10 tonnes capacity and
transported from the quarry to the stockyard and mineral rejection/waste will also be handled
mechanically. In the quarry the road will be maintained with 1 in 16 gradients. Sufficient number of
bunds and parapet walls will be made all along the quarry haulage roads wherever necessary in order
to maintain safe working conditions by using the waste generated during the course of quarry
operations.
Solid waste Management:
Over burden and Intercalated waste is to be handled during the quarrying operations is less as the
entire area is almost a rocky terrain. An estimated quantity of around 20,180 MT is required to be
handled during the proposed plan period to temporarily accommodate this waste material, non-
mineralized 7.5m safety zone of the permit boundary same will be utilized for formation of safety
bunds all along the 7.5m safety zone, internal road maintenance &green belt works.
Hydrology:
The general ground water table in this area is 10 – 15 m below the general ground level during the
summer and around 8 - 15 m during monsoon. Since the quarry falls on the hillock, and the ground
water table is 10 -15 m below the general ground level, none of the quarry workings will touch the
water table. The workings are very much above the ground water table. Water resources in this area
are ground water and rainwater. The area receives copious amount of rainfall 3,000 – 4,000 mm
annually on an average. The level of water table in the open wells is shallow i.e. about 10 – 15 m
depth during the summer and 8 – 15 m during monsoon from the general ground level. There are no
perennial water courses / bodies within the permit hold area, entire storm water flows through the
minor watercourses and joins the adjoining seasonal nallahs. The drainage pattern in this area is
dendritic in nature.
4. SITE ANALYSIS
Connectivity
The quarry permit area is easily accessible in all seasonal conditions. The quarry permit area is
around 33 kms aerial distance from Ernakulam via Selam-Kochi-Kanyakumari high way to

Green Belt Development
It is proposed to develop a green belt outside the permit area. In addition, the place around the haul
road outside the permit area after obtaining necessary permissions from concerned authorities. It is
proposed to carry out afforestation by planting 100 saplings per year. Proper care will be taken for
projection & growth of these saplings.
The afforestation to be taken up provides the requisite floral biodiversity. At the end of the plan period
non rocky area if any will be afforested and wherever possible and along roadsides afforestation will
be proposed of area is earmarked for afforestation during the proposed plan period.
During the afforestation work, the combination of different species shall be done. This selection shall
be made on the basis of the local plant growth in this surrounding area. It is always better to plant
mixed species together. Guidance from the local forest department shall be taken in the selection of
species and their maintenance. The plantation work requires considerable quantities of seeds, seedlings
and saplings of different species: Nursery stock for this plantation will be available from the local
forest and Horticulture department.
Plantation crops like Rubber, Pepper, Arecanut, Coconut, fruit bearing trees like Mango, other plants
such as Mahagoni, Rain tree, Bougainvillea, Red Palm and local species with thick foliage to arrest
dust dispersion due to movement of vehicles will be planted
Assessment of Infrastructure Demand:
The existing road network will be sufficient to meet the proposed capacity; however required
infrastructure for transport within the permithold area will be further strengthened and improved. No
new routes or alternations are required in this regards.
Amenities/Facilities
Applicant proposes to employ about 40 persons. This employment has a positive impact on the socio-
economic conditions of the surrounding as most of the work force employed will be from the nearby
areas. Local persons will be hired for meeting the requirement of truck loading, plantation,
construction of check dams, retaining walls etc.
The benefits due to quarry to the local population will be in the form of Direct and indirect
employment opportunities.
6. PROPOSED INFRASTRUCTURE
The extent of permit area 0.9886 Hectares of Private Patta land is recommended for grant and is under
process at the Department of Mines &Geology. The proposed method of quarry operation will be semi
mechanized method of opencast Quarry with jackhammer drilling &blasting with tipper/tractors for
internal transport. The permit area does not have any public roads, railway lines, telephone lines,
public buildings etc.
Present infrastructure will meet the requirement of the project. The conditions of the roads in the
buffer zone are unlikely to be impacted due to the proposed medium scale expansion. The project
authorities in association with the adjacent quarry owners &district administration will also contribute
to development &maintenance of roads.
Social Infrastructure
The quarry permit area is easily accessible in all seasonal conditions. The quarry permit area is around
33 km aerial distance from Ernakulam via Selam-Kochi-Kanyakumari high way to Angamaly .The
quarry location is 7.5km from Main central road(State Highway) and 9 km from NH-47. The nearest
rail head on Broad Gauge is Angamaly railway station, which is at a distance of 10 km approximately
and the nearest Air port is Cochin International Air Port (Cochin) about 11 km and Harbour is Kochi
at a distance of 36 km.
Drinking Water Management
There are no Water courses within or adjacent to the quarry permit and hence there is no possibility of
disturbance &rainwater will continue to flow in the same direction as it is in existence. Since the water
is not withdrawn (from any source outside the permit area) for quarry purposes for quarrying
operations no adverse impact is foreseen on the existing water regime. The rainwater stored in the pits
shall be utilized for mitigating dust and other activities.
The surface water in the buffer zone is in the form of seasonal rainfall and the ground water bodies
encountered below 20-25 depth in the area from the surface level. The area is small; so far no report
on hydrological studies has been carried out in the area under question. There is no potential of acid
mine drainage. The drinking water is available from nearby bore wells and water can be stored into
sintex tanks. During the course of quarry operation no diversion of water course is considered as it
doesn’t exists.
Sewage System
The existing watercourses shall not be disturbed and rain water will continue to flow in the same
direction. Check dams shall be constructed in the nallahs of the buffer zone and retain walls
constructed by the side of the O.B.Dumps, water will percolate in the premises of the quarry area.
There is no generation of domestic sewage.
Industrial Waste Management
There is no generation of affluent/toxic substance; hence treatment of quarry water doesn’t arise.
Solid Waste management
Over burden and Intercalated waste is to be handled during the quarrying operations is less as the
entire area is almost a rocky terrain. An estimated quantity of around 20,180 MT is required to be
handled during the proposed plan period to temporarily accommodate this waste material, non-
mineralized 7.5m safety zone of the permit boundary same will be utilized for formation of safety
bunds all along the 7.5m safety zone, internal road maintenance &green belt works.
Power requirement and supply
There will not be any requirement of power supply to the project site. The quarry activities are
envisaged to be carried out only during day time for drilling, loading, unloading by excavators & with
tippers for transport & all the equipment shall be operated with diesel as motive power. For operation
of the quarry no power supply is required as the HEMMs will be operated by HSD. The power supply
which will be required for office and work shop will be met through Kerala State Electricity Board.
7. REHABILITATION AND RESETTLEMENT PLAN
Surface Quarry will make alteration in the area by way of excavation and surface dumps. This will
lead to water pollution, silting of agricultural lands; air pollution etc if proper care is not taken. The
primary objectives of reclamation are to restore the affected area to the original state as near as
possible.
The various reclamation proposals planned during the plan period as well rest of the quarry periods
such as road working benches with safe angle of slope, installation of effective drainage system,
prevention of erosion and excessive run off &re-vegetation or afforestation.
As far as quarry area is concerned, so far none of the proposed quarry area is matures or completely
exhausted as this is a new permit in the process of grant. Hence, the measures like retention walls,
drainage system and afforestation works etc., shall be taken up.
