THE FLEXIBLE ARRANGEMENT A memorial service not only ensures a unique experience that

both celebrates the life of the deceased and recognizes his or her death, but it also allows for flexibility in timing and planning. The service can be planned to take place days, weeks, or even months after death because the body of the deceased is usually not present. This important difference allows family and friends the luxury of tailoring the ceremony to a form and venue most in keeping with their wishes and ideas. With this in mind, services are often held at locations that are most meaningful and appropriate to the deceased and his or her family and friends, with music, readings, eulogies, and photo collages.

Should a memorial service be something that you feel is appropriate for your situation, contact us today. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME is here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (585) 346-5401 . We will provide you with a wide range of commemorative options to fit your taste and budget. You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facilities, conveniently located at Livonia and Honeoye, NY .

QUOTE: “What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes part of us.”

– Helen Keller

How far you go in life depends on your being tender w ith the young, compassionate w ith the aged, sympathetic w ith the striving and tolerant of the w eak and strong. Because someday in your life you w ill have been all of these. - George Washington Carver

The most important thing is to enjoy your life - to be happy - it’s all that matters.

Local Living Healthy Workshops Help Folks With Chronic Disease

One out of every two adults in the U.S. has at least one chronic disease. Chronic disease limits daily activities for 25% of the people diagnosed. In 2014, Noyes Health received grant funding from the Genesee Valley Health Partnership to provide Chronic Disease Self-Management programs called Living Healthy and Living Healthy with Diabetes.

Classes are for adults with an ongoing health condition who feel limited in day-to-day activities, or feel tired, alone, or fearful and are looking for better ways to manage their symptoms. If you have conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic pain, anxiety, local Living Healthy workshops can help you take charge of your life.

Evidence from clinical trials and program evaluations reveal that participants:

* Feel better, increase their energy, and experience relief from pain, fatigue, and anxiety

* Discover better nutrition and exercise choices

* Understand new treatment options

* Learn better ways to talk about their health with their doctor and family members

* Connect with and learn from others with similar health issues

* Gain confidence in their ability to manage their health

Since 2014, more than 100 Livingston County residents have participated in Living Healthy workshops. After attending, folks are saying:

“I was tired. My pain was my boss.

It was telling me what I could and couldn’t do. . . . Living Healthy workshops put me back in charge.”

“Now I have the energy to do the things that matter. I am calmer and more confident about my health. I got relief from my pain.”

Workshops in Livingston County are FREE and taught by trained and certified instructors. Classes are 2 1 ⁄ 2 ½ hours long and held for six weeks each spring and fall. Participants receive a Living Healthy Life Book and relaxation CD. Class size is limited.

If you are an open-minded, friendly individual who is comfortable speaking in front of small groups and enjoys helping people, consider volunteering as a Living Healthy Peer Leader. Workshop materials are scripted and content for the workshop is provided for you and easy to use! You’ll receive free training and ongoing support from our project coordinator. A four day peer leader training is scheduled for March 29th & 31st and April 5th & 7th from 9am-4pm in Canandaigua.

To learn more about the next Living Healthy class near you, or to inquire about becoming a volunteer peer leader, call: 335-4358 or email: [email protected] or visit noyes- health.org/health-information/living-healthy.

Anemia and aging Aging is accompanied by a number of physical changes.

Some of these changes, such as vision impairment or loss of hearing, are anticipated, while others may arrive unexpectedly.

One condition many adults unexpectedly encounter is anemia. While anemia is common in older adults and its prevalence increases with age, it is not a condition that is widely considered part of the aging process. Anemia is often a symptom of a hidden problem that needs to be addressed promptly.

Anemia is one of the most common blood disorders, affecting more than three million Americans, says the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The American Society of Hematology notes that anemia is characterized by insufficient levels of red blood cells in the blood. Anemia also occurs when red blood cells, which are responsible for carrying oxygen to the various organs and tissues throughout the body, are not functioning properly.

Very often the signs of anemia are overlooked or go unnoticed until a blood test determines low hemoglobin (Hb) or hematocrit (HCT) concentrations. Some people discover they have anemia as they attempt to donate blood, at which time their red blood cell count is found to be inadequate. When the body lacks oxygen, any number of the following symptoms may be experienced:

· weakness

· dizziness

· extreme fatigue

· shortness of breath

· fast or irregular heartbeat

· pale or yellow skin

· cold hands or feet

Frequently, existing disorders or conditions, such as congestive heart failure, are made worse by anemia. But unless doctors specifically consider anemia as a possible cause of symptoms, its presence can go undiagnosed.

