IACCA THEME & AIM

THEME • Conservation Agriculture: Building

entrepreneurship and resilient farming systems

AIM • Share and Expose experiences and lessons and

facilitate alliances to unblock hindrances to expanded and scaled-up adoption of CA especially among the smallholder farming systems and related industry in Africa.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

1. Facilitate sharing of information and experiences focusing on lessons with regard to:

i. Impacts of CA contributing to the attainment of the MDGs

ii. Sustaining practicing of CA, especially in smallholder farming systems

iii. Key issues in the development and adoption of CA in both commercial and subsistence farming systems

iv. Links and roles of CA to other global initiatives related to sustainable NRM and rural development

2. Show case policy interventions that have supported and facilitated adoption of CA including enhancing capacity among players and stakeholders

3. Examine and learn from initiatives, including business/entrepreneurship models, unblocking and accelerating adoption and practicing of CA

IACCA SUB-THEMES 1. Growing more with less 2. Weather proofing agriculture 3. CA for sustained wealth creation – unlocking barriers to

entrepreneurship along the value chains 4. Food sovereignty – integrated CA based systems and

family farms 5. Effective research and targeting strategies for enhanced

CA adoption 6. Harnessing the power of collaboration – networking,

partnerships and communities of practice 7. Increasing CA adoption: role of innovative technology,

approaches, infrastructure support and policies in Africa

CONGRESS PROCESS

1. Farmers at the Front and at the Centre: Farmers’ forum outputs to dictate what ALL OTHER SESSIONS must not fail to address

2. Attractive and worth-the-while to unconventional but strategic players and interest groups. Media; Private sector;

3. Be interactive, allowing active participation and discussions through 7 Thematic working groups, 5 Panel discussions; Open space posters, Exhibition booths, Videos, Training materials, 6 Field visit sites.

THE PARTICIPANTS

• 380 registered participants by 16 March

• About 60 farmers

• 50 Oral and 12 poster papers by researchers

• 4 Exhibition booths by CA private sectors; other 16 by NGOs

• National Governments

• Development partners

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

1. Information and lessons highlighting issues that (a) enhance, (b) hinder effective CA dissemination and adoption

2. Increased awareness and interest in CA even among those not directly interested and working in agriculture

3. A Lusaka CA Declaration highlighting principle issues and areas of concern in widespread adoption of CA in Africa

4. Sow the seeds for stakeholders’ Communities of Practice for sustainable NRM linked to higher productivity

5. Access to information for future formal and informal contacts and partnerships in promotions of CA.

6. Establishment of a permanent continental CA knowledge hub – facilitating networking and information sharing on CA.
