• Scared and worried, his men murdered La Salle

• He built a positive and trusting relationships with the Indians

• De Tonti awaited La Salle’s return to America

• Waited in St. Louis for 2 years

• Worried that he would not return, De Tonti went looking for him

• De Tonti established this fort in 1686• Poste aux Arkansas

• Very few people lived here

• Many traders and travelers would temporally stay here
