In recent years, instant replay has forever changed the rules of sports across the world. In the United States, Major League Baseball has been one of the most reluctant professional sports leagues to accept instant replay. Until last year, officials could only use instant replay to review the validity of a home run call. In 2013, team owners approved a significant expansion of instant replay rules for the 2014 season.
According to the new rule changes, managers can challenge one call per game. If the first challenge overturns a call, a manager can make a second challenge. Under the new rule system, managers can challenge calls such as ground-rule doubles, tag plays on base paths, force plays at all bases, and fan interference. Most notably, managers cannot challenge judgment calls, such as balls and strikes, checked swings, and the infield fly rule.
The first instant replay challenge occurred on March 31, 2014, when Chicago Cubs manager Rick Renteria challenged a double-play call.
