Program #1Dr. Paul Shapiro, a local urologist, talked aboutthe importance of prostate cancer screening. Herecommends having the PSA blood test and therectal exam beginning at age 40. Since screening(PSA) started the disease presenting itself hasdecreased from 25% down to 5%. Because of earlydiagnosis, people have longer life expectancies. Ifprostate cancer is detected early, it is curable. However, once it gets into the lymph nodes andbones, a person’s life expectancy is only 3-5 years.

Dr. Shapiro commented on the new DaVinciRobot that Thompson Health has – it requiresvery small incisions, is more accurate, and thereis less pain and bleeding for the patient.

Program #2Julia Lafuente Verdin, our exchangestudent from a small town in thenorth of Spain, talked of her family, her home, her school, and the deli-cious Spanish foods. Julia’s parentswere alone this year, as her youngerbrother spent the year as anexchange student in Ireland. Julia’s

school is internationally based, so they areencouraged to do two week exchanges each year.Julia and her family travel a lot – Egypt, France,USA, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Jamaica,Mexico & Greece! She commented that she likesschool here much better than in Spain – sheprefers the moving from class to class; and theextra tutoring/help given here. In Spain, girlsplay basketball and boys play soccer. They do nothave the sport choices we have in USA. She lovesfood in her home country, but has found she’s nota great cook yet! Her city is famous for the“Running of the Bulls” when the population ofresidents and guests jumps to 300,000! Julia’sloves include ice skating, skiing and riding rollercoasters.
