Shanty towns.

• Shanty towns are places that are densely populated. Which are not organized and full of run down housings.

• Millions of people have been forced to construct their own homes from scrap materials such as wood, corrugated iron and metals.

• Often families have to share one tap, there is no sewerage provision, disease is common and many people are unemployed.

• Natural Increase is one reason for its growth (this is when the birth rate is higher than the death rate). The population has also grown as the result of urbanisation. The has been caused by rural to urban migration.

How Shanty towns hinder development.

• No education leads to having of no jobs.• Not being able to contribute to the country.• Dependent on primary industries (e.g. Farming)• Low income not enough to develop the country.

• High rate of prostitution.• Leading to increase in number of people having AIDS.

• Lack of infrastructure, mainly caused by the government not planning for the poor.

• Slums often face disasters like landslides, earthquakes and tropical storm.

• Water and sanitation difficulties.

• Social, cultural and economic disadvantages.

• Not being able to demand for their rights

• No support networks for them to rely on and nobody to turn to for advice.

What can be done to improve the condition.

1. Build schools for the young.

2. Reallocate the buildings.

3. Better access to clean water and sanitations – drains and latrines.

4. Decrease the number of crime rates and prostitution.

5. Rights and demands being fulfilled.

6. Improve in the physical environment with new footpaths and roads.

• Often in third world countries.

• Many shanty town settlements are built on the banks of rivers and as a result the residents suffer the effect of floods or from industrial toxins in the water. Some are built close to rubbish dumps
