HVUT TAX FORM 2290 - DUE DATES FOR ANNUAL AND PARTIAL TAX PERIODS
The IRS tax form 2290 is
intended for heavy
highway vehicle use. If you
are a trucker or an owner of
a vehicle over 55,000
pounds, it is imperative that
you file and that you file on
time.
WHEN IS THE ANNUAL FILING DUE?Annually, truckers and owners of heavy highway
vehicles need to file by August 31st. For those who
put heavy highway vehicles on the road by July
2013, you need to file by September 3, 2013 if they
put vehicles on the road beginning July 2013.
While the typical filing date for IRS form 2290 is
August 31st , it’s on a Saturday in 2013 and the
following Monday, September 2nd, is Labor Day on
which offices are closed for the holiday. It is
recommended that you eFile as it is fast and
electronic, even if you need to sign up for and sign
with a pin number. Efiling is required for truckers or
owners who are filing for 25 or more vehicles.

WHAT IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE THE VEHICLE
FOR THE FULL YEAR?If you didn’t have the vehicle for
a full year, your payment is less.
To know what to
pay, exactly, your payment is
determined by which month you
purchased or began operating
the vehicle. If you operated in
July or have been operating it
annually, your due date for 2013
is September 3rd. From this
point, every month you start
operating the vehicle, you must
file the IRS form 2290 by the end
of the next month.
For example, if you start operating the vehicle in
October of 2013, you should file by the end of
November 2013. What with the Thanksgiving
holiday, the due date, then, would be December
2nd. For a full list of months and due dates, you can
consult the instructions page of the 2290 page.
WHAT IF YOU ARE FILING FOR 25 OR MORE
VEHICLES?
If you have 25 or more heavy highway vehicles, the IRS encourages you to
eFile. By eFiling, you’re cutting back on the amount of paperwork that you
would otherwise be printing and filing. If you’re eFiling, you should be
paying with electronic funds withdrawal, which is a direct debit.
SHOULD YOU PAY WHEN YOU FILE?
The IRS expects you to pay when you file. If you are eFiling, you pay with an
electronic funds withdrawal. If you are filing by paper, you send a check or
money order using Form 2290-V sent to Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box
804525, Cincinnati, OH 45280-4525.
The IRS form 2290 is not something to take lightly, especially if you are
putting 25 or more vehicles on the road. If you’ve recently acquired a
vehicle or if you have only recently employed it for your service, you are
not required to pay until the end of the following month from when you
employed it. If you’ve been running your vehicles for a full year or have
started in July of 2013, you don’t need to file until September 3rd, 2013.