The American Academy of Family Physicians says the most common causes of anemia among older men and women include chronic diseases and iron deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency, folate deficiency, gastrointestinal bleeding, and myelodysplastic syndrome are other causes of anemia.

The main way to treat anemia is to discover its source and reverse the outcomes. For instance, a gastrointestinal bleed may need to be repaired. If iron deficiency is the source of the anemia, iron supplements may be prescribed. Many methods to correct anemia involve trial and error and experimentation, especially when the source of the anemia is unknown.

Anemia is a condition that can affect aging adults but does not need to be accepted as a natural consequence of aging. Correct diagnosis and treatment can mitigate symptoms.

Anemia is not usually discovered unless a blood test is ordered. Its symptoms can mimic other conditions.

Did you know ?

Eye examinations are recommended to identify potential vision problems in their infancy stages. M any eye experts advise that the average person should have an eye exam every one to three years, depending on his or her age. The American Optometric Association says children should have their first eye exam at six months of age. Subsequent exams can take place at age 3, and then w hen the child is beginning school. If an eye doctor determines a person has a particular condition that requires monitoring, more frequent eye exams w ill be advised. Children require less frequent eye exams, but as a person gets older, he or she should schedule eye exams every year. Consult w ith an eye doctor if you have questions on w hen to schedule an eye examination or if you are experienc ing vision problems.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Tremors Aren’t Always Sign of Parkinson’s DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with essential tremor. Propranolol 10 mg has not helped. Sometimes I can write and eat with no shaking, but other times the shaking is so bad that the food falls off the fork or I cannot read my printing or writing. If I drink a beer, it seems to relax me enough that in five minutes I can write or eat quite normally nearly every time. I’ve been told that it doesn’t appear to be Parkinson’s. Any suggestions will be enormously appreciated. -- J.N.

ANSWER: Essential tremor, sometimes called benign familial tremor, is common. Often, one has a family history of tremor. It is not Parkinson’s disease; however, it isn’t always “benign” in that, for some people, it can be disabling, preventing a person from not only writing, but, as in your case, activities of daily living such as eating.

Alcohol has long been known to reduce the tremor temporarily, but it must be taken cautiously, since regular use will diminish its effectiveness, requiring higher doses for effectiveness -- and, as I have written many times, excess alcohol is a major cause of many medical problems. Occasional use with meals is reasonable.

Other effective treatments for essential tremor include anti- epilepsy medications such as primidone, gabapentin and topiramate. Unfortunately, all of these can have side effects, so they are best prescribed by an expert, such as a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders.

For serious essential tremor not responsive to medications, deep brain stimulation (via electrodes placed surgically) is effective.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2009, and she is taking Namenda and Aricept to help slow the advancement of the disease. I am writing because she complains of being cold all the time. She and my father keep the temperature in their house at 80 degrees, and my mother wears winter clothes, a coat and a blanket in the house. She sometimes sweats through the clothes, but we can’t persuade her to remove any layers. The house is uncomfortably hot for anyone else, and yet she says she is cold.

Her general practitioner has said that this is part of her disease. Is there anything else you have heard of that could explain this? -- C.L.

ANSWER: I have seen a lot of people with dementia of all kinds, but I haven’t personally seen this degree of intolerance to cold. Her doctor may have more experience than I do, but I didn’t find much about it written in the medical literature. Every person is different, and it’s possible this is just part of how the dementia is affecting her.

However, cold intolerance to this degree suggests some alternate possibilities. The most important and likely is low thyroid levels, which can also cause a condition that looks like dementia and would certainly make dementia worse. I bet her doctor has checked for it. If not done recently, she should have her thyroid level checked.

Other, less-common causes include Addison’s disease (inability to make appropriate amounts of steroid hormones), iron deficiency, anemia from any cause and severe malnutrition.

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. An Immigrant’s Song

I chose this country as my own I didn’t run away. I can go back. I can return. But here I choose to stay.

I’ve heard the question many times, “What brings you to THIS town?” The eyebrows raised, the mouth ajar. They look me up and down.

“But Rochester” I say with glee, “Is where I WANT to be. Ontario. The Finger Lakes. And good old Susan B.

George Eastman here made history. The photographic kind. The Lilac Fest, the Garbage Plate... There’s so much one can find!

The Strong museum of national fame, The gorgeous Genesee. High Falls, Low Falls, and Letchworth Park, And also Frederick D.

