Janet Tenreiro - wedding in St. Thomas/St. John Mark Vahey procured the Pit Pass for $30 Program #1 Dr. Paul Shapiro, a local urologist, talked about the importance of prostate cancer screening. He recommends having the PSA blood test and the rectal exam beginning at age 40. Since screening (PSA) started the disease presenting itself has decreased from 25% down to 5%. Because of early diagnosis, people have longer life expectancies. If prostate cancer is detected early, it is curable. However, once it gets into the lymph nodes and bones, a person’s life expectancy is only 3-5 years. Dr. Shapiro commented on the new DaVinci Robot that Thompson Health has – it requires very small incisions, is more accurate, and there is less pain and bleeding for the patient. Program #2 Julia Lafuente Verdin, our exchange student from a small town in the north of Spain, talked of her family, her home, her school, and the deli- cious Spanish foods. Julia’s parents were alone this year, as her younger brother spent the year as an exchange student in Ireland. Julia’s school is internationally based, so they are encouraged to do two week exchanges each year. Julia and her family travel a lot – Egypt, France, USA, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Jamaica, Mexico & Greece! She commented that she likes school here much better than in Spain – she prefers the moving from class to class; and the extra tutoring/help given here. In Spain, girls play basketball and boys play soccer. They do not have the sport choices we have in USA. She loves food in her home country, but has found she’s not a great cook yet! Her city is famous for the “Running of the Bulls” when the population of residents and guests jumps to 300,000! Julia’s loves include ice skating, skiing and riding roller coasters. She thanked our club for a fantastic experience this year and gave special thanks to her host mother. 50/50: The jackpot is at $600. Julia drew the 10 of Clubs (for Ben Gullo) and Dick Murphy won $25.
