-Soil, nutrients, watering amounts, light, heat, infestation level
Dependent vs. Independent Variables
Scientist use an experiment to search for cause and effect relationships in nature. In other words, they design an experiment so that changes to one item cause something else to change in a predictable way.
These changing qualities are called variables. A variable is any factor, trait or condition that can exist in differing amounts or types. An experiment usually has three kinds of variables: independent, dependent and controlled.
The scientist focuses their observations on the dependent variables to see how it responds to the change made to the independent variable. The change of the dependent variable is caused by and depends on the value of the independent variable.
Dependent vs. Independent Variables
Experiments also have controlled variables. Controlled variables are factors that a scientist want to remain constant (the same), and they must observe them as carefully as the dependent variables. Controlled variable are used to compare the dependent variable’s changes in experiment’s relationship and keep the tests fair.
Underline the independent variable and
circle the dependent variable in each.
Dependent vs. Independent Variables
1.The price of gas determines
how much I will purchase.
2. If I do not want to gain weight, the amount of exercise I need to do is a result of how much I eat.
HypothesisBased on what you know about the
experiment…..
In your Cornell Notes:If we test four different types of corn under similar conditions and change only the infestation level, then we should be able to determine and give evidence for which corn type will provide the highest yield.

• There are 8 different data collection tests.• Continue until all Data is Collected.
TODAY’S TASK LIST1) Work with a partner from your
table OR working individually.2) Pick up your Assigned Computer.3)You will be held responsible for its
well-being.4) Ask Clarifying Questions as needed.5)Begin experiments & collecting data6) Our Goal is complete 8 tests by the
end of Friday’s class.
HOMEWORK1)We will be working in class on the Virtual Lab tomorrow as well.
2)You will have homework over the weekend if you do not finish collecting data on 8 experiments.
3)This lab is not due until Tuesday of next week.