I even like the winter When snow and ice abound. When after months of hunkering down, Geese bring the sweetest sound!

With vineyards on the sunny slopes, And corn on all the rest, I just can’t pick the single thing That I really like the best.

So I think I’ll stick around for good - I want to see it all. This Flour City shouts my name, And I gladly heed her call.

Congratulations to our

INSULATED SIDING CAN

KEEP YOUR HEAT W HERE IT

BELONGS -- INSIDE!

If you w ere hit by the “ polar vortex” that brought subzero temperatures to more than half of the continental U.S., it w as a good reminder that the best w ay to stay w arm w as to dress in layers.

The same is true for houses. Today’s homeow ners looking for w ays to improve their home’s energy performance are increasingly choosing insulated siding -- vinyl siding w ith rigid foam insulation that is laminated or permanently attached to the panel. Think of it as adding an extra layer to w ard off the cold.

M ost exter ior w alls have insulation in betw een the w all studs but allow significant energy loss through the studs themselves, w hich are poor insulators. This is called “ thermal br idging.” Insulated siding improves energy effic iency by reduc ing thermal bridging. Like a blanket, it is continuous insulation over the studs, w hich helps homes stay w arm in w inter and cool in summer.

Designed to reach higher levels of r igidity, stability and thermal resistance -- “ R-value” -- insulated siding is subjec t to an array of regulations, standards and third-party quality assurance tests that determine how it is manufactured and marketed. Due to that rigor, a number of building and energy-effic iency programs have recognized that insulated siding qualifies as home insulation. In addition, it has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protec tion Agency as a building produc t that can help qualify homes under the Energy Star Qualified Homes Program.

My wife and I would

like to thank all of the

people in the Bristol,

Bloomfield and

Honeoye area in

finding our dog Mattie.

She is now back home

with us. Many of you

went out on your own

time and looked for

her. We were humbled

by the support and

good wishes people

had for Mattie. She now

wears a GPS device and

is more closely watched

as she should be.

I am a retired ambulance corps volunteer and take issue with the concern about ambulance staff using the ambulance to make food runs. If I used my own personal vehicle to make a food run that could add an additional 10 minutes to a response. If you were having a heart attack, would you want the ambulance there in 6-10 minutes or possibly 20 minutes? When we are picking up food, we are on duty, ready to run out the door if a call comes in. Further, by being out in the community we remind residents that our service is available for their emergency. Exposure i.e. community events, not just in an emergency, has a very positive impact on residents. Next time you see an ambulance crew getting lunch, thank them for their service and tell them to enjoy their meal.

Reading the vent regarding the ambulance being used to pick up food made me angry. First let me point out that that at one time or another ambulance, fire and police use their work vehicles to pick up food when they are on their shift as I have been in restaurants when they have walked in to pick up their order to go. At times they are on 10, 12 or overnight shifts and as long as they stay in the area they are paid to cover I see no problem with them picking up a meal and as a volunteer they give their personal time to serve their community and to suggest that they use their own vehicles to pick up food means you run the risk of our emergency services being without enough people to cover a call which could put people’s lives at risk! Now ask yourself is it worth it?! I think Not!

Typical of today’s society... judge without knowing what you are talking about. I am not on the ambulance but I work closely with them. They do NOT load up and take ambulance to get lunch; they are coming back from taking a call. And remember they are VOLUNTEERING their time and you are begrudging them from stopping to grab food?! I have to wonder... what do you give back???

We would like to

express our most

sincere Gratitude and

Thanks to the Medical

Make Your Small Business Marketing Plan “Sizzle”

(Family Features) For small businesses and restaurants, savvy marketing can

make a major difference in overall performance, especially w hen it comes to

promoting products and services to loyal and prospective customers.

Using direct mail is a great w ay to share new s about your business to your

neighbors. Business ow ners need to remember “ tried and true” management

and marketing tactics. But don’t solely rely on e-mail/soc ial media to reach

customers. The average household receives only tw o pieces of direct mail a

day compared w ith 157 emails. A service like Direct M ail is an easy-to-use

and cost-effec tive solution that helps get messages into the hands of

customers. The customer is alw ays right . And now they are more pow erful

than ever w ith real time review s. According to a recent study having an extra

star on a review site can cause the revenue of a business to rise by five to 10

percent, so there is a direc t connection betw een ratings and a business’

bottom line. Employ big data & social marketing. Online platforms such as

Facebook, OpenTable, Instagram and Fishbow l help ow ners gain rapid

exposure, w hile big data drives loyalty, customer satisfaction and profitability.
